We were talking about harddrives at work when someone was wondering if filling them with helium would make them spin faster... Then imagination took over!
"But helium balloons float, right... So would helium filled hard drives float..? Probably not due to weight but imagine dropping a hard drive and seeing it float towards the ceiling.."
"John, the delivery guy has a box with new harddrives downstairs, could you go get them?
*shouts* John did you get them? Just don't open the box outside!! No, no, NOOO DON'T OPEN IT OUTSIDE! JOHN, THE HARDDRIVES, BE CAREFUL, DON'T OPEN THE BOX OUTSI.....
*harddrives floating by the window into the air*
NOO, JOHN, WHAT DID YOU DO?!
"*walks into the office, harddrives floating against the ceiling* goddammit John, not again"
"John, why are you putting one kilometer long cables on those harddrives?
*John let's them float into the air towards the clouds*
We offer cloud storage!"
(We have a usual office building ceiling)
"John, I need a 1tb harddrive, where are those?
Uhm... C12!
*takes a ladder and walks towards c12 to pluck one from the ceiling*"

I think I've shown in my past rants and comments that I'm pretty experienced. Looking back though, I was really fucking stupid. Since I haven't posted a rant yet on the weekly topics, I figure I would share this humbling little gem.
Way back in the ancient era known as 2009, I was working my first desk job as a "web designer". Apparently the owner of this company didn't know the difference between "designer", which I'm not, and "developer", which I am, nor the responsibilities of each role.
It was a shitty job paying $12/hour. It was such a nightmare to work at. I guess the silver lining is that this company now no longer exists as it was because of my mistake, but it was definitely a learning experience I hold in high regard even today. Okay, enough filler...
I was told to wipe the Dev server in order to start fresh and set up an entirely new distro of Linux. I was to swap out the drives with whatever was available from the non-production machines, set up the RAID 5 array and route it through the router and firewall, as we needed to bring this Dev server online to allow clients to monitor the work. I had no idea what any of this meant, but I was expected to learn it that day because the next day I would be commencing with the task.
Astonishingly, I managed to set up the server and everything worked great! I got a pat on the back and the boss offered me a 4 day weekend with pay to get some R&R. I decided to take the time to go camping. I let him know I would be out of town and possibly unreachable because of cell service, to which he said no problem.
Tuesday afternoon I walked into work and noticed two of the field techs messing with the Dev server I built. One was holding a drive while the other was holding a clipboard. I was immediately called into the boss's office.
He told me the drives on the production server failed during the weekend, resulting in the loss of the data. He then asked me where I got the drives from for the Dev server upgrade. I told him that they came from one of the inactive systems on the shelf. What he told me next through the deafening screams rendered me speechless.
I had gutted the drives from our backup server that was just set up the week prior. Every Friday at midnight, it would turn on through a remote power switch on a schedule, then the system would boot and proceed to copy over the production server's files into an archive for that night and shutdown when it completed. Well, that last Friday night/Saturday morning, the machine kicked on, but guess what didn't happen? The files weren't copied. Not only were they not copied, but the existing files that got backed up previously we're gone. Why? Because I wiped those drives when I put them into the Dev server.
I would up quitting because the conversation was very hostile and I couldn't deal with it. The next week, I was served with a suit for damages to this company. Long story short, the employer was found in the wrong from emails I saved of him giving me the task and not once stating that machine was excluded in the inactive machines I could salvage drives from. The company sued me because they were being sued by a client, whose entire company presence was hosted by us and we lost the data. In total just shy of 1TB of data was lost, all because of my mistake. The company filed for bankruptcy as a result of the lawsuit against them and someone bought the company name and location, putting my boss and its employees out of a job.
If there's one lesson I have learned that I take with the utmost respect to even this day, it's this: Know your infrastructure front to back before you change it, especially when it comes to data.8 -
Conversation with Microsoft support I had after 1 hour:
“You’ll need to wait for 15 minutes”
“By the way did you know you have 5GB free OneDrive storage with a Microsoft account?”
“I’m a customer of a 1TB onedrive plan”
“Well if you’re interested in using it, you’ve got 5GB for free” 🤦♂️😔16 -
My 1.5 year old 1tb SSD just died unexpectedly. (Samsung EVO 850). It might be under warranty yet.
Fortunately the only data I lost was my debian install, some steam games, bookmarks, and a few unfinshed projects.
I kept everything important on a backup spinning drive -- which is also dying. Joy. But I might be able to save its data.30 -
One of my friend at college asked me why her computer is running slow even when she is running only chrome.
Me: how much memory does it have?
Her: 1TB.
Me (somewhat confused): no no I meant RAM.
Her: yeah yeah it's one TB. I read the specifications of the laptop.
Me: *in my mind, fucking read it again* please read it again. You must have misread it.
Her( grinning face ): alright.
Guess who didn't talk to me for a week. 😂14 -
I have this little hobby project going on for a while now, and I thought it's worth sharing. Now at first blush this might seem like just another screenshot with neofetch.. but this thing has quite the story to tell. This laptop is no less than 17 years old.
So, a Compaq nx7010, a business laptop from 2004. It has had plenty of software and hardware mods alike. Let's start with the software.
It's running run-off-the-mill Debian 9, with a custom kernel. The reason why it's running that version of Debian is because of bugs in the network driver (ipw2200) in Debian 10, causing it to disconnect after a day or so. Less of an issue in Debian 9, and seemingly fixed by upgrading the kernel to a custom one. And the kernel is actually one of the things where you can save heaps of space when you do it yourself. The kernel package itself is 8.4MB for this one. The headers are 7.4MB. The stock kernels on the other hand (4.19 at downstream revisions 9, 10 and 13) took up a whole GB of space combined. That is how much I've been able to remove, even from headless systems. The stock kernels are incredibly bloated for what they are.
Other than that, most of the data storage is done through NFS over WiFi, which is actually faster than what is inside this laptop (a CF card which I will get to later).
Now let's talk hardware. And at age 17, you can imagine that it has seen quite a bit of maintenance there. The easiest mod is probably the flash mod. These old laptops use IDE for storage rather than SATA. Now the nice thing about IDE is that it actually lives on to this very day, in CF cards. The pinout is exactly the same. So you can use passive IDE-CF adapters and plug in a CF card. Easy!
The next thing I want to talk about is the battery. And um.. why that one is a bad idea to mod. Finding replacements for such old hardware.. good luck with that. So your other option is something called recelling, where you disassemble the battery and, well, replace the cells. The problem is that those battery packs are built like tanks and the disassembly will likely result in a broken battery housing (which you'll still need). Also the controllers inside those battery packs are either too smart or too stupid to play nicely with new cells. On that laptop at least, the new cells still had a perceived capacity of the old ones, while obviously the voltage on the cells themselves didn't change at all. The laptop thought the batteries were done for, despite still being chock full of juice. Then I tried to recalibrate them in the BIOS and fried the battery controller. Do not try to recell the battery, unless you have a spare already. The controllers and battery housings are complete and utter dogshit.
Next up is the display backlight. Originally this laptop used to use a CCFL backlight, which is a tiny tube that is driven at around 2000 volts. To its controller go either 7, 6, 4 or 3 wires, which are all related and I will get to. Signs of it dying are redshift, and eventually it going out until you close the lid and open it up again. The reason for it is that the voltage required to keep that CCFL "excited" rises over time, beyond what the controller can do.
So, 7-pin configuration is 2x VCC (12V), 2x enable (on or off), 1x adjust (analog brightness), and 2x ground. 6-pin gets rid of 1 enable line. Those are the configurations you'll find in CCFL. Then came LED lighting which required much less power to run. So the 4-pin configuration gets rid of a VCC and a ground line. And finally you have the 3-pin configuration which gets rid of the adjust line, and you can just short it to the enable line.
There are some other mods but I'm running out of characters. Why am I telling you all this? The reason is that this laptop doesn't feel any different to use than the ThinkPad x220 and IdeaPad Y700 I have on my desk (with 6c12t, 32G of RAM, ~1TB of SSDs and 2TB HDDs). A hefty setup compared to a very dated one, yet they feel the same. It can do web browsing, I can chat on Telegram with it, and I can do programming on it. So, if you're looking for a hobby project, maybe some kind of restrictions on your hardware to spark that creativity that makes code better, I can highly recommend it. I think I'm almost done with this project, and it was heaps of fun :D12 -
My reaction when my friend misses

Trying to compress 1Tb of data,
Will take 40 hours... I expected worse. Good boy Winrar, I will buy you this year promise..8 -
so here's a little story:
yesterday i decided to buy a shiny new gtx 1070 since my pc is getting very old, i come back from the store and i realize that my case is slightly too small to fit the card.
'No bg deal' i think to myself, i run out to buy a saw and after some work i made some space to fit the card in by sawing off some hard drive bays i was not using. I plug in the card, i wire up the pc, and it does not boot: after some asking around (i have never really built a pc before), i relaize i need more power to the card and wire a second PCIE connector. low and behold, i power of the pc and it works! Once logged into windows tho, i realize none of my HHDs are detected...
To cut a long story short, i **did not think to unplug the hard drives before i started sawing off bits of the case and the vibrations killed both of them!** i lost ~1TB of data in the process: a lot of it was games and programs, but i have yet to tally up the damage.
I am completely bamboozled by what the fuck just happened, i think i'll go hand myself in to the nearest police station for crimes against technology... or maybe a mental clinic would be best?...
PS: my system drive was spared since its an SSD, but i may as well re-install windows at this point since i lost 90% of my software11 -
Completely rebuilt my pc and get to sell my old one to my boss so that I can get paid to work on it 😂😂😂

So 10 months ago i moved from Cambridge (UK) to Guildford (UK), due to moving this distance i started working from home and going into the office once a week.
Now after 10 months i have finally got my home office how i first imagined it. Everything runs from my laptop which is located on the shelving unit away from my desk. Everything plugs into it via 1 USB lead.
Setup:
27" 2560 x 1440 monitor flanked by two 1280 x 1024 monitors.
Asus Laptop (i5-6300HQ, 12GB ram, 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD)

customer informed us that the app will get quite some load since the beginning of July
# this monday
last spare hdd on database's SAN died.
I told everyone another hdd is to follow it very soon eithet whether nothing is done at all or if anyone attempts to touch the san array [cuz that's what redundant raids do...]. No fucks given by anyone, no attempts to have maintenance and planned outage within 24 hrs....
# this morning
another hdd has failed and now 1tb of data is lost. No way to restore backups cuz there is no database to restore them to....
# 20 minutes later I head out to get some popcorn. It's gonna be a fun week!
So... The planned heavy load [and revenue along with it] is not gonna happen... I guess they are gonna ha a week long outage.
That's what happens when you ignore warning shots fired at your face.2 -
Recently, Comcast limited my bandwidth to 1TB. I'd be upset, but my service is so slow I don't think I could use it all in just a month!6
-
Fucking cloud providers always trying to steal your shit and spy on your things, fucking prying eyes. That's why i've decided to go back hosting my own private cloud from home. Running on some very energy efficient shit: dual core intel atom cpu (so slow that it can't fucking run windows normally), 16gb of ram, because why the fuck not? and 1tb 2.5"hdd, along with unlimited data - 100/100 Mbit/s internet connection with a server response time less than 95ms just to backup my shitty Iphone selfies and cat pics, host some very important files and regularly back up my contacts. This shit runs CentOS, Nginx, https, bitch! This platform is more trustworthy than your shitty dropbox or whatever other shit they offer you. I can choose whether i back-up my shit from local network or over internetz, Costing me no more than 25€ annually(just to keep the machine on 24/7/365).14

I'm 4 days into my new job, and so far I am absolutely loving it. Here's my setup. Yes, they gave me 3 monitors plus a laptop, so my setup has 5 screens! Now I can die happy :D
Definitely worth noting as well, since it caught me by surprise - the company-supplied laptop is a powerhouse. High-end i7 CPU, mid-to-high-end NVIDIA GPU, tons of ports, 1TB HD, 4K display, and 48 GB RAM. Yes, 48 GB. I am truly blessed, starting off my career with this. ^_^rant excessive ram my dream finally came true hello innumerable open tabs multi-monitor setup goodbye lag11 -
I wrote in a rant here that I couldn't access my 1TB external hard-drive anymore because I refused to "Safely remove" it from my computer.
My brother sent me today an image with it, showing me that he managed to open it.
I can't tell you how happy I am!
The solution: if you encounter the same problem (it takes forever for windows to scan it and you can't open it/ on linux it tells you to go to windows and and properly eject it), just go to `Device Manager` and `Scan for new hardware`. This should find it & solve it3 -
Modern tragedy in four lines:
- I just bought a new 1TB SSD
- Look at all this free space
- Let's do npm install
- Oh no6 -
My workstation; My main development PC sports an i7-4790, GTX 970, a 128 GB SSD, and two 1TB HDD's. I run Windows 10 and I have Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Other than that nothing special!4
-
So I had to buy a laptop
I had a Lenovo G50-70 (2014) it was really good, mid-range i5, 6GB of RAM and to speed it up I've installed an SSD. 3 years (and some formatting) later it started being slow, I couldn't even play Minecraft anymore (and the battery was dying)
This year we're learning and using PCs for the first (real) time, so I needed a good laptop.
I started searching everywhere, Google, shops, Amazon... (Excluding HP and Acers for good reasons 😂) so I've found this Asus, which isn't really famous, but the model is UX510UX.
FHD display, Nvidia 950M, i7-7500U, really good battery, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard disk
I bought an additional 128GB M.2 SSD from WD (I'm sorry but I can't live with a HDD 😂)
All of this for ~700€
I'm very happy for the purchase, the laptop is all metal (pinky bronze, but I like it)
It's really powerful, I can play GTA with mid-high details without any lag. (Remember, I play GTA on the desktop with a 1080 Ti so my standards are high)
I'm happy 😄!22 -
I know it is 1 week too late but i dont care. Im aware that my workbench looks like shit but in reality it is a "creative mess"
@Condor Do you envy me now? I have 1054z that is hacked and has all its features unlocked! I have desoldering station and crappy (very crappy) soldering station. In addition to that i got simple sine/square generator that goes to 1Mhz (old communist poland tech - indestructible and great)
Situation with my pc is complicated. My main pc (with the curved monitor)
-i5 3350p
-12 Gb or ram (2*4Gb and another 4 that friend gave me)
-radeon 7800hd (*RIP* cant play games anymore 😥)
-256Gb sata SSD
-2Tb WD blue HDD
In addition to that i have a laptop
i5 4 cores, 8Gb ram, 1Tb HDD, GTX1050
I use my lap for gaming now, i even connected that monitor as main lap.
(double monitors yay!) sometimes i use my old pc for minor things but i use rdp for that, it is great experience! (my lap displaying rdp from my old pc on second monitor that was my old pcs main one 😂 i find it a tiny bit funny)15 -
TIL: There are phones with 512GB and even 1TB internal storage... WHO THE FUCK NEEDS THAT MUCH STORAGE IN THEIR PHONE?!! Your phone becomes an external 1TB SSD with a touchscreen at that point...19
-
4x4ghz CPU, 16gb of RAM, 100mbps downstream and 1tb ssd... and it took windows only 2 hours and 4 restarts to install an update...WTF11

I've never used Windows in my day-to-day life. No kidding.
When I got my father's first computer, I used an old distribution called BBC Linux. I didn't have any computer knowledge, it was my first contact with a computer, so I went to a friend's house and asked for a CD to install on my computer. I don't know if this friend ended up making a "gotcha" and thought I'd give up, but I just read the manuals and fell in love. That was year 2000.
Then I used Conectiva Linux, then I went to Red Hat 9, then Slackware, then in 2007 I started using Solaris. And I stayed on Solaris (Solaris 10, Solaris Nevada and OpenSolaris) until 2011.
In 2011 I bought a Mac. I stayed at Apple until 2020, when I couldn't stand Apple forcing me to buy new computers (I still don't understand how a 2011 iMac, i5 (4 Hyper Thread cores) with 16GB of RAM, 1TB SSD only runs up to High Sierra).
Then I bought a Dell. It came with Windows 10, the first thing I did was install WSL2. I could not stand it, the system is bad, sorry. I installed OpenSuse and have been using it for two years.
It's just that every day someone tells me "how can you use this"? "There is no alternative to Windows, do you want to be different?"
I know that my story was the reverse of the "mainstream", so I'm going to talk about my vision of Windows, that in my brain it is actually the "alternative".
- Having a file explorer without "tabs" in 2022 is unthinkable for me.
- I love terminal. And the Windows terminal is very limited. "ps ... | awk ... | xargs ..." is a must for me. "find ./ -name '...' -exec ..."... these things on Windows are totally "different" and have the "powershell way" while all other operating systems keep the same form. And cygwin is not an option. As Wine for serious work is also not.
- Dragging a file into the terminal, and having it write its path, is so natural, that when Windows didn't do it, I was dismayed.
- I've always used StarOffice, OpenOffice and now LibreOffice. All the people in my story received my documents and reports as a PDF and no one complained. Until a coworker saw me editing in LibreOffice and said "oh I want it in word format". As long as he didn't know, everything was fine, right?
- Windows is paid. And is there advertising? I don't understand. And I refuse. If you want to display advertising, then excuse me. I have no problem paying, I'm not an opensource shiite. It's just that paying and not working bothers me much more than an opensource that I can fix or expect a fix knowing the good will of the people involved.
- Hyper-V is a joke. QEMU/KVM is better, and Bhyve on FreeBSD which is a very young project, is already a million times better than Hyper-V.
- Developing in C/C++ for Windows is only possible in two ways: Either you've always lived in Windows and your brain is conditioned, or you compile with MSYS2 (CLang or GCC).
- There is no significant evolution of the windows desktop since 95.
- Multiple workspace support with multiple monitors, not ready. It's another joke.
- REGEDIT does not need any comment.
- The system loses performance over time. I still don't know how Windows achieves this.
- I've seen people complain about desktop fragmentation on Unix and Linux. Many DEs end up leaving applications with different themes (like running a Qt application in Gnome and GTK in KDE), but to be quite honest, the lack of Windows standard bothered me much more. Even Microsoft's own software is completely different: Control Panel, Calculator, Paint and Office, To-Do, and Settings, have horrible style differences and look-and-feel fragmentation.
- Dark mode has not been implemented. It's another joke. Many applications are white while everything else is dark. Sorry, even on Linux which is a mess, this has been resolved. And well resolved.
- NTFS? Serious?
- C:, D:.. It doesn't convince me since DOS.
- Bloatware.
- News "biased" in the search bar is a lack of respect for those who use the computer to work.
And that. For me, Windows is the alternative operating system. I can't take Windows seriously, for me it's an experimental one like Haiku or ReactOS. It's good to play.
About market share, it doesn't convince me to use it. But convinces me to sell. I've always developed applications to run on Windows. And when I need it, I turn on a VM to compile the project. But in everyday life? Impractical.15 -
love my new baby <3

this puppy is gonna serve me well8 -
I just noticed that my desktop still has a DVD-RW in it that I never used.. which led me to think, I've got here like 5 DVD-RW's as well as 5 CD-RW's, but I never use them. Are there still any uses for them? Long-term backup storage for example? I've heard somewhere that data rot can happen over the course of a few years.. but would it really be a problem? I mean I've had these for over a year already and they look healthy to me. That said, they've never been used and just sat on the top of my desk in their enclosures all the time.
FWIW, I'm having 10TB of storage (as well as some other smaller stuff here and there.. maybe 500GB or so) in various hosts and 3 mirrors, so the need for backups is already fulfilled.. it's merely a curiosity of mine as in "ah, I still have these things huh".. so yeah.
I think that I've bought these DVD's for something like €6 for 5 pieces in a local store that doesn't specialize in this sort of thing, so I'm fairly certain that I could get them for cheaper elsewhere.. think the likes of AliExpress etc. Would they be a viable technology to maybe still invest in over hard drives for long-term storage purposes, considering that the cost of a hard drive these days is only €50 for 1TB? But I guess that tapes would be better for this purpose, no?9 -
Let's play "Count the operating systems in my household"! I'll start:
- Windows 10 Pro on 1tb drive in desktop
- Windows 10 Enterprise VM on desktop
- Ubuntu 18 VM on desktop
- Ubuntu WSL on desktop
- Ubuntu 18 on seconds drive in desktop
- Manjaro on Cheap laptop
- Manjaro on old, expensive laptop
- Windows 10 Pro on new expensive laptop
- Windows 10 Enterprise VM on new expensive laptop
Just realized I have no dual booters :o17 -
My grandpa is using his computer for video editing and creating photo books. His setup was:
- A 100GB SSD for C
- A 1TB HD for D
The problem:
He never had more than 6GB free on his C Drive because somehow Windows and his programs filled it all with some utter bullshit which couldn't be removed or whatever.
So I promised him to install Linux for his Emails and Surfing and create a Windows 10 VM for him to use his programs.
The Linux installation from downloading a iso over creating a bootable drive to actually installing it was faster than finding the fucking Windows 10 Iso.
Which was about the same time as installing fucking windows because this bullshit prints out one fucking line at a time and then waits for you to read it for 15 motherfucking seconds before printing the next line.
And don't get me started on the fucking telemetry.17 -

So glad my laptop is upgradable. A month ago I had 12GB RAM and no SSD, now I have 16GB RAM and a 250GB SSD plus the 1TB HDD that I already had, an i7-4700mq, and a GeForce GT 740M.
Unfortunately the graphics card isn’t working great yet, but my system is on its way!2 -
I got my new Oryx Pro today, from System76. It came with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I opted not to get Pop!_OS or Ubuntu 18.10, as I would prefer to leave the OS on it for the longterm.
Even at 15.6", it's a BIG laptop. It measures 18" from corner to corner, when it's closed. It comfortably fits in my backpack, which is a bit on the small side, but it's probably about 30-50% heavier than a MacBook Pro.
But that size and weight are vindicated by the most thuggish hardware I have ever seen in a laptop. As configured, this machine has a 4.1GHz 8th gen i7, 32GB of DDR4 at 2666MHz, an 8GB GTX 1070, a 250GB nvme system disk, and a 1TB SSD for data.
The display is set by default to 4K resolution, but I cranked that down to FHD for the sake of my eyes and the battery. I will try some games at higher resolution at some point, but for desktop navigation, I get more use out of multiple virtual desktops than in massive resolution.
I will comment tomorrow or the day after with the steps I've taken to bend this beast to my will, and it's also important to say that I have not finished yet. This is just a summary, but I should have been in bed an hour ago, so I'm gonna go do that.9 -
This was a while back. I was hosting a site at a hosting company's 'vps'. I had 1gig for the mysql databases. Problem is, for some reason the server didnt let me have more than 300mbs including everything (there were some videos on the site). I contacted them and they only replied that its ok on their end. Okay, makes sense. So i opened ssh and started looking for the problem. After a bit, i figured out that my site is hosted on a 1tb drive and i could see all the other partitions. Meaning they just slapped a bunch of users data on the same drive. So i wrote an assembly program to offset the mysql files by ~500 mbs. Turns out that put me in an unoccupied 100gb partition and the site was still working properly. So i offset everything to there and i had a 100gb vps for like $5.2

For fucks sake Microsoft, I don't want to install Visual Studio on my 120GB C:\ drive. I want to install it on my 1TB HDD...
Seriously, why can't we just change the install directory?6 -
Microsoft.. MicrobrainedSoftware-devs.
SamsungCloud died out and was replaced with OneDrive automatically. Alright, my data is still backed up, so.. No biggie.
OneDrive was syncing my pics and videos automatically, even though media sync is disabled. Umm.. Okay?
My phone is constantly very low on free space [idk why], so I decided to clean up some old photos. I'm removing and removing, until I reach photos with a cloud and an arrow replacing their content. Hundreds of spoiled pics that do not open. And in info their path is /OneDrive/*. Umm.. Wat?
Open mydrive website, log in only to be greeted by a fully loaded onedrive webapp covered by a non-removable modal 'we have an app for this. Use app'. Wtf?? Just let me disable the modal and use the webapp!! Wtf!
Open onedrive app. I'm greeted with a red warning that I've exceeded my storage limits and my account is frozen and my files will be deleted in June '23. WTF????? A heads-up would be nice!!
The popup lists my options:
1. Unfreeze the account for 30days, but I can only do that once. If after 30d I'm still exceeding my limits, my acc will be again frozen w/o an easy way to unfreeze.
2. Once unfrozen [takes ~24hrs], I can either
2.1 pay 7€ to M$ monthly for 1TB of storage in onedrive
2.2 remove my files from OD and my phone [since even if media sync is disabled, OD app is still syncing my media]
what the actual fuck?!?!? M$ is now keeping hundreds of my photos on my phone hostage.
Go F* yourself!11 -
Ok i post it a bit late but what the hell.
This is my monster now! I now shall conquer the world!

Ok i already had that configuration for a while... but it was sloooowwwww D:
That is why for my birthday/chrismas i bought myself additional 8GB of ram and a tiny nvme ssd to make everything 1000x faster! 😎

I am great at getting raspberry pi projects about 97% done...
But absolute shit at that last 3%.
Working on a home built WiFi repeater and deauther (front) and a 1TB SSD nextcloudpi server (back). Definitely outside my comfort zone, especially the first one. Despite having mad time on terminal, and SSH every day, I am very soft on this networking shit.
wpa_supplicant, though I do not now, I will come to understand your mysteries. -
Bought a new 4TB disk for my gaming rig, pulled out the old 1TB one and plugged it back on my old machine. Installed Ubuntu Server. Instalation went well after I figured I needed the IOMMU turned on.
Later went to play some BfA on the gaming rig and... No boot disk recognized. Ahn?
My SSD is plugged in. SATA cable is well seated. Thing was working not 30min before...
After a loooong time trying to figure out if it was hardware or micro$hit's Windows 10, I finally figured it:
It seems Windows installed its EFI partition on the old HDD. So my SSD is basically a single, large NTFS volume. Now I need to download the Win10 ISO, boot up the install disk and use the cmd prompt to create a new EFI partition on my SSD. Ugh.
Fucking Windows didn't think to install its boot manager on its own disk. "Nah, just gonna use this random magnetic disk here". Why? My login queues are already huge on WoW, why must this wankstain of an OS annoy me even more?3 -
SPECS:
- Dooge X5 max (worst phone ever, can't reccomend, randomly shuts off, displays advertizement, gets super hot)

Not sure how to handle this one. My new company gave me a surface laptop to do dev ops work.
16 gigs of Ram but only a 256 SSD?
Nothing is installed so far except for MS office and acrobat and I am already running into memory issues.
My last work machine had 1TB HDD and 128 gigs of RAM (i know overkill but I could have several VM’s up and running at once).
What the fuck? Apparently the CTO ordered this piece of shit.
Also no mirco SD card like other models so I have no idea how this is going to fucking work.15 -
This is true incident.
I fried the motherboard of my new Windows 10 Home ASUS UX303UA laptop having 8 fucking gigs of RAM and 1TB HDD with dedicated Nvidia Graphics Card and video memory by just trying to repeat what I love to do which is :
Install and play Crysis on EA Origin paid channel
And
Install and program on Linux VM using Virtualbox
And
Listen to music
I am so fucking scared now that I am not going to repeat it again.
I fuck the fear of using such machines.21 -
Bought a new 1TB ssd from Intel for my laptop. The installation of the drive itself went perfectly, it works like a charm. But then I had to do a clean install of windows and ubuntu, and that's where things went wrong. The drive still works perfectly, but everything else has fallen apart. I've been fighting with them the whole working day and haven't got anything work related done. Well, a few more hours and I can head home and continue the installation with a few cold beers, that should help getting it done ;)1

Coworker: I've been working on this computer for an entire day now and it's still having issues
Boss: Well, we can give the client an option to get another SSD and clone to it before reinstalling the OS.
Coworker: But he doens't have an SSD...
Boss: Yes he does
Coworker: *opens computer* let's see, two 1TB hard drives... but no SSD... Oh, there it is. It's hidden. But it's booting too slow to be....
*epiphany*
Coworker: Oh my god. I've been telling the computer to boot to the wrong hard drive. That explains everything!1 -
hey ranteros! i like to dream and i know many of us dream of a nice machine to do anything on it, if you want to post the specs of your ideal build(s) (even a laptop, pre-built pc, space gray macbook pro... doesn't matter). and your current one.
here's mine:
ideal: {
type: desktop-pc,
cpu: intel i7-8700K (coffee lake),
gpu: nvidia geforce gtx 1080ti,
ram: 32gb ddr4,
storage: {
ssd: samsung 960 evo 500gb,
hdd: 2tb wd black
},
motherboard: any good motherboard that supports coffee lake and has a good selection of i/o,
psu: anything juicy enough, silver rated,
cooling: i don't care about liquid cooling that much, or maybe i'm just afraid of it,
case: i accept any form factor, as long as it's not too oBNoxi0Us,
peripherals: {
monitor: 1080p, maybe 1440p, i can't 4k because of the media i consume (i have tons of shit i watch in 720p) + other reasons,
keyboardmousecombo: i like logitech stuff, nothing fancy, their non mechanical keyboards are nice, for mice the mx master 2 is nice i think, i also don't care about rgb because i think it's too distracting and i'm always in darkness so some white backlight is great
},
os: windows 10, tails (i have some questions about tails i'll be asking in a different post,
}
i think this is enough for ideal, now reality:
current: {
type: laptop,
brand: acer (aspire 7736z),
cpu: pentium dual-core 2.10ghz,
gpu: geforce g210m 2gb (with cuda™!),
ram: 4gb ddr3,
storage: hdd 500gb wd blue 5400rpm (this motherfucker stood the test of time because it's still working since i bought this thing (the laptop as it is) used in late 2009 although it's full of bad sectors and might anytime, don't worry i have everything backed up, i have a total of 5 hdds varying from 320gb to 1tb with different stuff on them),
screen: 17 inch hd-ready!!! (i think it's a tn panel), i've never done a test on color accuracy, but to my eyes it's bright, colorful, and has some dust particles between the lcd and backlight hah,
other cool things: dvd player/burner, full-sized keyboard with numeric keypad, vga, hdmi, 4 usb ports, ethernet, wi-fi haha, and it's hot, i mean so hot, hotter than elsa jean and piper perri combined,
os: windows 10, tails
}
if you read this whole thing i love you, and if you have some time to spare on a sunday you can share your dream rig and the sometimes cruel current one if you dare. you don't have to share them both. i know many will go b.o.b and say "what you're hoping to accomplish, i already did bitch.", that's cool as well, brag about your cool rig!6 -
How many other cheapskates are still using just HDD'S in their systems with plans to upgrade at least the os drive to an ass 'someday'
My laptop has a 1tb 5400rpm
My desktop has
A 500gb 7200 rpm OS drive
A 3tb 5400 rpm 'everything' drive and
A 1tb 5400 rpm 'testing' drive for VM's or programs I'm just toying with20 -
This is a guide for technology noobies who wants to buy a laptop but have no idea what the SPECS are meaning.
1. Brand
If you like Apple, and love their !sleek design, go to the nearest Apple store and tell them "I want to buy one. Recommendations?"
If you don't like Apple, well, buy anything that fits you. Read more below.
2. Size
There are 11~15 inches, weight is 850g ~ 2+kg. Very many options. Buy whatever you like.
//Fun part coming
3. CPU
This is the power of the brain.
For example,
Pentium is Elementary Schoolers
i3 is Middle Schoolers
i5 is High Schoolers
i7 is University People
Dual-core is 2 people
Quad-core is 4 people
Quiz! What is i5 Dual-core?
A) 2 High Schoolers.
Easy peasy, right?
Now if you have a smartphone and ONLY use Messaging, Phone, and Whatsapp (lol), you can buy Pentium laptops.
If not, I recommend at least i3
Also, there are numbers behind those CPU, like i3-6100
6 means 6th generaton.
If the numbers are bigger, it is the most recent generation.
Think of 6xxx as Stone age people
7xxx as Bronze age people
8xxx as Iron age people
and so one.
4. RAM
This is the size of the desk.
There are 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and so one.
Think of 4GB as small desk to only put one book on it.
8GB as a desk to put a laptop with a keyboard and a mouse.
16GB as a normal sized desk to put some books, laptop, and food.
32GB as a boss sized desk.
And so one.
When you do multitasking, and the desk is too small...
You don't feel comfortable right?
It is good when there are spacious space.
Same with RAM.
But when the desk becomes larger, it gets expensive, so buy the one with the affordable price.
If you watch some YouTube videos in Chrome and do some document words with Office, buy at least 8GB. 16GB is recommended.
5. HDD/SSD
You take out the stuffs such as books and laptop from the basket (HDD/SSD), and put in your desk (RAM).
There are two kinds of baskets.
The super big ones, but because it is so big, it is bulky and hard to get stuffs out of the basket. But it is cheap. (HDD)
There are a bit smaller ones but expensive compared to the HDD, it is called SSD. This basket is right next to you, and it is super easy to get stuffs out of this basket. The opening time is faster as well.
SSDs were expensive, but as times go, it gets bigger as well, and cheaper. So most laptops are SSD these days.
There are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1024GB(=1TB), and so one. You can buy what you want. Recommend 256GB for normal use.
Game guy? At least 512GB.
6. Graphics
It is the eyesight.
Most computers doesn't have dedicated graphics card, it comes with the CPU. Intel CPUs has CPU + graphics, but the graphics powered by Intel isn't that good.
But NVIDIA graphics cards are great. Recommended for gamers. But it is a bit more expensive.
So TL;DR
Buying a laptop is
- Pick the person and the person's clothes (brand and design)
- Pick the space for the person to stay (RAM, SSD/HDD)
- Pick how smart they are (CPU)
- Pick how many (Core)
- Pick the generation (6xxx, 7xxx ....)
- Pick their eyesight (graphics)
And that's pretty much it.
Super easy to buy a laptop right?
If you have suggestions or questions, make sure to leave a comment, upvote this rant, and share to your friends!2 -
...Aaaand it's built!
Couple problems though:
- The power supply has massive coil whine when the computer is shut down
- I can't seem to get a windows installation on my USB drive11 -
So, brand new laptop. Running an i5-7200U, 8gb of RAM, just put a 1tb SSD in there. Even has an optical drive my dudes! Also got a nice lineup of new mechanical pencils cause my mom is a fucking boss. Today's been a good day.
Merry Christmas everyone! -
I honestly can't remember what the hell was wrong with me when I configured my laptop. Now I am stuck with a very decent laptop with a 200something GB hdd that is even slower than any hdd I use in my other computers. Wtf. It is ok for most Situations because I only ise it to write emails or browse the internet on the go and for the demanding jobs I have several very powerful pcs at home. But for travelling it is such a pain in the ass! I can't always upload everything to a cloud and I often don't have reliable internet connection, so I help myself with usb harddrives but that sucks as well. Argh, I need to get myself to buy a 1TB ssd. But they are so expensive!

I bought this to serve Minecraft:
HP Z420 Workstation E5-1650 V2 Six Core 3.5Ghz 32GB 256GB SSD Quadro 600 Win 10
Adding 1TB 870 Evo for Linux. Gonna default boot to Linux. I am hoping to serve up a few instances of various modpacks. Minecraft is single thread so I wanted decent per core performance.
All total I spent about $450.11 -
I need a new Laptop.
-AMD A8 processor 2,5ghz
- Windows 10 64 bit
-8gb ram
-1tb HDD
Etc..
Is this enough for programming, using eclipse and so on?16 -
Kinda pissed. Ordered a WD red plus 8TB on November 20th from newegg along with some other stuff. He drive showed up DOA on the 26th, tested everything I could to make it work. But in the end I couldn't even get it to initialize.
Ok. No problem this happens. request a return and replacement.
Got that in today. Over 2 weeks later. Fucking EXACT same problem.
and just to make sure I'm not fucking crazy I grabbed a 1tb thats been sitting on my desk unused for years. Plugged that into my NAS. Works fucking perfectly. Even able to pull it and wipe it using my USB drive reader on my desk after. I can even fucking reinitilize it back and forth from mbr to gpt.
Not asking for replacement this time. Just refund. Gonna order directly from WD. If this one fucks up I'm switching to Seagate for a couple of years4 -
I really love my mother but.
A couple of weeks ago she asked me for advice regarding a laptop. She wanted something cheap for office and stuff.
Since I know her I exactly knows she needs extreme fast boot and responsiveness. She'll go all hulk rage if the laptop doesn't boot in less than 30 seconds.
Told her to get something with ssd since storage is no issue and 4gb ram with an decent older I5. Took a whole day going through stores in my area and online to find good deals. Send her everything I found. Really good laptop for under 500€ I would've killed for.
Fast forward. She bought some 300€ shit laptop because it had 1tb memory. She didn't ask for advice just bought the cheapest that would read decently description wise.
Now she is raging all day and bitching about it being so slow and I should fix it for her since I'm an it guy etc.
Looking at the specs I nearly started to vomit. She seriously bought a laptop worse than she already had. Old i3 2gb ram 5200rpm HDD.
I told her she should return it because it is shit. But no. She insists that since it's newer it is better and I am only a lazy fuck who doesn't want to be bothered to do her a favor.
Offered the best thing I could think of. Told her I'd install Linux on it for her and teach her how to use it.
Explained it would run more smoothly since she refused to take that shit laptop back. But no. Of course she insists on using windows 10....
FUUUUUUUCK. I love my mother but seriously I'm about to explode.5 -
I decided to format party my desktop since I'm working at home every day (got a 1TB ssd to replace 150gb OS drive).
First fresh Windows install in 4 years. I had forgotten how much fuckery windows puts you through to do some basic things. I can imagine being a newbie hobbiest programmer and having to go through this stuff?
So I just embarrassingly spent 15 minutes reading and troubleshooting why you can't run a python script inside of powershell. PS just blips for a moment leaving you wondering if the script executed. So I created a test script to use a logging file handler to see if it actually ran. No.
Turns out you have to register the .py extension by appending it to your PATHEXT environment variable. Before that I was going to add it to the PS profile, but realized it takes more than a quick moment to find out which scope of PS profile is appropriate to create, and on top of that, you have to enable script execution in PS (which I recall is easy, but didn't do yet).
Tangentially, I solved an ssh issue days ago. I would tell you what it was, but I seem to have mentally blocked it due to trauma.
For real Microsoft. Yes powershell has some great advancements--my friends say so.
But this needlessly nuanced bullshit needs a little attention from you guys to save the world a shitload of time. I can only imagine what it's like for non-tech savvy people trying to learn to program and having to face this stuff.
I still haven't solved the color scheme stupidity of powershell. This is 2020 ffs. Yet seems there's no clean or intuitive way to do it.
Other issues omitted for 'brevity'21 -
First World problems. Do I upgrade my 120gb (with 40gb free) to a 256 or replace my 1tb platter (700gv free) with a 500gb SSD.6

just a poll i'm looking for from all the linux based dev's
What distro would you recommend for a front end dev? Tried ubuntu but the wifi driver wasnt supported I guess in my dev machine. Currently looking at Elementary OS, but still undecided. I would primarily like it to be Debian based or something close as I'm very familiar with apt-get debain based stuff, and dont really feel like learning an entirely new distro at them moment.
Thanks all :D

so apparently Windows 10 Pro build... 1803? 1806? (somewhere in there) refuses to allow over 1TB of pagefile if there's more than one volume with pagefiles. The system just hangs when pagefile is used if this condition isn't met.
I know because *i'm batshit fucking insane and am trying to cram 64GB of data into a PNG in PYTHON*.

After struggling all morning with my laptop, I finally accepted the fact that my 1TB hard drive died. Now I'm on a dilemma: Should I replace the drive and upgrade the RAM, or should I buy a new laptop altogether?
Current laptop is Lenovo G50-45, with AMD APU, 6GB (4+2 on graphics) and said 1TB drive.
Before this misfortune befell me, I was planning to upgrade the RAM to 8+2.
Now I'm at a loss, but my folks are willing to help.
Should I buy a new drive and RAM or should I start looking a new more dev oriented laptop? If the latter, any recommendations?3 -
!rant Need advice. Okay soooo.... I have this laptop that I use a little less often but is bugging me about. So WINDOWS just decides to RAMP UP THE HARD DRIVE TO ALL HELL WHENEVER I NEED TO USE IT.
I have a few options:
- Replace the 1TB 5400RPM with a 120GB SSD and do Linux
- Replace the 1TB with the 120GB and do a fresh install of Windows
- Replace Windows with Linux, keeping the 1TB
- or reinstall Windows
Which do you suggest and why?4 -

Why do I make everything so expensive. I'm not a hardcore enthusiast, but at the same time I wont settle for "mainstream" and so I do weird unique things that end up costing more than they should
My mech keyboards are all DIY, I've spent $150-200 on 3 different occasions for 3 different keyboards. I think I'm settling down, but boy that was rough on my wallet.
Now I'm working on a custom workstation build, but I can't just use any normal tower because I ain't no normie. I want it to be SFF/portable so I'm planning on spending $250 just on the shoebox case (DAN A4-SFX). That's probably the most expensive part, besides maybe the GPU. Current plan is R7 1700 or 2700 with 16GB, RX 580 8GB, and 1TB NVMe, around USD$1200 total maybe9 -
So arround a month back , I was watching videos and photos I clicked in the vacation I went.
All the photos and videos were in a 1TB harddisk and I connected to my TV for better viewing experience.
In the mid way, I had a power cut and suddenly TV switched off.
This was not supposed to happen because my inverter has to kick in !
Fuck it , something happened to my inverter and delay was just enough to switch the TV off.
Now TV is on , harddisk is recognised and
Hell yeah! There are no files in the harddisk!
I lost my shit !, Before I do any thing, I tried to recover the files, luckily some vacation images and videos were recovered but all of my project source code(the ones I Did not push it to github, those were done when I was learning), most of my documents etc.. were gone!
May not be the worst one , but I lost all my coding memories.I mean those projects were done in my school times.2 -
So my mum is currently in the final stages of PhD in physiology and I warned her about WannaCry (she uses windows 10 laptop)
So now its my fucking fault and I have to copy all her 900GB files to my poor 1TB Linux laptop and she wouldn't even bother copying them to the family desktop (2TB) which no one uses and has no Internet access whatsoever. Like WTF!?!?!?!??!12 -
Tried installing Antergos on an external 1TB SSD to give it a try after having checkout Mint, now my laptop won't boot from it anymore after having removed and reinserted the disk and it skips to Ubuntu's grub on my HDD or windows.
Ubuntu's grub does show antegros whenever the ssd is plugged in though, and then I get this error while trying to boot it. Also changing the boot order doesn't do much and it skips to the next thing on the list.
I'm probably going to overwrite antergos and try to use portable antergos on it, perhaps it wasn't made to hoot from a removable drive. Ubuntu and windows still work fine but ubuntu is on my hdd because the internal ssd is full of windows, and super slow.
So now I have a partitioned ssd that doesn't work and a grub entry that gives an error ugh :/ (and a slow ubuntu but that's not as bad)
Anyone else have any idea of what happened? I have definitely seen antergos work before packing up and removing the drive, so the installation was succesful.5 -
I'd like to locally encrypt files before syncing it with the cloud; what's the "best" software available for this?
I'm currently switching to STACK as my cloud service (it's a file hosting service for Dutch people that offers 1TB of free storage).
But I don't feel fully comfortable with them having access to all my personal data.
So I came to the conclusion that it would be best to locally encrypt files before syncing it with STACK. I DuckDuckGo'd but there seems to be a lot of software available for this so I'm not sure which one to use.
Which one could you recommend me? I'd prefer a free software but I'm okay with paying as long as it isn't too expensive.7 -
lol you can get now synchronous 25gbit fiber internet for home use from a swiss local provider. For $60 per month. That means you could transfer a whole M2. 1tb Samsung 970 EVO in 32 seconds.

Was working on Windows 10 laptop with SSD.
Put to sleep mode n went for lunch.
Came back, switched on, blue screen.
Restarted, can not boot.
Opened back panel, removed ssd, connected to other machine with cable, did not detect. Shit, my 1tb SSD is gone.
Took out old rusty 128gb SSD, reformatted it.
Downloaded windows 10 bootloader on USB n reinstalled windows.
From my backed up choco script, reinstalled all apps.

The moment when you short circuit a new 1TB disk because the the external disk case has on one side conductive bumpers (I think for ESD purpose) ... Who designs this shit? D:
-
Being the novice Linux user as I was, I spent nearly all night trying to configure dual boot with some distro (maybe Debian). At about 3 or 4am I was going through the distro's installer and confirmed the previously select partition actions, one of which wipe the wrong partition. 1TB gone 😅👍
Good thing was it was a fresh start for serous projects. -
When I was maybe 3 years old my dad built a PC with a server case, it was huge! The processor was probably something like 386/486 - not sure. I used to play DOS games on it all day long. And the best part is that we still have the PC and surprisingly it still runs!
(Meanwhile I am cloning my secondary 1TB HDD to a 6TB one) -
So this is a story all about how:
I went from my brother being asked to clone the disk of old laptop to a new one. My m.2 ssd being held in with duct tape because of it and me having to run a tar command that took over 5 hours to complete.
So my bro got asked by a friends mom to help her with "PC Problems". In short the old laptop was barely useable and they ordered a new one on the reccomendations of my brother. Turns out the laptop he recomended shoud have had a 1tb hdd in it. Instead it had a 256gb m.2. Note: The old disk was 500GB.
So cloning wasnt possible. He then told me, that they also bought a regular sata ssd which was supposed to go in instead of the non present hdd. So I <-Want to emphasize on this! went to work.
Ordered a ssd in the right form factor.
Made a disk image of the old HDD.
Had to drill out the screw holding in my m.2 ssd as it was stuck.
Its now held in with a piece of kepton tape.
Wrote old disk's image on new disk.
It doesnt boot in new laptop.
Spend an evening trying to rebuild boot partitions.
Fuck it, lets install windows 10 (instead of 7) and copy all the shit over manually!
Lets buy office for 30$ on g2a as it would be a pain in the ass to explain the that its normally a subscription.
Previous rant happend.
Brought them the laptop yesterday telling them I did all the work.
I collect the ssd they ordered explaing i ordered the correct one and would take tis one for me.
Still had the 500GB img file of the disk and wanted to compress it in order to put some data back in place.
The tar command took over 5 hours to complete! I havent checked on it yet as I went to sleep. -
Hi guys i need some help my visual studio professional 2017 with xamarin is running slow in my laptop
Specs
I7 4th gen
8gb ram
Gtx 850m 4gb
1tb hdd
And can you refer an IDE like ms VS11 -
So I ordered an SSD. It's 1TB for some programs I want to startup faster. I have 3*1TB HDDs to store some movies, series and personal stuff (you know what I am talking about) and a 128 M.2 SSD for Windows. After connecting the new SATA SSD it wouldn't show up. After half an hour searching for a problem related to the wiring, UEFI configuration and other mythical problems coming to my mind I took the instructions of my motherboard. This was the moment I found out that those fuck faces implemented the biological feature of turning one thing off when using another.5

I started running a Database benchmark yesterday morning, with my system configuration, expected time to complete was 36hrs(arround), so I left it and made sure no one disturbs (I stuck a note in the monitor) because it was on common system in the lab.
Then I went to my other work.
Evening ,I came to check the progress, my monitor was switched off, I thought its in power saving mode!
Fuck, I bend down and see the CPU is off!
Wtf!! Who shut it down ,even after the note.
Then I saw the electric outlet was off!
Then after wards asking ppl in the lab, they told ,the cleaning person was cleaning the switches, so yeah she could have by mistake!
* I facepalmed *
So again, I set it up with frustration!
Today morning ,I came to see the progress
FML, from no where ,
" It's in Windows automatic repair loop! "
It's been 3hrs, trying to get out of that loop without loosing the data.
1TB of data is there, took 1month to setup all the things
Fuck Microsoft for adding these kind idiotic stuff in windows.
Is there a spirit in the lab not allowing me to do benchmark? -
Tell them to not buy the ceapest $Machine. They will buy the cheapest and complain why it's not working few weeks after.
Or more specific:
Tell them to buy 1TB ext storage. They will come complain that their data didn't fit their 500GB cheap ass solution and, clearly, it's your fault 'cause 500 > 1 ...(sic!) -
Should I buy a 1TB SSD (Crucial) ~130€ or a 4TB Red HDD (Western Digital) ~120€. Want to store Games and Data. Maybe I should go full SSD for my system because its the future?18

I was planning to buy a new laptop.. any suggestion...
requirements:

OS anything other than windows.
good to have:
128gb ssd12 -
So you got new sdd and you want to try someone new slick distro. So you google slick distro and you find a blog.
You download 4 to 5 iso. Now you want to make a bootable pendrive, but you don't have pendrive. So you use your 1TB HDD. And you accidentally format the whole HDD. Now you install one by one all iso. You don't like single os you revert back to the original OS. And you have wasted your whole day.
List of distro I installed:
1) Deepin OS
2) Solus OS
3) Nitrux
4) Ubuntu 17.10
5) Pop OS (Orignal OS)10 -

Any recommendations on what I should get? 8GB DDR4 RAM or 240GB SSD
I have Dell Inspiron 3567 with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. I would just like to have an overall faster/smoother experience in my day to day tasks. Like opening up applications or building projects.
Maybe it's worth mentioning that I do a lot of Android development. Haha!13 -
What the fuck?
Did you know you can not copy Windows 10 from let's say a 1TB HDD to a 120GB SSD? It says there is not enough space... sure Windows is currently 30GB big...
FUCK YOU!6 -
So on my computer I have 3 drives. I had two m.2 ssds and one sata ssd. I thought I had misc data on my sata. Turns out I had it on the second m.2. So I have been running my game installs off of the slower sata... I found out because I am updating my m.2 drives to 2TB from 1TB. What is funny is the data on the second m.2 is just temp storage. So I pulled it and put my new second m.2 2T drive to clone from the sata. It was failing to clone over usb for some reason. Not sure if software or something with drive. Cloning in process so will find out soon. The funny part is this makes it easier to update because I was using drives wrong. DOH!
It will be nice going from 3TB to 5TB. Woot!2 -
I currently have a 3+ year old laptop.
Dell Inspiron 15 3521:
OS: Windows 10 Pro
RAM: 8GB (4+4)
Processor: Intel Core i5 3rd Gen
Video/Graphics Card: AMD Radeon 8730M 2GB (and Intel HD 4000)
Hard Disk: 1TB
It's slowly becoming sluggish and has clearly outdated hardware. I want to pursue a Master's degree in CS (Machine Learning oriented).
Should I consider upgrading? Build a PC instead? Suggestions?35 -
Some hardware experts here? Looking to upgrade my PC soon, and would like some opinion on the parts I chose. I'm going for a minimalistic Mini-ITX productivity build, but gaming also.

- CPU Cooler: AMD Wraith Prism
- GPU: MSI RX 570 8GB Armor (already have it)
- RAM: 2x 8GB TridentZ RGB
- 1. SSD: Corsair Force MP510 240GB M2 SSD
- 2. SSD: Samsung EVO 860 1TB SSD
- PSU: Corsair CX550M
- MoBo: Asus ROG Strix B350-L Mini-ITX
- Fans: 6x Thermaltake Riing 12 RGB
- Case: NZXT H200i24 -
Got an empty 30gb SSD laying around. In my PC there is one 1TB HDD with Windows and one external 1TB HDD with Steam Games and stuff on it. Would you recommend installing some linux distro onto 30gb? Would prefer Mint or Manjaro.6

I just realised I have 1TB of MS OneDrive Cloud space lying around unused. DAMNNN!!!
Just yesterday, I was thinking of backing up all my content to cloud (because just in case and past experiences of losing data).
I did a quick fact check and figured that I have ~450 GB of unbacked data.
After quick calculations, I came to a number of how many Google accounts I'll need for 15 GB per account of drive space.
Today, I was playing around with my Microsoft Developer account and saw OneDrive. I thought let's check how much free space does MS Dev subscription offers.
It showed 1024 GB. FUCK! My balls dropped.
Now here's what I did...
I have a local drive of 500 GB, which holds all the unbacked data. Now I setup my local OneDrive there and put everything into OneDrive.
And then, I moved my local Google Drive into OneDrive. A nested setup for important stuff.
So this way, less important stuff is backed up on cloud and accessible everywhere.
And more important stuff gets synced on Google Drive and OneDrive, both.
Did I do the right and sensible thing with this kind of setup?
MS Developer subscription says they expire it in 90 days but until today, they have auto renewed it always.
I still have ~500 GB of space which can be consumed.
Also, overall MS ecosystem seems much better to me than Google. Moreover, MS allows custom domain mapping which Google doesn't.
Let's see how can I entirely migrate to MS ecosystem in near future.18 -
Windows machine i5 7th gen with 12Gigs Ram and 4Gigs graphics (2 dedicated + 2 shared) and 1TB HDD+ 256 Gb SSD vs low budget MacMiNi for heavy dev? usage- JDK, Android SDK, node, containers etc.9

Current dream PC:
Dual EPYC at 128 core/256 thread or higher
1TB of RAM or more
Dual AMD GPUs
Massive RAID 10 array of 7200RPM HDDs, something like 24TB or better
A few standalone SSDs, to taste (at least one of a sizeable capacity, like 1TB?)
Total cost, like $30k or so?51 -
so my poor old hp bro is starting to give up on me after 3 years . there are both battery and performance issues. I knew its death was near when i got its keyboard replaced i saw its battery's state 6 months ago. it was fat as me . Now it can't live without the wire for more than 30 mins.
apart from that am getting frustrated with everyday performance of my system. all i open is 50 tabs of chrome and android studio where bitch gradle generates a billion byte sized files at million places and cache folders . (and sometimes a terminal and/or files and/or vscode).
I have decent specs tho i5 7th generation/8gb ddr4 ram/ 2gb nvidea graphics/ 1tb hdd. but still my ubuntu gets stuck everytime i switch between chrome and AS . (maybe i have not made correct swap partitions or maybe there is an issue due to ubuntu/windows dualboot)
what should i do ? I guess i have to spend some shit on a new battery. But apart from that, iwanted to know about performance. how to get a beter performance?
I have heard of solutions like getting an sdd or increasing ram, but am broke af and might not afford a 1tb ssd (yes i do need that much amount of memory, my system is currently at 650 something gb) and about ram i have heard it doesn't offer much improvements. is that true? What should i do?6 -
Hey all
Much rather ask here than on a subreddit full of jerks
I have a PC running Ubuntu 20.04LTS that I use as a media server.
8GB RAM
i3 6100
1TB Samsung HDD (Boot)
3TB Seagate Barracuda
2TB WD Blue
The 2TB and 3TB are NTFS drives. I formatted them that way because they are network shared to Windows machines. Often when watching videos off those drives, they kinda just stick for a second here and there. You know, like how a scratched DVD would.
This happens regardless of if I watching directly on the server or over the network on another PC or my TV
I tried copying a video over onto the boot drive and then it worked fine.
The 3TB has one bad sector and the 2TB is reportedly perfectly healthy. So any ideas?
Could it be as simple as bad sata or power connectors?
Speeds seem fine when copying to and from though20 -
So I have this habit of copying all my family pics and kids videos onto portable hard disks. Have a 500GB Western Digital since 2012 and another WD 1TB since 2016.
Had one portable HDD failure before that back in 2010, but that contained only old projects code {when I didn't know git} .
So any advice you guys have for me on managing backups of these life memories? I mean I don't trust cloud storage - Google Drive, DropBox etc. And don't want any 3rd party poking into my stuff. That's why these items go straight from Camera to HDD.
What should I do to prepare for another failure? And is there any kind of RAID available in the form of portable solution?
Is it a good idea to change HDD every 5 years or so?10 -
Both laptops have the same price.
which one you think is better ?
(already used) MacBook Air 250GB SSD Nvidia Graphics 4GB RAM Intel Core i5 Processor
(brand new) HP Pavilon 1TB HDD Nvidia Graphics 12GB RAM Intel Core i7 Processor.30 -
You have to give it to Crysis devs. A game from 2007 that I tried on my setup
32 GB GDDR5 RAM.
nVIDIA RTX 3080M
AMD 5900HX 8 Core
1TB NVME SSD
Ultra settings hit about 45-50 FPS and I have to plug earphones in to zone out the laptop fan sound.5 -
Need some help choosing a laptop (budget is up to 2000 EUR)
Initially 6 months ago I bought Dell G5 (5587) for 1300 EUR and it had i7 8750H CPU, 6GB NVDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD+1TB HDD.
However turned out to be a piece of shit because dell fucked up their thermal management badly and they don't give proper access for their users to control the fans. Even when you force fan control via Windows test build then you will face a dissapointment since most games won't run properly on Windows test mode. So anyways I got rid of that laptop. For more info you can have a look here https://dell.com/community/... and there are dozens of topics on reddit about that.
So yeah currently looking for a decent gaming/movies/coding laptop which gives full access to undervolting/fan control.
Currently I'm looking into Razer Blade 152 -
I fucked up my Windows installation by moving AppData to a secondary (1TB HDD) drive... dude... I wish they started a new and better Windows without all the backwards compatibility shit for new computers like mine, so we can do not complex, but not simple shit like freaking moving a "system" folder (that should only be for *apps data*).rant external disk i may have to reinstall again god damnit windows 1tb appdata hdd fucked up installation corrupted9

WOO!!! Taking cord cutting to the extreme!!
The dual channel TV tuner arrived, took it out for a test drive by setting up a few scheduled recordings.
Quality isn't as good as 4K TV and it takes a lot of space as it doesn't use a compressed format... But no more Prime, commercials, and now can watch at 2x speed! Plus that's what the 1TB HD is for...
Though now my worries about drive failure are coming back...14 -
Background: Got a macbook, A external HDD(2TB) of which +- 1TB was used.
Yesterday i moved all my personal projects from my work laptop to my external, to move to my macbook.
One of my clients(Freelancing) calls asking me to install new hardware, install software and fix OS(Windows 8.1).
I leave work and go directly to said client and he hands over his Lenovo S20 Touch(No CD/DVD Drive).
I install windows 10 and other software from my flash(Already on there)
Good, Everything is ready to go. I go home and finally get to sit down with my baby(MacBook)
Me: *Plugs in external*
...
nothing.
Opens Finder, can't find flashdrive
Check MacKeeper
MacKeeper: VirusDetected
Me: *Pissed*
Client calls.
Client: Hey is everything ok with the laptop, no viruses no nothing. Because everytime i insert a flashdrive it gets a virus and i have to buy a new one.
Me: I installed windows 10 on it, it should be fine with defender now.
Heart: *shattered* YOU COULD'VE TOLD ME THAT BEFORE FUCKER!!
i never knew people like this still exist1 -
My first CS class is a basic introductory C++ course. Won't even be going into OOP.
So I want to use my own laptop for the course, but I have a Mac. Thought I could use Visual Studio for Mac for the class, but turns out Visual Studio for Mac is really only for Multiplatform development with C#. Ok, then, screw that. Just wasted 20GB and an evening installing that just to uninstall it.
I'm using JetBrain's CLion for now, but apparently we'll be doing some graphics work later this semester so I'm going to need to install Windows via Bootcamp and Visual Studio there... but my SSD is too small...
I currently have Windows/Bootcamp installed on a 1TB external hard disk but that is slow af. My SSD is only 250GB and I've already used half of it for various programs I need (Adobe crap plus Logic crap cuz I make videos and music).
My only option here is to buy a new SSD but only one manufacturer sells those (OWC), and a 1TB SSD is stupid expensive, $700 almost as much as I paid for this laptop used.
So, I guess I'm just kinda deciding right now whether upgrading storage is really worth it...6 -
Hey guys, I've recently purchased an Asus Laptop (i3 7100U - 2.4GHz, 4gb ddr4 , 1tb HDD, 15.6 FHD,). I've swapped HDD with an SSD ( Kingston 120gb) . Everything seems great, Laptop's performance is good, pycharm runs faster etc. However, when I shutdown the laptop, it takes nearly 3-4 minutes to shutdown. Restarting laptop hardly takes 30 seconds. The only problem is shutting down. I've tried everything, resintalled OS( windows 10 home (GPT partition)) , drivers and os are up to date, updated bios but there is no change. It still takes 3-4 minutes to shutdown. Any ideas?1

Inspite of having a decent pc setup, ubuntu keeps stopping.
My pc specs are as follows :-
RAM - 16 GB DDR4
HDD - 1TB (Windows 10 professional)
SSD - 240 GB(Ubuntu 20.04LTS)
GPU - Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 ti
CPU - Intel i5-9400F (6) @ 4.100GHz
My daily usage hardly requires 5 gigs of ram. Ubuntu works suddenly hangs and works fine again...after sometime again this thing happens...in discord the same thing happens but more frequently than the normal workstation. When i give my password to login, then also it takes time more than normal to start. Even bootup takes like roughly 40 seconds whereas windows boots within 2-3 seconds. Any help would be appreciated.15 -
Fucking Ubuntu.
I got the shit because wanted to try it out.
It was intended to get installed in a SSD, which had a Windows installation and 100gb free.
Even showed the option to install it alongside Windows.
I heard a little voice in my head saying "manual partition just to be sure".
But thought Hey, this option says it will install it alongside Windows.
What happened? Ubuntu used another drive, part of a 3 disk RAID0 array.
So now I've completely lost 1tb information (because it was THE backup).
At least I still have 100gb free on the ssd.
Fuck you ubuntu and Fuck you canonical!5 -
I have a laptop with 8gb ram, 1Tb HDD, i5 7th gen running windows 10 and Ubuntu. Right now I'm using windows 10 as my primary OS, I'm simply addicted to the gestures especially the four finger swipe to switch desktops. I have been thinking of adding an SSD to the mix and my budget only permits a 120gb M.2 or a 250gb normal ssd.
The advantage with m.2 is that I can keep my HDD and boot my OS from the ssd and maybe install my IDEs on there but with the other ssd I'm gonna have to take my HDD out and use it as an external.
I read somewhere that 250gb above SSDs are the ones worth spending money on and that the 120 and 250 doesn't justify the price or life.
So my question is, should I go for an SSD? and if I do which one to go for m.2 or the normal one?3 -
Just came across stackblitz dot com (guess we can’t post URLs yet womp womp, how about, I dunno, just letting it be text?!? Crazy I know) & I have a new 12.9 iPad Pro 1TB arriving tomorrow…
Time for an experiment to see if it can be at all feasible to actually develop on an iPad…3 -
Disclaimer: I'm surprisingly bad with hardware.
Bonus will come in soon and its time for a new laptop. Had my xps13 since ~2016 and I absolutely loved it - the keyboard is amaaazing.. But the display is broken and as its a touch, its ridiculously expensive to replace so that's not an option..
Want to keep it around 1k$ and mostly care about the keyboard being nice, robust case (not plastic), size (no bigger than 13") and storage (at least 1TB SSD).
Ideally it would have an integrated SD slot and at least 1 USB-A...
Any suggestions? I'm gonna put Linux on it anyway so performance just has to be medium.
Thinking about getting another xps but they got a good bit more expensive and I know there's other devices our there nowadays that check the boxes, like thinkpad for example.
Just looking for some opinions, advice and suggestions.
Thanks in advance1 -
So my TV tuner outputs the videos as 1-20GB TS files... To my secondary 1TB HDD...
But that's my main storage drive too. And well I'm recording every week and maybe transcribing some to keep.
Also seems for Plex, need to transcribe to mp4 beforehand.
So now I'm worried about drive failure, seems most DVR drives last around 2-4yrs... depending on use...
Wondering if I need an external USB "throwaway drive" or another internal, not sure whether there's an empty slot, need to check -

So, total hardware noobie here. My laptop is giving me shit long Android studio build times and i am thinking of adding a ssd in it .thoughts? My current laptop specs are win10/8gb ram/1 tb hdd/ i5 7th gen
Recently i had a battery repair where that guy confirmed that i don't have some kind of ssd slot (idk the name) but ssd could be placed in the area of hdd, and hdd could be attached in the place of optical disk using "caddy" something.
On hearing this, my friend is advising me not to get caddy attached as it would still somehow provide slower speeds than just the ssd. is it true?
I was thinking of going for a 240gb ssd but if my 1tb hard disk is removed, i would have a to rethink about the softwares i use, since my C:drive is usually taking around 500 gb itself17 -
I had to fix errors on my seagate 1tb expansion drive. Not only did it take 16 hours but also it failed to fix everything. I had to repair partition and format to ext4. NTFS errors can't be fixed on Linux. Fuck exFAT and M$.2
