Had a customer on the phone who couldn't figure something out. Wanted to give him instructions so I asked him whether he used mac or windows (getting used to not including Linux in that question). His reply: uhm this has a weird name... do you know elementary os?
Me: you're a Linux user?!
Him: yes, I'm done with windows and mac.
Then i gave him the instructions. Nice twist of the day!12 -
Windows: everything is proprietary and inconsistent
Mac: everything is expensive
Linux: everything is a text file12 -
Client: We want it to run on both, windows and Linux servers.
Me: Why would you want such a thing?
Client: The user should be able to connect to the server, independently from what system he or she is using.
Me: So... should we setup a Mac OS X server too?10 -

Me: Linux :).

Manager: I can’t believe you use Linux, that is such an outdated operating system. You need to get with the times and move to a more modern one like Windows or Mac. Literally NOBODY uses Linux anymore, do you still go to Blockbuster Video too? Ha!

Just had a Mac user in a Linux chat. Guy was trying to setup MySQL, yada yada yada... Turns out that the guy didn't know what a PATH is.
Let that sink in for a moment. A developer, with a hipster MacBook that probably cost him several grand.. but doesn't know what a PATH is.

At work today, a colleague was talking to a customer. Only maccer in the building (every other Linux (support) engineer uses Linux).
CW: ahhh we understand eachother, Mac is the way to go!
*Gets nasty looks from about all Linux engineers*
CW: I'm going to retract that since I want to make it to the end of this day alive 😅
*Everyone laughing*3 -
Co-worker loves macos' features/interface but for him, an operating system being open source is a very important thing.
So important that he ditched his mac for a Linux machine. (regular Ubuntu)
Today we recommended him Elementary OS.
Guess who's completely in love!

Last night I had a virtual machine up on my Mac running Arch Linux. I had 6 of my 8 gigs of ram allocated to the VM. Well I left it open last night when I went to bed and forgot about it this morning. My wife just called me at work to say something is wrong with the Mac. "Everything is running slowly and it looks different." I had to walk her through the process to shut it down, but she got to run her first Linux command: sudo shutdown now.
She is now calling herself a hacker...6 -

I was starting a new job and asked if developers had a choice between a PC, Linux or a Mac. I didn't get a response so I sent an e-mail saying I'd prefer a PC/Linux if that was allowed, or a PC/Windows. First day I get a Mac. Boss says something about how you have to have a Mac to develop on; the company doesn't have good Windows laptops with 16GB of ram.
I really do not like macOS. I wouldn't care if it wasn't for the fact that for the past three jobs, I have always been able to use a Linux machine at work (since 2012). So over the weekend I got it dual booting. It was not easy. Apple's hardware is fucking awful. The keyboard, mouse and bluetooth are all connected to the serial bus.
I got it all working though, at least well enough for my job. It feels so good to have a tiling window manager. (I know Mac does have some now, but I really love i3). I made a guide in case another developer finds themselves in my spot:

@dfox feature request: polls
It would be great to ask (for example) "what's your preferred os?" and have ppl respond by hitting 1 of the 4 options:

b) mac (30%, 300 votes)
c) windows (0%, 0 votes)
d) other (10%, 100 votes)
Sorry if already requested.26 -

I'm not even that old and I've had it with young cocksure, full of them self language/environment evangelists.
- "C# is always better than Java, don't bother learning it"
- "Lol python is all you need"
- "Omg windows/linux/mac sucks use this instead"
The list goes on really, at some point you have got to realize that while specialization is great, you have to learn a little bit of everything. It broadens you horizon a lot.
Yea, C# does some nifty stuff, but Java does too, learn both. Yea I'm sure Linux is better for hosting docker containers, but your clients are on mac or windows, learn to at least navigate and operate all three etc. Embrace knowledge from all the different tech camps it can only do you good and you will be so much more flexible and employable than your close minded peers :)
Hell even PHP has a lot to teach us (Even more than just to be a bad example, har har)9 -

Not just another Windows rant:
*Disclaimer* : I'm a full time Linux user for dev work having switched from Windows a couple of years ago. Only open Windows for Photoshop (or games) or when I fuck up my Linux install (Arch user) because I get too adventurous (don't we all)
I have hated Windows 10 from day 1 for being a rebel. Automatic updates and generally so many bugs (specially the 100% disk usage on boot for idk how long) really sucked.
It's got ads now and it's generally much slower than probably a Windows 8 install..
The pathetic memory management and the overall slower interface really ticks me off. I'm trying to work and get access to web services and all I get is hangups.
Chrome is my go-to browser for everything and the experience is sub par. We all know it gobbles up RAM but even more on Windows.
My Linux install on the same computer flies with a heavy project open in Android Studio, 25+ tabs in Chrome and a 1080p video playing in the background.
Up until the creators update, UI bugs were a common sight. Things would just stop working if you clicked them multiple times.
But you know what I'm tired of more?
The ignorant pricks who bash it for being Windows. This OS isn't bad. Sure it's not Linux or MacOS but it stands strong.
You are just bashing it because it's not developer friendly and it's not. It never advertises itself like that.
It's a full fledged OS for everyone. It's not dev friendly but you can make it as much as possible but you're lazy.
People do use Windows to code. If you don't know that, you're ignorant. They also make a living by using Windows all day. How bout tha?
But it tries to make you feel comfortable with the recent bash integration and the plethora of tools that Microsoft builds.
IIS may not be Apache or Nginx but it gets the job done.
Azure uses Windows and it's one of best web services out there. It's freaking amazing with dead simple docs to get up and running with a web app in 10 minutes.
I saw many rants against VS but you know it's one of the best IDEs out there and it runs the best on Windows (for me, at least).
I'm pissed at you - you blind hater you.
Research and appreciate the things good qualities in something instead of trying to be the cool but ignorant dev who codes with Linux/Mac but doesn't know shit about the advantages they offer.undefined windows 10 sucks visual studio unix macos ignorance mac terminal windows 10 linux developer22 -

Sigh.......das it...i am bringing the mac or one of my Linux machines tomorrow........11 -
Soooo, after raising my issue regarding microsoft's massive invasion of privacy and removing control from the user a couple of my friends, ahem I mean "aquaintances", said this to me:
"Get a mac! So clean, lightweight and user friendly and won't spy on you".
Clearly people who never looked at their list of background processes and installed little snitch. I swear, every couple of minutes something is trying to phone home to Apple.
Now I've been pretty open to all platforms (Win/Mac/*NIX/misc) until recently but this has reached a point it is no longer funny.
When I get a moment I'm gonna shove linux so far up that machine's arse Steve Jobs is gonna feel it in the ether!14 -
So everyone at the company I work for is getting a new machine before Christmas
Since I do a bunch of backend development and devops stuff (despite actually being hired as an Android developer), I requested that my machine use Linux, since that's what the servers run
Windows was the fallback OS I requested, since it's what I'm most familiar with
The machine that I will probably get will be a Mac
Stay tuned for further updates to this most thrilling of tales10 -
I actually like Microsoft these days. Despite developing on Mac machines, we use VSTS for code repo, build/release pipelines and work item tracking, and Azure for all things cloud. It all works incredibly well together and at low cost.
Microsoft has changed ethos massively in the last few years. In my opinion, the classic dev mantra of “Microsoft is shit and evil, Linux is flawless” is outdated and getting kind of boring.6 -
i start develop using windows, but as the time goes by, i really feels the need to change to linux/mac-os.

1.) get a shit ton of music on your playlist (and listen while coding)
2.) don't give a shit about others preferences (use mac/Linux/windows ...; and the bestbest IDE is .... ). Use what you feel comfortable with
3.) Try to have a coding buddy
4.) take advices about coding style, structuring and other important things
5.) NEVER EVER STOP LEARNING2 -

After fresh windows install: Fuck, now to install everything I need and all the updates over the next few hours
After fresh Mac install: oh god I hope it worked...
After fresh Linux install: sudo apt upgrade and done!14 -
Why is it that when someone mentions they really like windows or that someone should/might want to install windows, hardly anything happens (maybe some funny comments from linuxers but no hate or anything) (same goes for OSX) but when someone makes the same comment about linux, they get burned into the ground as a 'Linux nazi'? I am not only talking about devRant (it happens here sometimes as well) but also about my study and real life.
If someone would mention that it might be useful to install windows or OSX over Linux, it was all good but the FUCKING SECOND I mention it might be useful (or other linuxers) to use/install Linux, we are immediately put away as Linux nazi's.
On devRant I've tried to keep this shit to myself because I don't want to start wars but I think I am going to quit doing that and actually show my fucking opinion. Yes, that might also result in some people seeing me as a fucking linux nazi but fuck being burned into the ground every time I give my opinion regarding this.
Fucking hell. (nothing personal to any devRanters by the way but I am starting to get really tired of this shit).40 -

This sort of shit really pisses me off, yes PC has a higher market share, but I had to comment. Mobile gaming dwarfs PC so should we even bother with PC?
And people are agreeing with his point, it's fucking stupid, people should be able to enjoy something no matter what platform, linux, Mac, windows or anything else...

5 stages of failing WIFI connectivity on Linux
This morning I woke up my laptop to start my work day. I have 2 very important meetings today, so I better get all prepared.
"Wifi connection failed"
Syslog says:
- wpa_supplicant: wlp9s0: SME: Trying to authenticate with <MAC>
- kernel: wlp9s0: authenticate with <MAC>
- kernel: wl9s0: send auth to <MAC> (try 1/3)
- kernel: wl9s0: send auth to <MAC> (try 2/3)
- kernel: iwlwifi: Not associated and the session protection is over already...
- kernel: wl9s0: send auth to <MAC> (try 3/3)
- kernel: wl9s0: authentication with <MAC> timed out
#### DENIAL #####
No biggie, let's try another AP (I have 3). All 3 failed to connect. Fine, let's try my phone's hotspot! FAILED!!!!!
w00t.... okay, let's restart the router... but failing to connect to a phone hotspot is already a worrying sign.
Wifi connection failed
wtf.. disable and re-enable wifi
Wifi connection failed
#### ANGER #####
the fuuuuuuck. Maybe my router is dead. But my phone connects to it, no fuss. My personal lappy also connects there easily.
wtf... Does that mean I'm about to lose my uptime?? Come one!! It's Linux - there MUST be something I could do! I don't see processes hanging in D state so the radio must be fine - it's gotta be a software issue!
ChatGPT – type all the log entries manually, via phone (that took a while...). Nothing useful there: update firmware, restart NetworkManager, etc.
#### BARGAINING #####
Alright... How about a USB dongle? Plug it in and wifi connects immediately! Yayyy!!! But that's only b/g/n and I'd very much like to have ac. It works well as a limping backup, but not something I'd use for the meetings.
rfkill block/unblock all the radios. No change. USB dongle connects right away but the PCIe adapter keeps throwing notifications at me with failure messages. It's annoying, to say the least.
So I've already tried
- restarting the router(s)
- disabling/reenabling the radios
- multiple APs
- suspending/waking again several times
- praying
#### DEPRESSION #####
The only thing I haven't tried yet is the most cruel one - restarting the laptop. But that's unfair... It's LINUX! How could it disappoint me. I have so many tmux sessions open, so many unsaved leafpad notes, terminal histories with oh so comfy ^r and ! retriggers all ready and waiting to be executed...
#### ACCEPTANCE #####
But I can't miss the meeting. So I slowly start closing off apps, starting with the least important ones, trying to preserve as much history and recent commands as I can. I'm gonna lose my uptime, that's the inevitable obvious truth... Linux has failed me. Or maybe it's a hardware issue... I can't be sure until I restart.
I must reboot.
#### A NEW HOPE #####
Hold on.. What if... What if before restarting I try to reload the Intel wifi kernel module? Just for the giggles. I've got nothing to lose anyway...
rmmod iwlmvm
rmmod iwlwifi
modprobe iwlwifi
modprobe iwlmvm
*WiFi Connected*
YESSSS!!!!!!!!! My uptime is saved!
403 days and counting! YEAH BABY!!!

It's only after switching to Linux you realize what all you were missing as a Dev. Well, as i'm ranting, here for Linux too :
I have a small ubuntu server VM, worked very well for last 6 months. Now "System in read only mode". Fucking apt-get upgrade fucked with something. I don't want to look, so I'll just rebuild a fresh vm.
And macOS should take sometyhing too : Who the fuck decided "enter" is for editing the name of file ?! really !
Well, ALL os are shit, all have downsides, I need my own OS. But I still want AA games... So windows for me.25 -
So yesterday I got paired with this guy in physics class. First thing he does is ranting at my windows, after which he rants at his Mac, and then launches vim and tells me about how he only uses Linux, and how C+ is the only real programming language, and that maybe Python could be accepted as one too. Then he finishes by telling me how web development sucks because it's so high level... Suddenly I lost hope for Sweden...8

Thing's aren't going to evolve and get better if everyone just abandon's shit at the first fucking hurdle, remember when windows wasn't good at gaming compared to mac, well that fucking changed pretty quick didn't it...
(If anyone is curious how this came about, I'm am still holding hope for Gamemaker studio 2 to come to Linux but in the mean time though about running it's compiler through mono and building a front end to see if I can even do it but was talking to someone about it and they said I'm wasting my time because Linux is shit for games)5 -
Really hate when people say development for Linux is really difficult, especially when it comes to game development and porting engines...
It really isn't, it's no more difficult to bloody windows and personally think it's easier than Mac development. Worse comes to, mono exists and is pretty damn stable, getting something ported to Linux really isn't as difficult as people try and make it out to be -,-13 -
LINUX TO THE RESUCE!
I was helping with stuff for my ComTech teacher. For some reason his mac refused to format an SSD.
Dont worry though, mkfs.hfsplus had no problems :D -
OS surgical operations allowances...
Linux allows most of the manipulations, windows allows some while Mac didn't.... Feeling awesome with Linux.... Try yourself..!8 -
What do you think about swift?
Does it have future?
It went open-source and is very fast and easy.
I found this project which brings swift to the server side in linux and mac: https://www.perfect.org/ and it seems promising.10 -
Slack's latest update just broke the darkify hack. It's 2019, right? It is unbelievable that there is no built-in dark mode for Linux, Mac, or even windows. I mean, they are aware of dark mode. It is available on mobile without trouble. Get it together, slack!11

Years ago I was working in local cinema as a student job from time to time and used to sleep after shifts at my uncle's. Uncle did not had internet but there were so many wlans all around. Since I had nothing to do for hours after shift, I downloaded Backtrack linux at home, made live dvd of it and saved a two articles of "how to hack wifi" to text files.
It took me 4 hours to break WEP, since I was total lame, and it was the only one WEP around. They also had mac restrictions set to router, so I changed my mac address to one of their devices, logged in to router and added our mac address. For my uncle it was complete magic but since he is total geek to linux he liked it.
Fast forward weeks later. When I came to my uncle's house he was downloading like ton of linux distributions. Literally each one. Gigabytes of data. I told him not to do so because sooner or later neighbour will notice, but he did not care. Guess what, he notices, probably slow internet and (maybe) bigger bills, I do not know, but owner just changed protocol to WPA2, not changing password. So the story continued for almost 2 years. Felt a bit sorry for neighbour but did not expect such an outcome. I just wanted to watch youtube videos and scroll social networks, keeping low profile so no one notice.1 -
I was finishing compiling the linux kernel in tty mode for a school project in the subway cuz the class was over and it was not finished. A guy came to me and said : I used to do that, but on a Mac. Then he left. I was like : wtf do you think I'm doing? You don't compile the linux kernel on a fucking Mac. And why would you mention it was a Mac anyway?I guess he just did ls -al on his Mac in tty.6

I have a Mac at work right now, and if/when it putters out, I would be fine with another, but not if it's the touch bar variety. In that case, I'll ask for a surface or a latitude(the options the company offers to the MacBook) and just hijack Linux onto it. I won't even ask if I can, because I'm sure the answer will be no.7
-
Personally, I am fine with Windows and I run it on a couple boxes. Just don't be the Ignorant Windows Guy at work who needs constant help when there's not a GUI for something. Not as annoying as Elitist Linux Guy or Pompous Mac Guy, but still annoying.1
-
2 months using Mac now, it's pretty cool and all, but sometimes I just miss Linux for no particular reason :"(6
-
Oh my gosh. Windows is...eh..
I mean, it is outdated and slow, has bugs and many other stuff, but do you know why I use it? It is widely supported.
Compare application support on Mac or Linux! It is nothing compared to Windows.
However, I will still have to deal with it for a very very long time...3 -
i understand and accept why some people prefer mac.
every mac i have ever used has shit the bed during normal use. while windows and Linux machines have too, however less frequently. unlike mac there is always something i can personally do about it to fix the problem.
i like having complete control over my computer and don't like the idea of paying a premium to be told how i can or can't use it.6 -
devRant should add a new feature to create polls
e.g. 1: What OS do you prefer?
- Mac
- Linux
- Windows
e.g. 2: Which programming language do you prefer for web dev, mobile dev, etc.
- Java
- PHP
...
I bet after a while a cyber war would commence. And that would be devRant's fault because it gave developers a reason to hate each other.
So devRant please disregard my request for the new feature.
Narrator: And then he laughed sardonically.4 -
alias cd='open http://itisamystery.com; cd'
We once tried to add in a sleep in there, so it would delay opening up the website for a few minutes, but it would cd immediately, as to not alert the victim to the trigger.
First time we tried it, it totally did not work as expected. He tried running npm install first thing, and it was like a fork bomb with all of these sleeping threads.
Comment below if you have a good fix! I'm no Linux ninja. Oh, I'd also like to know a good Linux version of this since open is a Mac thing.2 -
Update to my previous desire to install Arch Linux on my MacBook...
Well, I installed it, played around a bit... now gonna install OS X back... primary reasons being the fact that there r a lot of things which u must do to get arch to work perfectly in MacBook... ( special kernels and stuff ) and I use an iPhone 😐... in other words, m locked to the ecosystem... for now...
I was so hoping to use arch... it wud have been amazingly fast on the SSD... 😍😍
No m not gonna use VM since it’s not fun 😂😂
Wish iTunes worked in Linux too ☹️😕7 -
I seriously don't get it guys, can you answer to this post with your job and the os you use?
I'm a games developer and I'm happy on Windows,I couldn't even imagine switching to Linux or Mac, but everybody's on either a Mac or Linux.
I have to know why.41 -
Could we all just agree that Mac is a piece of shit in terms of performance? Specially with those lousy animations and that stupid dock?
Got Archlinux running on my Macbook. Happy days again.3 -
I want a Mac so bad but I’m a poor starving student so I can’t buy one but I’m so fucking sick of windows
I’m considering installing a Linux distro but I don’t think my music production software works on Linux??
Anyone using native instruments software (specifically maschine?) using Linux?9 -
I want to get into iOS development in the near future.
Problem is I already have a really powerful Linux laptop which I use for Android dev and I don't want to buy another overpriced macbook.
Are mac mini's worth it? Or are they too weak13 -
Looks like my new years resolution is to be more controversial.
I realize that all the OSes can easily have 10s with the correct setup, however that wouldn't be much fun.
Bit of background:
After I almost threw a Windows pc against the wall for not being able to ssh from the cmd after I had already spent ages trying to install something, which was one command on the Linux and Mac terminal, I thought about the differences between the 3. Then, when a friend of mine (who has used Linux for many years) spent many hours trying to connect a pair of headphones to his Linux computer, I decided to make this graph to spark a debate and hear your opinions.8 -
Apple’s ecosystem is restricting, Windows 11 is shit and I don’t like Linux much.
Doomed, aren’t I?15 -
Have anyone ever been forced to use a certain operating system at work?
Any linux users that has been forced to use Windows or Mac?17 -

*Carry a "Hackerman" face all day*

I don't get why certain people always complain about the OS they have to use at work... I get, that as a person who really uses aspects of the OS like a sysadmin or something like that, has valid points... but no... as a projectmanager or productmanager, whos tools are all browserbased... "in Windows I know where all the things are..." is not a valid excuse to hate on the OS...
What do you want to do? Change system settings everyday? Use PowerShell to create your Jira tickets?8 -
hey guys yesterday I got roasted cuz I was using a pc instead of Mac for development work and this was my reply. For me I don't gonna spend 2000+ $ only for 1 sec faster app loading and only for writing codes if someone willing to spend lot of money then they have completely command on there system Mac is very overpriced and overprotective it doest allow dual boot tell u what Mac sucks in 4k video editing, games,it don't even support maya or 3ds max rendering on Mac is gonna hit you hard , and there is same for linux but because it's free I don't much care about it but it is extremely crash and error prone I've installed Ubuntu nearly 20+ computer and after few days some kind of internal error occurred if u cancelled any ongoing installation it's going to hijack your system not let order program to install unless you manually clean that shit out ,yea Unix systems have bit faster app opening time and I appreciate that .
For nerds like me it's not only about coding stuff I like to do crazy stuffs17 -
I'm extremely sick of Windows PCs and their reliability, if it's not some stupid bug it's some idiotic overheat issue or driver issue or compatibility issue, I never hear Mac or Linux people complain about their PCs but I could write a book of complaints for Windows11
-
I've been ricing my Linux desktop for a few months now yet again and again I come back to a Mac-like theme.
Frustrating.1 -
Unpopular opinion: macOS is better for working on the go than Linux.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Linux... for servers and desktops. Linux, particularly Arch, is incredible at running only the bare minimum of what you need in a system, so that you use the power of the machine to fullest. Don't get me started on the out-of-the-box compatibility with development in general.
However, I just spent 2 days trying to get the freaking wifi working on my Linux laptop. When I opened up my Macbook, it *just worked.* I really don't have the time to be dicking around with configs when I am working on the go.
Especially with technologies such as Docker, Git, and SSH, it's actually really easy to have the same development environment on my macbook and Linux desktop... and as much as I hate to say it, I think it's no more Linux on laptops for me anymore.10 -
Whenever someone starts a sentence with "But [Linux|Windows|Mac] is better because..." in the open space developer pit...3

I cannot work on my personal project this weekend.. because the fucking IT team gave me a fucking mac charger yesterday and it fuckin stopped working today.. FUCKING waste of a weekend!!!!
I guess I will be gaming for the next 48 hours.. on my windows PC..
(And please don't say Linux Rocks in the comments coz I had to work on an iOS app..)12 -
In my new job I'm supposed to get a macbook.
I've never used a mac but I'm a long time Linux PC user.
What should I expect/note?15 -
KDE Connect is really a blessing. The fact that I can do everything and more with Android plus Linux combo than iOS plus Mac is superb. I mean, I can remotely send power off command, start Spotify and control it, remotely start apt upgrade, or turn off the screen is so useful. Plus I can reply to the any message from any messaging app, get notifications and transfer files quickly from PC to smartphone and the other way is just great.3
-
I miss working on Linux. It’s so bare and I get to tinker with a lot stuffs. I like working with Mac though, less problems and more productivity; but it’s just tiny bit bloated.
I think the perfect balance is having two machines; one Mac and the other Dell XP 15 loaded with Ubuntu.1 -
After only using Linux for some weeks I decided to start my mac again.
Half of the programs didn't work anymore, I shit you not -
My roommate is a hardcore apple fan boy. Me and my other roommate use windows so we actually installed windows on his Mac.

I was using Ubuntu directly on the workstation, but needed to use things like outlook, lync, and other tools that dislike Linux :(1 -

Anyone wants a virus for their mac?

Every developer I know from work and uni uses either Linux or Mac for development (most of them are web devs), never seen anyone using Windows for development purposes :/
How, what and why do you develop on Windows? Not bashing, just curious14 -
So there's one guy working on a Linux machine (everyone else is on a Mac) and it always caused problems because it kept freezing/crashing.
now he's going to get a Mac
turned out there was no swap assigned

Mozilla launched Firefox 72 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android which includes fingerprinting scripts blocked by default, less annoying notifications and Picture-in-Picture video on macOS and Linux. See the release notes for the details of these features and other changes.

I use a Mac for developing. I'm thinking of using a VM with a linux distro to develop in my Windows machine. What's a good distro for developing Node/React apps?9
-
Recently I see people installing Linux distros to their Macbooks. Is MacOS that bad? I mean I use Ubuntu in my daily life but let's accept that most of the Linux distros (for desktop of course) has hickups. I haven't used MacOS but there is a big company maintaining and optimizing it for just few machines. What is the point installing a Linux distro to a Mac?6
-
I'm a mac AND a PC! Are you? I actually quite like both of them.
My dev setup has both operating systems, with a shared mouse and keyboard (using Synergy) -> and I love it! It feels like I get the ability to do anything. There are some apps I prefer on the WIndows side and others that are fine on the mac. I use git and dropbox to share dev files between the two seamlessly.
I come from a Linux background, so I like that I can use bash on the mac, although on the PC I use Powershell mostly. I also have used the Ubuntu linux subsystem on the PC very effectively.
I was originally forced into the situation due to iPhone mobile development - now I don't mind at all!
On the mobile side I happily switch between iOS and Android all the time.
Love the way so many technologies exist to let you work across platforms so well.
Anyone else use both at the same time?10 -
Ubuntu 16 lts wifi drivers have problem and i am unable to fix this shit, everytime there's a new problem with ubuntu I hate ubuntu now for these many problems I'm not going to use it again.
If I didn't find any good linux distro I think I should switch to mac31 -
Me: Ok it looks like Gamemaker will never come to linux and I can't get it running under wine... Suppose it wont hurt to learn monogame while I have Linux, Mac and windows to hand...
*Googles tutorials*
Me: Oh god there is fuck all, it just points to XNA stuff... Oh look a tutorial for monogame itself!
*Notices its an official Microsoft tutorial*
Me: Swallow your pride Alex... Go to the dark side and use a Microsoft product willingly...
... I feel dirty... As if i should have a bleach bath...2 -
So thought I would install Visual Studio 2017 for Mac and ho boy what a load of shit that is!
They say it's designed to be macOS styled yet it is literally the same visual style and element location to mono-develop for linux and mac, piss poor effort when even creating new project uses the same form layout.2 -
I get amazed almost every work day by how buggy the File Explorer is in Windows 11.
Actually, it's the whole Microsoft experience, that never worked for me. Most products are not at all intuitive (e.g. Google Sheet UX > Microsoft Excel UX), some other products shouldn't even be released (e.g. I've tried Loop, which is supposed to be a Notion clone, but it's more like a cheap demo).
I really need to start insisting about Linux, so my employer allows me an installation (or at least they could provide a Mac, if Linux doesn't cut it)4 -
Ok so there are a lot of things out there like #WhyIUseLinux, well as a Linux lover that is stuck using windows, I say we start a 'why I use windows' discussion.
For me, I'm stuck on windows simply because the game development engine I use is only on windows and mac and doesn't seem to play nicrly when run on a VM, if the software was released on Linux I would swap over in a heart beat!5 -
I'm not one of those "windows sucks lol" guys, but I got used to having my dev environment set on Linux and due to some technical problems I'm setting things up on Windows for a while (dual boot).
Now... Jesus CHRIST how annoying this is. First, I use Laravel and the whole documentation assumes you're either using Mac or Linux. Second, everything has to be added to the god-damned PATH. Third, Windows sole purpose now seems to be updating the PC (and hogging my bandwidth in the process) so I had to waste time taming the beast called Windows Update.
Again, not the stupid old Linux vs Windows thing. I use both for different things, but had never set up a dev environment on Windows.11 -
I am trying to get my company to support Linux (Fedora) for engineers. Currently we support Windows and Mac. Does any of you have some good reasons for my case to make my argument for the business perspective?22
-
Been using linux for long time and now moving to mac. I must say I really miss windows blue screen 🤧4
-
I've been constantly switching between my Linux PC and Mac. What a pain in the ass. Why can't they have same keyboard layout?
Don't hate me for this but linux seems more productive to me. Mostly because of the ease of use and the shortcuts. I mean yeah I can create new shortcuts and stuff for my Mac but why should I bother? Any productivity tips for mac?7 -
Ok let's get our hate and love out for the 3 main OS types, tell us why you hate or love each of them.
Windows: I hate its lack of customisation, colours and wallpapers only go so far, and how fucking bloated it is and how little you can do about it.
Linux: it's open, free, and pretty much a sandbox for changes and is lightweight, plus if you don't like something about it, remove it, whats not to love!
MacOS: I love it because it just works and could also run on a potato (yeah I said it, fight me) and it's just a very good looking is with fluid animations and simplicity.
Now, don't be hating on people's opinions here so keep it civil :-P13 -
1. Windows is unreliable and crappy.(I have had a lot of bad experience with windows.)
2. Mac is good but doesn't have a lot of things to tinker with.(Used mac, it runs on specific hardware only, for rich people who don't know how to use computers or for chad programmers )
3. Linux is the best. (The real programmer shit that has it all.)
What do you think?40 -
Just started an android O development course on Udemy and decided to use my Arch installation (surprisingly Linux was the easiest one to set up) even though the course said Mac or windows only..
But holy fuck does android studio fly on Linux, it's so fast compared to being run on the same machine under windows...3 -
Im curious to know how people organise their workspace on windows.
I learned coding with linux.
I scored my first real job and they use mac. All good.
But at home i game and sometimes i feel like coding/gaming at the same time. But fark i hate the terminal.
How do you make it more ho my zsh/ linux terminal comfortable?6 -
Guysss!!
I have created a chrome extension to copy all tab links
And other window tab links as well. But when I was about to upload to chrome. It said, we don't give support to windows /mac / Linux . So the extension will be given support only for chrome os users.
I uploaded it.
So chrome users. Please take a look at it.
Extension name: JUST COPY.
please share the extension link with me!
Thanks in advance.4 -
Why Virtual Box is so laggy on Mac?
I gave it maximum resources and it's just sucks. On windows however Virtual Box is so fly...
Does anyone have any free virtualization solution for Mac (I'm trying to run Linux VMs)5 -
Everytime I introduce a person to Linux. He's reaction is almost like ... Hmm... That's cool and... Can you make it look more like windows/Mac?3

Why do devs prefer mac over windows? Like I've heard about Linux and its pros, but what does mac offer?19

Yo, so does anyone here have any experience about using Windows or mac printer drivers on GNU+Linux? So far my strategy has been to try to extract a ppd file from the Windows/mac drivers. It's an epilog fusion laser printer/engraver5

Was just at a client's building and they have desktops and running windows 7, 8 and 10, Linux and Mac.... Well that's not going to end in disaster1

Current Mac and Windows user here looking to get back into Linux. Any distro suggestions?

I just tried to download Photoshop CC. On Linux. Just to give it a try in Wine 3.0 and see if it works.
Adobe rejected my humble request with "Your operating system is not supported."
Ok.
I switched my user-agent to Windows and voila, it tried to give me a dmg installer.
A. Fucking. Mac. Installer.
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED DO TO WITH THAT ADOBE YOU STUPID CUNT!12 -
I hate, hate, hate sockets! All the mysterious way they can fail. The subtleties, different API's if you switch between Linux to Mac, etc.
If the communication between (supposedly) deterministic machines is already such a clusterfuck, how do we even get sentences across humans and act as if we understood?8 -
I’ve been arguing with my friend about this for some time. He loves mac and says a lot of people in SV use macs. But mac is a TERRIBLE os and it’s soooo annoying. Sure some of you might disagree, but is it true that most ppl in SV use macs? I was surprised to hear that they didn’t choose linux over mac.19
-
In your opinion, why buy a mac instead using Linux?
I wonder what are the advantages of Mac versus Linux8 -
My 2 cents on different OSes to use.
I think Linux is best for running servers and services and having long run times with little issues (when its Console and not GUI based.) But I have a lot of issues with using its GUI distributions like Ubuntu and it feels kind of unpolished in that area.
I prefer macOS for its GUI as it actually works and has far less issues than Windows GUI and is (IMO) better than Linux GUI's by far. But macOS just doesn't feel like it was designed super users and it can feel like its holding you back a bit. Also you have to use Mac hardware which are amazing machines, they are just overpriced.
I prefer Windows for its GUI and despite its problems, it is very well designed for super users and has very well designed remote desktop features and scalability (although it is a pain to maintain.) Windows works well for connected company systems.
In my opion:
Linux: Servers, databases (no GUI)
macOS: Designers, photo/video editing, IT/programmers and general use as a standalone (not part of a company system).
Windows: IT/programmers, super users, general use but better than macOS at working together in a company setup, but macOS is better at being a personal laptop or PC.
I personally use Linux for our email and web servers. Windows for our company computers (designers use Macs) and I have a Macbook as my own personal computer.25 -
I had never had a mac, but am pretty comfy with linux instances in the cloud and use them all the time.
Now I've had a mac for 2 days, why didn't I know that MacOS is basically Apple selling a 95% Ubuntu overlapping OS under their own brand.7 -
OK - so I have a new job which I am loving but I am needing to use a Mac book which is a little frustrating. Coming from Linux with I3wm I have stuff just so.
The biggest change I miss is that I can't hover the mouse over windows to give them focus. Also middle click pasting would be awesome. Does anyone have any advice / solutions to make me feel at home? -
What are the most common used technologies in workplaces around you?
Everywhere here I see an endless sea of .NET with ocassional streams of Java and some islands of php on IIS or Apache on the server, with ASP/JSP or Angular and jQuery on the client side.
Workstations are 100% Windows(10 or 7, with some legacy XP here and there).
Also most servers run Windows or some Unix version. Linux only for web servers and various system appliances.
Node.js, Ruby on rails, Django/Flask, React.js,Vue.js, Mac/Linux endpoints are only rarely used by fringe hipsters like me and my friends.3 -
Can anyone suggest me a Linux Distro or an Ubuntu Desktop Environment that:
- Has beautiful interface
- Is not slow
- Allows customization
I don't like Unity and Gnome because of the shit interface. I installed KDE Plasma (Kubuntu) but it's slow af and buggy.
I want something that has fast window management, Mac-like Dock, and just something that increases productivity.12 -
Decided to start learning Swift as I became a Mac user back when I was in college (and I'm a Linux fan so win win?).
I went to college for Web design and development but think I should definitely be putting a big focus into app and game development/programming.
I also have a backlog of programming languages I'd like to at least familiarize myself with...
So back to Swift...anyone use it regularly here for app and/or game development?4 -
To the people who so blindly hate apple: Name my other choices...
Winblows is a bloated system with no real package manager, i can't stop their endless updates, it gets viruses so easily, that you have to install an antivirus, and i hate their flat design, and linux is for haX0r kids who wanna look cool, it's just not practical for personal use.9 -

Option to add on profile, tabs or spaces.
Windows, Mac, or Linux
Same line { or next line
4 space tab or 8 space...
Also, I think it would be cool to introduce polls. Simple "Should I take a) a job with x or b) a job with y" and people could click a or b in addition to comments.1 -
Hey Linux users!
I have successfully convinced a friend to change from MacOS to a Linux based system (because she needs new hardware).
Now I am asking myself which distribution would be most qualified for her. She is a relatively old lady and only knows Mac (no Windows or Linux knowledge), so it should be easier for her if the new system would look similar to the Mac environment she knows. (Using console is no problem.)
Another point is compatibility: She needs some (commercial) software (like GitKraken and design stuff), so it would be cool if the Linux versions of them would work on the distro (for one or two programmes Wine is needed).
After my own reasearch I came up with Elementary OS or Gmac.
Because I have no experience with Mac I want to ask you: Has anyone here some experiences with these two systems and/or with a change from Mac to Linux and could recommand a distribution or desktop environment?
Thank you!10 -
Hello Devranters who use Linux. If Linux on PC could be a better choice over Mac, could you share some whys?12

Anyone had any luck installing Linux as the boot OS on a Macbook?
I have an old Macbook Pro with a dead battery that I'd like to tinker with, and while it looks possible from what I've found online, I'm curious if anyone here's had any luck.4 -
EVERY GODDAMN TIME I use FREAKING Windows in my computer, I have to reconfigure FUCKING EVERYTHING. But seriously, every goddamn time it fucks up with the other OS'. Mac and Linux aren't acting up, you little shit.3

Out of the Operating Systems, I think Windows has the best file moving system.
Yes, you're unable to transfer files if they're currently in use, but you can start new file moving jobs in the middle of a current file moving process, and as of Windows 7, files that are unable to be moved for whatever reason don't cancel out the entire move.
Linux is next best because files will move regardless of if they're in use or not, and a file that is unable to be moved for whatever reason also won't cancel the entire move. However, if a new file move process is started, it will pause until the current move job is completed, which is a pain if moving a lot of large files.
Mac is the worst. One failed move results in cancelling the entire process. If a file will be duplicated or is unable to be moved, if you cancel that specific move, you have to start it all over again. No way to cancel or skip, just start it all over.4 -
To create a native CLI application for Linux, windows and Mac using C or just use C# and tell people to use mono... These are the real questions that I can't tell if I'm too lazy to ask myself properly...9
-
While working on our matlab project, my laptop just suddenly stop responding. Even the task manager isn't responding! Everything is fucked up and the file hasn't been saved yet. Then a friend of mine started saying that Mac is better than windows and im like:
"Bitch pls linux is the best"
I won't spend a lot of money to buy a macbook. I'd rather spend money buying a better laptop with great specs and dualboot Linux alongside Windows.3 -
So... I got this “Bitshift Variations in C Minor” code golf to work on a Mac if anyone is interested: http://txti.es/bitshiftvariationsin...
Here is the original, which probably works on Linux: http://txti.es/bitshiftvariationsin... -
After a few days of Mac. I seem to understand the pain of using a Mac. Sometimes doing a simple thing in Linux, it requires 2x efforts to do so in Mac. It is very user friendly, but it needs more developer friendly. It is very different.13

Fuck those who hate on Mac os and say that they aren't customizable and cost money for everything. Like some days ago I saw this post about how Mac users need money for like getting simple shit done. Tbh most of the ppl haven't even used Mac for dev stuff. And after using Linux I would say MAC IS AS GOOD AS LINUX. (if u use Mac ports or brew as a package manager) and u can even run Linux apps in there without almost any hassle.9

Any ideas how to bypass a Linux based paywall? I’m on a cruise and the internet access is ridiculously expensive... The OS boots straight into a session, and opens the login app maximised. Originally I tried unplugging it, cloning its MAC, etc, but that looked quite suspicious 😂 (the BIOS is password protected)
Obviously for research purposes 😇5 -
If I wanted to make a program that was compatible with windows Linux and Mac, using c# what would be the best options?26

I'm assigned with doing Guides for customers that need connections through Microsoft Remote Desktop.
I made one on a Windows laptop, fine, but they also need guides for Mac OsX and iOS. Dat emacs-fingertorture screenshot buttoncombo.. and once I was done with that I needed a quick way to put 20 odd screenshots on my working computer ( Linux ) and edit them to have a unified design and to also share it with my coworker, so I put them up on Google drive. It started acting up right away with compressing for download in Linux.. then on the Windows computer......... and once I had the zips Windows internal unzipped couldn't unzip them, neither could 7zip................. neither could Linux Unzip -e ................ I ended up just downloading them one by one on both computers, I almost got a nosebleed from that.. -
Virtualbox 6 sucks!
So i'm on a mac and i need some linux goodness on the quick. But the screen resolution stays at 800x600px! On my high dpi screen it's so tiny i need a magnifying glass to do anything on the guest os. And i can't change the resolution nor scale it up for the life of it. Never had that before. Really frustrating!!! 😤5 -
Tested the windows linux subsystem. Thought windows did something good by implementing a complete Linux bash. Then I recognized that they just piped it into the win kernel. Lol they broke it again XD
Next steps are removing windows, burn that m2 ssd in some gasoline, throw the ashes in a deep hole next to my old bootcamp 40GB HDD (Mac OS X) and finally setting up a new fresh and clean system which won't get in touch with any Windows forever.

What's your favorite terminal emulator?
On Linux I prefer xterm, because of its bottomless config options all through a really nice xrdb -merge command.
On a Mac I prefer iterm2, again for its galaxy of config options and features.
On Windows, I just use putty or mobaxterm to ssh to a real operating system. :)
How about you?7 -
beware: yt short link.
tl:dr is that compiling and packing shit for windows & linux is usually straightforward. For mac it is a pain in the ass and contributed less than 1% percent to sales.
And the thing is, i absolutely resonate with that, because i had to go through that hell before at some point in life.
Also on another note: i recently got this guy recommended by a friend, and feel like that they have interesting topics they talk about!

Yo anyone recommend a software KVM switch between mac and linux??? The switcheroo is getting annooyinng.....2

I'm running unintuitive server on a Mac mini for home Dev type stuff and it's running warm but quick. Has two virtual containers innit as well - admittedly I'm not banging it hard but seems fine.
Would be interested in other views is Linux server as on Linode Ubuntu seems to be standard1 -

Going to install a Linux distro on my Mac for general dev antics (NodeJS & Java)...
But which one?12 -
Hey guys, why yould you use linux over Mac OS X since they are both unix based ? Are there things Linux can do and OS X can’t ? Thx !9

Writing a x-platform cli tool in Go designed to be an infinite REPL until EOF if no arguments are passed. Code works great on Linux and Mac as-is but not on Windows. On Windows it only works at all if args are passed.
WHY.
And people wonder why I don't like Windows. It's a shame my userbase has so many tech-saavy Windows users. If not for them I'd cut that git branch off the repo in a heartbeat. -
I use Windows for work and I’ve always used Linux for my home set up. Got a Mac a few months ago…..yeah I see it now….15

Oracle 11g DB or whatever version it was!! You need a fucking windows machine to install it, doesnt install on Linux or Mac!! I am a MySQL/Postgres guy, working on it was a nightmare, permission issues, and you need the oracle instant client on your system to communicate with windows, which works after a zillion errors!!

Well atm i use a cheap mechanic keyboard which i got since my last one died. I can afford a new one and looking for options. I prefer tenkeyless keyboards. What do you use? Mechanic? Slim? Anyone uses mac keyboard with linux? Any suggestions would be very helpful.5 -
What will you recommend to me ( for my IT studies where I code in C and Ada ) between an ultrabook with a VM Linux to use the terminal (compile/use graphics libraries) and a Macbook Pro?
(I'd like to keep Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and other app only available on windows and mac)4 -
I really want to use mock design tools in order to better design my UI layouts, but my main working environment is Linux, and almost all design and prototyping tools I found until now have only Windows or Mac OS ports.1

Can you please help me come up with a company name. The company would make PC/Mac/Linux games and android games. I've been trying to come up with a good name for a few months and they are either bad or already used somewhere.11

I’ve mainly switched to Linux/Mac. So I don’t know if this Windows Dev Kit thing is exciting to anyone. Is it?

My PC kept booting into linux cause i installed two OS's on my HDD. Long story short, had to remove the Linux (it was Kali) and i didnt know how. And so started the longest few hours of my life.
I deleted the linux partition feeling like some genius that could speak to computers. To my suprise the computer didnt speak back, i restarted it and the GRUB bootloader had this sheepish grin on its face like as if it was saying, "Not sure who's been speaking to you all this time, but i bet you can hear me now, hehehe". I went down the rabbit hole that we all know and love called the google search bar.
My computer could no longer boot into windows, and i started to question my very existence on this earth. Hours of using our modern day saviour, google of alphabet inc, i came to an eventual conclusion. Grabbed a 4GB flash, made it into a bootable device and said good riddance to bad rubbish.5 -
Guys, I'm a big fan of Linux OS, and also a big fan of Visual Studio (+ Code).
If this is not against rules, could you (the whole Linux Comunity) help and wote up on this link
https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/...
It a "request" that MS releases Linux version of Visual Studio (I know that there is MonoDevelop already) who is at least close to MS VS (maybee missing some functionalities, just like VS Mac)8 -
Hey guys!
Well, two weeks ago I was hired as backend developer. I am the only one with macbook. The company use docker for development... On Linux, there is no problem. Docker is up in like 5 sec. But on my mac, it takes like two minutes and refresh like 20 sec. Our front end with macs has same problem. Have anyone expirience with docker and mac? ❤
Thanks a lot!4 -
So I know that I'll inevitably need to use macOS for some project or another in college but don't want to pay for a Mac (I already have a Windows machine and will be installing some currently undecided upon Linux distro onto an external hard drive). Would it be worth it to try to make a macOS Hackintosh external hard drive just for the couple projects I'll need it for?5

If there is WIne for windows emulation why isn't there any Line and Mace for emulating linux and mac os?3

The first rant that I'm going to do here is by writing a reminder note on posting a comment regarding Snap's inability to properly give response to the users on a solution post in Medium.
Here is the reminder:
Everything sucks: Windows, Linux, Mac, Ubuntu, Wine, Snap, Lutris every fucking program they are always fucked up, no fucking program is near to perfection. Let alone leave that fucking Snap response.6 -
Guys can you help me?
I want to by laptop instead of pc, but i dunno if I should go with asus zenbook ux310ux with i7 and 16GB of ram and linux or used macbook with probably i7 and 8GB of ram.
I can't make up my mind whether to choose linux or mac os. I like linux but i have a feeling that someday I will need to do something, and program for that will be windows/mac os only.
PS. Arch linux with i3wm4 -
I often have to use files on Linux, Mac OS and Windows. I've had multiple issues trying to swap files across the platforms. Is there a solution I can use to replace USB storage? A dedicated server or something?2

What OS does everyone use, and what kind of dev do you use it for?
I'm using Linux Mint and I do back end and dev ops.32 -
The main difference between macOS and windows/linux is that it has Helvetica, the best typeface to ever exist, built in. When an email arrives, you know it's your fellow Mac user who sent it, so you know they at least take a shower every day, and you don't have to explain things like they're five.
You can use Helvetica for everything. Designers love it. Guess what — all of them have Macs, so things they design look best on your Mac as well. They don't test on windows or any linux.
Linux has the important mission of overthrowing windows as the main desktop OS for normies, and that's a good thing. Valve and Steam OS is a massive step forward. But, if you value your time and want to be surrounded with beautiful things, nothing beats macOS.22 -
Hmm, thinking of getting a surface book and dual booting Linux on it for my laptop and then a Mac mini for iOS development for uni, what do you guys think?7

A close button for a filter menu, according to UX, users could not figure out how to close it... We guessed those sames users also do not use windows, linux or mac os... WTF
