I do push-ups and sit-ups whilst running long running CPU-intensive jobs so that I can feel the burn along with my CPU.5

Prank calls then:
"Is your refrigerator running?"
"Yes? Why?"
"Well... you better go catch it! Hehehe-" *click*
Prank calls now:

Story time! Promised this, so making good on the promise. Eh-hem.
Misunderstandings [A slice of life short play that actually happened]
Dramatis Personae (anonymized, bc of course):
Moi ........ me, myself and possibly some lint
Robert ..... co-architect
Daisy ...... line dev
Lisa ....... also line dev
Prologue: the beginninning
[A project is starting up, new devs are coming on, including the two individuals who drive this story.
Daisy, of Indian origin, an exceptional dev and lovely person. Mother, wife, very conservative by upbringing in her early 40s.
Lisa, also exceptional dev, lovely person. Mother, also wife, self-made immigrant with liberal views derived from personal pride and self-bootstrapping]
Enter the office, We introduce everyone, off to a nice start, everyone is happy and excited to be working on [large bank project].
Lisa and Daisy form a friendship of commonality, they have similar backgrounds by all appearances and similar concerns due to children the same age and shared employment. They seem to become fast friends and things proceed normally for some months. Smooth sailing, all is well.
The fuse is lit.
Scene: Lunchtime gossip
[Robert, middle 40s architect adjacent Moi, also architect, age is my own damn business [old, so very old].]
Robert: "So, it seems like Daisy and Lisa are getting along great."
Moi: *snerfs a little, almost chokes on enchilada* Yes, yes they are, It's nice to see...
Robert: *eyebrow, having learned to read my expressions* "Aaaaaaand..."
Moi: "I adore both of them, but they are primarily friends because they don't actually understand most of what the other says"
[Lisa has a thick Taiwanese accent, Daisy has a standard northern indian accent. Never the two shall meet]
Robert: "Are you sure, they seem to have a lot of conversations?"
Moi: "Positive, you weren't at lunch with the three of us. They're polar opposite in terms of values, it'll be fine so long as that never comes up"
Robert: "I'm not even digging into that"
Moi: *flan*
Sizzle.
Scene: This is bat country
[More months pass, everything is fine, project is humming along nicely, save a few blips of personality conflicts. Moi takes a vacation. A gas station, somewhere in the middle of Wyoming, a snowstorm, a sports car full of luggage]
*phone rings*
Moi: *looks down, sees it's Robert, eyebrow raises, answer* What's on fire?
Robert: "We had to let Lisa go"
Moi: "Ah, they finally understood each other."
Robert: "Yes..." *deep sigh*
[Fade to flashback]
Bang.
Scene: The office, Lisa's desk
[Daisy and Lisa are discussing non-descript conversation. Daisy broaches the subject of Lisa's past divorce and being a single mother]
Daisy: "It must have been hard, how did you manage?"
Lisa: "I had my daughter, she was my motivation. We made it here, I met my current partner"
Daisy: "That's good! It is so hard, coming to something new. I could never imagine leaving my husband."
Lisa: "He left us, we weren't important, I don't want to marry every again"
Daisy: "Surely you do though? Marriage is great for a woman, my parents found a great husband for me."
Lisa: "Haha, lucky you. Most indian marriage is like prostitution."
[At this moment, Daisy's demeanor takes a nose dive. Whatever was actually said, what she heard was, "Indian marriage is prostitution"]
Daisy: *tears begin pouring down her face, she flings herself back in her chair, head shaking violently she screams* "I AM AN HONORABLE WOMAN!"
[Daisy runs out of the room, straight to HR. Lisa sits there, stunned, not really understanding what just happened or the consequences]
Scene: Back in bat country
[Robert finishes the story, the emotions are a mixture of hilarity at the absurdity of the situation and frustration in the work void it has created]
Moi: "Satan, well. Fuck me. Fuck us. Fuck. Is Daisy alright, is she at least staying? We can't lose two devs at the same time."
Robert: "She got a few days off, she seems fine now, but she's... yeah, I never laughed so hard"
Moi: *double facepalm* "Yeah, the word choice was a bit outrageous. It's not like we didn't know it was coming. I'm going to get back on the road."
Robert: "Alright, enjoy yourself, I'll try and prevent any other forest fires."19 -
As much as I hate sport and love sitting at home at my pc
I'm gonna try to run a bit every day
I mean, it's told to be good for you
(so far, I started running around the "block" 2 times, I don't think it counts as much, but hey, gotta start somewhere)27 -

This looks good!
The users will be able to create a sandbox, basically a seperate Kernel for running a lightweight Windows Sandbox using Hypervisor for running/testing .exe files.

Installing MacOS on Virtualbox running on Windows 10 which is running on MBP Bootcamp partition.
Makes sense.17 -
If java had real garbage collection then most programs would delete themself immediately upon running.2

My favorite excuse overheard for running Windows over Linux: "I like my sh*t to work."
Then... as if it was planned, his presentation PC running Windows force rebooted to install patches.8 -
Just to add to the chrome memory wastage.
Chrome out consumes everything else running, and Virtual box has a full blown LAMP server running.4 -
Thanks to @C0D4 I rediscovered Folding@Home!
I've been running this on a very powerful server at home at full-speed for a few days now (quite some cores being used to the max right now, it's like I have a vacuum cleaner running full-time in my place 😄)
Then, last night it hit me that I have quite a few servers running close to idle (rented ones).....
I'm now running a total of 4 servers at full capacity with Folding@Home.
Can recommend!11 -
windows: cant uninstall because program is still running

Took me a few hours, but managed to finally run Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 on my old school Toshiba laptop running Arch Linux xD Still needs some work, but super happy I got it running :D15

Schrodingers cron: when a cronjob does not appear to be running and you turn email on it runs fine. Then you turn email off and doesn't appear to be running anymore...1

Two weeks of my life! All of this is on a win10 host with docker for windows. This is Docker running openvpn, and docker running Firefox in another container sharing VPN access from first container and also opens an x11 window port for Firefox GUI. Then x11 window server on Windows host to receive GUI. So left is firefox clearnet running native, right is Firefox over vpn in all containers, simultaneously.1

It's cute how most companies think that someone will take the time to personally hack them. Like nah mate there's countless bots running around the internet like a rabid pack of dogs sniffing ip addresses and running exploit, one of the stragglers will pick you off...
-
I wish people would stop using Electron for everything. It's like running an instance of a bloated web browser every time I open an app. Running Slack and Spotify eats a ton of ram, a chat client and a music player. I'm resorting to just running these apps as pinned browser tabs.18

Tried c++ and Qt today

When they want to take a business critical app that is using Enterprise Oracle running on Exadata, and move it to community Postgres running on Amazon RDS, because "it will be in the Cloud, and it will save us money..." No, no it won't.2

My dad just found out his laptop is running Windows 10..... He thought it was still running 8.1....

"It's very unfortunate that someone has to sit 10 hours a day on a computer screen but that's what we are paying for."
Working with an EU client.
Task is in stages beginning from assessment of an 9 year old Salesforce instance, cleanup and then transition to lightning.
The deliverabale in the first stage is excel sheet - objects(2400+), fields, apps, packages, profiles(110k), users, perm sets, apex classes, triggers, pages, s-controls and insert each and everything that a Salesforce instance could have.
Each and every data needs to be, analyzed and documented with our recommendations before being sent over. (Finding duplicates in 110k profiles??)
Oh, did I tell you, this was to be done four weeks? Weekend goes to hell.
That's when this beautiful motivational line comes up from the bridge, "It's very unfortunate that someone has to sit 10 hours a day on a computer screen but that's what we are paying for."
Fortunately(un?), that part of project is done and over with.
Now comes the clean up, identify packages not being used, remove them, qa and then push for deployment.
Mind you, this project is to be 2 weeks long. Its Friday of the first week today. And I am still working weekends.
Can I say, FML?5 -
When I got X up and running at 1am for the first time on my first computer, 486 SX 25MHz with 8 MB or ram.
The program SuperProbe is probably depicted now, but it got me up and running back then. -
I don't know which one is worse.
Freezing of laptop while am important demonstration or battery dying in the same situation.
I forgot the charger back home and the only thing client could make out was that the software we made bricked my laptop right after opening it and that I was making excuses to cover it.1 -
iPhone XSMax running iOS 14. Otherwise running normally.
DevRant app runs like old people fuck.
Is it just me?
Troubleshooting tips?
What’s this app written in? Is there a DevRant API? I’ll write my own DevRant app with blackjack and hookers.15 -
Set up an Ubuntu AWS ec2 instance running nodejs reverse proxied by nginx, kept running by pm2 and SSL provisioned by certbot.
I know that sounds like nothing but buzzwords but it really felt awesome to get a little node app stack sorted out!4 -
I’m running 1.5km every day for two weeks already. Anxiety still strikes sometimes. Depression is measurably better, but it was getting better months ago when I started taking fluvoxamine, so I can’t attribute this to running alone.
Running will help me in another way though: my mental health will definitely be going through the roof when I look in the mirror and see the beautiful, albeit scarred, slender body I posessed before it all started.8 -
I've running Mac for one month and one week now. Now, every time I'm going to use it my thought is: I JUST WANTED A NORMAL NOTEBOOK RUNNING LINUX I DON'T WANT TO USE THIS SHIT.6

No Google just because I use your app while running daily and hence providing you my data regarding my pace, my running track, my high weight and more doesn't mean that I want to diet

Running apt-get upgrade on a pi:

In 50% of my cases, I need to go into emergency mode and re-attempt the mounting since some partition failed to mount.
Anyone having a similar case where you need to semi-manually keep to "hit your old distro to keep running"?
Personally, I'm fine with that. Running an about 4-5 year old Manjaro installation where I did a lot with it. I see it a testament to my learned knowledge that I can keep ot running.7 -
I just think about it ...
Running docker on windows is shit
Running nginix on windows is boofff
Running apache on windows is boofff
Running WWS on windows is hugly
Install linux
All server software run like king
Don't have access to any adobe product for design and micro$hit office for client sanity because ODF is to special, i want my docx i said ... Like what do you want from me ... Shit the dev setup is a fucking mess because some enterprises don't want to wet itself in the futur...
Microsoft love linux BULLSHIT6 -
So i left 5 tabs running on my laptop with arch linux till morning ( Two of the tabs were a YouTube video).
The battery only drained like 3 % 😦.
If were running windows on the same machine, it would have drained to 0 🤯8 -
Tried this today:
Xubuntu running Ubuntu on a Virtualbox machine running Android emulator (ie. running Java virtual machine(s))
Failed miserably and even if it would have worked, I think the performance would have been horrible.1 -

So, I implemented a 30 min jogging first thing in the morning to my daily routine.
Needless to say that I've done it for about 3 days before I failed at waking up early enough to run before having to leave for college. It was a fun ride though 😊 -
Depends on what a tough dev day is. If it was just a tough day usually playing ice hockey helps. If it was a stressful day, board games with my daughter, provided it's not a Wednesday (her Mom's night). If it's a tough problem or bug I'm working on then alcohol, running or lifting, sex, general distractions will do the trick
-
First thing is quite simply no overtime, I never EVER work overtime, you get my 8/9 hours a day, where I do work and that is it.
However, as dev's our minds never really shut off from 'coding' so if there are any bugs or complex issues, those most often get resolved when I am out for my run or cycle. -
Found this gem while I going through Salesforce Workbench's disclaimer.
PS: I don't know why I was going through the disclaimer.2 -
So lately I've been thinking about building a server and running at home. I'm hoping that in the long run it would end up being cheaper than having a bunch of VPSes. Do any of you have experience with running your own machines? Do you think that consumer grade hardware will be sufficient for running at least a year?
Thanks for any input... :)8 -
Go on DevRant of course. Then go to the gym or go for a long run at the end of the day - Then we start again tomorrow.
-
I have these gulp tasks to preprocess my css and html. months ago it was all polished and working great.
I run the commands today, npm complains about deprecated something and doesn't let me run... I do updates, I try to run again: "Right now osX is not supported".
I literally did not change anything all these months.
Fuck you npm.3 -
Before: why the hell my code isn't running?!! FML 😬
After: How and why the fuck is my code running!! -
finally got my server up and running with a configuration I'm happy with! running Proxmox VE on the host, and each application in an LXD Linux container within Proxmox, and a reverse proxy server on the host to route subdomains to internal container IP addresses. check out what I've got running! https://mjones.pizza2

For some reason github is not working on my wifi.

Random thought:- if world is just a simulation.....
What type of hardware is running this simulation?15 -
Wow old MS, just wow. Why running ASP.NET with VS in W7 on my potato laptop absolutely annihilates it, but running ASP.NET Core with VSCode (in UNIX) is blazingly fast?

Been working on this webapp for ~1 year, and it's finally up and running! :D

If any of you would like to review it I would be flattered u.u14 -
My old budget gaming build (turned server) is screaming in agony right now.
Well, it's more like the AIO Water cooler is running on max and it constantly makes a clicky sound.
But still. Torturing servers by submitting a rendering job is fun.
...
Wait what am I doing -
Just closed VSCode running gulp, expecting it would terminate the session as well... it didn't.
Now I have no freaking idea how to shut the PowerShell running that shit.2 -
BSoDs/scenario I've had in 5 months:
Watching a video on VLC: 5
Chrome running normally: 2
Chrome running while waking up from sleep:3
Working on WSL: 2
Updating: 1
Seriously though. VLC? (╯°□°)╯6 -
Since there are so many Arch users, what kind of desktop environments are you running? I've been running Gnome3/Wayland and it's awesome, although I get a bit of screen tear, but it's tolerable.4

Who knew running Fiber Optics cable would be so hard smh. thought this job was gonna be legit. First IT gig but damn. running 250k,500k abd 1000k cables is no joke. I really would like a desk job ugh!!1

The texts appear a gazillion times better on the external monitor when I am running windows 10 on Bootcamp compared with when I am running MacOS.
Monitor settings (like resolution and size and connection) exactly same in both cases. 🤷🏻7 -
Bluemix: Hi, here have 1 instance of your app running, with 128M memory and 1024M disk. Btw, we are gonna take a hell lot a time to get your code up and running, and we love living at the 500.

Win7 Task manager: 7 slack.exe processes running after shutting down app. Force closes 1 process, revives itself. 16 chrome.exe processes running after closing chrome. 8 node.exe running when no more node apps running.. Jesus christ, clean up after yourself Windows.. No wonder virtual box complained about not enough memory to run Windows 10 image because I have to test my web app on Edge browser..1

Anyone managed to get xephyr working on OSX? Have over 1000 tests and running the lot takes a.g.e.s. Would like to look at cat pics while they're running.
