I'm not one of those "windows sucks lol" guys, but I got used to having my dev environment set on Linux and due to some technical problems I'm setting things up on Windows for a while (dual boot).

Now... Jesus CHRIST how annoying this is. First, I use Laravel and the whole documentation assumes you're either using Mac or Linux. Second, everything has to be added to the god-damned PATH. Third, Windows sole purpose now seems to be updating the PC (and hogging my bandwidth in the process) so I had to waste time taming the beast called Windows Update.

Again, not the stupid old Linux vs Windows thing. I use both for different things, but had never set up a dev environment on Windows.

Just FYI you can turn off the auto updates, even in Windows 10.

    & Welcome to devrant!

@mohammed hey thanks! Also, Windows will let me pause the updates for up to 35 days, but that's no good since it'll only have even more stuff to download after that. I opted to limit the bandwidth in BITS and it worked :)

@Kirk you can disable the windows update service from windows services.

@mohammed it was my second thought after looking for something in the settings (not an option anymore). But it turns out the OS will simply reset the services to manual-running, no matter what ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

@Kirk If you can get your hands on an LTSB (or whatever the new name is), you can completely block the update (Settings, services, GPO, etc.)

    Welcome!

PS: Have you tried using the "Linux" part of W10? Might help you with some of your issues

@Jilano now I'm curious, what do you mean by the Linux side of Windows?
  • 2
@Kirk Sorry, I forgot how it was called when I wrote my previous comment: the "Windows subsystem for Linux"

    Source: https://howtogeek.com/249966/...

Since you know your way around Linux/Unix, it could help you I guess

@Jilano that's what I was referring to too.

@Jilano using the Linux shell on Windows, that's... amazing! I'm testing it today. I might have heard about this but I'm not sure. Anyway, can't wait to go back home and try it.

    (don't worry cmd, I haven't forsaken you)

@mohammed only in pro edition, which is like a lot more $ than home edition! like wtf: WHY DO YOU HAVE TO FREAKING PAY MORE TO HAVE CONTROL OF YOUR SYSTEM, WHAT IS THAT KIND OF SHIT! and also, M$ product enforcing is f$ shit, I’m no longer offering IT support to my family members who use Windows

@Kirk "If the mighty Linux Shell keeps its promises, you shall soon be forgotten, CMD!"

Tell us how it goes and try not to break anything!
