we got a new coworker who had no experience in coding. I was planning to leave the company (mainly because my other coworokers were jerks) but no one wanted to teach him so i started teaching the new guy. This was 4 months ago and He is the reason im still here and i enjoy my work again! :)15
-
If it wasn't for coding I wouldn't have met my boyfriend. 😊
We started working at the same place and position with 2 weeks apart, and quite quickly we turned into best coding buddies which eventually turned into more!
2,5 yrs later we no longer work together in the same company, but we do live together and code together on side projects at home ☺️8 -
Trying to teach coding to a kid:
Kid: Can you teach me XCode?
Me: No but I can teach you Swift or Objective-C
Kid: But I want to learn to code in XCode
Me: Yes you will code in XCode but I will teach you swift
Kid: My dad said that you actually know how to code but apparently not.12 -
Account guy saw me coding...
account guy: so you type a lot.. how can you remember so much??
me: ??
account guy: I mean there is NO LOGIC in what you do, so you must read these things and type them here... you need to remember a lot.. right??
me: ohh... that... well.. I have very good memory :)
p.s. last line was sarcasm12 -
Signed up for an Android course at my uni and expected to have some fun with Android Studio and modern app development technologies...
Turns out that we're working with Blockly (no coding). We will write our exam with Blockly. The course is mandatory and I cannot opt out.
I've been a dev since 7 years and I am dead inside already.13 -
PHP 🐘 is so damn easy to learn, run straighforward in all OSs, that anyone can start coding in no time. Therefore, the amount of crap code around, made by unskilled devs, is just *unbelievable*. 💩18
-
*starts coding in c#*
Me: hmm this bit of functionality requires some good ol inheritence
*has flashback to uni lecture on c++ *
Lecturer: And so you can use inheritence with friends for xyz, you know what they say friends can touch eachothers privates
*end of flashback*
Me: Guh! No, not the puns ! Guh!5 -
Guy from work: "I have a messy coding style ¯\_(ツ)_/¯".
No, you have a bad coding style. Your repetitive uncommented spaghetti code isn't an artistic expression of your quick imaginative mind jumping from thought to thought. It's a horrible mess that shows me that either you can't do any better or you don't care.8 -
HR: How many years you've been developing on Xamarin ?
Me: Three years, with many side projects
HR: So, you're familiar with C#?
Me: No, I've been coding in "hieroglyphs".9 -
This guy next to me in the train is coding C#... but his codestyle looks like... no words... I am now reading Clean Code!
I hope he will notice!😂8 -
During teacher office hours a few years back: if you have questions on your homework, maybe it's too hard and you should switch majors to something easier, many girls do, so there's no shame in it.
I had asked for verification that my standard deviation logic was correct before spending the time coding it and then figuring out what was wrong.
Ps- he's no longer employed by the school for other sexist reasons.28 -
No matter how much we complain about our programming language, our bosses, our co-workers, our teams, or anything else....
We'll never trade our Profession (coding) for any other job in the World.
That's How We Roll.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯3 -
Since most of the pics here are either joke/memes or battlestations or laptop on a nice desk..... I give you my humble coding corner on my bed from a 3rd world country. Still student so....gotta improvise. No, desk is too far away for power socket.7
-
Friend: So what's the plan for Christmas
Me: Nothing much just coding
Friend: No apart from work
Me: Yeah coding
Friend: That means, you not getting drunk or laid this Christmas
Me: No, because I can't C Sharp when coding
Friend: Fuck developers2 -
Best part of being a dev :
You get to live the stereotype. "She doesn't talk much, she is always on her laptop - coding, always has headphones on. Too much of a geek. Let's not invite her to a party. "
No awkward "Uh , I cant come. " Yay! B-)2 -
Coding nightmare -> the guy who wrote this application I guess wanted job security? At the VERY least to be a pain in the ass to anyone else who touches his code....WHO NAMES THEIR VARIABLES PEOPLE NAMES?!?!? do I know what "Beth" or "Sarah" stand for? ummmm....no 😢8
-
* me listening to something while coding
* something goes wrong, trying to fix it..
Takes time and no solution.
- ok this is serious *put headphones down*4 -
I started coding in 1994 making .BAT menus for my DOS games. Used HELP.EXE to find commands I could use. Then I figured out how to modify and run GORILLA.BAS (using Q-Basic). Man, when I realized that all BASIC commands were in the OS documentation as well, that was the Red Pill! Just started to copy commands and blocks from the Gorillas game into a new program, read the doc, modify, run and learn. Btw, the first BASIC command I played with was "PLAY" (for music).
At that time I was 10 and there was no Stackoverflow, no Youtube, no tutorials, no Google... no easy path to follow down the rabbit hole.

1. No more coding on paper! Why can some already write essays on laptops but programmers are stuck with "analog"?
2. No vendor lock-ins! Teach free, cross-platform development, not VB.NET.
3. No more professors stuck in the eighties! If all you know is 6800 assembly, GTFO. I heard NASA was hiring...
4. Enforce code style consistency, proper documentation and even VCS for larger projects
5. Algorithms -> scripting -> programming. Don't quickly explain the basics, then throw students straight into Java.10 -
So my wife started learning coding and web development. I am quite impressed how fast someone can learn it (she started from scratch, with No knowledge before)13

Coding Guide:
wanna start coding?
it's very simple, just follow this steps!
1. prepare a notebook and pen.
2. choose a programming language you would like to learn.
3. find a nice site for study it, SoloLearn is a very good site, you can ask me in the comments for more.
4. start copying every code block and summary to the notebook.
5. don't worry about not understanding it yet.
6. finish copying at last 5 subjects.
7. start the course again, and follow the notebook.
8. do it few times, your mind will remember it.
now the hard part!
good job, you remember the basic, but don't know how to use it? well 1 more guide for it.
1. prepare a notebook and pen.
2. now, it's your time to teaching it!
3. try to explain the code in your words or language.
4. after few times your mind will remember all the necessary things about coding.
5. start to make little apps or even games.
enjoy =D
of course you need to coding every day for 1 hour+-3 -
Recruiters in germany try to pick your interest with coding “challenges”. I like the idea but this is actually no challenge at all! 😃20
-
The whole family is going out of country tomorrow. You know what that means?
It means 24 hours coding and no one to disturb 😎1 -
I love group projects.
There is no greater feeling than, after you set up the repository with the first code files, your team mate changes the indentation and commenting style in every file to his own style without even discussing the general coding style rules in the group first.
Fucking awesome start.
Go eat a sack of unwashed hobo balls you filthy cunt.3 -
You are a consultant and wrote some easy scripts by copying code snippets together?
Good for you!
It makes your job easier?
Good for you!
You didn't care too much about UI because you only needed the job to be done?
That's fine!
BUT DON'T YOU DARE SELL THIS SHIT TO A CUSTOMER AND CALL YOURSELF A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER!
YOU ARE NO DEVELOPER!
YOU DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOW TO BUILD A RELIABLE SOFTWARE.
no one needs a solid database structure?
Object oriented programming is "just another hype"?
No one cares for the coding?
FUCK YOU, AND YOUR ATTITUDE!7 -
I've been coding for the last 19 Hours (not including break), and now I am starting to get hand seizure, my finger just start cramming for no reason.
i need a doctor14 -
That moment you realise why you enjoy the dev life again.
It's been a long time since I've had a solid day of coding, just coding..., no meetings, no wild requests, no crazy issues, no data fixing because someone can't type a number correctly, just me, myself and that keyboard going on a field trip of quality coding time again.
Ah, it's a good day to end the week on!rant holy shit no meetings no problems lack of bau devlife those feels straight code quality code time back to the old days3 -
Ever since I started a hobby project with a commitment to make atleast one commit to it everyday, no matter what and no matter how small, coding has become a truly fun past time. And 3 months in, my project is beautifully taking shape1
-
Hi guys
I'm just starting to learn c++ (with no coding background) and being 22, i feel like it's too late.
Wish me luck.22 -
When the frontend dev argues that Pestashop is a "good product" because "it just works" and "you can click everything up, no coding needed"
Any good tips on how to hide or disolve a body?9 -
How can those WordPress-Theme-Creator-Bitches write bullshit like "no coding skills required". What the fuck do you say?
Why don't you jump into the Pacific Ocean (no swimming skills required), idiot.3 -
Is it just me or does this shirt make no sense? If your coffee was empty, then it would return true and you would keep coding. If it was not empty you would fill it.
Plus it's not a while loop, so unless this is some sort of recursion you wouldn't keep going....4 -
HTML Previewer: "Yeah it looks fine"
Chrome: "no your HTML fucking sucks, go back to coding school"
WYSIWYG in a nutshell1 -
All those developers complaining about how at their new job there is no source control process, no ci, no CD, no code reviews, no coding standards, no effective project management, next time maybe try asking some questions during the interview stage 🤔
Remember you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you.6 -
Started my internship in web development so far everything is good but the only problem is website is on developed on WIX. No coding necessary 😣😣2
-
PO: "I'll email you the details."
Me: Sure, I'll start with what I have right now.
I start coding, 7 hours later I got something working, not sure if it's what he wants.
Still no email.
I might have a followup rant tomorrow when he tells me it's not what he wanted at all.3 -
My biggest regret: Going to talk to my boss that I want more responsibilities. Now I am an underpaid boss of 7 people, and the sadest part is, that I have no time for coding anymore 😠4
-
Have u built your own robo who makes coffee for u while you are coding?
0- yes! // u r cooooool!!!
1- no. // me 2 😸☕
[If you answered yes, then comment how did you ]7 -
I have that one friend, every time he ask what I am doing and I tell him I am coding, he tells me that he wants to programme too but has no idea how to start.
I always tell him to Duck duck go start programming python/java but he never does...
(I think I somehow created an infinite loop)16 -
Three years ago, tried to learn some JavaScript, failed miserably. Two years ago, managed to learn some Java through Udacity courses. Last year I started learning native Android development and got my first coding summer job. Now I'm back to learning JavaScript through Freecodecamp and that bitch ain't got shit on me no more!3
-
I applied for Software Devloper position but was called in for interview for Systems Analyst (IT). Nothing to do with coding. When I mentioned that I applied for Software Developer role, I was told that there is no vacancy for that role then why the fuck did you advertised and fuck the fuck did I apply.
Fuck5 -
"No We Will Not Code for Free"
(Parody of the "Cheers" theme)
We're underpaid, clients' scope today takes everything we got.
You turn to us with all your troubles cause "companies charge a lot."
You want our work but you won't pay.
No we will not code for free.
You are not exempt from our fee.
If you want a free site, build it yourself. We're not your coding slaves.
We won't build your crap no matter how much you plea.
"Paying us back" don't mean a thing, money talks, bullshit walks.
If you want a cheap site then go to Geocities.2 -
> starts coding at a young age
> makes it my whole personality
> goes through a rough year of quarantine, graduates high school, changes changes changes
* no. coding for a super extended period of time*
now I'm slowly trying to get back into it consistently. miss you besties lol hope yall are doing ok I'm back and I'm better and also older. I think the last time I was consistently on here I was 17 lmao
I work at another bank now. I finished my first year of engineering at my uni. Ontario is slowly opening up. I'm doing better :)3 -
The worst part of hackathons are schedules which leaves no time for actual coding!
I was once at 2 day event. Day 1 contained an intro lecture, 'getting to know your team' exercise, idea generation phase, idea feedback from industry people, mandatory coffee breaks, and a little bit of coding at the end.
Day 2 consisted of 'adding thet final touches to your hack', a random lecture from the company hosting the event, info from the judges on how to pitch, a trial run of the pitch and then the final pitches...
I barely think we got to code for 3 hours.4 -
My current project is a fucking nightmare.
It started in 2007, using a solution developed by an Indian company due to outsourcing (aka low-quality code).
It's running on Java 7 on the back-end and its front-end side is pure Javascript files. There are thousands of little .js files everywhere, no documentation, no comments, differents coding styles, outdated API that were already outdated at the time, mixed oop and procedural.
Not even when I started coding, I wrote something so horrible.
Yo, it's a clusterfuck and I just wanna get drunk.5 -
Just read an article that really grinds my gears. Its about coding in other languages. Not programming languages, but literally other languages.
Btw I learned to code in Spanish and I'm not against coding in programming languages using variable names in other languages.
That's fine.
What pissed me off was that the author claimed that we should be able to code Fucking JavaScript in SWAHILI or other languages available. What kind of PC bullshit is that!
Coding is barely fucking readable and now we have to make standards for Multilanguage support. Just learn the less than 60 reserved words you lazy fuck and code with them! I leaned to code with shitty tutorials in Spanish and theres no 1000x resources out there and this author claims you can't code unless you know english.
Granted. It's easier but wtf not just learn it. When I coded in Java in Spanish, I didn't know wtf a Class was or ags meant. So what. I memorized that shit. How? By coding!
Why bring this PC shit to programming? The author thinks there are few programmers bc we don't support fucking SWAHILI in JavaScript. Fuck no!
Now if you want to support this initiative. Think of this,
...legacy code
...in 32+ languages.
Have fun debugging this thing.14 -
*Me after writing a piece of code and praying to god that there are no errors.*
My pc: 1 error(s) found.
Me : "I hate coding. I hate coding. I hate coding."
*Tries everything to solve that problem.*
My pc: No errors found.
Me: "I love coding.Yay xD"2 -
If you are completely new to coding, no problem at all! All of the concepts are fully explained throughout the exploration. Just keep in mind that it might be tough and frustrating and times. But don't give up! Coding isn't always easy, but it sure is fun when you get it right.
-
as every one showed their coding buddy, i had no chice but to reveal mine.
but dont be racist guys and dont judge him by his appearance, hes a little shy7 -
My first time working with Java and SQL queries(SQL with little/no knowledge): created separate db for each entities and hoped it to work together after the coding was finished.
what a noob! -
I still nuke Ctrl + S so often while coding/editing a document that I sometimes think i'm just borderline maniac. This is one of those paranoid habits that has stuck with me since my early coding days, despite a majority of editors having auto save enabled. What other weird/awkward habits do you have that you cannot get rid of no matter what?10
-
Worst. 2 am on campus, js file for a web app project. It didn't work, no exceptions thrown, no errors. I call the assistant teacher. He calls the teacher. Teacher calls the head of department. Four of us staring at the screen for an hour, trying different browsers, environments etc
3 am, switch cases had semicolons rather than colons. Sleepy coding is the worst.7 -
So there I was productivity coding away in my office since early in the morning it was about noon when my coworkers kept saying. " Hey have you seen how nice it is outside." "Wow it's really nice out there" and " hey you should really go outside and get some fresh air".
So I'm all ok, cool it's lunchtime I'll check it out. So I go outside and I'm out there for 30 seconds when a bee lands on my face and stings me just under my eye.
Ouch! WTF! No No No it is not nice outside at all. Infact it is painful outside.
so now the rest of my day is ruined all I can feel is my face throbbing and I can't think about anything anymore but my face in pain. Amazing how one little insect can ruin days of coding.
Don't listen to the muggles stay inside.4 -
3 Years into coding and I still have no fucking clue on what 99% of the lines in a sample code means. And I'm already 18 Years Old... Beginning to think this line of work isn't for me T_T12
-
I used vs code for a solid 3 years, but my friend has been using notepad. No color coding. No dark theme. No auto commenting. No suggestions. Just plain black text in a white box.
Like a psychopath.5 -
Every University should make it a requirement that CS and Info technology juniors and seniors spend time on devRant. It is an education in real world coding and business challenges. No surprises. Easier transition to being a pro.
Wish it were available when I was starting.2 -
After alot of 24, no sleep, and lots if coding I went full Jack Bauer on my code. Shouting, "where's the bug!? Where is the bug!?"3
-
> be me
> started using greentext on devrant a while ago
> semi successful rants
> people start using greentext too
> lookMomIDidIt.avi
> be happy
> no one knows I started it
> maybe it wasn't even me
> sit in shower
> try not to cry
> cry a lot
Shit. That's not a rant about coding
> fuck microsoft1 -

So family doesn't really know coding. Just me and my little sister. But then my dad suddenly made jokes with loops and stuff. I have no idea where he learned it. They're not actually accurate but I really love it when he does that.2 -
It was at the beginning of my IT apprenticeship, I had no idea about coding in C and our teacher told us to write a "hello world" in C.
.. I wrote:
10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD"
20 GOTO 101 -
I finally perfected a script that helps me fix my procrastination! It hooks into DNS's log and spies on my and blocks me if i get too addicted!
No joke I spent on it likely cumulatively over 48 hours of pure coding time but it was worth it.
If anyone would like to take a look or criticize my coding, here it is: https://github.com/meowxiik/...8 -
I always love it when a manager who has no coding background tells me to "just do this" without ever letting me do any research. Just because you see it in you favorite app does not mean that feature is trivial.1
-
Speaking of annoying stuff in coding. What the fuck is it with the localized error messages?
No. Fuck you. No. Give me the English version so I can google it and find answers from the huge English speaking community instead of the tiny community of my language.6 -
It's official, the "front end dev" doesn't know how to code.
Why.
And it's not a "Well I don't know JS because I use React." scenario, no. He has almost no idea of coding.
What was he thinking trying to build the front end of a very complex app with just HTML, CSS and stupid copied and pasted snippets?5 -
I don't like interview coding challenges. At the same time, given the skill level of some developers I've worked with who work for a contracting firm and presumably didn't get a coding test in their intervies...I understand the necessity. Some people are so bad at coding that even the simplest of coding tests can show how bad they are.
I think my favorite is being given a simple task to write code for. And that's it. No "use this specific language feature to do this specific thing". Just a task and that's it.
I got a really simple coding test once. I had to reverse a string. I could choose any language. Presumably they wanted to see loops or something, but I just used Python and did this: string[::-1]
I got the job.3 -
The best language to learn.
well actually there's no "best" language, only a good programmer.
all languages can be useful, coding for games, coding for apps, for hacking.
don't choose language because people says it's the best language.
choose 4 languages you find them easy to understand, do basic coding in this 4 languages.
after this, compare it and take the one that was most fun to write.
of course language like Python is more easy for non programmer to study.
but some people find C++ more fun and easy to understand from the beginning.
enjoy and if you have a question, comment it.6 -
After some hardcore coding days I notice: Wait a minute.. I had no coffee. How was that fucking possible? I mean the tests ran green. The client was happy and..
.. and then I woke up. -
!rant
After 4 weeks of no coding i start slowly missing it. especially when i'm reading dev rant 😁
Got some time for myself to upgrading elzdev 2.9 to elzdev 3.0
I can highly recommend you to do something good for yourself and spend some time alone with no work.
I chose Barcelona for one month 😍
And now i can't wait to start work again at the begining of november 😄4 -
When you spend 10x time coding just because you can't, just can't resist writing good code, even when you no it's gng to make no difference whatsoever🙁
Why brain, oh why?4 -
Why do clients always try to use our lingo? They sound stupid. I read a post yesterday that said "no coding necessary. Just HTML and CSS" . Um. What? I also have a client that always tells me "I just need you to make some updates to the CSS with programming" . 😐🔫2
-
I was interviewing for a new position that would be primarily Android development with a chance that I would help out on iOS when necessary. When I got their coding challenge, it had to be done for iOS in Swift. Made no sense, but now I can say I finally wrote a project in Swift.
-
Don't focus too much on learning one specific language. After some coding getting to know a new one is going to be no problem. Focus more on paradigms and maintainable code.
Oh, and don't forget, comments are sometimes way more useful than the actual code. -
After long hours of intensive coding and no caffeine, goto bed because u realise it's 2AM. Wake up next day, look back at the came code, "what the hell was I tryin to do!"3
-
Parts of the code I am working on date back to the early nineties, written in ancient C++ with lots of special cases for ancient compilers by people with 0-2 years of coding experience.
My favourite coding moment is every time when after refactoring a part of the code, it has about 1000 lines less (no exaggeration), is more reliable, AND can do a lot more than before.6 -
1. IDE connected to your brain that does the coding according to your thoughts.
2. Compiling and deployment for your applications take little to no time.
3. Not having to wipe your ass 50 times to make sure it's all clean.3 -
Legitimate question, no argument intended: why do you use mac? What advantages does it have over the other operating systems in terms of coding?8
-
Finally on vacation.
As an American the first surprise I got in Berlin is that Burger King serves beer. Never seen that ever back home. (Okay I was in Denmark on a plane but it still was cool darn it)
I've been thinking for the year about working here, but now that I showed up the idea is scaring me a bit. Go figure. 😭
I want to see more of Germany beyond Berlin, what do our German natives like here?9 -
Written coding test, first question :
Form the minimum spanning tree of the given graph using Kruskals algorithm.
Plot twist : No weights given. Assume unweighted graph4 -
Disadvantages of coding after midnight... Was modifying a makefile for an assignment when suddenly:
$ make clean
> rm -f com/package1/*.class
> rm -f com/package2/*.java
wait..
WAIT NO
😢7 -
I'm really into coding now for half a year. I really love that kinda flow when there pop up no errors and you work yourself through the code writing using trial and error. It's really addicting and the perfect evening.
But here comes my question: There are sometimes unsolvable errors for me (still not figuring out how to use firebase properly 😞). Is this stuff going to be fewer as I advance in coding, or am I just terrible at googling? To other beginners: Do you have often errors to that feel unsolvable for you?1 -
Coding along, frustrated already, need to restart computer to test something.
Of course im running on Windows and then I realize I have no restart opinion, the only one that exists is "update and restart"
*sigh*6 -
i love to actually understand how the code works! like you're writing some text and surprise - it does magic? no. it goes deeper than that. and when you understand those concepts, coding becomes more serious/fun and interesting1
-
When you work for a company where the guy next to you leans back and falls of his chair smashing into a fan all over the shop you look for people to laugh and take the piss call him a dick and no one else bats a eyelid and just keeps coding, you know you life is over in this job!!!3
-
$a = 1;
$b = 2;
echo ($a < $b) ? ($a > $b) ? 'This is totally fine' : ($a < $b) ? 'This is not ok!' : 'Perfect' : 'No problem here';
Why do people do this?!
(And I mean nested ternary ifs, not coding in PHP :P)16 -
Wellp lately so much shit happened with parents and school that id like to (atleast see my options for) get(ting) a job in order to be independent.
What could work, knowing im a backender, coding in cpp, but open for other langs ?
I have no degree, but my github repos lol8 -
What?
I don't get it?
That doesn't make any scene....
goto line 5980
😎 coding like a boss....
goto line 8764
🤡 I have no idea what I'm doing.... -
I made a js script using google and pieces of an already made script without knowing a bit of js.
Amazing how all programming languages are so similar.1 -
I just read this great line in the Google SRE book which I have experienced myself:
"Some of the most satisfying coding I’ve ever done was deleting thousands of lines of code at a time when it was no longer useful."3 -
It's like a stab into your fucken heart when your coding competition entry gets rated "you did everything perfect! :) But it's not enough for the top 3. :(" with multiple minus points across different requirements bUT NO GOSH DARN EXPLANATION WHAT I DID WRONG. I PARTICIPATED TO TEST MYSELF AND LEARN SOMETHING, NOT GET PUNCHED IN THE FUCKEN FACE FOR NO REASON FFS MAN.
-
I was doing code reviews for some of the new Devs recently joined... One guy wrote his entire life history in the check in description... Like Why he took this approach, why interfaces are necessary in coding, when did he lost his virginity (I doubt he ever did), what's his pet name? - sadly no information related to his online banking... Shame really...
-
That moment when u r finished with learning a new language but suddenly realize that u have forgotten how to use the previously learnt language .... Just wonder if it was possible to have just 1 coding language with all the pros and no cons ...4
-
Was in a meeting with the execs and the boss singles me out and asks me where is this functionality at. I told him the dev working on it will have it ready today. He goes no no no this needs to happen now. I am speechless have no idea how to tell him this employees are working very hard and is doing the very best with the limited time we had. I personally was up at midnight coding to deliver on time. That was the start of my bad day ... crap just pilled on :/1

Worst Hackathon Experience ever!
Had been to SAP for a hackathon last year. Built a complete solution for our challenge. Due to no sleep and 48 hours of non stop coding, my team mate who was supposed to present our solution screwed it up in the last minute. Now we blame ourselves for losing because of our bad presentation. -
New normal. New app to build.
- Still have to maintain older systems in parallel
- That leaves 1 week for developing the new app
- Slept 2 hours a day, coding coding coding
- Tested the shit out of the app because.. hey, its to help the customers' safety and health... I don't mind staying up late
- Finished the app in 5 days, code is now on prod
- Could barely look myself at the mirror because I look like shit
- Btw the app requires an external device as an input, the existing device works flawlessly based on my testing
- We need more devices
- Clueless manager bought new model instead. He assumed everything is fine, no testing is required
- Tested the app with new device model, doesn't work
- Deadline closing in
- Thanks, there goes my sleep
- THANK YOU1 -
I really loving coding but i cant stand people that take coding for granted, theres no single way to code there are a lot of ways to make a single function work and you can code it in different ways, i hate it when people dont use their imagination, in coding you dictate what you want to do, thats the power of coding1
-
!rant
Restarted #100daysofcode.
Gonna finish this time no matter what 💪✊.
It's the challenge where you do code every day for 100days.
I am not kinda well right now but it's perfect opportunity
I got the time I always wanted for coding
So no excuses anymore.
Hope you guys also having some adventures coding time 😉😂8 -
---Me coding away---
ESLint: Hey...
ESLint: Hey... don't-
ESLint: No I think-
Me: Not now bro! This is fine, I need to get this done.
---Months later I go back to clean some things up and I look to see what ESLint has to say----

A boss who is the most inefficient boss ever. No, yours is not, mine is, trust me.
In the middle of coding, never in the zone for obvious reasons. A workmate wants me to call him to discuss stuff as he is working from home, which I wish I were.
I keep coding and decide to call him later.
My boss interrupts me again to TELL ME IF I CAN CALL MY WORKMATE.
Whyyyyyy

#1 life lesson learned from coding: There are things I just can’t be good at no matter how hard I try.3
-
I'm at work coding at 21:00 on a Friday cause money, no life ya know, but then it hit me. I could be at home on coding on a Friday night and still I would have no money and no life but o would have ALCOHOL! Ballmer peak here I come!
Ps I haven't drank in 6 days and I don't drink to excess (often). I just find it enjoyable2 -
[at the end of a coding interview]
Me: Do you have any questions for me or the company that I can help to answer?
Candidate: Normally I have many questions to the future teammates, but you're not from the team I'm interviewing for so no I have no questions.
🤯11 -
Documenting your code is like peeing. You'll rather just keep coding until you no longer have a choice 😂1
-
Anyone else go to stackoverflow to answer questions when super bored or when there's no coding left to be done?3
-
I just wrote my final and last exam. First graduate in my family. No more semester. Am so excited. At least I can concentrate on coding now full time time2
-
For the first time I have got an opportunity to have an internship at a local software development team and they are asking for program samples now... I am a little nervous because I have never shown my code to anyone who understands anything of coding and I have no idea how it would do in an interview...4

Usual python code problems coming from someone who has been coding in Javascript and PHP (<--no pitchforks please). It's been months already but old habits still keep on coming back
- adding a semi-colon
- mixing spaces with tabs
- using a lowercase boolean
- adding an open brace when declaring a function
- forgetting the colon ( ;'s brother) -
Had to work with a lazy, stupid idiot who (literally) couldn't declare an empty string. Got in via nepotism and not only were there no basics but also no willingness to improve.
Something tells me that throwing someone out shouldn't be a pleasant thing to do but hell, I'm so happy that we can finally stop carrying that piece of dead weight and get back to pure coding without having to teach Programming 101 on the side.4 -
Do you all look for code complexity O(n) while coding? Or you make sure that your code runs and never look back what's happening ?
Because as per code review no one looks for code complexity and that's so sad11 -
-Dream with code.
-Compulsion to start coding every no profitable projects that I imagine.
-Buy a lot of programming books.
-Want to have the source code of my favorite DOS games.
-Hate business people.
-Love language wars like a viking.
-Love terminals.
-Hate GUIs.
-Hate printers
-Hate every non programmers.

Just a quick poll here to anyone who does a lot of programming, which IDE do you use? Do you prefer almost paper coding with little or no extensions or features or a full blown solution such as Eclipse?21
-
Colleagues who don't think about what they are coding... So I end up going back over their code, fixing bugs, reducing a search page (20 results) from 300 database hits to 150... Previously written by "senior" devs ARGH!!! No wonder the database server is collapsing2
-
Fuck start ups with large projects with no continous integration setup on git... and very many junior devs including the CTO(Not even a googling guru).... for fucks sake we cant deliver spaghettis as iF we are coding a restauRANT... fuck this shit load of a project....4
-
That moment when first coding challenge is a mathematical expression evaluator with custom unary operators but your code does not meet the standard because it did not cure cancer.
The fuck you mean I had no unit tests. You specifically told me that you don't want a lot of code. F@$#&#k -
Anyone else here that, if working on a challenging problem, just needs silence (rather than music or background noise?) Seems to be an increasingly rare thing, especially with younger folk.
If I'm just doing boilerplate coding / something not too challenging I can work with whatever. If I really need to think however - I do that way better with no auditory distraction.8 -
Feck. My brain bluescreened during a coding interview and I had a major panic attack. No clue what or why it happened. FML.1
-
One of the best times I had coding was when my friend and I were coding our very first program at University. Both of us had no prior experience with coding and really had nothing to do besides school. So we naturally became friends through coding.
Sometimes just thinking about those sorts of memories can take a great deal of stress of your shoulders, because one can think back to a simpler time. -
I know by heart that "premature optimization is the root of all evil" but not when I'm coding, no! I premature optimize the shit out of my code until I get crippled down and then I undo everything and make a working version no matter how terrible it is.6
-
I have been coding for 2 years, 1 month at a company
Teammate1 has been coding for a year, a genius, learns everything in a week, knows all major js frameworks, refuses to adhere to any rules except no rebase on pushed (luckily)
Teammate2 has been coding for a year, learns slowly, very reliable, has no common sense at all
Teammate3 the designer, really has the skills but always busy, never has time for a meeting, gets very mad if it looks different from her original plan.
We're all college students short of money so they all want to work for clients. I don't have the leadership skills / charisma for this.1 -
I have no experience with mobile app developement and i dont prefer coding in JAVA. But i want to make a mobile app based on an idea. Where do i start?21

Tabs, or No Tabs? I did the same as this commentor 2 years ago. I can code so quick now because of this simple switch. Here's why:
(source, Laracasts.com)
Ben Smith
"I think the most beneficial tip was to do away with tabs. Although it took a while to get used to and on many occasions in the first few days I almost switched them back on, it has done wonders for my workflow.
I find it keeps my brain more engaged with the task at hand due to keeping the editor (and my mind) clutter free. Before when I had to refer to a class, I would have opened it in a new tab and then I might have left it open to make it easier to get to again. This would quickly result in a bar full of tabs and navigation around the editor would become slow and my brain would get bogged down keeping track of what was open and which tab it was in. With the removal of the tab bar I'm now able to keep only the key information in my mind and with the ability to quickly switch between recently opened files, I find I haven't lost any of the speed which I initially thought I might.
In fact this is something I have noticed in all areas of writing code, the more proficient I have become with an editor the better the code I have been writing. Any time spent actually writing your code is time in which your brain is disconnected from the problem you are trying to solve. The quicker you are able to implement your ideas in code, the smaller the disconnect becomes. For example, I have recently been learning how to do unit testing and to do so I have been rewriting an old project with tests included. The ability to so quickly refactor has meant that whereas before I might have taken 30 seconds shuffling code around, now I can spend maybe 5 seconds allowing my mind to focus much better on how best to refactor, not on the actual process of doing so."
jeff_way Mod
"Yeah - it takes a little while to get used to the idea of having no tabs. But, I wouldn't go back at this point. It's all about forcing yourself into a faster workflow. If you keep the tabs and the sidebar open, you won't use the keyboard."2 -
Guess fullstack is now the trending thing. Read a book on javascript and code examples in the book, do same thing with python or any other backend.
As soon as you are done, add fullstack to your bio.
So many newbies following this path. Coding up alot of examples with no real depth in any particular language.6 -
wish can do coding in fix hours :(
Learning react .. just took one cup of tea in morning.. and dang its 8pm :( No idea about the time.. react giving me hard time. maybe am newbie ..
Hope so I learn this Single Page application4 -
Been trying #rust for 3 weeks now and I really like it. No hopes for a job, but it's nice to have different point of view when coding in Go.3
-
It’s very annoying that at my school we barely get any coding at all and to top it off it’s in a typing class using block coding. Considering it’s in a TYPING class you’d think they’d’ve used their typing skills to use but no, they instead use block coding meant for like 4th graders. This is why I say we need more coding classes in schools. Not only that but make it more mainstream1
-
If coding is fun then your job (Backend Developer) should be fun right?
No.
You have to setup projects which isn't fun.
You have to setup tools which isn't fun.
You have to write unit tests which isn't fun.
You have to learn to use some frameworks which may not be fun.6 -
1. Idea comes to my mind
2. I have no clue how to even start coding it (Im not programmer)
3. See my app working
Best feeling ever!2 -
Noone !!
everything i know I taught it to myself ,
when i got stuck at some point I figured it out myself ,
There is no dev that inspired me for
coding, i just wanted to make cool shit so started coding3 -
As a 0.1x programmer, I realised an important lesson today :
You can win school coding contests by plagiarizing code. No one cares, and no one will know.
Because the dude who won the contest was literally copying from Google and stackoverflow and they didn't caught him 😭7 -
SSUUUGGGGARRRRRRR
RRRRRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ą8 -
When all you can think about is getting back to coding as the 4 day no coding holiday has just killed you from the first minute.6
-
"I'm nearly done. Just one last bug to fix."
Time passes, coding happens ...
"No, not quite done. Just three more bugs to fix."1 -
I'll mention my first project that made me money. (in 2017). I got paid INR 1000 for 2 days worth of coding.
It was an information website where you could read about different pharmaceutical medicines.
URL - https://viagraonline365.com/
It no longer exists now.3 -
Everyone ranting about how they express themselves through code.
And here I am on project where I can make almost no decisions myself.
I got into coding for the same reason as everyone else. I'm pretty good, so they put me on this project. Junior guys get all the good stuff, 'cause this project is too important. Ironic, eh?2 -

When applying for a new job, how do you tell the difference between somewhere that is really old fashioned but wants someone come in and make improvements to processes and coding standards... And somewhere that pretends to want those things, but actually has no intention of letting anyone make those changes?8 -
!!rant
Today I wanted to finish a feature in some Python code I. Working on instead I scope creeped myself a bunch times adding "other cool features" and refactoring working and readable code that didn't need refactoring. Oh and learning about random things on SO and finally giving up on making any more progress for the day and reading devrant.
ADHD Self:"Coding is love, coding is life. Plus I'm getting paid."

"To-Do List: The Never-Ending Story" 📝
My to-do list is like a magical scroll that keeps getting longer, no matter how much I cross off. It's a testament to the infinite possibilities of coding and the constant pursuit of perfection. -
I don't like most of the people around me (programmers). I find most of them boring and with a really "flat" personality with no interests other than coding. I enjoy coding myself but sometimes I feel that I don't belong to this community. There is more in life than just your job.1
-
Why some people think it's fine to hire unexperienced people to do stuff, when there is no one in a company who could check if their code is fine?
Learning through active coding is fine. Until after two months later all you do is patching your code because you found out on stack that this is not a good way of doing it. -
The most fun I've ever had coding was creating a hidden object game in school (with Flash/ActionScript3). I even had a dude do voiceovers, it was dope! I would love to learn more gaming development but no time. :(
-
Popular opinion: AI is nothing more than complicated algorithms that no one appreciated before and probably never will. 99.9% of all coding would be AI if mainstream media had their way.5
-
dev: ugh we need to set and implement coding standards
same dev: no I don't need to follow what you just said, it's already clean and readable (it's not) -
I just read about the 'Learn to Code' nonsense. It seems some journalists told coal miners to learn coding for a living. Wtf.. As a person doing formal CS education after 1 year of work, i take offense for that comment. Coding jobs are dragged to the ground by these comments which imply that coding is a no skill, for everyone job. Opinions ?3
-
So I'm at work most of the day developing project managment system for better efficiency but I can't seem to keep my electricity bill up to date. Now I'm looking forward to some free time because I got disconected and everything is closed when I'm home from work. Even when I do manage to get off on time my boss needs me on evenings and weekends.
Now it's just NO BITCH, i ain't got NO POWER!!! ^^ yeah!3 -
Is sleeping on your desk an actual thing which happen or it is a misconception provided by movies?
I have never slept on my desk no matter how tired I am (I had done a week coding marathon) .I always wrap myself with fluffy blanket when sleeping.10 -
I hate coding views... I will code every service and controller there is until I have no choice but to code the views.
-
You know what's worse than reading someone else's code? Reading someone else's code with comments that make absolutely no sense!
It's like deciphering hieroglyphics. If you're going to comment, at least give me a hint, not a riddle.
It's not a treasure hunt; it's coding!2 -
I'm getting tired of coding. Not really the coding part, the dealing with people who tell me what to code and why part. Sort of considering making a move into a scrum master or PM role just so I can get fired when I say "No, we're not changing everything they've been working on in the middle of the sprint" or maybe "Yeah, no we're not going to put in a bunch of tickets to change the UI/UX without first talking to the designers, because that's what they do. Yes, I realize we aren't Facebook, but do you realize we "compete" with them because a huge number of people will compare our usability to theirs? (even if just subconsciously)"2
-
Not really a burnout, but after 10 hours of coding and almost no food it gets extremly hard to concentrae.
-
Just been on a like 4 hour no pause coding session (which is fairly long on my terms) trying out random stuff in Java.
-Interfaces
-Classes but weird

"I don't know about changing that part of the platform"
-"Do you see any other way?"
"No, but this one is pretty complex"
-"Would you like me not to do it?"
"No, but like, really test it, OK? It's a very complex part of the platform"
-"Would you like me to include the phrase 'this was really fucking complex' in the release documentation?"
Sometimes I think my boss is against coding :/ -
I teached it myself while still going to school. Today I have a pretty well-payed job and still no degree in coding1
-
"Hey mate, you should learn some zen coding you know."
"Ow that's one of your tricky bullshit"
"No man, look and learn!"
"OH FOR F***K SAKE! ARE YOU A WITCH?" -
I'm not that much of a people person, so when it comes to some social things i would be the last.
Bully in my school years, and no one knew who i was during Univ days.
Coding gave me Respect. When you are good at what you do, people are respectful and helpful.1 -
Headphones, best music playlists I have and a good cup of coffee.
Good for 4 hours straight of coding/planning if no one asks me to extinguish some stupid fire they made.3 -
Tech lead is getting on my friggin nerves. The tech lead keeps all the important info about the project for himself, does no sort of coding just merges stuff on Git and makes me handle any small fry problems which give me little to no insight into the project.
Then complains to the manager about the fact that nobody will help him and he has no time to do any work.
Meanwhile he creates own little club of people to talk to and stops talking to us devs.
Is this how its always been?7 -
Should i get a macbook pro no touchbar 2017 with 512 GB SSD or is 256 GB fine enough? Only for coding primarily focused on mobile development16
-
I really like coding for scientific purposes. It unites my big passions (natural sciences/engineering/coding). And I like the feeling of empowering someone to do research. BUT BESIDES DEALING WITH DUMB FEATURE REQUESTS, THERE IS NO WORSE PAIN THAN HEARING PHD CANDIDATES FUCKING SAY RETARDED STUFF. HOW DID YOU EVEN WON THE SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE PHD YOU DENSE SON OF A BITCH (NICE JOB ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT BTW). YOU LACK KNOWLEDGE OF HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL EVEN ON YOUR OWN SUBJECT. THE BEST RESEARCH YOU CAN PROVIDE TO THIS WORLD IS THE FLUID DYNAMICS OF AIR WHILE YOU JUMP OFF A SKYSCRAPER MOTHERFUCKER.

Where do I even start???? Python is killing me. I am a beginner when it comes to coding but somehow the indentation in Python gets me every time. No matter how many times I follow a tutorial I always end up with at least one indentation error. How do people do this?!?28
-
Had a nightmare last night where I was called in to do a coding challenge against two other people...on a whiteboard only and no Google or StackOverflow. I couldn't even get one line of code written. The other two guys got a bunch. Too bad one of my real life projects has a lot in common with this nightmare.
-
We were learning a programming language for implementing our idea in hackathon.
A student who is a comp student and has no idea about coding asked us "What u do in hackathon? Do u hack computers... :/"5 -
So I needed something to log how many volunteer hours im spending coding something for my school.... I logged 11 hours today. I have no life. Check it out though, it's called wakatime it ties into PHPStorm and everything. It really is a great "you need to go outside more" Indicator.1

I hate how my work mates think coding in Java you automatically become cleaver than most people who code in another laugauge ..
The hate Python and JavaScript , c'mon guys just write your fucking project so long it works you dont have to make statements on how Java is great. . We all no. . Statements like Python is English anyone can write are not welcome7 -
Ok, so i havent been coding in a while, but now i have somthing rant worthy!
So i was helping a project and THERE WAS NO FUCKING COMMENTS, I mean what the shit! Atleast add some comments its as easy as typing //, what has come of this world?2 -
How would you react if you got a dev job but had no technical stage at all? (coding/take home/quiz)4
-
So, A very close friend of mine is a fellow computer science student. But she has no interest in coding. Mostly because she never tried it. Is there any post or video that can help her find a motivation.
I know that interest comes from within, but set that aside for a while and help me out with something that inspired you.13 -

Stake in a Start-up
I have two of my friends who have planned on a start-up. These guys are engineers but have no coding expertise. How much stake should I ask for?
P.S: I've studied the market as well as the proposal and have planned on working on it.6 -
I think their should be like tests or any kind of competition on coding kind of thing in devrant.
Or tips related to coding no matter any language most common mistakes etc. That's my idea tho😅😅😅
What u guys say about this?? -
Is it a good idea to go to a coding bootcamp and shell out thousands of dollars? How about a college? I know some devs think it’s best to self learn and pay no one. I’m currently trying to make a big decision and looking for pointers.3
-
Quick question, because I have no idea how to Google it. The "block coding" concept that scratch is built upon, does anyone know if it's copyrighted in any way?
Working on a project, where I'm thinking of implementing something like it.5 -
My first ever system... It was bad, no coding standards, no reusing, no pattern, no nothing. I really don't know how I managed to make it work.
-
First thing is quite simply no overtime, I never EVER work overtime, you get my 8/9 hours a day, where I do work and that is it.
However, as dev's our minds never really shut off from 'coding' so if there are any bugs or complex issues, those most often get resolved when I am out for my run or cycle. -
Two weeks of camping ends tomorrow. Started missing coding after a week but no laptop carried with. Mind spends time thinking about projects to start.
-
Thinking of developing a mod for a game I play, but only thinking about it so far. No coding yet. Probably no coding until I'm back at work on the 26th.1
-
What music do you devs listen to while coding?
I listen to Jazz, lo-fi, and other slow, melodic instrumentals with minimal/no vocals7 -
Purple eye sockets and slightly wrinkled eye pouches when I smile. This is what a developer job gets me after all those hours of frowning my face at bugs all day.
Coding is affecting my health.
No, no, no, this has got to improve. I'm going to make sure I look better this year.2 -
The first company I developed software for had no coding conventions and it was visible in the codebase of almost all of our products. This is why I follow the coding conventions for every language I use.
-
Working from home.. no airconditioning.. no fan ('cause Covid particles danger).. f************ck.21

Remove it completly. There is no point in forcing it on children, governments are too slow to deliver a proper education plan that is not horrible outdated and proper coding teachers are non-existant.
Instead they shoul focus on STEM and provide computer clubs that are not based around grades and education plans.1 -
My routine everyday:
waking up
going to work
coding
going home
coding again
.
.
then exercising, watching shows and of course eating...
sometimes, no, I should say always remember that you need a time for yourself, you need to do some other stuff, not always coding, work, etc. We are not computer. 😉 💡2 -
I startet coding as hobby when i was a child, now its my job, my hobby and i still have no life, thats how coding affected my life =}

*coding while day* "no motivation not inspiration.. need more coffee" && *coding while night* "I can see the matrix and bend it to my will"

I've been coding professionally for about 6 years now. I'm changing jobs, and I have this fear that I'm going to get there, they're going to decide I have no idea what I'm doing, and fire me. I'm the sole income for my family, and this shitty thought scares the crap out of me. Does anyone else go through this?11
-
No more coding tonight. 10hrs straight today. 😴 My project can host images but the RESTful setup has fucked up my comments API to hell and back.
I think this senior thesis is one of those points where I seriously wonder if I made the wrong career choice. 🤯😬3 -
Coding a voice controlled IoT project is all fun and games in research until you notice no frameworks support your native language...2

Got home after a four hour physics test, laid down in my bed and thought to myself, I'll just chill here for a bit. Haha nope! I woke up a little over 3 hours later. No coding done today... :(2

How would you feel if you're about to finish and release your hard work which you've been coding for years and suddenly the electricity cut on you and you have no VCS?
Luckily, I have VCS.4 -
Shit... watched too many videos about AI. Now I'm convinced human coding will be obsolete in the near future...
Hello code block, long time no see...1 -
Unpopular opinion:
No one should ever argue over ANY coding style unless they're just starting out and thus have to come up with their organization's coding standards for the first time.
Once the standards are set, everyone should just comply with it irrespective of their personal preference. Or alternatively, include back-and-forth code formatting into the development workflow.
The only thing that's important is that by the time code is pushed into the codebase, it is formatted according to the defined standards so that the whole thing looks consistently written, which is basically the point of setting a coding standard.2 -
Best place to get developer/programmer HD backgrounds? My go-to for Gaming backgrounds is Wallpaper Abyss, but no coding/minimalist ones there (good ones at least)2

This guy said he became a senior software engineer at Google after quitting his job as a baker with no coding experience
Idk about you guys but that sounds pretty scammy to me

I hate General Ed subjects so much.
They waste my time to no end because I hate them and I procrastinate to study them. Meanwhile, I'm not coding because it makes me guilty that I'm focusing on college studies.
Gosh!
#RemoveGenEd4 -
At work in the room full of developers coding, someone...
- "Talk to each other, why are you so quiet?"
- *No longer code, start derp-ing* -
Silence so I can hear myself think and then just write the first line. It's hard to start, but once I get going it is even harder to stop.
Sometimes I'm afraid of starting because the codingzone switches my brain into an Asperger patient. I just can't socialize afterwards. So if there is a evening meeting morning coding is a no-no. -
What (realistic) requirements would you need to run windows 10pro OS with kali linux on a VM for pentest/ coding environment ONLY. no gaming etc. ?
Im starting my software development school soon, and im needin a new laptop.
Any requirements/ good to know appreciated from you old time code gods5 -
HAD a Happy morning.... had my coffee, started coding, lets say it was a productive morning.... then the boss called in the afternoon, then called again 5 min later, then called again 10 min later, and then called again 5 min later.... i had no will to continue coding for the rest of the day.....

About JS WYSIWYG editors.
When you're working on a project that does require a such editor, which solution do you usually chose and why ?
- existing library (which one ?)
- coding your own
- no fancy editor, just markdown
- no fancy editor, just bbcode or equivalent6 -
I get that this was a small team when they developed this and there was no coding guidelines...
But, using spaces and tabs in the same file is just unacceptable!!14 -
What do you guys think about Founders/CEOs of software/IT companies with no experience in coding? How can they ever understand a developer’s plight and run a developer friendly company?6
-
I'm pretty sure remote teams don't work with the remote team doing all the coding and we have the same exact JD and in the same department...*sigh* when management are foreign, they really are afraid of letting the local tech team help out. No wonder we are 3, sorry 2 since a fellow dev left to a better job in Amsterdam
-
Do u think game design is really a field one can study?
No offence, it just seems to me like a pseudo science.
I know there are some kinds of study programmes and stuff.
I just think it is way better for people to be experienced in coding, do graphics as a hobby and study psychology (or something related) instead.18 -
The new project was started.
Planning, analysis, design.... all right.
Now contacting all the companies for partner programs, finding payment gateway that will agree to work with our country.
For fucks sake. third week goes, and still no code writing. Just researching, contacting, researching. Urgh.
I want to code already! I am just
a backend/DevOps person! When it would be coding time?!3 -
So tomorrow i have my last January exam. Starts at 10AM. Kinda looking forward to getting it over and done with. After that i'm going to work on quit smoking. No more smoking and coding all night 😂 i guess i will always have monster to keep me going through the hours of coding i have until May6

if you feel like no coding, cuz of this super hot weather.
better meet some friends at the lake grab some beer and have fun. -
Coding has changed me a lot! I think differently, I make stuff, I am more creative, I now the difference between {}, [] and (), and I know what to do with my life. Also no more sleep.

I guess coding is a coping mechanism for not matching on any dating sites and hence no dates...
I guess you could say it helps me find alternative methods to release my per up desires... Although I guess a real relationship is something it can't replace... -
8:00 - 4:00 : at the office, coding non sense in-house mobile app projects which have no success at all. Two years so far !!

Code with no clear architecture, no documentation, no coding standards, no tests, many security-issues, a lot of hardcoded stuff, written by people forced to use a completely new technology stack and messing up, of course.
But we are not allowed to change anything, of course.
We have to keep coding in that style and with the tools present in the project. For uniformity, of course.
I managed to work on that code for 2 years... Recently it dawned on me that I don't give a crap anymore.
I quit, of course. -
When im coding a backend in java spring boot i feel like im "at home" and in peace. No other programming language or framework makes me feel this way. Do you guys also feel like this when you work in your favorite language + framework?6

BlueJ for Java and the IDLE for Python.
No big difference to coding in NotePad.
Just don't understand, why IDEs for learning purposes are that feature-less.
"Hey, you want to learn to code in that specifc language? It would be a shame, if you have to do almost anything by yourself."4 -
M dream project would be an AI that codes with me. I would train it to write clean and nice code.
Because I don't want to stop coding. And an AI that fully developes on its own is meh.
Finally no annoying lazy students anymore which refuse to follow fucking style guides1 -
SeniorDev(in code review): Yeah, I know this is wrong but I will look into it later
Me: Can you please mention the ticket you have created to look into it later
[JuniorDev gives me a high five for sticking to our coding principles. No sweeping under the rug! Felt awesome.] -
Holy fuck, after 1 month of not using my pc and no coding I look at the project I was working on and it looks like chinese, I don't understand anything, so step 1 it's gonna be trying to remember how this thing worked (caveman brain turned on)5

There's no favourite coding challenge for me. Of course I do them when I'm asked to but I don't think anyone can derive how Well someone works from these short toy challenges.
I once had a proper prototyping Challenge that was really fun. I had to Work on it in advance to the interview. I had to define the scope and how much time I will spend in it in advance and then explain and defend the scoping and all technological/architecture decisions and handle proper criticism in the interview. No bullshit coding challenges Had to be solved :)
I think these prototyping challenges will Tell you way more about an applicant and his worth as a dev than those little challenges ever could.4 -
Face it.
Most of the time, in PHP, you're just using Contracts to be cool.
Unless you're coding something like a framework, I don't see the point.
Or I guess, if you're hiring someone to take on your project... but even then, that person might feel restricted for no reason?7 -
When you wanna update yourself from jquery and learn react but your boss says its more profitable for the company to keep working with wordpress so no time for coding related research. So now i have to do it in the very little free time i have at home 😭1

"Doing this all day leaves you in a state of mild aphasia as you look at people's faces while they're speaking and you don't know they've finished because there's no semicolon."
So funny and true at the same time. A must read for all fellow developers out there. https://gizmodo.com/programming-suc... -
Anytime I write a line of code that works correctly the first time, I’m ecstatic. If I write a whole block or function that works right the first time, I freak out with happiness. Yes, I’m that bad at coding. The rest of y’all probably do such things on the regular and it no biggie. But for me, it’s vanishingly rare.

Fuck Visual Studio 2017. Fuck Roslyn. Fuck those constant shitty updates fucking up random things. Fuck most of my day being spent on not coding but fighting shitty ass laggy interface. Fuck having to work around buggy tools. Fuck features. Fuck no bugfixes. Fuck branch prediction. Fuck bloated software. Fuck Electron.

8 hours of coding later and Im back where I began, and Im not even a dev, Im a sysadmin with a little PHP background tasked to write a Sku generating bundle for a PIM running on symphony.
<Insert I have no idea what Im doing dog meme here>1 -
Don't have a manger/boss/mentor. Please give me an advice (coding/best practices, no 'life is to be lived' shit) which will help me in the long run.. Thank you..4

That piece of shit would just go take a nap in the middle of my coding . I can no longer get response from mouse or buttons
Its bloody painful. I love it4 -
On friday -
I got a feeling🎶
Tonights gonna be the last night for coding.
Fuck no, its a universal law there will be monday. -
Forget, "I'll make the identation and commenting once I finnished coding this". There is no such thing.1

So I'm competing in a programming contest for a $10,000 scholarship. I'm very confident in my programming ability but I have no clue what to build for the competition. Anyone have any ideas for a coding project that would wow the judges?2
-
Which development standards and coding styles would you recommend in a development team? My colleague @jacoKotze and I are starting to get larger projects at work and 2 more developers soon (juniors with little to no experience), so we'll need some coherence soon.
Tabs v spaces is more of a joke, looking for opinions on other things please.12 -
Hi folks! Help me in choosing a laptop thinkpad e470(i5, 4gb ram, hdd) or dell vostro similar specs and plus more feature. Budget around 650$
Thinkpad or Vostro or your recommendation.. My preference is coding stuff, android studio, no gaming7 -
Hey all,
This is no rant, its just a sincere question.
any of you got a good upbeat playlist on youtube you can share for us to listen to while coding...
?? for now i listen to Frog Leap Studios ... Guys amazing9 -
Not really a Rant but:
My Productivity Method:
1. Nootropics (Nootrobox Daily, Sprint for 6+ hour work/focus periods)
2. Ketogenic Diet (Ridiculous Energy, Amazing Food Choices, No Crashing, No Cheating!)
3. Moderate Exercise
4. Get Lit (Partying) once a month at least, hard liquors.
5. Nicotine (Vaping 6mg) while coding.
6. Caffeine (Bulletproof Coffee)
7. League of Legends breaks.
8. Weekly Cigar Social with other professionals.
Balance Vice with Virtue is a great combination for getting stuff done.
What keeps you going?2 -
What I hate the lost about exam season, is the lack of coding... Spend two months cramming all the theoretical parts of computer science, and it just gives no time to code
-
I am first in my family, no one before me had done coding. So
my family supports me in;doing code...3 -
Some side coding you do because you think it will help you with the main coding and then 10 hours later you realize, you don't need the side coding but you aren't honest with yourself and just continue the side coding because maybe someone could use this as a library and no, noone will use it and days later you still didn't finish the main coding.
-
Not a rant but where do I start with coding? I have next to no experience as in mandatory classes I wrote myself off as having "no chance".
What language should I learn first? How? With what? Etc
Thanks in advance1 -
Just started my first job out of college. Didn’t really get a good idea of what the responsibilities were when I was interviewing. Turned out that it’s like an advanced help desk role, no coding. No coding sucks but atleast I can use some cool software right?
The entire first month is only fucking online courses on soft skills. Can’t use the cool software until after I finish the courses. AND, I couldn’t even get confirmation that I will be using cool software. I might just be talking to customers. Fucking kill me
All I want to do is code and now I’m stuck in this shit job with no coding2 -
I have no Internet since two weeks. I'm desperately searching for a Javascript coding challenge (it could be a small library, framework, whatever...).
Any idea ?3 -
No judgment regardling the "H" word here. But right now, which would you rate the best Hybrid app SDK?
Flutter, React Native, Xamarin? Other? and why?
I started using Flutter in 2020 and I'm loving the results. The learning curve is really high but the performance is nice. But coding via widgets...just feels a bit messy.8 -
So, just wondering, I want to work on some coding, but have no idea where to start. So i thought I could try cloning some repos from github, and try to do sth. But not sure where to find repos that would work like that. Any recommendations where to start?2

coding is weird. a third party code you integrated successfully in past will simply integrate no more in new project.

Question:
I have client whose son is in 2nd year of degree college. He has asked me to give him a 2 month internship in coding.
He has no knowledge of programming. Knows basic c, c++.
What tasks can we five him for 2 months to learn programming.10 -
Starting my Java developer position this week. Turns out it involves absolutely no coding... pretty disappointed, but I'm just starting out. What do?4

I need an idea for a JS coding challenge for a job interview that a poor unlucky person is going to take after me, 'cause i'm leaving..
Requirements: it must be simple, but not simple enough for my other two colleagues. Aka no webpack, no framework, plain js inside a webpage.
My other two colleagues don't even know how to do an array.forEach() or literally how to code in general. They are copy-pastah programmers.
How can i do that without offending anyone?3
