    as a part-time photographer, and developer, i can relate to this very much :( tif files take up so much space! also the dozens of side projects i never finish

    I always try to buy double the storage I think I need. Even then it's not enough.

    240GB is the minimum you should get these days. Smaller than that is waste of money.

    Prepare a big ammount of $. I don't know why they are so freaking expensive. I would die for 2 1TB SSD units.

    Install programs to your other drive. Depending on your OS, 20-40gb would only be needed, leaving you with 60gb or so remaining.

    You can partition your other harddrive so that your documents are stored there.
