On his first week at job, the junior says:
Hey guys! Check out this new website I found! You'll thank me later.27 -
Ran into a girl who I had a crush on in high school at a bar last week. Hanged out for a bit, but then I had to run catch the last train home.
Today I get a message from her that reads: "Hey, it was nice to meet you last week. Can I call you some time, there's something I want to tell you. 😉"
I think to myself -- sweet and say that I have no meetings today, call me whenever you can.
A couple of minutes later she calls me, and the first thing she says: "I have this app idea..."
fuck, shouldn't have hyped myself up.29 -
!Rant
Convinced my girlfriend to learn UI/UX design. She landed her first job last week and it's a good one :)
So proud13 -
YES YES YES YES I HAVE MY FIRST INTERVIEW NEXT WEEK (SERVER MANAGEMENT/SUPPORT POSITION)
*JUMPS AROUND* (NOT LITERALLY BECAUSE AT A TRAIN STATION)40 -
After a week of failed attempts im about to post my first question on stackoverflow. If i dont return, tell my wife i always hated her.12

Working in a team with no Business Analyst assigned, moment when you realize that you spend at-least 3 hours every week sending old emails as a proof to business users that what we have developed is exactly what they fuckin' asked for in the first place4 -
Started Computer Science class yesterday, but i code like 12 years. My fellow mates mostly never coded in their life. They think its gonna be easy. They think they will have a social life. They think their gonna get sleep.
Those fools.11 -
Boss: please refactor this js 2k lines spaghetti code class and use it in our reactive functional app
Me: it will take like 1 week to refactor and plug this
Boss: but it's almost the time I needed to write it!
YOU DON'T SAY? MAYBE FIRST LEARN HOW TO WRITE DECENT CODE. ffs.2 -
"Only stay late at work when it makes sense to, otherwise always leave on time. There's always going to be work left, no matter how much you get done in one day."
Best advice ever.
Edit: I have to say it was during my first week in my first recent grad job.2 -
Interview (first job):
Interviewer: So what languages do you know?
Me: Well, i learnd C, C++ and Matlab scripting, but i'm learning C# as a personal project.
Interviewer: Perfect!
First day:
Interviewer(now boss): So, a guy is leaving next week and you will be replacing him. He has 70 projects and you will be responsible for this production test platform in JAVA11 -
@dfox man, do you realize the amount of desks that have cleaned *for the first time* because of this week topic? 😅
I'm puzzled, what kind of lobby put you up to this?9 -
I had to settle for a tech support job to pay my study loans. But a week later I got my first developer job in a big and reputed firm which pays well. This is almost like a dream come true.5
-
So I got accepted as a mentor for Udacity's Front-end web development Nanodegree program. Although I only 4.5 my first week, seeing full 5 star rating excites me more than anything.3
-
8 hours a day too much for you??!!
My first company has "9.5 planned hours" daily
If the average is found less than the PLANNED HOURS / WEEK, the salary is DEDUCTED accordingly.7 -
My first semester in college I had a six-week Saturday course on how to use UNIX that ran from 9-12. The professor hada habit of going at least an hour over time each week, so by the fourth week we're getting a bit tired of it.
That particular session, right at noon, he decided to teach us how to message other people on the network. Finally, we made our way over to the wall command a half hour later. Bored to tears, I type the following into my console:
wall "Are we done yet?"
Suddenly, the projector updates:
Kaji says:
"Are we done yet?"
Not realizing my name was going to be attached to it, I sank back into my seat a bit. The professor glared at me for about 5 seconds, then promptly wrapped up. Future class sessions ended on time. -

Some days ago I finished "Ray tracing in a weekend" (Peter Shirley) and I'm learning a lot :D
In the new year I will start with "Ray tracing the next week", but there are still some things I want to tackle before that (improve code quality, optimize... it's my first project that is bigger than a codeforces problem solution, a part from the projects at work).
Any sources of wisdom and recommendations are welcome!!9 -
My first rant so be kind ;)
All week have been waiting for a day off to finish a side project, and when that day finally comes, my daughter has a fever.
Will have to wait till next week.5 -
I work for a "Visionary" in our org. Motherfucker will use something for five minutes and decided it's the new-hot, and off we go chasing it.
"I did a Python + AWS tutorial last night, I get it. We need to start migrating everything to Lambda today."
A week later he hits his first error message that needs more than five minutes of work to solve and we're moving to a local Haskell stack.4 -
Told the new hire that for the first week they can just familiarise themselves with the JS framework, do the tutorials, and read through the code / docs.
Boss comes by Tuesday morning "you should be finished with all the tutorials by the end of the day"
Looks like we're throwing him in the deep end!
Context: new dev has Java and 3d games background. Our app is full stack JS7 -
Hello devRant, i think this is my first story here, but i want share my happiness with you.
After working 1 year as C# dev and no reaction of my current company to my claims:

Holy fuck that`s so cool.
Hope you guys have a good week!
Please excuse my english skills ;-)4 -
I released my first legitimate Android app to production a week or two ago, and it already has over 50 downloads on the Play Store! 😄😄😄11
-
My first job stared when i was 16 when i make my first power generator with some hardware stuff and c++.
I remember when it explodes one week later.6 -
When you have a product owner who, on her first day of the project, asks you ' What do you mean by UI?' and a week later question a UI dev why should something take 3 days?
Are you fucking kidding me? I am done with this shit.3 -
Yesterday, I decided to rewrite the code of a project I'm doing for a week. I rewrote all the code with a better agility (is it the good word? ) and I ran it. It worked the first time! It worked the first tiiiiime!4
-
Nice, I just removed my dpkg folder instead of dpkg/lock. Today is the first and only day for this week I can sit at my desk to work and this is first thing I did. And then I whine that I'm stressed and couldn't finish my tasks.
If I were not me, I would slap that-guy.6 -
Today is the first saturday where that is not a working day for me.
Joined a new company this week1 -
Me when I actually complete all the goals and deadlines I set for the past week. It's a complete first, but I did it.5

Hey y'all!
So uh, I just finished my first week in the new jawb. And thought you guys would appreciate seeing the swagducky's new home!
My first week was awesome, the team is a group of interesting, skilled and clever people.
They started me off on an introductory task... I've been building an iOS game in unity! Different to the say job but damn it's been fun 😂😄5 -
Brought in a meeting a really good idea. One guy out of 9 sayd, that it's stupid and we could not use it.
1 week later the same guy proposes the same idea to the boss and team. Took all the merit and when I confronted him, he denied, that it was first my idea.
Fuck my life...2 -
I was given a 1700 nzd budget to make my own computer.
The mouse i threw in with my own money. I went 150nzd above budget and the rest is coming during the week.
Its going to be my first custom computer. And im fucking excited like its christmas back when i was 7 years old!!!9 -
Unspoken rule @ my work: if anyone asks if there is any specification and/or documentation available, they owe beer to everyone in hearsight... So there was a time we got around 5 new hires in a period of 2 days and guess what?! After a day or two it was a real problem to stay sober for the rest of the week. // Yes, some of them did not learn the first time 😂😂😂5
-
Long time lurker, first time poster.
My goals for week 200:
1. Get engaged to my girlfriend
2. Finish my ems
3. Begin plans for launching my startup
4. Leave my deadend retail job, get a real job, and actually use the degree I spent 34k to get.
5. Keep learning cool new shit.1 -
So I just finished my first 40 hour work week.
And just an hour ago I had a meeting.
In that meeting I said pretty much this:
"Your old system is rubbish, I want to make a new one"
"Also we can't use the old framework"
"Also it needs to be in a different language that nobody knows here"
And they went for it!
At this point I think I can sell anything to anyone.8 -
Just went through my first week of working while on chemo. Life is hell and I'm contemplating not being a part of it anymore. It's only going to get worse and worse.8
-
I think I'm having my first burn out... I literally can't do shit for the past week or more. Fuck...15
-
I recently started my first job at a small place and on the first week they gave me access to the firewall server because they wanted me to implement a VPN service. It could have gone worse, the network was only down for 10 minutes.1

Heh.. Came across my first PC last week :) oh the nostalgy... Entity, Mach3, wolfeinstein 3d, Dangerous Dave in a haunted mansion and a guy pushing boxes in a 2d maze.
DOS, nc and windows 3.1 [in that pile of 5" floppies bottom left].
oh the times!8 -
My company is providing cloud infrastructure to our customers. For research purposes we are running a little openstack cloud in our laboratory datacenter were we can test stuff before implementing it in the productive environment.
Last week the manager asked me to shut down the cluster over night and only power on the servers when we need it. (about twice a week)
The reason: it produces too much heat.
My answer was: No.
First off thats not how cloud infrastructure works, and how about a proper climate control?
Sometimes i ask myself in which parallel universum our managers live 😑3 -
Local IT company proposes to give talks about the basics of web development in our school for one and a half week.
>"And now we're going to learn more about JavaScript."
>"The first thing we need to do is to import jQuery in our webpage."
>Literally no mention of plain JS.
this is why jquery is still not dead...........5 -
So I finished uni three weeks ago. Interview for a my first junior web developer position a week ago.
Received news yesterday that I got the job. It’s been a good couple weeks I’d say.3 -
I began my first Linux / i3 install 7 days ago when I posted my first rant... And today I'm declaring it officially *done*! (Mostly because if I don't, I'll spend another week configuring the damn thing.)
Here it is. Few minor things to edit/fix (like the fact that it sometimes randomly logs me out after coming back from hibernation... Yeah, "minor") but the functionality is mostly there. I can ("should") get back to work!16 -
I know I rant about how bad the app is I have to update on at work is but seriously first week into this job I found skeleton code from a taxi app, it wasn't in English and lately I found some code from some sort of funeral app wtf!
This just takes copying and pasting to a whole new fucking level!4 -
Just wrapped up week 1 of my first job out of college and it was absolutely incredible! I just had to tell somebody!
-
I don't know man.. I know it's !dev, I just wanna share with ye how beautiful my first Tomahawk steak turned out..
Relatively stressful week with requirements doing U-turns and 5 requirements all becoming first priority, I had my first feckup in a while (nothing bad, just wasted a couple people's time) and now I started off into the weekend with this beauty..
100% Irish grassfed beef with a glass of Redbreast 12. Now I wanna sleep and digest.. OR drink much more whiskey. Not sure yet.
Enjoy the long weekend guys 😬14 -
I should have known this job would be bad in my first week when they told me most of the classes are just copy-pastes of each other with different names7
-
It's a week late notice but...
I got my first actual-real-paid-not start-up dev job!
And I have no one to celebrate it with... Toronto..?7 -
Bout to go on a first date with this girl I been vibing with for a week and I am like getting seriously anxious like wtf. There’s no bug harder than dealing with what’s going on my head rn. Pray for me 🙏🏾26

In my first week of study again (at study location) after being away for 9 months. It really annoys the living fuck out of me that half of the students here are either gaming or watching series etc. Serious-fucking-ly, either DO YOUR GODDAMN STUDY or FUCK OFF.2
-
Wasn't given a chance to test out of a scripting(bash, python, perl) class for my Bachelor's program. To "rebel" I finished all the assignments during this first week of the semester and have a perfect 100% in every one.
At least the assignments were fun.
Take that <school name redacted>!1 -
Awesome day.
Linux-Days were awesome, I got my first stickers for my laptop and I just got a letter from the company, I had an interview at, a week ago.
It say, I got the apprenticeship as a sysadmin.
This is so fucking awesome.8 -
This whole week I’ve been writing Java (for the first time) and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a horrible language, written by horrible people, for the purpose of making other people’s lives horrible.
Fuck Java 🙂8 -
So I have a chrome extension, and someone reviewed it. At first she gave me one star, and wrote "extension is not working, bad UI, not good!" And ten minutes later, she gave me five stars and wrote "good extension, good features, working fine, good UI, loved it".
I saw this a week after, and I wonder: what happened in these ten minutes?5 -
The team of interns I'm working with are all off this week. I was given 2 skilled colleagues to cover for them. We had our first scrum today:
Boss: so what are you working on?
Me: I'm adding new feature 1 + 2.
Boss: and you?
Colleague: I am ... removing the shit -
So this is less of a rant and more of a "I'm very excited" post
For the past 8 months I have been working on a redesign of a magazines Wordpress website. I could've completed this site but I wanted every detail to be perfect. I was the only developer / designer working on this project
Now after 8 months, WE WILL BE LAUNCHING THE REDESIGN FOR THE FIRST TIME NEXT WEEK!!!!!!! EVERYONE LOVES THE REDESIGN AND THIS IS THE FIRST MAJOR REDESIGN FOR THIS COMPANY EVER SINCE THEY LAUNCHED A WEBSITE 8 YEARS AGO!1 -
So about a month ago I started this project for myself and decided I would work on it almost everyday, even if it was just for 30 minutes!
But when I get home I'm always so tired all I can do is sit, almost brain dead and watch something (youtube, netflix, whatever).
Anyway, haven't touched it since that first week.12 -
Ugh first week in Google Udacity scholarship and they all just directly want to start a start up 🙄😮😒
Yeah best of luck with that shit with your amazing html skills...2 -
Proud moment this week. Have been making my first contribution to Open Source software. And a huge project too. I hope it will long continue :)2
-
In just one week I have to make two presentations for my class, first one talk about open source and why everyone should use it and in the second one I have to explain how Git works and why it is so helpful for common projects.
It feels like God gave me an essential mission for life2 -
First week of work.
Coder comes to me and says: "have you cut your nails?".
The designer says "i think you should paint yours nails" to start programming
... i thought for a while so i c# them. True Story...
i'm a female programmer btw...6 -
Crushed my first week at the new job. I'm not a software engineer yet, but it's a QA job with a fair amount of test automation, so lots of programming and another step toward my goal.1
-
Me at the start of making first Wordpress theme: "I don't know why people complain about this?! It's great fun and easy!"
Me a week into developing said WordPress theme: "Damn it, they were right." -
In the first week of my internship I messed up the css by overwriting it. The company wasn't using Git or something. But luckily a colleague had a copy of it. Never been so stressed ever since.3
-
Ok I completely lost it... Been in a prod issue all week and basically just said the root cause is bc this team is blind....
Use the forest and trees analogy first but they still didn't seem to see it so I sent them this.
And then the chat went silent....2 -
First week is over at my first job in Web development. Really happy about the salary and the company, can't wait to Monday! 😁 though I don't have much time to my private projects, that sucks.3

I just wanted to share my excitement! I'm going to start my first job in tech in about a week! I am going to be a QA Scripter and I'm only nineteen! Please find this attached gif with great humor in reference to how I feel right now3 -
Just got selected for Udacity google scholarship!!!
It's two stage process
Got selected for first one
After 3 months if I did good enough I can be one of very few to get a nano degree program. There are 10000 in first program and only handful of 350 will be selected for nano degree.
Let's fucking get that one 💪
Looking forward to learn everything I can.
It's gonna be awesome year, finally some shit is happening 😬😄
How's your all week going ?7 -
Build a global, fast maps/tile hosting "platform".
Already working on this like mad and with a little bit of luck, I'll have a first version ready within a week.
Also learning Rust, becoming even better at/with Linux....7 -
PaperCSS - The less formal CSS framework.
I came across this CSS framework which became really popular in the past months (like 125+ stars on GitHub in first week). I wanted to learn more of CSS so I started contributing to it and the community was nice to accept my couple PRs.
Now it has reached near 1.5k stars on GitHub with version 1.3 released.
Go check it out:

Yesterday was the first day of my final exams. (They are scheduled this whole week) First exam was programming on paper and it went surprisingly good. I'm pretty sure i made one or two minor mistakes but overall it should work. (3 tasks: program a calculator; program a car-showcase program and explain quicksort) We had 3 hours to do this and even though i needed them i didn't feel any pressure. That was really nice. Thank you for calming me down the last days/weeks and ensuring me that i can do this.
I hope today's going as smooth. Exam of the day is networks. Wish me luck^^8 -
Hey devRant! The first episode of the Runtimerror Live podcast has been postedby @yarwest and I, and next week we're having @dfox and @trogus on the show as guest speakers! Check it out at https://runtimerror.com/podcast/...3

Going to have my first ever dev job interview next week! Nervous AF right now.
Any tip's? 😬10 -
Fun fact: I got my first job on starting of week 77 as a developer. Coincidence! I hope not.
Even devrant syncs with my life now.1 -
Hello everyone!
This is a kinda follow up to my previous rant:
https://devrant.com/rants/1442655/...
So, it’s been a week since I started the internship. I am kinda lost to be honest.
The first day was awesome, but I have been going downhill since then. I make so stupid mistakes and it seems like I always think different than my mentor/employer (me making mistakes). Then he corrects me and I have to rewrite the code which I had to spend hours to think and get working. 😕😕
As @RantSomeWhere said, the guy is actually nice and still appreciates me and helps me all the time. I am really thankful for that. 🙂
As @plant99 said, I do have to be working a lot to try and meet the tasks that I am given. The employer does tell me to not over work but I still do if I have to, to get the thing done. I don’t feel nice if I don’t finish the work. So I do spend up to 12 hours (not continuously) on it at times. 😅
The code base… oh my god!! It is so bad (to me). Don’t get me wrong, we use the linting and auto formatting tools, but I can’t get over the 2 space tabs in C++ code. It makes me feel like I am not looking at code but at paragraphs of mumbo jumbo stuff. 😭😭
Oh and yes, it is confirmed. I HATE FRONTEND WORK! Especially when languages like JS and C++ are used in combination and interact with each other. 😨😨😱😱
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate JS or frontend, but I hate doing it myself. So not my cup of tea. Kudos to those who actually do it! 😎👏🏻🎊
Overall, I guess, it is going decently. I feel so scared at times, consumed by the fear, that my code will be wrong and he’ll be disappointed in me. Yea I know that I shouldn’t be upset with how others feel. But it does make me sad when I disappoint my mentor (who is still rooting for me). 🙁
I am hoping to get better over time. This is definitely a great experience for me because my code has never been judged before. I have always been the “king of code” in my college/social circle. 🤭🤭
Honestly, this is actually humbling. I guess I definitely needed this 😅😅. And as they say, you don’t improve by being the top. You improve by leaping forward, ending up at the bottom of the heap of the next level, and growing up from there. 😅
Oh and I also realized - remunerative benefits are DEFINITELY motivating 😂😂😂😂
And the 5 days work also definitely makes me MUCH more excited for the weekends 😆😆😂😂
Thanks everyone for cheering, motivating, and giving me advise.
@oudalally I definitely found your advise quite helpful 😁😁😊😊
PS: ooh this my biggest rant/story yet! Yiiipppeeeeeee 😁😁😊😊7 -
Last time, working on a project with two mates at school.
I'm the one who knows how to read and understand correctly a doc for low-level c libraries (portaudio, opus) and working on sockets.
I make the barebone of our server. Co-workers should work on socket client.
After a week, the socket client is ugly, and almost unusable.
I rewrite the socket client in two days.
Co-worker, for a week : "the only contribution of Orionss is deleting my code" (it wasn't the first time)
In these moments, I would like to kill this guy1 -
Expectations VS. Reality : A new Software Project (After all designs and requirements are clear and fixed.)
EXPECTATIONS:
Day 1: Create workspace, Configure tools
Day 2: Implement high priority Feature
Day 3: Write UT and peer review
Day 4: Push first feature to Prod.
REALITY:
Day 1: Create workspace, Setup configurations
Day 2: Still setting up configurations
Week 1: Almost done setting up configurations
Week 2: New migrations issue, again reconfigure before coding starts
Week 3: Take a vacation
Month 2: Finally things are working but God knows what was the issue...1 -
Last week I stayed at a hotel near Prague. They named their access points like "first floor left" or "restaurant".
Even after 5 days I still had to retype the same generated password when i moved like 5 meter within the building... -
When i was in my first cs class and thought I had been in the computer lab for an <i>hour</i> and realized it had been 6 hours. (if I have to work 40+ hours a week, it should be something so fun that I get lost in it and it that feels like 7 hours a week).
-
I've never coded (for work) on vacation. I just turn off my work laptop and my work phone. So I can spend the first week of back to work for going through my email & messages.
I'm not irreplaceable and I work with competent people. (At least that's my goal at work.) -
One week into my new job as a junior mobile developer I receive my stickers from devrant (for posts I made while still a project manager and self-studying to get where I am now) - on the same day I did my first 12hr workday to complete work for my first sprint.1
-
I'm about to quit my job this week to start my own software company... I have a meeting this friday with the first potential-client and I feel very anxious about it. I also feel scary because if this doesn't work probably I will stay unemployed with a 30K debt because of my Mac
Scary but anxious... Feel pretty excited, wish me luck guys!14 -
The job market is lol
Graduated 9 months ago, working minimum wage jobs and applying to jobs, never getting an interview! I finally get a job in my field, and within my first week on the job I get calls for 4 interviews, all paying more than the job I took
On top of that my parents think my salary is way too low but beggars can't be choosers right4 -
First of all I want to say that I like how much this group rant is inspired by people complaining about their parents last week. (there were a lot)
Whenever I wanted to proudly present my family something I programmed they just answered (and that really infuriated me) "Just don't do anything illegal, ok?".
These words held so little appreciaten for what I would invest so many hours into because I love it so much...1 -
This is the first time where people stumbled upon my blog posts on each day of A WHOLE WEEK! Amazing 🥳2
-
This bus driver really has to stop wasting my fucking time. He was 8 minutes late in the first place (this line is NEVER late) and then he took a 10 minute detour which means I'll be 2 trains late for work. Fucking great start on the week!5
-
Last week I created a stackoverflow account and posted my first question.... Got banned for posting for 03 days .... :/12
-
So I've got my first sort of proper gig. I'm tasked with writing...
A goddamn minecraft plugin in java.
Well, it's actually rather fun strangely enough. My ideas of payment were not declined but rather accepted, the other devs are nice and everything is going well for now.
Also: Do expect a mental breakdown post next week or so4 -
Printer strikes again!
Boss is pissed off that the printer is not working for him but works for the accounting department. He slammed the "photocopy cover thingy" with a "putain" (which I doubt will make it work). I had told him multiple times last week that the credentials he entered is wrong and he needs to verify that first. He will hopefully eventually realise it. Till then
Printer: 01
Human: 002 -
Finally made some progress with the project that has been kicking my ass the past three or so months.
Also finally free from the migraines I've been having the last couple of days. First time in a week I'm not either nauseous, in pain or both.
Now I'm going to make grilled cheese sandwiches and watch some true crime youtube. -
Second week of my first job as a developer, and I'm not even finished with my degree. Thanks to whoever made me enter this field.1
-
> In an online team meeting where our manager is telling us to wrap up the final bugs and get the release out as soon as possible so we can enjoy Christmas and the last week of the year stress free

My cousin a recent graduate who just joined a company told me that he took down production today.
I said "Child it is a rite of passage as a developer, you always remember your first time".
Ahh this brings back memories of my first time I took down production. I would often look at my email that whole week to see if I was fired.5 -
Aaaaaw fuck yea. I'm finally at my mother's, for my first holidays since late December 2017, and I FINALLY can sleep as much as I want without being bothered. I just slept 30+ hours in 3 days, which is close to what I sleep in a week. Still tired though, but I feel so much more relaxed than the evening I arrived at my mom's place 3 days ago *.*

Got my first job last week as a junior gameplay programmer. Dream job 😁
Well, more like a dream position than the actual dream job.
Proprietary engine and a new language are kinda hard to wrap my head around, but I've been having so much fun that by the time 4 rolls around I usually don't notice it and stay for an hour or so more.
I love it!4 -
3rd week at my first developer job. Did a couple PRs with the help of my mentor. Still feel absolutely useless. I feel like a complete imposter.11
-
First week in a new job left me wanting to work there more.
No mails from old place. Strange. I've left them just as two completely green guys were to come for the first time.
Well, not my problem.1 -
First week in a new company... Everything looks soooooooooo complicated, I've got no idea how I am going to catch up 😅4
-
My coworker is a grade A super badass.
He work as a consultant and is only on site 2 days a week. He wasnt here on tuesday but got in today, first thing he did was starting to complain about some improvements we made during the week. Next he decided to remove and destroy parts of our software and check in his "improvements". Then without telling anyone about his changes he went home after lunch.
What a legend.2 -
when u r hired as a django developer and told to learn php also in the first week. (gonna quit this job)4
-
This has been an interesting week! In my first management position, my first person to hire as a senior frontend developer has been approved!
Also made some killer API's this week! Show me the love!
The hunt is on! Heading to two meetups in Sydney next week 😉1 -
First week on the job...excited to start working after just finishing uni..they gave me a monster C# project that hasn't been modified in years...and all the devs that worked on it are no longer employed and the code has absolutely no comments.
And I'm supposed to learn it and modify it...fuck me this is gonna take a while.4 -
Just finished coding the first parts of my soon to be obviously awesome CMS ,😁 been thinking about it for over a year, been designing it for about a month, did the database schema a week ago and this week I finally got to coding the UI kit, the database migrations and the foundation for the system 😄 and right now, I actually finished the installation page, much waow
Check out the most amazing video of the installation page here lol
https://youtube.com/watch/...7 -
I had 2 features I coded pushed to prod today at work! It's my first week at my new job. It made me realize how toxic and detrimental my last job was to both my self esteem and career. I'm so happy!!2

I ordered new computer by separate parts so I will have what I want. Choose to not be delivered by mail but pick it up by myself, so it will be faster. Boy I was wrong.
First of all one part was not available so I have to wait one week longer. Then after a week they say I can pick it up. But I was on vacation.
Finally I was back so I went pick it up. Came there and they said they can't find one part. It supposed to be there but they can't find it right now.
So now I am still waiting.4 -
I noticed this morning that someone switched the keys around on my keyboard. I asked my coworkers about it and they said they did that as a prank went I was out on vacation. That was the first week of August and I just noticed...4
-
How fucking difficult is it to first figure out what the hell you want me to build, before assigning me a project?
But noo...make me implement a feature that will do a completely different thing in two weeks, and a completely different thing a week after that...fuck you Jeff3 -
First day of a new job.
Just found out that I am locked in to using Internet explorer on an ancient desktop running Windows 7 and I can't download any text editors that I want (atom, sublime, Android studio).
All because they are "security focused".
probably gonna die from smashing my head on the keyboard before the week is over.12 -
Spent 2 days refactoring code written by our "offshore team". I've done refactoring on the same code in the past, probably upto about a week in total of refactoring now. The code looked like it was written by someone who had literally just finished their first "Hello World" app - loads of code blocks copied and pasted instead of declaring reusable functions.
The whole thing should have been done by us in the first place.
And yet our money-conscious company wants to employ more of these developers. Cheaper than us? Sure. Quantity over quality though, but I guess money is all that matters to the big cheese1 -
I was looking at painting the interior of my house the other week and my girlfriend asked me what my favorite color scheme was and my first thought was monokai.1
-
I started a new job about a week ago in an R&D software house which is a completely different world from what I am used to.
I worked as a coder in small teams, sometimes with Agile but always sunk in multiple projects at once - requiring constant switching of sprint goals week to week.
Now, I am alone (first person in a "maybe-in-the-future" team), doing research and preparing a demo for the client. It's hella lot of responsibility yet I found it weirdly liberating - being on my own, in control of what I do.
It may change in the future when project will inevitebly grow, but for right now, a week in, I started smiling while coding and learning, which I apparently haven't done in years.2 -
When I was in my first year in university, at the Introduction to Programming class, we had to do a Java project and my partner was someone who was always bragging about how much he knew about programming. Me being someone who was learning programming by the moment I started the course I thought he was going to help and teach me cool stuff.
The first phase was due to deliver in one week and literally my code was all original and my partners code was all copies of others work. Out project could'vw been graded 0 because of his code (because they used a programm that compared variables of each project to see if.they fins copies). He practically didn't gave the effort to try to code, just copies. I spent the whole week correcting his work so that I wasnt penalized in the end...1 -
One of my most inspirational places to create devRant rants! I visit it every week. For a Sunday fun experiment I will gift the first person to guess where it is a devRant 'devie' stress ball or t-shirt. You must provide specific details. We can figure out prize logistic details thru @dfox. There are hints in the image 😀 Enjoy!16

First day back after 2 week vacation.. It's not even lunch time here and I've already used up all the 'fuck!'s for today o.O4
-
First job. Started 2 weeks ago, I'm doing an internship in a Web development company and even though my studies were mainly for Java and Android, it's going fine.
Past week I learnt to use .less and HTML5 and will start with Javascript now.7 -
fixing the 5th bug this week that stems from liberal use of First() on enumerables that are unlikely but not in any way guaranteed to be non-empty.19
-
I think it's incredibly sad that one of the first serious discussions I ever have with my child will be how to Google yourself effectively, to do it at least once a week and how to go about getting certain things removed (If you can) 😕2
-
I finished a bunch of coursework yesterday and turned them in so that I could have some time to work on my side projects or self study for a few days before focusing on class again.
Today was gonna be my first day to enjoy this.
I recieve an email with the second batch of coursework thats due in a week. 7 quizzes, two exams, and 7 project labs.
Yeah, fuck you, too.2 -
Halloween reminds me of when I started my first tech job. It was a week before Halloween. I arrive for my first day. The front door that’s normally locked is wide open. It’s quiet. There’s caution tape everywhere. I think, “oh no, what happened?!” I debate whether I go inside or go to the lobby and ask security if they’re aware of a possible crime scene upstairs. I cautiously step inside and…everything is business as usual. It was all part of their Halloween decorations. I can laugh about it now, but I had quite a scare. 🎃

My first dev job was making and maintaining a shop on a Windows XP and xampp. We tried it like a week and i secretly changed everything to go to 000webhost. It was great there and no one had problems with the website. So... Hope the next guy after me thinks of a smartar way because they didn't want to give money for hosting....
-
Hi guys. I'm totaly new to git and github. I visit it from time to time but I never contributed.(i know, my description lied, a bit. i forgot to update it to say yesterday, a week ago etc.). I just created my first repo. I want to know where would be a good place to start to learn about it and know how to structure it and etc?15
-
Anyone have experience taking SSRIs? What's the first week or so like, did it help long term, and any withdrawal issues?14
-
I work remotely from the rest of my team and I just came back from a 1 week vacation. Logged in this morning and no one else was online...
My first thought was WTF happened... did something blow up do bad they all gelot fired???
Turns out today is a holiday for them. So now I've a whole day of peace and quiet to figure out what the hell in supposed to be doing again. -
About one week in my new entry level job and I feel completely clueless and useless. This is my first professional environment. Is this a normal feeling? What was your first programming job experience like?6
-
Well... Just last week one guy somehow completely broken our production server while creating an WordPress using Ghostscript for some reason. First this CMS users 100% CPU, then something has happened and whole server couldn't get up. Admin had to restore it from a backup. There are around 7 client on this server and all of our projects.1
-
The whole fucking npm i fucking hate it.
Most of my worthless time i'm doing backend jobs. But when i wanted to make a simple web frontend from my app with vue - hell has begun.
The first week was "wonderful" but after that... i needed to update dependencies.
I don't wanna describe my frustration when everything was throwing a whole avalanche of errors
I hate npm i really hate npm3 -
Today I had my first app preview. It went really well, although not all the functionalities worked as expected, the product owner was very pleased!
Perfect start of this week! -
I got a new job recently(that's an older rant's story) and I find amusing that I'm still getting reject notices from job offers which I applied to... 2 months ago 😂
That one from 2 months ago is quite funny cuz I didn't have any other interview with the company, just like the first interview with a HR lady, so after one week I gave up with that company and moved on. So I received the rejection notice today and my first thought was "how considerate!"5 -
Getting my first ever second dev interview for a Node.js fullstack role next week(First interview wasn't technical, they gave a coding assignment which I passed)!
What should I expect? Any tips?1 -
I will have to present some algorithms at our school festival next week.
Any idea for a good real world example to demonstrate how breadth first search works?3 -
So i started an (8 month) internship in January. Team of 4 (2 senior/mid level devs + boss) plus 6 or so other people in our other office overseas. Everything was going really well IMHO. Boss's feedback for halfway through the internship was good too.
First 4/5 months were great: loved the team, got feedback and help when i needed it, wasn't stuck doing support too much, etc.
This all changed when both the devs moved to our other office. My boss works from home a lot and has frequent meetings, so i hardly see him. I have a 1 hour window first thing in the morning if i need help from the devs overseas. After that im on my own.
If i get stuck, even on something very small that a more senior dev could explain in 2 minutes, I'm stuck either unable to work or figuring it out (wasting hours of time) for the rest of the day.
On top of this, since I'm the only one around in our office, im stuck on support every week which takes hours of my time usually. Last week support ate up most of my week, which put me way behind schedule on my other work. (That was an unusually busy week of support.)
Feeling incredibly frustrated right now, just wanted to get this off my chest.12 -
So my Database professor decided that we should design a database with like 4 tables and hundreds of records and we had to write like 100 queries to produce a specific output from the tables we designed. All in less than a week. This is the first time I'm learning about databases, mind you.5
-
My team lead at my summer internship hailed from an MFC background.
I was able to dictate a whole block of jQuery code to her orally while I was in a hurry to go for lunch, and she typed it in. And it ran perfectly in the first time itself.
jQuery isn't a great deal, but it was a confidence booster for a guy who had only worked with JS for a week. -
Hey guys
I'm starting my first programming intern job in a week.
It's a big company and have many projects and they liked me because I knew some Java from college.
I obviously have no industry Java experience but am looking to review the book used in my class & the projects I did.
I'm still kinda nervous a little cuz I don't have any idea what it's going to be like.
What could be advised to do while waiting a week? Any good Java brush up idea
Thanks3 -
Prepared my first own Pathfinder Campaign over the last week. Three hours before it starts someone calls it off.
A week of work thrown in the garbage. Feels good.5 -
We take over development of a live customer facing system and PM agrees date for our first code deployment with client CIO
Me: The dev and staging environments don't have any test data currently as the old agency screwed it up
PM: Well you better load some
Me: There isn't any... It'll take 10 days to copy prod db due to hosting provider SLAs, leaving 1 week for SIT, UAT and performance testing (assuming they don't screw up)
PM: Well the date is set, 1 week will be enough for testing2 -
Not a rant but i got my first homelab server this week :D
Looking forward to playing with it. Already installed esxi, and openvpn.
:dell poweredge t130 with 16 gb ram i found for a reasonable price. -
During the first week of my internship colleagues were bringing me coffee. Then they started nagging and taught me how to do it for them too.
-
First day of my first developer job is Monday. Oh shit. Nerves are starting to set in. What if I’m not good enough for the job? I mean I didn’t the coding assessment they wanted me to do. And passed. Which is why they gave me the job. But fuck man I’m nervous! I have never had a job like this before. And it’s remote after my first week. Oh shit.7
-
I was supposed to have an interview for a software developer internship at a bank today, but they rescheduled last minute due to a "time conflict". This was to be my first summer internship interview. As if they didn't put me under enough stress already... Now I find out all my stress all week long was for naught.
God fucking dammit.3 -
Your profile is in consideration.
Week-1
HR: We'll let you know.
Week-2
HR: You're one of the top 3 under consideration.
Week-3
**HR won't answer/reply to text/emails
Week-4
I accepted the truth.
Corporate world: Welcome to the employee life!
This was my first ever interview, referred by a guy I met on LinkedIn.3 -
bug comment in the tracker, from the new junior dev, during her first week:
"probably fixed by [other dev]".
Among the unhelpful comments, this was a special gem. really special. a What the Fuck did you mean by that special. Was it fixed or not? who fixed it? [other dev]? someone else?
it was better not to have any comment at all.
later that junior became a really good dev... -
First thing Monday morning, get a group text about our upcoming release. Boss says there's nothing important, nothing to release, we can maybe skip.
I just busted my ass last week implementing things that need to be released this week. Good to know the rest of my team have been doing nothing productive for the last month. -
My boss is being a stupid cunt. To give you a background we were facing issues with our Collections system. First week December 2019, I and a colleague of mine came up with a new efficient collections architecture. My colleague and I started to Code and create automation scripts mid December and completed it in First week of Jan 2020. This PoC version was supposed to be just between the Dev team(App Dev and Back end, also one from the Ops side to verify the data). I did not receive any feedback on the actual collections system and the data integrity but during this time all they’ve done is take meetings with no real outcome. I raised this and the only email I got is data is looking fine when I know it is not.Now in First week of Feb, he is stressing us to go ahead and deploy the architecture in Production and we have not done any Code Review, Static Code analysis, any real tests on Code and deployment scripts. Have not discussed any metrics for our dashboard and alerting. I have no idea how to handle this cunt. I have even asked for resources to atleast productionalize the code and move ahead the deployment and still no out come. I’ll go in a meeting with him in an hour, I will be very blunt and tell him that whatever he is doing is a foolish way and maybe resign in couple of weeks6
-
Do your colleagues read the emails or they ignore them like mine?
The usual answer is: sorry no time to read, place a meeting.
I do not want to schedule yet another useless meeting because you are unable to read two lines of text.
If I wanted a meeting I would have scheduled it in first place.
Why have I to lose 1 hour of my time to explain, then some cannot join and ask for a follow up meeting, where I have to explain again the same things.
Obviously during the first meeting nobody has even read the description and has idea of the topic, so "we need to check... schedule another meeting next week".
You can imagine what's gonna happen the next week...1 -
First week of doing C# dev. Not quite getting the hang of it yet, I’d still prefer doing nodejs all day2
-
I signed up for a trial of some time tracking software. Apparently the company that owns it is incredibly aggressive with their sales department. They sent me 10 emails within the first week (still sending even though I unsubscribed) and have started calling me every day. What have I gotten myself into.2
-
Getting a lot of headaches? Try replacing coffee/energy drinks with ice cold H2O first thing in the morning. It works after a week and it shocks your body into waking up faster.2
-
After giving up on multiple attempts to contribute to opensource projects, came to know about 'yourfirstpr' on one of the comments here.
Long story short, a week later and I've made my first pull request to libgit which has been merged :)
Thanks DevRant community 😊2 -
I have the first of 6 interviews next week with Google, after completing level 3 of the Foobar challenge...
I’m 100% self taught and this will be my first interview for anything development related. Needless to say I’m nervous as fuck and imposter syndrome is hitting hard.
Anyone have tips? Things you wish you knew before your first developer position interview? Or just resources? Trying to be as prepared as possible.5 -
Can next week topic be "Your desktop parts and price" or " Story of your first desktop"?
I'm planning for my first custom built desktop 😁8 -
It's been 1 week since I started my first Job. Currently I am given task to do bug fixes on WordPress. In 1 week time I am already under extreme pressure. Today is Friday and I need to look at 3 different projects. Plus on top of this I am new to WordPress. I sometimes go home and continue the work to meet the strict deadline. God this is hard!!3
-
We are 1 week from first system demo of a down well seismic system. All the SW to run on the sensor nodes inside the well pipe has been developed with driver mockups since the FPGA team hasn't finished their part yet. So, integration, integration testing, system test and bug fix must be done in a hurry! Does this scenario sound familiar?3
-
So, this week I started working on my first mobile app with Xamarin Forms. I already have a login and register functionality. The mobile app is connected to an Laravel API and SQL database. Happy with the progress so far.
I am new to C# so I had some struggles, but after some days I began to really like it.9 -
Thinking of writing new books
"How to become obese in a week?"
And
"Race between your code and yourself. Who explodes first!"3 -
Some of the rants this week have been really touching and amazing. This small community holds within itself so many amazing stories.
The most intense day for me was my last day at my first job. It was sad to see some of the best developers I had personally known for the last time. I learnt a lot there and had some really fabulous moments. -
My friend/partner told me on the first week that he "can code" and he will "do the front end of the web page" (its a web application design mod)
Needless to say I had to carry the whole work because he couldn't design nor write php.
Or write a report
He submitted the wrong report
He had one job
And now we arent friends anymore -
Suggestions @dfox :
What about profile achievements?
10/100/1000 total +1s
Invent a new metric unit: rants/week
Can @localhost get a gold star or something on his profile for first to 1000?
Silver stars for people who gave an idea that was impliemented
Bronze star for people who have gotten a stress ball
I'm half working on this project, half thinking of DevRant... It's Friday!6 -
So, I just started Week of Code 23, this was my first online competition. I got the email to start the first challenge and I clicked the link, then I went to do something else. When I got back I solved the challenge in 5 minutes (or less idk). I clicked submit, and then looked at the leaderboard.
My current position was something around 900 and I took 70+ minutes to complete the assignment xD :p
Bye chances of winning a t-shirt2 -
Recruiter reached out on a certain other social network where people seem to be humbled a lot.
First interview (a day later) goes well
Second interview (a week later) also goes well. They tell me there's one more technical interview, but that shouldn't be a problem.
A week later, that interview is a breeze too. Interviewer said they'll prepare the paperwork.
Another week goes by without communication, so I ping them.
A week after that they send me an email saying that they need references they can talk to. A co-worker and a direct manager.
Uncommon in my part of the world in general. But coming up with that idea this late in the process? Really? But ok, I provide those in like an hour.
They take their time, but eventually call the co-worker. Another week after that, they still haven't called the manager, so I ping them again.
Silence for another couple of days, then a very sad email about how the general situation has changed and they've now stopped hiring indefinitely1 -
If a job interview went well and they said they'd be in touch about a second interview, should you contact them after a certain amount of time asking how things are going? At the end of the first interview, they asked about my availability for this week and I said I was fully available and I'm really surprised they haven't contacted me at all.2
-
Past week our Neural Network professor told us after the lecture that the colllege is taking steps for investing in Nvidia Digits DevBox. At first i didnt knw what it is. I googled it and came to knw that it is a fucking beast! Those specs man!!!
Its nice to see that your institute is taking steps to bring latest technology for students.8 -
At my workplace nobody wants to work to prestashop project, and whenever someone complete a task he instantly earns a *prestashop level* with his personal bedge. I'm the new one and after my first admin-backend-module I earned the level 1 with the first bedge: the sticker (photo as prove). P.S. I already hate prestashop, just after a week. P.P.S. the prestashop's master (prestaLV 7 or 8) had already earned the last badge:"the precious metal keychain".. is a little truck with the logo on it.. is as ugly as it sounds1
