A note on devRant community etiquette. I've seen some behavior lately that I want to just mention since it goes against the rules of our community. We've specifically built moderation tools into upvoting and downvoting, and that is how all content should be moderated.
Commenting on rants that you don't think should be posted only gives them more exposure and unfortunately at times people trying to moderate content via comments and rants have gotten abusive towards other members. On the contrary, I've yet to see any of the people these select few members accuse of "ruining the community" act hostile towards anyone.
So with that said, I wanted to make sure this policy is visible, because commenting on other people's rants, especially in a hostile way to stop them from posting, is bannable and we really don't want to see it. Like mentioned before, that's what downvoting is for and it's much more effective since it doesn't boost the content like adding a comment does.
We take content quality seriously and while we haven't been able to eliminate reposts completely, we've made a lot of progress. For directly reposted content, we added the repost detector (https://devrant.io/rants/425054/...) and are still working to improve that and appreciate any feedback/ideas for it.
Like any community on the internet, devRant will always have some reposts and it will always have some content you really don't like. That's what comes along with being an open platform with very little moderation. We get requests to moderate more heavily, but we don't like censoring recent rants and don't plan to do that.
Most of the times people who repost content or an image didn't realize it was already posted. Not everyone uses recent sort and almost always they have no ill intent.
Anyway, feel free to let me know if you have any questions and feedback is always welcome.45
Introducing new Notif filters! Now on mobile, all your notifications are broken up into category tabs and you can clear each category separately. No more digging for mentions!
Also we just released a new image preview for when a rant is shared on FB, Twitter, etc. which includes the ranter's avatar image. You can see it by sharing a rant on social media, or check out an example here: devrant.com/rants/1036286/image.png (if you change the rant ID, you can see others)45
😎 = me, 💩 = client
💩: "I must emphasize that I'm on a tight schedule. I need this done in 2 weeks."
😎: I cut some features and take the job.
As agreed, I send a progress report at the end of the week to get feedback.
😎: He must be busy... I'll call him if he doesn't reply in a few days.
💩: *doesn't answer call*
😎: Time running out, still no feedback, I assume everything is fine and finish it a day before the deadline. Suddenly:
💩: "Hi, how's the project going?"
😎: "...good... WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN???"
💩: "Oh, I went on a quick vacation"
😎: *wants to die a quick and painless death*
"There's only like a day left..."
💩: "Right... Soo, here's the feedback you asked for"
*dumps 4 paragraphs of stupid nitpicking on me (rants following)*
😎: *wants client to die a slow and painful death*14
I wanted to post a note on devRant community etiquette and rule-breaking behavior we’ve been seeing lately to make clear it will not be tolerated. This is pretty much a rehash of this rant, https://devrant.com/rants/609739/... and also our official rules which I highly encourage people to read: https://devrant.com/rules
I’ve noticed an influx of a select group of members, mostly older users, expressing a distain towards other users or declaring content they dislike “shouldn’t be posted”, “please stop”, etc. If you find yourself about to post that, as per our rules, please don’t. It blatantly violates our rules and we are going to start cracking down on it much more. Whether you have 30k+ points or 10, we will apply the rules fairly to everyone and not give breaks to specific people, which admittedly I’ve done in the past.
If we see this behavior in rants/comments first we will give a warning (and the rant/comment will be deleted) and the next offense is a ban.
A valid question (even though I’ve answered it before) might be why does this need to be a rule? Simply put, it’s a rule for a number of reasons: posts like described try to inflict one’s will upon the entire community (even though we have a Democrat voting process...), they create confusion (almost every time they try to sound official, ex. “Stop doing this”), and beyond those two main reasons, they literally accomplish nothing because they offer no constructive methods of achieving what’s being requested, and only a fraction of the community will actually see it.
Here’s an example of what’s not allowed and what is allowed:
- Allowed: posting an issue on our GitHub issue tracker saying “I really dislike seeing this type of rant in my algo feed, here’s some ideas I have to improve the algo and add more personalization so I can see what I want.”
- Allowed: posting on GitHub issue tracker: “I found this awesome image similarly algo that I think can improve the ‘repost check feature’ - you guys should check it out and see if it might be good”
- Not allowed: “Omg stop shitposting windows update rants and Linux rants I hate them. Go post this type of rant because that’s what everyone really wants to see.”
One is constructive an the other is merely an opinion expressed as an enforcement of a self-made rule on the community and tries to tell other people how they should use devRant.
I cringe when people tell others how to use devRant because without fail when I see those posts, I go through that person’s rant/comment history and I nearly always see them using devRant in some kind of way I disagree with or isn’t exactly what I like to see. But that’s OK. I understand I’m not going to enjoy everything posted and I’m also not going to agree with everything posted. But I think it’s fair for those same people to then lecture on what isn’t appropriate to post on devRant, and it’s even more silly when their posts are sometimes irrelevant to development and the posts they are complaining about are relevant.
In the end, based on the large majority of feedback we get, we want to make devRant a place where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves and doesn’t have to think about possibly getting ridiculed every time they post and that don’t have people trying to dictate what kind of ideas they are allowed to post. We also realize there’s types of content people don’t enjoy, but telling others not to post it is not the solution. We will soon be launching post type filters that will make filtering rants by post type possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for reading.64
So my manager (a 29 y/o, who hardly can use a mac) walks towards me with a hint of panic in his eyes.
Manager: Hey commander keen, do you know how to use vertical look up in excel, I've tried, and looked at tutorials.
Me: yeah I really don't know excel (and not willing to learn, especially on the fly), I don't even have excel installed, I can write I script that does what you want.
Manager: No you have enough on your plate
3 hours later
Manager: hey I still can't figure it out, could you solve it with a script, won't that take to long
Me: no send me the files, Ill do it with a script.
I start writing 2 for loops and wait for the file, 10 ish minutes later its basicly done, just need to put in the column indexes.
I send a message on both slack channels (hey are you going to email or slack me the file)
After a hour I walk to his desk and again ask him for the file.
Manager a good 2 hours later on slack: Hey I just send you the file, I hope its not to much work, it has to happen asap.
So if you have kids, and they are not that bright by some kind of birth defect, don't worry, they can always become a manager.
But you can't get me down today. I hit 2000 upvotes and the employer is unknowingly a proud sponsor for reading and writing all these rants and comments :-) thnx devrant8
Working very quickly on the swearing word/sentence generator right now.
I'm scrolling through @AlexDeLarge's rants like there's no tomorrow xD11
Although there's been a lot of rants on Firefox Quantum, I'm going to add my experience anyways.
Just downloaded it on my laptop and netbook.
Motherfucker this thing is fast. No lag, pages load very freaking fast, consumes less ram than before and I fucking love the new interface!
Mozilla, you did a hell of a job!28
This is where everything started. I got the chance to work with actual production code. While it is very fun to work with, in some places it's also very frustrating. And this is from where, most of my rants come from.
Thank you @dfox and @trogus for making such a beautiful community.
The best part of this community is I never have to think or take time to make jokes or posts so that I can get upvotes. I've always wanted likes or retweets or reddit upvotes. But it never worked out because I have to think so much to make clever comments or posts. Most of the time, I gave up.
But in devRant, all I do is just share what's happening in my daily dev life. My frustrations, my happiness. That's all it takes. Everyone understands, everyone cares and everyone loves.
Over time, thanks to devRant, I've understood that I was part of the wrong community. This is the community that I deserve, this is the community that every dev deserves.
Thank you all. I love you. And I promise, more rants are coming :D
Especial thanks to @Yeah69 @kevbost @yarwest @tisaconundrum @Linux @donkeyScript . I have no idea why you guys all of a sudden rapidly upvoted me. Although I would love to reach 10k naturally but won't complain haha8
What If our Boss's read our Rants...
OH GOD NO!
What If they write there OWN rants about us?
Now im scared8
New phone, after using double-tap to upvote a rant devRant told me that I can upvote rants by double-tapping. No shit sherlock4
Welp, I just turned 18 :)
I joined this place when I was roughly 16. I spent nice 2 years here. :)
I saw more people join and have fun and not be toxic. I've made friends here and this community supported me like literally no one had before. I felt like when I was down, people listened and people answered. People wrote funny rants and posted memes which helped me out when I was sad and I didn't know how to rant about it. Everyone here is kind. Everyone here is cool.
I would like to thank you all for being here all this time and I hope to keep seeing all of you here for my next birthday :D9
I had a scrolling addiction on Facebook, then I installed devRant... I can say that I no longer have a scrolling addiction on Facebook... *No time for Facebook, must read all rants!*4
I am on DevRant for quite a while now and I really enjoy it here. The overall atmosphere is great, as well as the community. (Yes, that includes you!)
Since I came here I've learned some very valuable lessons regarding work (conditions), annoying coworkers and programming itself. I like to think of DevRant as a huge ball of experience by very talented people, as well as a great place for discussions about a topic we all love: code. But lately I am seeing more and more memes on here, with titles like "I think everybody know this", "I think everybody can relate" and "Soo true". Those posts have no value at all and are (most of the time) reposted from 9gag or similar networks. Sometimes those "rants" don't even have anything to do with devs anymore, but are only here to farm ++'es. In the beginning I really enjoyed funny "rants", but now the majority of them just annoy me. It becomes especially annoying when you see the same meme three times in 15 minutes.
I'd be in for some kind of DevFun section, where everybody is able to post his or hers jokes/memes/etc, but the current situation just really gets on my nerves.
I hope that I am not the only one who thinks like that, because I really feel uncomfortable ranting about something I actually love.
You can't imagine how many lines of pure and utter horseshit, seemingly written in PHP, I had to dig through this whole weekend. (relating to my 2 previous rants)
How is it even possible to write code this unbelievably ugly?
- includes within loops
- included files use variables from parent files
- start- and endtags separated to different files
- SQL queries generated by string concatenation, no safety measures at all (injection)
- repeating DB calls within loops
- multiple directories with the same code (~40 files), only different by ~8 lines, copied
- a mixture of <?php echo ... ?> and <?= ... ?>
- a LOT of array accesses and other stuff prefixed with "@" (suppress error messages)
- passwords in cleartext
- random non-RESTful page changes with a mixture of POST and GET
- GET parameters not URL-encoded
My boss told me it took this guy weeks and weeks of coding to write this tool (he's an "experienced dev", of course WITHOUT Git).
It took me only 20 hours and about 700 lines of code.
I must confess, since this task, I don't hate PHP anymore, I just simply hate this dev to death.
Addendum: It's Monday, 5:30am. Good night. 😉12
I know we agreed to stop the Windows 10 rants, but this fucker just crapped itself 20-ish minutes before a live video production. Had to run to the other building and steal a computer from the folks in the studio because this one would no longer boot.7
DevRant feels a lot like home. Not because I'm a pro developer - I'll probably never be one. But because I get to spend time with "my people". It's like when I went to Dreamhack for work and after 30+ years of being weird there were suddenly over four thousand people just like me.
There is no shortage of online IT culture but devRant is unique. It could have become the usual cesspool of hate, misogony, trolling but hasn't. Somehow it gives me hope to se a place meant for blowing of steam turning out to be one of the more respectful communities. So - thanks people! Your rants actually make my days a little better.12
Once upon a time while browsing his Instagram, a young and inexperienced boy found a magic realm called devRant.
He decided to hop on the cyberweb of interconected computers, aka. the Internet and found the gate to the magic realm.
Timidly he took a step forward and found himself surrounded by strange structures called Rants and Stories.
No knowing what to do, he now roams in this new and strange realm looking for some guidence and perhaps even friendship.27
I can not function today in my hot office (no AC). I'm just reading rants in JSON format to look like I'm working. I may need a USB Desk Fan to improve my productivity. Anybody have recommendations?8
I just had the most bizarre experience of my life. I handed in my resignation letter today. About an hour later, the CEO comes and collects me, takes me into his office, and rants about me leaving and other random not even tangentially related bullshit. Accusing me of not believing in the company and not talking to him. I have no idea if I'm fired.10
I just can't understand what will lead an so called Software Company, that provides for my local government by the way, to use an cloud sever (AWS ec2 instance) like it were an bare metal machine.
They have it working, non-stop, for over 4 years or so. Just one instance. Running MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, PHP and an f* Tomcat server with no less than 10 HUGE apps deployed. I just can't believe this instance is still up.
By the way, they don't do backups, most of the data is on the ephemeral storage, they use just one private key for every dev, no CI, no testing. Deployment are nightmares using scp to upload the .war...
But still, they are running several several apps for things like registering citizen complaints that comes in by hot lines. The system is incredibly slow as they use just hibernate without query optimizations to lookup and search things (n+1 query problems).
They didn't even bother to get a proper domain. They use an IP address and expose the port for tomcat directly. No reverse proxy here! (No ssl too)
I've been out of this company for two years now, it was my first work as a developer, but they needed help for an app that I worked on during my time there. I was really surprised to see that everything still the same. Even the old private key that they emailed me (?!?!?!?!) back then still worked. All the passwords still the same too.
I have some good rants from the time I was there, and about the general level of the developers in my region. But I'll leave them for later!
Is it just me or this whole shit is crazy af?3
When you start a new job as a Senior Developer, and start asking questions about the code, and you have these collections of conversations with other front-end people:
Random dev: No, it's done with Angular.
Me: I think we should add frontend pagination to this page. There will be too many elements on it if you're a customer with 2000 servers.
Random dev: Don't bother, there's no pagination in the API call... So that will not gain any performance.
Me: But it wouldn't take long to implement and it would improve the user experience, why would you want to show ALL the elements, when you have an option not to... Also, it WILL be a major performance hit, especially on mobile.
Random dev: People will use search anyway.
Also, there are no coding standards, every file looks different, and my opinion is being disregarded in everything, and I thought my last job was bad...
Seriously how are some people hired as front-enders?
Since I just took this job, I feel obligated to stay a couple of months... But hey, don't cry for me, I might have more rants for you. 😂
Sorry for the long rant, here's cake: 🍰5
So I wrote a py script that calculated the total no. of the word "fu*k" found in rants -
Here are the results have a look.
Although I expected more, since in every other rant people use the word "fu*k" :/
This is in context with my previous rant -
Update on my previous rants: finally got it working! after spending 2 days compiling the kernel and trying to fix some issues, I just reinstalled my laptop with a fresh antergos image, installed the kernel and both the speaker and headphones work just fine! no distortion, no weird chrome video speed ups, just works - it was probably just something I had installed ages ago to make external usb sound work.
I also used this opportunity to apply the missing grub theme and found this: https://gnome-look.org/content/... it's perfect with almost any custom background too.
Why is this a rant? well some asshat at gnome decided to remove the "global dark theme" option from tweaks, so now thousands of themes are broken if you want the dark theme, since the developers now have to offer the dark theme seperately, well numix-frost has had this reported since the 7th may and no response since, the hack to make it work is to replace the gtk.css with the dark equivalent gtk-dark.css for now..31
The live devRant AMA/event thingy is in a few hours I think?
Gotta go to sleep right fucking now.
Don't want to get spoiled by the rants tomorrow morning.
This means nearly a whole day of no devRant 😫.
Anyways, good luck dfox and trogus!8
Stackify published a fun devRant article in their blog where I highlighted some of my favorite rants: http://stackify.com/co-founder-davi...
Just to note - the rants in the article are in no particular order, it was too hard to actually order them so it's just random pretty much. I also unfortunately didn't have a full list to go trough, so I'm sure I missed a bunch of great ones. I gathered all of these pretty quickly, but they are still some of my favorites, amongst many others that are not included.3
New semester, new problems....
Just started my 6th semester at uni and my teammates are already proving to be serious dumbfucks..
They want to keep all files neat and organized, sure, fine, good idea.
They want to use Dropbox to store code and our LaTeX report, no, never! Somehow managed to get them to switch to GitHub, yay!
They want to have everything in one fucking repo! Why? Oh god, why? And I can't change their mind on this!
And they still want to use Dropbox to have a backup and sync between their machines...
So during this semester, we will store our LaTeX report and the, at minimum, 3 code projects, in the same repo organized by folder!
Why not one project, one repo? Then I won't have to pull all the shit code that I don't have to work with!
Expect more rants in the coming months...2
I decided to start a new web project tonight. I'm a serial starter-never-finisher, but I thought, "No @AnonymousGuy, you'll work on that android game that's genuinely almost releasable aside from the shitty makeshift UI you gave it while learning Unity."
Fuck yeah. Motivated, I picked up my laptop and put it on my lap. I grabbed my phone, opened DevRant, spent 2 hours reading rants, commenting, +1'ing, and looked down at my laptop. Put it back on the floor. I'm too tired now.
Fuck me and my total lack of self-discipline. 😑3
Got a question for the linuxers.
I'm a linuxer myself (no shit) but I don't really tweak a lot. Whenever I see those awesome arch setups with tiling wm's etc (https://devrant.com/rants/1902395/ for example), I would love to set that up myself but one thing:
Any idea on how I'd be able to run this well with 6 screens? I've got genuinely no clue.23
I don't want no sticker and no stressball, i just want to read some dev rants and design my devRant avatar3
So, after weeks of reading spicy rants from all of you, I finally decided to join your community ; even if I'm only a student, I've encountered some solid crap in my internships.
Let's go back in time bois. Two years ago, I started my first intership at a Fortune 500 company (this doesn't exists in France, but whatever, this is nearly the same category). I was supposed to build some file sharing system for the office. Before getting into it, I briefly thought aboyt what technos I could use to build it and make a sweet interface for my co-workers, in 10 weeks, and not a single another day.
> Nice team with devs that I could ask things about and learn solid tricks that would even amaze David Copperfield
> Having a nice dev environment
> Alone on this project
> No fucking dev environment, I had to build everything on Notepad
> No CI
> No SCM
> And, the worst, Ladies and Gentlemans,
I FUCKING HAD TO WORK IN A SINGLE FILE IN A CLOSED ENVIRONMENT.
NO WEBSERVER, NO DEDICATED SPACE.
I HAD TO REQUEST A SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENT IN A CLOSED CUSTOM CMS THAT WAS SERVING FILES, SO THIS FORMAT COULD BE READ ON FOLDER OPENING IN IE9 (FIREFOX FORBIDDEN).
YOU HAD TO MIX HTML, CSS AND JS IN A SINGLE FILE. NO SERVER-SIDE LANGUAGES, ONLY STATIC LINKS, NO FRAMEWORKS (if we can call jQuery, Bootstrap, Semantic UI and all these thinks "Frameworks").
> mfw at the end of the intership13
Looks like I'm destined to be fucked in the ass every time I'm on vacation...
This boss : https://devrant.com/rants/1330624/...
Told me he is gonna implement the new backend of a web app we have while I'm on vacation...
He was trying stuff with python for it and I tried to explain him the benefits of polymorphism and the ideas behind it and he was looking clueless, as always...
I'm screwed... Last time I went on vacation they started using react ( no complains ) and firebase ( fuck this shit ) ...
Now we are moving this web app away from firebase but I can see it is gonna be shit and a lot of rants will follow from his "back end" that this motherfucker here is gonna have to help implement after 2 weeks of fucked up code...5
Most programming shirts/hoodies really suck. They fall into two categories:
1. Super lame pun quotes in an ugly font.
2. Memes transfer-printed onto cheap fabric
I'm not against puns, or quotes. I quite like the design from @AlexDeLarge
https://devrant.io/rants/830390/, and I've been looking for a nice shirt with Dijkstra's "simplicity is a prerequisite for reliability" on it.
But many do not put any thought into beautiful design, and shit like "No place like 127.0.0.1", "404 girlfriend not found" or "There are 10 kinds of people" really stopped being funny a decade ago.
Good design, colors & quality are so fucking important.
What are your favorite dev-related clothes?16
Raise your hand up! *clapping intensifies*
Continued from the famous " i am a teen, no credit card " rant : https://devrant.com/rants/1592122/...6
You know what i hate? Applying to jobs and never getting feedback--if a polite "we didn't hire you because x and y" is too damn hard, i would still rather a royal refusal over not hearing anything back at all. It's happened to me 3-4 times in a row now, probably going to be 5 - 6 soon enough. Seriously though, what is this shortage of devs everyone talks about? Because here i am with both hands and a leg in the air high as i could manage and you're not even acknowledging me? I even made a small React SPA once to satisfy a company's questions and show a bit of my competence--you think i ever got a reply from them? Shit, i didnt even get an auto reply. And from what ive read here on others' rants, im far from being alone. At least i could understand why they dont look at me (Bahamian, no degree, never had a dev job, etc.), but for proven programmers to go unnoticed the way they do is ridiculous.7
Best co-worker quitting story?
"T" I've refereed to in previous rants knew he was close to being fired, so he jumped ship. 'T' sent the usual "I'll miss you guys" email to the department, except me (and a few others that didn't fall for his BS and not scared of him). His mistake was he sent the email out a day early (buddy forwarded me the email) and left the stuff (box of pics, books, etc) he planned on taking with him. One item in particular was a new company provided laptop bag, which technically wasn't his to keep (supposed to leave/turn-in any company provided equipment), so I grabbed the bag and hid it.
The next day I heard him slamming drawers (looking for the bag) and a loud cursing. Other devs peeking over the walls asking what's wrong.
Dev1: "Dude, what's up? Whatcha' looking for?"
T: "Nothing...fuck!...damn it...nothing...assholes...fucking assholes!"
Dev2: "Who's the ass? What's wrong?"
Dev3: "Need help looking for something?"
T: "No..no...nothing...I'm fine...making sure I don't forget anything."
'T' never found out who took the bag and I've had that laptop bag underneath my desk ever since.5
Several rants ago I promised to drop a bombshell about Android. What took me so long was my research.
I wanted to measure the extent of Google’s background data mining. I put Android at a significant disadvantage — it was Redmi 6, a device with a 5-year-old half-dead battery that was heavily used by my partner. The only change was me installing Lineage OS + microG — a private, degoogled combo that has no quality of life ramifications. Google Play Store opens, apps download. MicroG emulates Google Play Services — maps, banking and other Play Services-dependent apps work flawlessly. This made a huge difference.
Before degoogling, this phone lasted one day tops on standby. Now, with Wi-Fi connection enabled, apps auto-update working (one game I had installed auto-updated during the test), and no battery saver engaged, I was able to pull ELEVEN DAYS on full charge. Battery saver promised even more uptime, but I considered that cheating.
Modern phones have modern screens that drain battery quickly. Yet, they also have 4000+ mAh batteries. If your Android smartphone performs worse than mine in a test like this that doesn't use screen, kiss your privacy goodbye.32
Continuation of rant https://devrant.com/rants/975261/...
I PASSED THE TEST!!!!! YEAHHHHH
Now only an interview left. Please....
If i fail this interview, no more tries.
Wish me luck.
From this point, all personal projects and requests will stop.6
I'm looking for my first job as a web developer. I kept seeing these rants about how horrible and frustrating job searching is, all of which I thought were greatly exaggerated. They're all just jokes and memes, right?
Every fucking meme seems to be true.
- Junior developer with +4 years of experience, expert in their field - check!
- Listing requirements for 6 different jobs under "Full-stack developer" - check!
- "Expert developer required ASAP" - $10/hour - check!
- 100% remote ... *scrolls all the way down* ... for 2 days of the week - check!
- Entry level font-end position - must be an expert in Vue, Angular, React, AWS, Drupal, Wordpress, PHP, Python, ES9+, OOP, TDD, BDD - check!
- "Cool" description written in js code with no indentation - check!
And I'm not seeing these every once in a while or something like that. No. Most of the posts are like this. I thought I may just be underqualified since I've never had a real job before, but this just seems crazy to me...4
It’s sooo weird.
I’m generally not feeling happy or good or “okay”, I’m almost always rather shitty but just keep going through my day without complaining too much because that’s what most of us do..
Today, for the first time in at least one (very lonely, cold and boring) year, I went outside for a smoke and felt good. No idea why.
Everything was orangy/yellowish outside because of the clouds after the first sunny day in weeks.
Its raining slightly but not so much that you actually get wet.
I just had this feeling of “yea, that’s good enough” which I haven’t had in probably 4-5 years or so.
Maybe it’s because I got a little bit of sun for once and saw other people walking 2m around me, I don’t know..
But it felt good.
Does that feeling sound familiar to anyone or am I just finally going crazy?
I also apologise for my last 50 rants not being about dev or rant but I’m lucky to not have much to rant about in my current job 😅10
Well, well, well, my new year's gift:
Someone is jamming thousands of requests per second, and NO firewall. JWT tokens that expires in 3 HOURS.
Now MORE THAN 40K stolen.
But, where did it come from? https://devrant.com/rants/4961285/...16
Some of y'all talk way too much shit about web development tools/libs without being web devs yourselves......
I don't know enough about OS development to talk shit, you see me doing it? no
fk me I am getting so fucking fed up with this community, it used to be cool rants about the shit that we go through, now is just pop wannabe dev ranting meme bullshit39
I seriously do not understand the rants against Windows.
I love Windows 10 (got as free upgrade from MS), and have no issues with MacOS or Linux OS. I use them as well but do all serious work on Windows.
All my life, I have worked on business / commercial side and picked up Web development in last couple of years. I started using computers on DOS in 1992, and shifted to Windows 3.0 in 1995. There was no Mac or MacOS back then.
For serious work, I purchased a old Dell Precision M4700 workstation grade laptop with quad-core i7, at throwaway price, got 32GB RAM, 2.4TB (1x2 TB + 400gb) of SSD on super sale online, and installed it myself. It easily supports dual 4k monitors.
Git-bash on windows allows all the necessary linux command line on windows. Though not tried, Windows 10 allows embedded Ubunutu with linux terminal. Web development tools like - VSCode, git, github / bitbucket clients, NVM/Node, React / Redux / Webpack / Gatsby / Jest, REST clients, GraphQL client and server, Graph Server, Chrome PWA / Chrome Dev Tools, http/Websocket/WebRTC interception, Google Firebase SDKs, AWS sdks, cloud utilities, CI/CD tools work flawlessly. Windows even has its own package manager for applications.31
Wordpress does not suck. If you know how to work it.
Past period I saw so many rants on WP. My rant is that it is not 100% WP fault. Yes there are seriously structural problems in WP but that does not mean you cannot create top-notch websites.
At my work we create those top-notch WP sites. Blazing fast and manageable. Seriously we got a customer request to make the site slower because it loaded pages to fast (ea; you hardly could see you switched pages).
- We ONLY use a strict set of plugins that we think are stable, useful.
- We have everything in composer (and our own Satis) for plugins.
- We use custom themes & classes. Our code is MVC with Twig.
- In our track history we have 0 hacked websites for the past 2 years.
- Everything runs stable 24/7
- We have OTAP (testing, acceptance & production environments)
- We patch really fast
These are sites going from $15k++ and we know our shit.
Don't hate on WP if you have no clue what you are doing yourself.
That is my rant.23
Deadline is tomorrow as per this rant
I taught my boss how to work his way around spring-boot + maven + jpa, I did a really good job with the classes and interfaces so he could update the project while I was on my two week vacation.
I set up CI/CD so no one should have to ssh into servers to make master branch live and I set up webhooks on gitlab to warn me on slack if anyone pushed any code.
Tomorrow is the deadline.
Tomorrow is the last day of my vacation.
No pushes made to gitlab, hence no deployment trigerred.
I'm here wondering if the fucker will push it on the last minute just to fuck it up tremendously.
Tomorrow I'm going to the movies and gonna turn my phone off :)4
It's nice to make posts/rants in a community that embraces the developer life. Too many normies on my Facebook or other social media platforms, no one understands or can relate to what I post there. Anyways, glad I found devRant.
So... remember my first rants about my network at my last ship?
Well... I had to visit them for an unrelated matter and found out that they are to pass general inspection the next week. Among the inspectors is a member of the cyber defence team. I took a quick look at the network, finding the things I'd expect:
- No updates passed to the server or installed since I left
- No antivirus updates since I left
- All certificates were expired
- Most services were shut down or unused
- All security policies were shut down
- Passwords (without expiration now) were written on post-it and stuck on screens
- ... and more!
I told the XO (the same idiot that complained about them CONSTANTLY) and he just shrugged me off and told me to """fix""" it. In one fucking afternoon.
I. SHIT. YOU. NOT.
The new admin there is a low ranking person who hasn't the faintest idea of how this works, and isn't willing to learn, either. They just dumped the duty on him, and he seems not to care. The cyber security inspector is going to have a field day. Or get grey hairs.
I told the XO that I needed at least a week to get them into working order (I have to re-set up my virtual Windows 2012 R2 server, download 2 years' worth of updates, repair 2 years of neglect etc.). The answer was what I expected:
"You know computers, you can do your magic and get it done in an afternoon."
Thank god I got transferred and don't have to answer to that idiot any more. Now, popcorn time, as I watch the fireworks.
Yes, I am a vengeful guy. I have told them, twice now, of what would happen. They didn't listen. At least now, with an official report on their heads, they just might.4
How to check devrant in the office.

Lots of stress and strain the last months private and at work.
Headache all the days and no time to get back to my self. Programming starts to get tedious.
Now changing my life completely.
Broke up with my girlfriend and started looking for a new work - finally got a new contract today.
Dismissal coming on Monday.
3 months to go to get a enjoyable life.
PS: lurking some months and finally created an account. Thanks for all the rants which let me smile!3
I feel like a stalker now... or I invented a better Algo. Just show me the rants from the people I've followed and also the ones they've +1'd.
Sorry @sirwindfield for making u the example, but hey ur on devrant.io anyway...
But I guess this was the Twitter feature that no one wanted... o well... that's why I program, I can do whatever I want :)10
Note that the example tags for rants includes Xcode... There is a reason.
In 1984 Apple introduced Macintosh and we got a computer that could barely handle multiple windows on the screen. But by 1986 multiple windows all over the place.
In 1985 Microsoft introduced Window 1.0 Yes boys and girls, no "s" because it hand only one Window. 7 years later in 1992 Microsoft got their head out of their ass and produced "MDI" or Multiple Document Interface and woohoo, had multiple windows on the screen... big boy pants 8 years after Mac.
Today we have Xcode from Apple. The old Window 1.0 engineers are apparently alive and well as Xcode is a One Window Trick Pony and if you fight with it, it starts randomly jamming your separate Windows into tabs into one window, completely fucking up your spatial organization of your working source code.
It is like the bastards going into a blind man's house and re-arranging his furniture for fun.
Xcode - it's only free if your time is worth absolutely nothing.5
That is my first...well, rant? No, not at all.
I found this community by accident. I was looking for something like this, but did not realize til now. I scrolled through some posts and it is awesome to read awesome stories and rants from awesome people.
I am a 21 year old SAP ABAP developer from Germany. I have finished my bachelor's degree (business informatics/business information management? German: Wirtschaftsinformatik) last August. I have always been interested in web development and teached myself some php basics when I was younger. I would love to do more things like that, but things have changed. There are lots of different frameworks, languages and stuff. It's complicated.
I am not sure if I have understood how this community works, but I am very excited to find out.
And, as I already mentioned, I am German. So please feel free to bash my shitty English. :D25
@AleCx04 Texas was originally settled by closeted homosexuals who didn't "need"* to gaze upon the female form. It is not surprising that you have no desire for it in it's most charming state. (*"there's only steers and queers here" --famous observation regarding texas)
>"Touch some fucking grass you fucking neckbeards"
Contrasts with a quip from your parents/grandparents time "When there's grass on the field, play ball"
The current state of "whites" in texas: spherical people who will be extinct soon.
The mexicans, who breed much younger than you, will overtake you.
And yes I know you will delete this message. I guess the nobility were right about peasants like you. And yes: I've been to your state.10
When my company signs a contract with employees, they put the income as minimum wage, and verbally agree with him that they'll pay the rest of the income (which is about 3 times the minimum wage) as extra work, so they wont pay a lot for taxes. The employee has no choice but to accept.
But when the pay time comes, the company will only pay the minimum wage, making employees unable to sue.
This ultimately causes employees doing things like moving all project files to pen drives, telling the CEO about it, making the CEO run after them to the streets begging for the pen drive, and when he finally softens and gives them the drive, they open the zip files inside it to see (I shit you not) images of people flipping the bird.
Or this: https://devrant.com/rants/1332501/...12
Continuation of https://devrant.com/rants/642962/...
You are the decryption key to my encryption,
No one can access my heart except you.
You are the loop in my life,
I always keep coming back to you.
You are my nodemon,
You are always watching over me.
You are the / to everything I do,
Am nothing without you and I will always preserve you.
You are my increment operator,
You add value to my life.
To be continued 😉3
Warning: Long rant ahead!
So we built an amazing system for managing swarms of drones, and we have flown hundreds of hours, testing, etc.
Comes a client and says, that he wants to buy our system, but he wants to integrate it in a bigger system that is supposed to orchestrate many small systems.
Sounds like a deal.
So they send me on a week course (see previous rant: https://devrant.com/rants/2049071/...) to learn how to integrate our system in theirs.
I was sure that they have some API or something and it should be a breeze. but apparently they give us an SDK that includes all their files, and we have to build and run their entire system, and then build our own API inside of it!
And the reason we needed a week-long course, was to know all the paths where the XML configuration files exist!
So for the last month, I am hacking away inside this huge program, navigating thousands of files in a language I don't know, in order to build an API for their system, so that I can use it on our side.
Yesterday they informed us that a new version is available.
And sure enough, waiting in my inbox this morning was a link to download a new SDK.
No Changelog, No Instructions, Just a zip file with over 25,000 files.
So I phone my contact in their company to ask how exactly I am supposed to update their files, and his answer was: diff them!
WHAT! 25,000 files, half of them built by the c++ compiler, tens of configuration files scattered in different places, linking all the new libraries from scratch, are they crazy or what?
And then he tells me that they are working for 15 years this way. That's why everyone hates them I guess.
going to have a long day...
P.S. many more rants to come from this integration.5
Devrant and pickpockets
A week ago on Tuesday was heading to meet my client for a demo presentation.Once in town and few metres from our meeting point thought of checking some few rants only for my device to be snatched from my hands and the pick pocket sublimes away.
I composed myself and went to the agreed meeting point only not to meet my client and they was no way I would reach out to him. After making few rounds waiting for him finally gave up and headed for home.
Fast forward I made a resolution not to get a new device till a week ends and had to roll back to a simple device till today.
With today being the D-day I did head to my carrier to get a new device and once the phone was being set up the customer care agent asks which app do you need set up.With no hesitation I gladly say DevRant and she got no idea what's that then after some explaining she says all give it a try with a smile.
I later leave the store a happy man with DevRant being the first app on my device as I ran stock android.
Glad to be back family.1
So... I’m sitting here doing pretty much nothing, just reading through some rants when all of a sudden I get a wave of emails.
We noticed a login from a new device or location and want to make sure it’s you.
Device: Firefox, Windows 8
Where: New Jersey, United States (Approximate)
OhhhhhKay then... so there’s a couple of problems with this, 1 I didn’t even know I had a Pinterest account, 2 I don’t have Pinterest in my password manager either.
So I follow the link and fair enough it’s actually pintest, so I attempt to login, to no avail, oh maybe it’s a social login..., ok let’s try google, nope that wasn’t it, deletes account, logins with Facebook, oh here we go, checks logins, 1 random jersey player, deletes account, swaps to Facebook, changes password (this fucker was already 100+ characters) and adds 2FA and contains no new logins 🤔
Ok... so what the fuck, either someone managed to get through a long ass password or something phishy is going on, the email for FB logins is seldomly used (maybe a handful of services at best) as I have another for all the junk and spam bullshit I expect from today’s “marketing”2
As a follow-up to my comment on this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1029538 I want to share with you my new project: BinToBmp!
It converts any file into a beautiful bitmap image illustrating all bytes as pixels. Each byte indicates an index to a color table (very happy bitmap makes it this simple).
Useful? No. Fun to make? Hell yeah!
Take a look at it on my github page:
Print your favorite song and hang it on the wall or make a shirt from your latest compiled application. So many possibilities!
More infos in the readme.
Updates coming soon :)
P.S.: The image displays the converted jar.30
Last October, I was feeling really lost as a student. I posted a rant here (https://devrant.com/rants/1812123/...) as I had no one to talk to. I got a little support, but the advice I got really meant a lot to me.
I buckled up, did some learning and a small project, and today I am the NLP intern at an Organization that has really reputed clients.
Thank you devrant. Thanks everyone.
Necessary context for this rant if you haven't read it already: https://devrant.com/rants/2117209
I've just found my LUKS encrypted flash drive back. It was never stolen.. it somehow got buried in the depths of my pockets. No idea how I didn't look into my jacket for the entire time since that incident happened... But I finally found it back. None of my keys were ever compromised. And there's several backups that were stored there that have now been recovered too. Time to dd this flash drive onto a more permanent storage medium again for archival. Either way, it did get me thinking about the security of this drive. And I'll implement them on the next iteration of it.
For now though.. happy ending. So relieved to see that data back...

One too many rants on Windows Update and the apparently endless ways to somehow turn off enough parts of it to no longer consider it a nuisance — and mostly neglecting to remember how to turn it back on or run it manually...
This of course lends a lot of room for bitching about Windows being unsecure and and outdated :o
Unfortunately the good people at NoVirusThanks have recently released the tool you've all been waiting for — no need to cry any longer because Microsoft's monthly release schedule means you have updates every time you bimonthly "have to" use Windows:
Win Update Stop — as simple as pictured: http://novirusthanks.org/products/...
It even comes in a portable version and support all the way back to XP!18
Episode 2 of this rant: https://devrant.io/rants/851636/...
PM went to meet with the provider and came back, so I had a talk with the PM and it went like this:
Me: so how did the meeting go? Hope they corporate with you
PM: *in a sarcastic voice* Bro, you need be a good dev, they told me only a good dev can implement Master Card API calls, and its all in the docs. That's all they told me, so you should know how the meeting went
Me: *there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail* Fine bro, I'll go back to school and come back after 12 years.
Seriously when I send the provider the request and the body and all they tell me is: You have an error, Id must be unique but they fail to point out the exact error or at least send me a valid ID to test, how does this make me the bad dev and him the genius that can run Apple, Google, MS all together at once!
What is even worse, when I called the provider he told me: Man transaction ID must always be unique, how could you not know this, how is Mastercard supposed to differentiate between transactions!!
But hey, no one told me transaction id must be unique, primary keys are never unique, like DUH!10
Woow when you remember those days when there were no weekly rants and now you saw 22 weeks woow and in this time became like person who know how i feel in problem and fuck they can help better then other and best of it they are programmers so they know how hard is it its been awesome with you and i know it will be even better with you. And i think everybody here would say " @dfox @trogus thanks for this community"; devRant is just fucking awesome everybody knows how you feels when you have those fucking bugs in code.
In the wk83 rants I noticed that users mostly upvote posts that say "I have no friends" instead of posts that actually talk about the week subject.
Are you envious or what?7
So two mini rants rolled up into one
1) programmers who can code in 8292 languages but don’t know shit about the business side and think they know better than the business folks when it comes to big picture decisions, please go fuck yourself.
2) People who respond to “Gotta set up a few machines for non tech folks” with “Oh you should try Linux, it’s so user friendly”. You need to go fuck yourself. You have no idea what you’re talking about and probably lack empathy too you rotten squid smelling cumsock.15
My rants have been too long lately. Have some distilled ire instead.
Fuck computer gremlins.
Fuck non-deterministic BS.
Fuck shit working the third fucking time I try it with no changes in between.
Fuck ExecJS laoding only half the time
Fuck RubyMine for fucking up seven times a fucking day.
And fuck this dev environment!
I just want to fucking work!
So, I'm living in a completely computer illiterate family and I was called to help my father with something on a Laptop where he wanted to stream his favorite Soccer-Club.
So I walk up to him, ask what's wrong, and he says (roughly translated from German) "That thing doesn't work!"
And I'm just like ((Wat u mean))
So I ask him to explain the problem in detail.
Apparently his streaming service wasn't loading his stream.
Well damn I say, try searching for the problem on Google and find a solution.
((But no no no imma just call my son for everything that's freaking wrong with tech, he sure knows what to do))
As I'm not that experienced with Webservices as of yet, I had no idea what to do.
He was fucking furious!
"You always act like you know everything about tech and programs and stuff and can't even help me with fixing this Stream-Thing?!"
I responded simply by saying "It's not my area of work!"
Seems like he didn't know the difference between TECH-JESUS and hobbyist software engineer.
So I stand there and he just goes on one of these typical boomer tech illiterate rants, of which I'm sure you can imagine enough being on this platform.
tl;Dr; It pisses me of big time how people are not even trying to understand technology, nor attempting to help themselves by eG. Googling some simple problem, but rather just ask around and then being pissed off if the asked person just doesn't know the answer or can't help!5
I just read two rants with round about 40 fucking inside.
No I feel better after a fucking shit day.
Want to say thank you for your fucking good rants.
Sometimes I see rants about issues that are somewhat in my domain, and I think about replying something that might be useful. But then I check other rants by those users, and there is a bunch of weird slang that requires me to turn to Urban Dictionary, mixed with overwhelming amount of edginess and paranoia, and I'm like - no, I'll pass on that one.5
Browsing devRant at night is like refresh rants every second cause you seen and ++ the good rants and then no more rants are made. So you need to wait until morning.1
I get kicked out of my fucking house because my house”mates” just pissed off without paying rent or finding someone to replace them in time.
Great.. really fucking awesome.
There’s nothing else available in my town and I have time till the end of the month.
Thanks for that asshole.
Never, ever sharing a house / apartment again.
I’m better off doing my own thing.
Fucking lonely as I’m used to be but at least there’s no one to stab me in the back.1
I'm super divided.
I really want to spread devRant at the office, cause no one should miss out on this! But at the same time they might notice my rants about them.
Not sure of devRant is broken, or there's really been no rants for an hour 🤔
So what's everyone up to?10
Me: Boss you told me to come and talk to you regarding my performance on Monday but you went on leave.
Boss: I said that out of frustration. I forgot that you have already resigned so no use saying anything to you.
Its time fooooooooooor:
Good spend 8 hours of thinking where the fuck did it go wrong while compiling Android.
Idk but i always say to myself that maybe this time it will be different.
Im always wrong.
But maybe it will be different this time.
I hope for no Error and just clean build.
Ahhhh lets do it. Cant let users wait any longer.
And yes this is one of those Haxk20 Android angry rants.5
After lots of interviews and waiting and hard work just got something similar to my dream job.
I am so happy. Thanks for all your success rants they gave me the motivation to keep going when it seems there was no hope.
Remember everyone just keep going, keep trying, keep pushing.
Fuck. I'm fucking alive. The past month or so has been hectic. I've mainly been working, sleeping, or at school (not like I've showed up much lately anyways, maybe 12 days or so since the middle of February).
I'm fucking tired.
Bought an FX 8350 with the Wraith cooler for my desktop, got it for $70 when normally it's about $140 or so. Gonna replace the PSU and case when I get paid on Saturday, cause I don't have to pay anything with this check, so it's all to myself. Cut myself putting a heatsink back on my motherboard, still hurts 3 days later.
My "best friend" is still not talking to me. But she's been talking ABOUT me. Oh well. Nothing I can do about it now. I'm done with the whole situation with her. It's just her crying over every little thing.
My rants tend to be about my personal life, and this one is no exception. I just have a lot of shit going on and I need to get it out sometimes.1
Yesterday, no packages update for 14 days. Things get eerily quiet. Today....
Followup To https://devrant.com/rants/1755623/...3
My developer career has ended before I even start. After failing to get a job, I have started a business men services company. Maybe in the future, I will include software development to the business. So no more rants from my side at least for one year.
Fuck you all fucking retarded companies who wants junior developers with the same experience of senior developers.6
> be me
> started using greentext on devrant a while ago
> semi successful rants
> people start using greentext too
> be happy
> no one knows I started it
> maybe it wasn't even me
> sit in shower
> try not to cry
> cry a lot
Shit. That's not a rant about coding
> fuck microsoft1
Public feature request: If we tap at "devRant", the feed refreshes. Can we have the same thing for rants? My shitty internet at home is fast, but choppy so when I check my notifications and it doesn't load the rant, I have pretty much no idea what that notification was about.2
It's rant time!
So, as a broke electrical engineering student, I got this job in a local company. They used JSF and my skills in java were, at the very least, small (former PHP developer). But as a self taught developer this didn't stopped me and I went full on java learning (very bad year for my EE studies).
I became the 'guy in charge' for several of their projects (yeah, they did exploited broke students, I realized this far too late). I was very proud of myself, I worked hard, showed my true value, and they became impressed.
One nice thursday night, my "handler" emailed me with a urgent request. They needed an entire jsf application done by monday and the requirements were fairly complex.
Oh boy, I had a total of 10h of sleep from thursday to monday. I didn't even slept before going to my monday class, but I delivered the system. Got an pat in the back... "you're awesome"... I was happy.
6 months later: I received an email asking to fix a bug in the system. No problem with that. Oddly, this bug was a MAJOR bug. There's no way the system worked properly for six months with it. I fixed it in no time and commited the changes.
Turns out that this was the first time the system was going to be deployed. They made me go in an insane weekend dev project, and didn't even used the system for SIX MONTHS!!! I started to work my way out the company after this, aiming to open my own software company.
I still remember some other rants from the time I worked there. But these are for later.
Nice week for you all, may the sprint go gently and the clients be kind.1
I never use linux, we are entirely on windows everything at work...i'm a .net guy, and all my home stuff is on windows too. But, I have to take a linux class so I got ubuntu going on a virtual box. Prompt for updates comes up (shit, here we go. on a virtual machine with hardly any resources allocated to it no less, better get comfortable). Hit install and it's done before I can even finish shitting my pants in shock at its speed. Seeing all these "linux is better" rants in a slightly different light already, and looking forward to poking around with it7
almost a year ago, i have no idea of what i was doing at work cause everything was new: coding languages, databases, clients, co-workers, etc. i had 0 experience and i am back here again on devRant after 3836382 years and i am proud to say i've learnt so much and have been promoted to Project Manager. im happy asf and i am now ready for another round of dev rants!14
I have selected the algo mode for sorting .
Idk why but my feed is a little too full with rants I have already ++'ed . I am coming across the same rants multiple times, for days. Despite refreshing nothing happens.
I mean I can change the sorting mode for fresh rants but I suggest the algorithm be improved in a way that rants that have been upvoted or commented on by the user, no longer exist in the feed after refresh.
If this already exists then I am probably experiencing a bug, so I'd like to report that.10
I just want to say,
wow the Cloudflare API is awesome.
In less then an hour (from a blank file - to automation and tested) I was able to setup a DDNS task that basically just pulls my public ip (see https://devrant.com/rants/2050450/... for details) comparing it to the current DNS records for and update them if anything has changed in the past 30 minutes.
So kudos to these guys letting me in next to no time having a simple yet elegant way of dealing with my missing static ip.
Why can’t all APis be this simple?3
What happened to the warm welcome that new users received back in the day? Now when someone posts their first rant people bash on details and give them no chance. I remember posting half-dumb rants, but no one gave me shit for that. It takes time to grow into a community, you can't just expect people to behave identically to the rest. Makes me a bit disappointed to be fair.9
Unfortunately, I was causing the bad experience of the group project.
Had a 3D modelling class at university. I was totally overwhelmed and had no time to do anything for the project. I was too scared to face my team so I decided to just break the contact and didn't show up to the presentation.
I thought I would get a bad grade and that I will have to take the class the next year again.
But the worst part is, I got a better grade than the rest of the team because someone did the part, I was responsible for, so well.
I felt so bad for my behaviour, I cut my hair and shaved and hoped they won't recognize me at the university.
I'm sure there are or will be some rants about me this week -.-'3
I hereby officially revoke my rant on Paint.NET:
After some review I've gotta say, despite its shortcomings it is pretty good for what it is.
So yeah, gonna own that error in judgement.
(Eclipse still sucks though. No error there.)2
I've seen some rants about people complaining about websites using the 'www' subdomain, so I'd like to take this opportunity to try to explain my opinion about why sites might use it.
I use to feel the same way about not having the www subdomain. It felt like an outdated standard that serves no purpose. But I have changed my option...
Sometimes certain servers have other services running other than just the website, such as ssh, ftp, sql, etc., running on different ports. What if you want to use a web proxy and caching service similar to cloudflare or a cdn? We'll you can't, because they won't allow traffic to flow through to your other ports.
That's where the www subdomain comes in. Enable your caching and cdn on your www subdomain, and slap a 301 redirect from your primary domain on port 80 or 443 to the www subdomain. This still allows you to access your other services via the domain name while still gaining the benefits of using a cdn.
Now I know you could use an 'ftp' subdomain or the like, but to each their own in that regard.7
Remember this one?
Yesterday I got promoted which is great, I know that I’m appreciated.
The job is really good, I enjoy every day at work..
My darling, my love, my car (I named her Monroe)..
In the Morning i got promoted and in the evening I fucking blew up her engine..
I think it’s the balance in the universe.
I think I never enjoyed any car as much as I enjoyed her.
Her smell, her bitchyness, her looks...
I hope she’ll Rest In Peace.
Gotta find something that compares to her now which is gonna be a challenge. I used to drive her every evening and every Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, that’s how I spent my personal time.
Many of you won’t get me I guess.. cars are my hobby, my passion, a very important part of my life. For the last 5 years used to own at least 2 cars at once, now I own 0..😔
No idea what I should do with my free time now, there’s nothing I’m Passioned about besides cars..2

The burnt remnants of my ID card's authentication information, waiting for the wind to come pick it up. It's stored in my password database now and committed to my git server, as it should be. Storing PIN and PUK codes on paper, whatever government cunt thought thought that that was a good idea...
If you've got identification papers containing authentication information like PIN and PUK codes, by all means add them to your password manager (if you're using Linux, I'd like to recommend GNU Pass) at once and burn the physical version. There's no reason why you'd want those on paper, unless you store your passwords on a post-it too.
At least that's as much as me and possibly you as citizens can do. Our governments are doomed anyway, given the shitty security policy they have, and likely the many COBOL mainframes still in use today. Honestly, the meddlings of Russia with the US elections doesn't seem too far-fetched, given this status quo. It actually surprises me that this kind of stuff doesn't happen more often, given that certain governments hire private pentesters yet can't secure their own infrastructure.
Boss: Why are you trying to build the old program?
Me: Because I need to determine behavior of why old program works with data that new program does not.
Boss: Does it affect the output?
Me: No, but...
Boss: STOP! Just filter it.
Boss: Go write new fun code, not work on old shit.
Me: Thank you for saving me from myself.
In reference to:
It's interesting to me... a lot of the rants I see here are all like "just started this new job and this place is SO fucked". Talking about how there's no process, no source control, terrible code, etc.
I say it's interesting because most of the time the thought that goes through my head is "that sounds fun as hell!"
Like, spend as many years at a place as I have, a place where there's SO much process and SO many controls and all of that... you know, the whole "big enterprise" mindset... and the idea of being able to come in to a place that's kind of wild west and actually work to FIX the place, to have freedom to change direction and innovate and not be locked in to all sorts of rules, is kind of exciting.
(you know, assuming it's a place and a position where that's possible at all... but at this point in my career, I'd only take a position where I had that kind of authority from the start, and as long as I have the authority then I'm happy to take on the responsibility and I'm up for the challenge)8
Rant Mode: ON
Do you know what really grinds my gears? Those dreaded "404 Page Not Found" errors. It's like a digital black hole, sucking your users into a vortex of frustration.
And don't get me started on inconsistent coding standards. It's like trying to decipher hieroglyphics written by different ancient civilizations. Why can't we all just follow the same conventions?
Oh, and software updates that break everything! You spend hours perfecting your code, only for a new update to come along and wreak havoc. It's like the universe is conspiring against developers.
But hey, despite the rants, we developers are a resilient bunch. We thrive on solving problems, no matter how infuriating they can be. So, here's to the endless debugging, the endless coffee, and the endless love-hate relationship with coding. We wouldn't have it any other way.
Rant Mode: OFF
Phew, that felt good. Thanks for letting me vent!6
Oh I've had loads (and still have) of projects that got me to learn cool stuff! To keep them separate, I'll post some in different rants.
The thing that has helped me most over time (it didn't teach me cool things but it's very useful in general) is that, when api's have rare limits and you need/want to use them more often than is really allowed: you write your own alternatives.
I've especially had this with a geoip api's. Needed one for nearly every project but hit the rate limits with every goddamn service.
Wrote my own in a weekend and no rate limit hitting since then!3
Small update to this rant
A classmate of mine lend me his old laptop with an SSD and an HDD and I could install Ubuntu Budgie on it and use it while my laptop is under repairment. The thing is, this temporary laptop is pretty awesome and fast and the fact that I don't have to deal with all the NVidia proprietary drivers and other gaming laptop bs makes me pretty happy
Update to the story above: the HDD of the temporary laptop died (didn't have anything important on it, so no problem). But I must be going through some bad omen tech times, since, beside my laptop and this HDD dying, my cooking plate, inflatable mattress, some sockets and lightbulbs broke inside my apartment. Hail!
Do u remember when i posted this shit 3 days ago?
Guess fucking what.
May 4 2019, Fucking beautiful day, happy blissful i complimented everyone, i told my friends I appreciate them, my sister hooked me up with her hot female friend and that hot female friend I shit you not started showing me a porn game she plays on her Android phone because her sister works in game development company and they coded that porn game, then i got a new item, set up a deal with other stuff, studied. Same day 11:58pm, i was happy.
May 5, 2019. 12:01am. My sister texts me her hot female friend is very smart and she has a bf so she told me not to even try. Some retard on ig started provoking me for no reason. Etc etc and this day just fucking started.
Jesus F Christ.....
Pray for me to survive this day.... What can i even say...5
Apparently I'm surrounded by morons...
For the past 7 days since I was ordered to learn react wich originated this rant https://devrant.io/rants/805055/...
I somehow know more of it then my team that is on it for the past month or more.
Looks like the "standard" is to pass refs everywhere instead of proper props/state utilization.
At first I was confused by the usefulness and credibility of it but after a literal 1 fucking minute google search I found it to be a bad practice discouraged even by official docs.
Wtf? No one read the docs?2
Sorry, is TL, but humbly think is worth to read.
Coworker: Hey, our mail is being redirected to our client's spam folder. What did you do?
Me: Sorry, but I have no control over that.
Boss: I happened to me also. Something is wrong with our mail server.
Me: I'll check, but this is really out of my control.
Rushed to my station... domain blacklist check...Fuuuuuuuu! We been blacklisted! What in the fucking damn hell happened?????!!!
Mail server log check....Mmmm...WTF is this shit?
Devilish grin in my face....muahahahaaa! Your ass is MINE!
So, my "I know everything" new coworker ( https://www.devrant.io/rants/193238 ) used his account to send over 6300 messages a couple of times over a period of 4 hours. By our boss request we have no limit on our servers...
Gotcha! I'm going to get your ass fired!
(BTW: The pic is Gotcha the Cockatoo)4
Just going to combine my rants;
Gotta love when random updates just break everything, the auto tag rename plugin in vscode breaks the css intellisense plugin, after one of them updated sometime recently.
Synergy 2 is such a trash piece of software, its incredible how they are so bold to even demand money for that, they are just abusing the fact that Synergy 1 is so good and popular.
The edge detection is non-existent, theres no settings at all anymore to add dead corners, it never actually acks the receiver so it's forever in the loading state, even though its connected, the mouse is twitchting if it goes from one desktop to another, you have to literally smash your mouse across the room to be able to actually change from one computer to another and the list goes on and on.
On the positive side of it all though, thanks to remembering the existence of browsersync and synergy 1, I now have my 6 monitor setup I wanted for a while, by having 3 monitors and 3 laptops, that especially comes in handy since I am currently doing a ton of cross-platform testing.2
Guide to dev rant:

Devrant probe finished: no other content3
I asked my teacher if i would be allowed to use lists in final exam. (If you read my last rants about him you'll know he has a fetish with arrays) He allowed it! I'm feeling so relieved!
(He changed his mind more than once for the last few weeks, but this time he made a clear decision and he will stick with it. He even promised it.)
No more fear now, I know I can do that 😁
Alright ladies and no so gentle men...
The time has come for me to ditch dropbox (Because fuck wanting to use ext4 and also have some spare CPU usage when syncing a single fucking file) and migrate everything from my art storage to some old prototypes into private github repo's...
Prepare to see a shit tonne of rants about me forgetting how to git and all that kinky shit...
Wish me luck *salutes*1
I had some fun with ChatGPT today. I wondered how good its problem solving skills are. Turns out, it's no better than an entry/junior dev armed with all the docs out there - it knows what's written there, how to use the thing (language/framework/tool/etc.), but it has no "understanding" neither of the problem nor the tool, in a holistic way. It's got the knowledge, but it neither has the skill nor understanding of how/why to use it to solve a problem (any problem beyond plain simple complexity).
So the problem I asked it to solve was related to this one I had: https://devrant.com/rants/6312527 .
It was painful to troubleshoot this problem with ChatGPT. It kept on focusing on this particular problem and reacting to errors while trying to fix its initial solution. It took us a good while. Eventually, it reached a working solution, but it was an ugly, convoluted approach that was not feasible to cover my use case with.
FWIW I think it is interesting to follow its line of thought. Eventually, a pattern emerges of how it tries to solve the problem. And it reminds me a lot of myself on the first week in the IT field :)6
After reading some rants abut stupid project managers I remembered this situation that happened to me a decade ago.
One of the tasks was to move some html component to different place on the page. The whole page was a mix trs and tds and to achieve that I had to rewrite the whole page structure. I estimated around half a day to complete that task. It was my first job and I was not great back then, but still it was reasonable amount for this task.
Now lets introduce my PM : the guy was a complete tool. He was a former hardware store manager ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) and had no idea what we were doing.
He started ranting how on earth such simple task can takes so much time. I started explaining myself, but he wasn't listening. Instead he started sharing his screen, he made a screenshot of the page, pasted it to the ms paint, cut the component, and moved it to desired place. Then he said : It took me like 10 sec to complete the task and I have no experience, maybe I will replace you?
I was speechless. I had no words and I just kept silence.
Then he said he would reassign this task to X, because he is competent.
X spend more then 4 hours and I heard no apologies.6
Reading another rant about scrolling and decimal values I felt an urge to write about a bad practice I often see.
Load on demand when scrolling has been popular for quite some years but when implementing it, take some time to consider the pages overall layout.
I have several times encountered sites with this “helpful” feature that at the same time follows another staple feature of pages, especially news sites, of putting contact and address information in the footer ...
Genius right :)
I scroll down to find contact info and just as it comes in view new content gets loaded and pushes it out of view.
If you plan to use load on demand, make sure there is nothing below anyone will try to reach, no text or links or even pictures, you will frustrate the visitor ;)
The rant I was inspired by probably did not do this but its what got me thinking.
The good ol’ days of devRant where one could get +600 upvotes for a corny joke
(I’m not jealous 😁)7
After reading so many peoples rants about Wix ads, I have been asking myself, "Why in the fuck are people on here seeing Wix ads? What in the hell happened to their adblock?! Did their adblock quit? Is adblock missing? Why is no one concerned that adblock is missing?! We need milk cartons and a search party formed ASAP!"1
Part two of: a day off an iOS developer life:
1. App crashed and stack trace gives no info in which file it happened, I have a generic table view cell that is used in so many places and Xcode just wrote: xcell does not support key value.
2. Mac freezing when Xcode is creating IPA file thanks to a new feature in Xcode 9 (Mac freezing is the new feature, even mouse pointer doesn't move -.-)
3. Let's check the value of this class property, Xcode: fuck off and either print it in console (after hitting a break point) or expand that shitty tree at the bottom to reach your class property!
An advice: never click jump to definition when Xcode is indexing, it will either freezing Xcode or crash it.
Part 1 link: https://devrant.com/rants/1137208/...1
In the past: "Alright, have the day off, so can do some serious work (work on my game project). Let me just check my mail first... And a cpl of sub-reddits... And see if there are any updates for Unit3D, or any interesting forum posts, or new assets on asset store that look nice... And check some online newspapers just to see if anything is going on... And check if anything new has been posted on slashdot since I last checked 5 minutes ago (nope)... And maybe see if there's any updates to Sublime Text or new useful packages that can help improve workflow... Ooh came across article on how to improve workflow... Hm someone mentioned a new task-management system in comments, gotta check that out... I'll just sign up for a demo-account and... Hm but what if there are any better ones? Better google for comparisons. Wait, isn't there a new episode of Silicon Valley today? Gotta see that first, no time tmr. Hmm also new episode of Archer, and American Gods. Better get watching these out of the way first, or I can't concentrate... Ah, wait, it's dinner time, no point starting anything until after that."
Now: All of the above, plus "I'll just check devRant real quick before I... hmm... interesting rant... *scrolls and reads rants and comments for 3 hours*"
How am I supposed to get any work done? :_(3
I've seen several rants on here about poor documentation on great libraries. Well I just spent 9 hours in a car today and I realized that even the ones that have great documentation absolutely SUCK at being mobile friendly. I'm no web developer but how freaking hard is it to optimize your stupid website for small screens??? There are a million frameworks out there you can choose from PLUS it's almost entirely text so it can't be that hard!! I have to zoom in about 300% to be able to read it, then I have to scroll back and forth because it no longer fits on the screen.
I like how in one rant I'll read about someone who's tired of not reading any actual rants (The "Reee idk how to use the filters" people) and in the next someone's complaining about the the number of rants concerning XYZ (For example, PHP, JS, Semicolons)
You're just crusty bastards! There's no pleasing everyone5
Programming is like a Word document, except that if you make a spelling or punctuation error, you get 100 highlights elsewhere which aren't wrong at all and make no sense.

One word rants really .. just piss me off ... like omg ... you can't take the time out to actually have an opinion !
Eclipse ... no that not a rant it's a hateful pies of sh1t which supplies you a default view of code which makes you feel like you are a pirate looking though a portal to an island 10 miles away ..
Soap ... that just the annoying mechanism you will use and and swear at and every time you use it it's different ...
Sql ... that's just something you should learn ... learn it .. it's useful ..6
I wonder what this guy is doing now, he made the most upvoted rant on this platform and then ditched and probably doesn't know that He has the most upvoted rant.
At the turn of September, my mental health went really down hill.
I have always had problems getting to sleep and feeling that I don’t get enough sleep. So having a day without sleep didn’t feel so strange to me. Usually after that I have had great sleep, the next night not so much, and so. It is often a cycle of good and bad days / nights that gets triggered by too much stress probably.
This time I didn’t get to sleep the next night neither and I started getting really stressed about everything. I had psychosis-like symptoms. I super duper over-reacted to every stimuli and my head wasn’t in a good place.
I posted here about watching news and trying not to overreact and stress too much.
Then I posted almost a cry for help where explained the situation with politics and world news. I don’t get it either.
So I freaked out for no reason, and I just stressed more about the attention I got from devRant. Then I had a feeling that I’m being followed and thought that someone broke to my apartment. I was paranoid.
I left my home to calm down elsewhere. My dad’s and mom’s house. Didn’t help, and I ended up in hospital. Not too dramatic though. Just resting and trying out new medication.
Now it's better. I have the new medication and I'm having some health studies done on me so it won't happen again.2
Heya devRant people, I haven't been here for a while so I think I may have lost the touch with my rants. But no matter.
Ok, here I go.....
FUCK NUGET AND FUCK VISUAL STUDIO, THE FACT THAT IT KEEPS REDIRECTING A REFERENCE TO THE FUCKING AZURE SDK IS PISSING ME OFF. EVEN MORE SO THAT WHEN I RENAME THE FUCKING .DLL ON THE AZURE SDK SO IT DOESN'T REFERENCE IT, IT JUST DOeS NOT FUCKING RECOGNIZE ANY FUCKING .DLL I POINT IT TO, EVEN IF THE PATH IS CORRECT.
FIX YOUR SHIT MICROSOFT.
(Sorry for caps, I'm just really frustrated.)
So I've just had a meeting with a colleague of mine and, well, he didn't know I was leaving. It turns out, since Friday, my manager/management simply didn't announce it to those for whom it may be relevant because my manager thought they could make me stay.
It was a super awkward call in general and especially because they were hoping for my help on a future project. And now I feel bad for this guy as he was always very nice to me and also apologised a million times during the call for "his mistake". Then he even spent like 5 minutes searching for the announcement email in his inbox making it even more awkward when we both saw there was no such email sent.
(This is following this post: https://devrant.com/rants/4896892 )
No idea how I ended up here. So basically started with simple wordpress websites, transitioned to react. This move was the hardest.
Then caught up on node and mongodb. And before i knew i was doing db, backend and front end tasks. Now i know bits and pieces of everything
I don’t like the term “full stack dev”. I personally feel like I’m a Jack of all trades and master of none. There’s so much to learn if you’re a full stack developer. Endless possibilities, endless rants and endless frustration 🤯

fucked up shithead families with their entitlements
What a line-up.
One would have to be badass to just get out alive such families.
Is it a dev thing to strive for halfway decent acceptance or drive a no shit head policy?
Or just being able to find and accept people on their intent and thrive through (self) improvement?
I cut ties to four fifth of the family because of their meth head characters and the damage they impose on their direct, secondary and third party environment.
Hall of Fame of recent comments :
"If there were no information technology, every human had a job and there were no homeless people."
This brother of mine says to me while I helped him moving to a raging nazi shithole without water, electricity, roof, or sewers.
To the exact only one person of the family working in information technology.
Uhm. No. And there would still be machines and, well, the wheel?
Very eventful day, please see enclosed several smaller rants.
My college's systems are shit and not only do they use HTTP for everything, even the stores and financial aid purchase system, they have homebrew JS shit for PGP site encryption (nifty...), but they exchange the PRIVATE KEYS instead of the public keys. Over HTTP. Not even HTTPS. Also if you log in more than 10 times in 24 hours it's supposed to lock you out of your account until you call... except it locks EVERYONE out. Found this out when on campus, trying to get my textbooks, when suddenly everyone had login lockouts because i'm a "paranoid bastard" and "afraid of idiot college students" for not telling a PUBLIC PC to remember the one password (enforced by password auto-sync across all their shit, not ideal, no) guarding my SUPER-SENSITIVE FINANCIAL AND ACADEMIC DATA... among the other hundreds of issues this college has. I now see why this college is the only one I can afford...
Can't pass-through raw DVD drive access to VMs as VM managers crash when I try (yes, even QEMU...) so i've gotta install Windows on a shitty 80GB laptop HDD for literally one quick project. On the bright side, if my theory proves correct, you'll no longer need modchips for PS2s.
Found a couple odd lines in my xscreensaver config:
the first 2 I can't seem to figure out what do, and the last taught me a new word. Fun!
that's it, it's over, why are you still here11
The teacher I mentioned here, https://www.devrant.io/rants/138737
No longer works at my college. A lot of students had trouble with her. We got a new teacher and he's awesome. Let's see where this goes.
P. S. He lets me use Vim.
After being banned by PayPal for no clear reason (https://devrant.com/rants/1467792/...), I think this will be a good alternative. It acts as if you have a local bank in USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, or CNH! How cool is that!3
Oh boy... Oh boy... Deadline closing in and still no pushes by my boss...
This was a pretty bad interview process
What’s funny is that they told me I lacked experience, but then within the following year they called me at least 5 times asking if I was available, as they were desperately looking for someone.
I just noticed, it seems no one rants much about their work or work mates anymore... Or ever?
Guess I missed the notice...14
I just read some of my old rants and it's no wonder I don't have more likes. Even I had trouble figuring out what I was talking about.4
the internet is only good enough for devRant and I have no games on my phone. After a time there aren't rants to read anymore. 😂1
follow up from my previous rant
after a conversation with the intern product owner he came up with the idea of me going to the client and sit next to the person who send me the csv file.... and 'work it out together'... THE INSTRUCTIONS AREN'T IN FUCKING OLD GREEK! Even a potato could do it... No wait, potato's are too smart for that... I mean... it are easy work hours... Without doing much....
But I didn't become a programmer in order to sit next to the client and 'work it out together'... It would also suck to go to the client because I have no drivers licence (never had to have one, yay public transit!)
Why can't it be Christmas already? I could use some free time....
Reading IE rants on here and I'm confused.
If a client/boss asks to have something work in ie 8, for example, why can't you just say...
"No, it'll waste a hundred hours in Dev time, costing you at least 5 grand or more. please have your users upgrade to the latest browser, it takes them five minutes."
Or am I just naive
Just... Why can't you say that.8
Update to https://devrant.com/rants/1415880/...
After numerous emails back and forth my colleague finally came to the conclusion that the customers WSUS is responsible (i might accidentally forgot to mention that in my original mail, oops :) ) but also blamed one of my other colleagues for enabling deduplication on the servers so he can't reliably tell wherever a hard drive is full. (??!?)
But anyway, no beeing sorry for him beeing wrong and impulsively blaming and disabling my scripts, because of course he's not.
I really god damn hate this guy. Were it not for this beeing devRant with a focus on devs i'd have a lot more stories of this special snowflake.1
Today I dont feel that good.
I have only 1 month of my holiday temporary job left. After that Im going to university, the place that i have been dreaming about, the place where finaly i would finish my projects, where i would meet people like me that could support, help me with my passions.
I have no idea where i got that wave of saddnes. Normaly i dont feel that way. Job is unconfortable and sometimes stressing a bit but it is not the end of the world.
I just want to stay in confy bed for the whole day but i cant, i need that money for uni.
I tried to code yesterday but i just couldnt focus! Always when i try to finish the project, no matter what it is i just lose my motivation, its just gone.
Sometimes I wonder if that university is going to be as good as i was imaginig it, after numerous rants on devrant about their uni im not so sure... That dosent help me with my mood.
Is my terrible mood caused by loneiness? bad diet? or lazyness?
I just dont know... I just want to feel better. I just want to survive that month somehow, without that crushing feeling and constant depression.3
Who knew that NOT using results given from an API can actually help.
The private devRant APIs give you offsets in text of where links are in comments and in rants.
It’s EXTREMELY inaccurate and I don’t understand why it’s so hard to write it so it’s accurate 100% of the time.
So I said fuck it and NOT use the given offsets and just hard-find using the built-in algorithms inside Swift to create the range for me. Results? It works 100% of the time. No crashes, no out-of-range errors, no nothing.8
Never speak lowly about your profession or position to anyone. At best, no one cares. At worst, you lose an opportunity to improve that position.
Have pride in your work, irrespective of how much it sucks. If you don't have pride, pretend to while talking about it to others.
Rants are fun to read, but no one respects someone who rants about their own profession.

There's this weird situation where someone rants about their work situation and commenters dive in with suggestions and comments about what they should and shouldn't do without knowing all the details.
It really pisses me off not just when it happens to me, but I see other posters using devrant here as impromptu group therapy only to be bombarded with "do x or suggest to your boss...".
Now... I've been suggesting and asking the same thing to my boss for over a year, still no change. I'm demotivated because of the lack of progress, I can and do keep bringing it up with him. However having someone here (presumably well meaning) suggest basically the same thing doesn't help, it just reminds me of the frustrating situation.
When this place is supportive its great, when we're all second guessing each other it's frustrating.
Can we all be just a little more excellent to each other? I know I'll try to be. Instead of assuming someone hasn't done x or y, I'll try to be a little more supportive and assume that the most obvious things to try, has been tried.1
When all the n00bs start signing up to devRant that have 0 idea what development and/or rants are!!2
If you call yourself a developer or consider yourself part of the IT world and at the same time complain about software updates (all those dumb windows update rants) then do one of the following:
1- write a multi -million line of code OS that runs on virtually unlimited number of PC configurations and hardware and get the code right the first time with no major bugs, no security vulnerabilities, and a consistently fast and stable performance.
2- stop calling yourself a dev, or part of the IT world.
If the last 2 options are unreasonable, unachievable, or unfathomable.... Then stop bitching about software updates.21
So everyone here has probably seen many posts ranting (or should that be rants posting) about windows updates in the lastest version of Windows. I have seen one too many rants about losing work due to this well it happened to me to. ..almost.
Since I have an editor that saves work automatically I didn't lose anything but just had to restart by applications and set my windows how they were again. It wasn't planned and I had previously manually disabled windows updates but they still ran and rebooted my machine...grrrrr!
Doing some more research I found my previous fix which worked in Windows 10 1511, and 1607 versions (anniversary update and prior) doesn't work in version 1703 or 1709 the Creator's and Fall Creator's updates respectively.
If you have version 1511 or 1607 you can just disable the windows update service and windows store service and appxpackage services to completely stop windows updates and unexpected reboots. I ran it like that for over a year from 2015 well into 2017. After being impressed with the newer Fall Creator's update I decided to manually update to 1703 and then to 1709 which is the latest version.
The problem is, the old disable service fix isn't enough now in these newer versions. To disable updates in the newer versions you have to stop the usoclient which is the update orchestrator. Simply disabling the services doesn't work anymore.
Changing the file permissions of the usoclient will work and stop the scheduled tasks from firing.
Here ya go, no more unscheduled reboots. YOU pick when you want Windows to update:
Update on my devRant client SwiftUIRant:
I’m experimenting with some UI changes compared to the official app.
* vote buttons are laid out horizontally and placed above the rant to not waste space on the left side.
* comments count shows 0 comments instead of disappearing.
* rants are not cut off but visible in full length (I plan to add a toggle setting for that)
* creation date/time is present in the feed
* date/time formatter uses the current system region and the language english. So no more awkward American dates for non American users.
What do you think?17
Quick question/update over a previous rant.
My netbook battery status was always 100% on Lubuntu 18.10, I switched to Xubuntu and the same happens, but it reports correctly with Puppy Linux (old version). I thought the problem was in the battery itself, but now I think it's due to some broken drivers in newer version of Debian-based distros, or it is a bug in newer Linux kernel. But since I have no time to spend on a spare netbook, I'm not willing to test more options.
Anyone has a clue? 🤔
OMG... I want to thank my mother for changing my diapers for many years, my brother for all the games he no longer plays, my wife for actually making money, my plant for the awesome smell, God for maybe doing something (I guess), thanks @dfox, @trogus, and each one of you guys that deemed my rants worthy of your ++.1
I have this colleague that who is nice, but if you mention anything about (not complete) java, sun, vmware, windows, daus(dumbest possible user), car manufacturer your ears bleed with is rants about it.
We talked about BMW which published that the energy generated from recuperation of one of their cars is around 60%. Immediatly he rants that it its not possible and the calculated number of an forum user of the newssite who calculated that 90% of the kinetic energy is regenerated has no idea about the problems.
Sometimes its hard to endure the hate, but i can relate with him in some things.2
I can be manipulated. Yes, I’m now more resilient to manipulation than ever because I’m autistically good at recognising patterns, yet I’m not perfect.
For a manipulator, there is just one problem — now and then, my disorder obliterates my entire worldview, together with the foreign manipulative framework, so I can start with a blank slate. It protects me. Yes, this protection is akin to our body’s “we’ll boil all the germs in our own blood” tactic that instead of defining winners and losers only leave survivors, yet the force is unstoppable. You cannot secure the land that is hit by a tornado every three months.
That inner Nemesis is so strong that it even defeated a complex, almost fractal-like manipulation of my own mother that I lived in since birth, leaving her with a wound that will never heal. Wannabe manipulator exes didn’t even stand a chance. I don’t care if that force destroys me or not, as during that time, there is no “me”.
About my mom, long story short, she told me “I want to stop treating my cancer to die as soon as possible just to not see you anymore” after my coming-out. Full story is here:

I NEED MORE ANIMATED RANTS!
no please make more of them they were amazing, especially the GODDAM SOUNDS AT THE BEGINNING AND THE END! SO FUCKING AMAZING!3
Last few months have been quite calm. Nothing to really rant about. The egocentric asshole PM (see my past rants) left the company, so things have been better at work. I thought that there would be so much chaos because of all the roles that he had (project manager, engineering manager, lead developer, dev ops) but we managed to keep things running smoothly, which shouldn't have been a surprise for me, but I was a bit scared at first. Relieved, because well... the egocentric asshole left, but a bit scared either way. Anyway, everything has been fine. I'm pretty much the lead frontend developer now, even tho there's no official structure or hierarchy, everyone just keeps looking up to me for help and guidance. I've received a good pay raise. Work has been interesting and challenging. All's well.
This all coincided with me deciding to take a little break from devrant, and the lack of ranting material kept me from coming back. I just dropped by to say hello and check how devrant is going. I hope you are all doing well :)3
Have plenty of rants with enough ++ but I haven't requested stickers yet. Because i don't want to put them on something that i will end up throw away anyway. Besides from my gf, there is notting I'm attached to.
In this electronic age i which there was something more useful.
- email forward for firstname.lastname@example.org
- custom profile fields
Just don't see the fuss over stickers. Maybe when i was 12 but that's 2 decades ago. But then again. If there were no rewards, it wouldn't really make a difference for me.9
A very frequent topic for rants I see is the slowness and high resource utilization of Android Studio. My first thought whenever I see these rants is, "why not just use a normal IDE or a text editor?" Is Android Studio a hard requirement? Will no other software allow you to edit Java code and assemble it into a usable apk?6
In reference to https://devrant.com/rants/2340071/...
I feel like the elf on the shelf.
Maybe I need more elfpussy at work.
I mean, while at santas workshop. These workplace benefit man, just aren't cutting it.
Ms. Claus just ain't doing it for me no more.
Half chub is best I can do. Fedex won't ship little blue pills to the north pole this time of year. Doctor won't prescribe any more either. Says "you have a problem john."
No shit doc! I ran out of my god damn dick pills and have to code my little elf fingers off in order to make MurderSimulator 9, VA-Denied-My-PTSD Claim DLC Game of the Year edition for Santa's evil subsidiary, Activision.
Chinese sweat shops got nothing on north pole gulag elf slave farms!
WTF was that??? Do I see an XSS v̶u̶l̶n̶e̶r̶a̶b̶i̶l̶i̶t̶y̶ opportunity?
Large majority of rants is about incompetent project managers.
No matter where you live the problem stays the same. Most of them have no clue how software is being made and how dev/qa work looks like.
I frankly do not understand this phenomena. I have friends in automotive/constructions industry and theirs managers are engineers too in that field. Why it can't be the same in software development?5
Anyone else have this happen? Has happened twice already where the menu covers the feed and no matter what I do I cant remove it to go back to the feed(clicking rants, swiping, etc)4
After all the rants I've written on this topic, no, no, fuck no. I ain't answering jackshit. The trauma is very real. I'm trying to not have a panic attack just remembering few of the times I've lost work, personal data, side projects, accounts, you name it.
Oh dear God it's hard to breathe...5
So I did this https://devrant.io/rants/797965/... which works fine until medium sized data.
However for large data the ETL pegs a 6 core Xeon (2.2GHz) with 50GB of ram. Because of it ends up doing six threaded compares, so 12 different data sets. Other than "pull less data", any tips?
Code (C#) is basically a Linq multi column join between two DataTables and when the compared columns don't match it returns as a var which is turned into a third DataTable to be SqlBulk loaded into the DB.
Table1 is external API return data (no windowing) and Table2 is from our DW.7
this is a very Stupid idea so i wont put it to the dssue tracker. but. how about enabling people to host their own devRant servers with their very own rules? this way, the main server will have a bit more breathing room and common interests could have a shared server.
the client Would have the current buttons + empty buttons that can be given a special function from server side.
also, it would be possible to view rants from multiple servers (color coded so theres no mixup in button functions) in one feed.
the client would come with the main server on first start up. the most popular servers would be listed in the settings. also, rants with 50++ would automatically be put into the main server.6
Cont. on this: https://devrant.com/rants/2991618/...
So, after I gave them my estimates and pricing and whatnot, they msgd me back a few days ago.. guess what?
"We're going to go with the dude making that [shitty] WP site for free, we'll be in contact again when we need the online store" ... No surprise. Somehow it just baffles me how people think devs' work is nigh on free even though the avg salary of a dev is known to be quite high. Like how can you not count 1+1=2?
I know Windows update rants are a dime a dozen but HOW IN THE FUCK DID YOU MICROSUCKADICK BOOT LICKERS SHOVE SO MUCH HORSESHIT INTO THIS UPDATE THAT IT UNINSTALLED VIRTUALBOX? The hell?
Really, I rebooted my PC, short cuts everything, gone! Newer stuff is there plus any restore point would have had VirtualBox installed, so what the hell.
I’m stating to think that when Windows says “all your files are exactly where you left them” it’s a best guess because it just completely fucked with all your files for no reason and tried to put them back but it’s not so sure.4
rant && !rant
I started my Internship a couple of months ago, but it didn't live up to my expectations.
> The good things:
- I have a structured internship programme, where we are given a independent project to complete during the internship, so all the work is slow and nice, so no unreasonable deadlines.
- Cool-ass supervisors (and smart too). They let us leave if the we don't have any more work planned, no sitting until the end of office hours, so go home early and SLEEP.
> The bad things:
- Shitty-ass people. But I've to deal with them once in a few weeks, so not that bad.
- Restricted wifi, but some websites can be accessed for memes. So, knd of fine.
- NO BRAIN-FUCKING EXPERIENCES FOR RANTING. I thought I would start my internship and meet retarded people and post some rants but NOOOO, someone had different plans for me (that 'someone' is LIFE, just in case if you are wondering)
- Kind of disappointed about material for rants, but 10/10 it's been a good internship.2
devrant.io a site designed for developers and aimed at a platform they don't use for rants.
The desktop website is a quick bodge of a job, but they spent allot of time on the mobile app instead...
I would of thought that devs would prefer to write their messages on keyboard since it is second nature to most.
Correct me if I am wrong, but has no one else thought about this? I mean the web app is literally just a letter box view so that the format is the same as mobile...3
That moment when there are no more new rants, you check algo, latest and read all top and you just sit there lookong at the screen...
(inner self: start working on your side projects !!!!)
Just a safety pin:
If you ever, ever find my real name and go through my rants, then you should know
no pun intended
I love my job
I love my workplace
and above all2
So the thick shit that features in a previous rant of mine (https://devrant.io/rants/782171/...) just decided to pull all my wet clothes out the washer and leave them on the floor all night. Next time he goes out I'm sticking a hose through his window, fucking moron now I have no clothes for work tomorrow... Bastard
What the fuck is up with all these fucking shit-posts lately. devRant used to be fucking sick as and now it's just meme after meme and random shit everywhere. No true rants most of the time.
P.S. I'm back. Welcome to me.5
I thought the Devrant app crash problem was fixed? Three times this morning I went to reply to a rant and then the app crashed. Can no longer find the rants and my brilliant contributions remain unrealized. ;)4
Objective: drill a huge hole in the Apple!
Following rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1564522/...
So... Apple music store saves the music in m4a in the app folder, so no other apps can access the music.
It saves it with wird file names, no structure.
I'm noob at basicly anything, and because I'm on vacations I have a cellphone with python basicly.
How can I get the music info from the files, change the files names to their singer/group + song music and latter sort them in folders by artist, then by album4
made me realise since I was little, I wanted to register
- my_surname.com (its a Hungarian name but there is a french comic strip on the site lol)
- then i wanted to register my_surname.sk since I'm from Slovakia (nope someone has a chain of petrol stations with this name)
- well its awkward but lets do my_surname.eu (my surname is the name of a traditional Hungarian needlework so no fuck you)
- ok, I'm a Hungarian so lets do my_surname.hu (well fuck you i wont even load, but I'm already taken so..)5
I recently posted a rant containing the tag "$" (php, you know).
But if I search rants with the search pattern "$", the search returns no results.
I guess this has something todo with $ as a special character ;)
Is it a bug or is it a feature? *g*7
Thought I'd give Windows a try from that rant: https://devrant.com/rants/2002967/...
Typical windows, no biggie...1
Hehe I'm back peeps 😭 missed this community so much. Hope I can read yall's rants and have a pleasant laugh :3.
Also, I've ripped apart my android app and I'm rewriting it using Flutter. Yes I did that. I don't regret it though. Does Google have more control over me now or less? I have no clue. The whole dynamic vs. Shutdown framework risk benefit balance out I assume.10
Will there be a follow user list feature in the future for devRant? Something similar to Twitter's list feature. I have a few friends who have joined but no easy way to view their rants.
Unless the feature is already there and I can't seem to find it?1
Soooo... Following my previous lengthy post ( https://devrant.com/rants/985618 ), I talked with that friend of a friend and explained her what I could offer her. It turns out she's being funded, so she needs to have a receipt... What really amazes me is that she knew from the start that I can't freelance for now (the taxes are very high and the legislation requires payment even during periods of no work). Oh well, back to my personal projects... 😖
TIL that rants not loading when there's no internet is not a bug but a feature. A friend was going through the phone, and I don't keep mobile data, so he wasn't able know about the wk13 rants. Which is good because that would have destroyed him.
feature request / rant: there sbkukd be no posting new rants unless you have a minimum amount of +1. Maybe it's 10, or 25. but I've noticed the vast majority of people posting repeated memes, gifs, and overall irrelevant stuff are people with 0-5 +1. they should be required to post comments and be around for a bit to understand what devrant is before clogging up the feed.8
The DEVRANT SEARCH could be improved.
Often wrong results are on top, because the algo accepts 1 different character and tags have no priority.
Example: I clicked on the tag "hangover".
Among the top results there were rants with "handover" and "hannover" (German city).
The first rant with the tag "hangover" was at position 18
Wouldnt the search result be better with another logic?
Priority 1: Tags with exactly the same word
Priority 2: Rants with exactly the same word
Priority 3: Tags with similar words/expressions
Priority 4: Rants with similar words/expressions
Soooo I am an apprentice who just started his third year. Everybody in my team (3 ppl) left for better jobs.
I am now basically front and backend lead, teaching four new employees our restapi, web and javafx frontend.
At the same time I fix errors happening in production and develop new features.
I guess there are many great rants to come, so stay tuned :D
Going to write about things like tests that got disabled months ago after migrating to gradle, no documentation, finding out how to set up new development workstations with an outdated script missing important steps, management, print debugging in production and much more :)
Oh and it is not that bad, I learned more in the last month than in the two years before. (not saying my team was bad)1
How does it always go to this...
It is a rare occasion I get to be the only human being at home during evening time, so I really should make the most out of it (my own space and peace is really important to me, so living with another human being is exhausting, no matter how much I love them), yet I find myself yet again slouching on the sofa trying to figure out what to do and commenting on rants while time flies by and I find the hour so late there's no point in starting to do anything anymore...
What a waste of perfectly valid oxygen..2
Sometimes I want to chat in private with my rants friends here but unfortunately the dev rant there's no option for private messages.
This is bad.7
Weekly Out-Of-Context Thread
I'm looking for comments on rants. Not just any comments people, but comments that are non-sequiters, comments that are hilarious, or make no sense when taken from their original rant.
Anyone participating should link back to the original post to give credit. It would be great to get some regulars in here, but ideally we can prod some people into action that aren't on as much.
POST for our AMUSEMENT SLAVES! POST FASTER I SAY! FASTER!3
In reference to https://devrant.com/rants/2333764/...
I've always wanted a desktop I could treat like apple maps. Pan and zoom (or on touch screens, pinch to exit, opposite to zoom).
Drag to create a new folder/region and name it, like a constellation of files. Zoom or click to expand, and zoom out to exit.
I guess it'd be messy af, but it's a different way of thinking and organizing for some of us.
Some of us think hierarchically (classic folders), and some of us think in two dimensions.
I dunno, I've just always found it easier to find things by organizing into 2d groups, no matter the number of files, versus having to scroll and search.
But you're reading a devrant by a guy who has north of 25-30k bookmarks, so I'm probably clinically insane anyway.5
It's been 3 days since I started my dev job and it's been pretty stressful. I could have posted at least 3, maybe 4 rants each day. Mainly about trivial bullshit that I let get to me.
Lets just say it came to a head today and that's when one of my bosses, who doesn't even really need to know who I am, decided to help me out. No reason why, just being kind.
I get home to find my other half had been making my lunch for me for tomorrow and had made dinner for me as a surprise. Didn't ask her to do it, she just did it out of the kindness of her heart.
It just made me realise that I'm actually surrounded by great people who I value a lot and appreciate more and more each day.
First day of new job. No more rants about Blue Prism, that's in the past now. New year new me!
Time to go back to rant against backend developers and their fucking Laravel.
First lesson of the day: if I see another select2 I'm gonna commit war crimes. You see this nice plugin for jQuery, you use it everything's so cool and modern and you think you're the smart one of the team 'cause you don't know you've just polluted an otherwise perfectly fine web page with the dirtiest js shit you could possibly find, just because you didn't feel like searching one more minute for whatever replacement for a drop down you can easily find.
You're not the smart one. You're a criminal.4
I've been lurking here for a little while now and I thought I'd post my first rant.
I'm an intern at a software development company and I have to design an application for the company, that will only be used in the company.
Both my frontend and backend are coming along decently, but still being new to the whole development scene, I didn't gather enough user stories from my colleagues.
So normally everybody is working hard, but has time. But the exact day I planned to gather some more user stories everybody is as busy as could possibly be.
Now I'm sitting here thinking what to do. My brain trembles from it and if I get can't get an idea of what to do soon, I'll feel truly slothfull.
I know my problem is far from horrible, when compared to some of the rants I've read here. But I really have no idea what I should do at the moment.
Oh, and if you got the two references I did to a certain series, you have suffered.3
Fucking shit! So I built this new gaming rig: https://devrant.com/rants/1795588/...
Firstly the RAM does not fucking run on 3200MHz. The maximum stable speed is 3000MHz...
A secondly, the CPU is so fucking HOT! 50 degrees Celsius in BIOS, underclocking when I try to run stress test. I knew it is thermal paste, so I decided to take the cooler off and see and buy a new better paste and wtf AMD, their paste is so shit, that there was actually no layer of paste on the CPU, only on the edges big piles of it. WUT?4
So some of you might know I'm facing youtube iframe issues, to autoplay them in mobile
So few weeks later I found a solution to make it work the way it should in mobile i.e. to autoplay after a click on svg play button,
The logic I used https://codepen.io/briangelhaus/...
Boy oh boy I was so fucking happy, jumped out of my chair basically, So I grab a couple of android devices and it works
Enter infamous E-Corp Apple, the logic I used will never work on any apple devices, because apple do not allow autoplay on mobile, So I was like "okay, no worries"
I tell this news to my manager who is aware that I am working on this since weeks and he looks astonished for a millisecond when after hearing the same can't be done Apple, Tells me "then the issue is not fixed"
Well, you're not wrong, but a little appreciation to a trainee / jr dev who accomplished this by manipulating this would mean a lot for me.
And to Apple and Youtube Iframe API, FUCK YOU3
Time for payback, who's in?
I have always considered the regular recruitment spam to be annoying. Based on all your rants I now consider these messages a plague. My experiences with rodent... you either use repellent or lure them in a trap.
I have currently listed the following chatbot functionality for project 'Piper of Hamelin'. Love to hear your ideas to maximise counterparty time wasted.
- Yes I would be very interested in this job opportunity, especially since in addition to all 10 listed languages I am also very experienced in the following [list of 20 languages]
- Hi, hereby my resume, looking forward to your response (no attachment)
- Hi, hereby my resume, somehow it wasn't properly attached previous message (attach corrupted file)
- Hi, I am sorry but unfortunately something urgent came in between, can you please reschedule our meeting
- Hi, for some reason I cannot connect to Zoom/Teams/Else, can you send a new invite on another platform later this week
- Hi, somehow the document got lost, can you please resend vancency.pdf
- Hi, I really appreciate your time and effort, though a new opportunity came along just know that suits me better.10
Hello Team, Good morning.
Yesterday I was working on posting a quality rant but couldn't come up with something good. I browsed around other people's rants and started shit-posting in their comment section. I also put multiple hits on the ++ button on funny comments.
Today I will continue on coming up with a quality rant. No blockers, thank you. Rest of the day, I will be browsing other ranter's rants and mess around in their comment section.
Let me know if anyone needs something from me and feel free to reach out.
In my university days, when I used to spend time elsewhere than curriculum classes : "You're not getting anywhere if you don't get a degree in whatever you want to work with in your life."
Today I earn more than all the cousins of my age combined. No more rants from anyone, anymore.
I might not have a professional degree, but my family still sees me as a responsible person.
asl v0.1.3 has been released!
Full Windows compatibility and way lower timelapse times. Probably the best release so far.
Go on, pip install asl-screenlapse
(Way off target of https://devrant.com/rants/2251757/...)
Also probably the last cos you can just oneline it with ffmpeg: x11grab, speedup, direct output to file. So I'll write asl.sh. So simple I deserve no credit.
OMG. Talking about NTFS in this rant :
Made me think. Does the lastest version of Terminal on Windows supports that ? Does last cmd ?
LOL !!! the BEST terminal Microsoft ever made... Does not suport alternate streams in this test. (may be it's other syntax, no iea).
But cmd still does. The old cmd I never used since this terminal app was released.
I find it super funny.9
I sometimes cant scroll on devrant in the web version. I can scroll through rants but not the comments of one rant. It just jumps back to tje beginning of the rant all the time.
It seems to be connected to resizing the firefox window. If it's smaller, gg. Thats it. No comment reading for me.
I'm losing faith in my future right now!
I'm dying working for my current employer (read my last two rants) but no one wants to hire me and I'm not sure whether it's my skills, little experience or only halftime availability until I finish studies!
Also, while I'm at it, there are second to none game dev workplaces here, in Poznań (and working as a game dev is a dream <3).1
Talked the bossman, he just asked that I finish the project before being put back on my usual ERP maintainer role.
I agreed to it and the faster this fucking plugin is done, the faster I can go back to my optimization and maintenance project :D
I graduate college in December and I got my first fulltime job offer today! I've been working in my university's oit department for 3 semesters, lol most of rants are about that job. I guess a lot of my frustration stemmed from being capable but hitting a wall in the sort of things I worked on. I didnt feel like I was growing and had no avenues to express concerns/feedback towards the end. Plus the job was not one where they could give me a job after graduation, so I just felt unseen and discardable day to day.
But turns out this job worked out for me! There's an opening in a whole other division that does api development and data warehousing with Snowflake/Attacama and they want me specifically for it. If the benefits/pay ends up being decent, I'm leaning towards accepting it.
I love how devrant spreads at the office. See, no one wants to tell anyone about you since everyone wants to claim your rants as their own. But those who know, recognize the gifs as they spread across whiteboards, doors and channels nodding to each other with a secret smile.2
It'd be nice to be able to hover over the wkNNN tag to see that week's topic. As I browse through rants, many make no sense out of context.1
As i've seen a lot of rants about can't close vim type so I searched and found this in book does it work or not .
Try these: What to Type What it does
:q Quit the current window (or editor if you are out of windows) if there are no unsaved changes.
:q! Quit the current window even if there are unsaved changes.
:qa Quit all windows unless there are unsaved changes.
:qa! Quit all windows even if there are unsaved changes.
:wq Save changes and quit the current window.
ZZ Save changes and quit current window
If you can't get out of vim, you should check to be sure the caps lock is OFF, and press the escape button. If it feels good, press it a couple of times. If it beeps, you know that you've escaped enough. Then these exit commands should work.
Should be a sticky post: https://www.devrant.io/rants/93206
Should at least be bumped monthly, for new ranters...
Click devRant to refresh, no more scroll to top, as @pelonchasva pointed out.1
Do you know any blind devs? How do they work?
And can devrant be used by blind people?
Thought about this when reading this rant :
So I got accepted into a Master’s programme for CS - which is kinda cool but hardly unexpected. Guess I should feel elated about it, but honestly, I don’t know how I feel about it. Really it only adds additional complexity into the next few years of my life: I feel a little gutted that I have to switch over to my plan B regarding the sporting side of my life (there’s no way I can work full-time, study AND train for IM simultaneously - there’s just not enough hours in a day…), but that’s okay. At least I had a plan B knowing I might get accepted to these studies now.
What it really complicates is decisionmaking regarding this: https://devrant.com/rants/5571843/...
At my current workplace, I have officially 2hrs each week + an additional full work day a month to use for studying during work hours (in reality I tend to use more than that because I can, whenever there are no pressing matters need doing), and my gut is saying that’s unlikely to be possible in a consultancy position in a startup. Maybe it is, I don’t know. Need to ask.
In life, very few things are ever straightforward, aren’t they? But hey, at least I get to do my Master’s and I get to do it in a quality university!
Going out of order, because I need to rant 😆 https://www.devrant.io/rants/311992
Worst enterprise software forced to use:
Lync/Skype for Business
I've used a lot of crappy systems. But being forced to use this is painful. On Linux I make it somewhat bearable by using Pidgin but that has its limitations (no file sharing, etc.)....but after attempting to use the "new" Skype for Business it doesn't do that simple task either...so Lync 2011 ***2011*** for me. It's 2016, they know that right?2
So does devrant save all your rants?
Apparently I'm super narcissistic and enjoy reading my old rants and the responses to them. A lot. And I'm browsing through, clicking, reading all the old comments (you guys are really great, I love reading your comments) and I realize at the bottom of the list of my rants theres no pagination, no infinite scroll. It just ends at the bottom.1
Follow up to this rant/story:
I have my final interview this week and I am very excited and the more I think about it I get nervous.
This time one of the senior devs from last time will be present, some dude from the business department and another guy who had no information on the internet about himself.5
Goes to my comment on on of the rants to "Why linux cannot AVER be used by a normal user"
I'm pretty good with techs, OS, dev etc.
But here you go, a random error message which tells me nothing (Absolutelly nothing) and no way to fix it. No way to fix it, not even a hint where to look for solution, outside google. Sure, It took me around 5 minutes to find the problem googeling and copy/pasting some bash commands, but next time it happens and I don't have internet ? Well fucked.
This shit never happens on Wiondows or MacOs :) And that's why these 2 will always be user firendly ans linux will never be.
That's why linux will never be used by normal humains.
You 100% linux addict will point out directlly 'TYeah yours repos sources are fuckied" or whatever, but it IS NOT to user to know how sources, packages etc work. I want just update my system, if one source is not found, ignotre it by default ! How hrd is that ?
Error message in question :
E: The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/tr... jammy Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
Thanks for assisting to my ted talk.20
Started messing around a bit with @LucaScorpion JavaRant API thinking I might make a command line app. Well I have about 50 lines of code later and it's working to get a random rant and all the comments. The trouble is now instead of working on it I'm just back to reading rants... No way I'll ever be able to work on this without getting distracted.2
Follow-up of https://devrant.com/rants/2014517/...
It took me two days to finally get my discord bot to a specific voice channel in my guild/server. It turns out that there are two gateways and one https gateway. The https gateway, the main gateway with a websocket connection and a voice gateway (with udp I guess).
Guess that I will be able to let my bot speak at the end of this week.
The documentation of the Discord API is not so good. It contains examples that won't work even if correctly modified. That is why I joined the Discord API guild/server yesterday and they helped me find the solution to the "I get no response from the voice gateway".
It is only getting more complicated, but I love it. Maybe I love hurting myself lol.4
Holy shit. Do NOT open a Wells Fargo banking account. On top of their ridiculous password limitations, your password is NOT CASE SENSITIVE. I tested. Caps lock, no caps, a mix, it doesn't matter.
More info on the password limitations at my other rant https://devrant.io/rants/905148/...3
How about a rant about devrant. What idiot decided to make the rants on the main feed a collection of images? You can't select any text without clicking into the rant. Fancy bullshit for no reason, but to waste time, resources, and man-hours.2
Idea for devRant:
What if, when someone responds to a comment in a rant, it "links" said comment? Like the "Reply" function on Telegram?
Yeeeeeaaaah, I know that would technically be considered copying, but Whatsapp copied it and no one said anything, so... 😒
I think it would make things a lot easier when conversations in rants become more chaotic.
What do you think?5
Hello fellow ranters!
So I just switched companies ( free from hell...rants if wanted) and now I'm facing a ton of new things I never worked with. Honestly I'm a little bit scared and thus I want to prepare a bit for the new stuff ahead of me. ( I'm a junior developer with only 4 years professional experience )
What are good resources to get some knowledge in the following topics, so I wont look stupid on my first day at the new company?
DevOps ( CI/CD, Kubernetes )
I know some basic stuff to describe what these words mean but no work experience at all for these. My old work was purely monolithic Java EE 😅
Resources should be in English or German.
Thanks for every help!! 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️6
Some of my rants are about a previous dev who, to be nice, didn't play by the rules and did his own thing. Yesterday, I discovered a legacy app he had written that was essentially his own hand rolled version of Task Scheduler. From what I can tell, there's no functionality that isn't already handled by Task Scheduler, this guy just liked making his life impossibly hard.1
Probably a bug @dfox
I've been providing my feedbacks through the Feedback menu. However, I'm writing this issue in here just to know if I'm alone.
When I clear the notifications and refresh the timeline for new rants, the notification badge shows a number. But there is no unread notification when I go to Notify. This has been occurring multiple times now.9
The best part about my new side hussle i discovered (a glitch in the matrix) is, no one is going to believe me that i earn $200/hour, and soon just over $1000/hour as soon as i learn how this fucking nextjs syntax works. Once this is set up I'll be able to earn over $1000/hour on autopilot, every morning when i wake up I'll see at least $8000 in my bank, money generated out of thin air. If i don't make more rants in a few days I'm probably in jail8
I was taking a look at my past rants and I came across this one from not so long ago: https://devrant.com/rants/3646525/...
TL;DR: I said I was happy about my new internship because I was going to work on backend and it had pretty good pay for an intern. I also mentioned it was too good to be true, so there had to be a catch.
Welp, after almost 4 months, here's how the "great" job is going:
- Even though I was hired as a backend developer, I basically just did mobile for 2 months and a half and now I've been doing web frontend for the past month.
- I found out I'm actually being underpaid (like, at best I'm earning 50% of what I should).
I can't complain much though, it's my first job ever and I got it at the 2nd semester in CS without prior professional experience. But still, it's not very motivating seeing friends that started learning programming from scratch a year ago and are already being paid more...
Luckily my contract ends in two months and then I'll finally be able to start studying quantum computing and hopefully (in time) I'll be able to write simple "quantum algorithms" or whatever the hell they're called. I also have some projects I want to make (especially one that involves learning C++ 😋).1
It's about my freaking PC, again...
(If you still don't know what I'm talking about: https://devrant.io/rants/889384/ )
I have not ranted about this until now because I was trying to fix it on my own... but since I'm now desperate to get it fixed, I'll say it here too... please help me, I'll give you cookies or virtual hugs or something ;-;
The problem is... my audio driver doesn't work. I tried to update it (from Realtek's website), but... after installing the new version of the driver, it asks me to restart my PC, I do that, and then... nothing happens, the problem remains.
The audio icon on Windows' application bar says no audio devices are connected, which isn't true as it should notice the PC's native speakers, or my headphones, but it freaking doesn't.
As a musician, this for me is a problem...14
One question to the devRant gods: why make rants uneditable after five minutes?
I find no reason to this. Even the paid version does not eliminate this restriction.
All social media I know allow editing your posts afterwards (with some, showi g a change history).
Maybe... are the rants stored in a blockchain❓ 😱😂😂7
A lot of you here rant about devs being arogant or expecting you to think for a little bit with own head and then write a proper string that will help dev answer straightforward without guessing what the author smoked or so for which there's even a tutorial made (wasn't there always). But I don't see any rants about the other side of the coin.
Let's say you are a random dude, not even that arogant type. You see a question, no answers, everyone piss on that question because it's just a mess. Yet you find yourself in a good mood, so let's help the poor soul with th trouble. Answer like from a book for kids, fully explained example and...
No points, no accepted answer, but not even any feedback! Was my answer wrong? Did I miss something? How can I improve it? Was the example too complicated?
This is exactly the type of idiot that deserves a kick in the ass. It's no site, for hanging spam! Why the hell does that kind of idiot think there's even an option for own answer? People will come back to the question eventually and what will they found? An answer, which probably isn't even correct!
(not really talking about a specific answer/question, so no need to search)
What is software development like where you live? Would you say it's good/modern or bad/outdated?
For example, in Peru (this has a degree of truth of up to 95%):
- React isn't even a thing (nevermind RN)
- Everything uses Angular
- No Django, no Rails, no Express. Everything Laravel, CodeIgniter and .NET
- No NoSQL
- Objective-C >> Swift
- AWS? cPanel!
- No testing
Of course I focused on the "bad" part, but maybe this is what rants are for :) And I haven't said anything about salaries 😪
What about you? And please don't forget to mention your country.2
i think i will start a thread of my rants against the new mnc laggards that i am supposed to join.
me vs my new job : part 4/n
so today is 29th, and after going through a major EXHAUSTING paperwork for the last 2 days (which included e-signing of papers from a literal govt portal that was down 90% time and i had to manually do polling on it to get it to work), i finally have the onboarding papers ready and i headed to office for laptop collection.
i was told that today the only formality that will happen is the laptop collection, so i scheduled all my personal stuff accordingly and planned to just goto the office, take the laptop and come back home. hardly a work of 3 hours, lets get it done by 11 am.
how the fuck did i forget that this is a sloth company :/
- i reached office at 10, and my spoc was not picking up the phone.
- after multiple tries, he picked up and told me that he is on leave and gave me the number of another.
- the other guy was not picking up, so i called him back. he said that the guy will start his shift at 11, so call him after 11 (?)
- i ended the call and bashed straight into office. asked someone where he sits, went there, and his mates told me that another guy was supposed to attend to me (hopefully i got saved by another redirect, once that guy had picked up his phone)
- what's more, the other guy told me that he had mailed my HR that i should be coming at 2 pm to recieve laptop(!?!) and laptop will not be ready before that.
- my hr fucking didn't tell me this and now its 11.15 and i am sitting in the lobby waiting for my laptop with no food, water or shit inside of me :/
with fuckery like this, I will either surrender and become one of the laggard like them, or become a rebel, just do my work and shit on their timings and redirects, and soon leave for a better shit :/

me vs my job at mnc laggards
Do these laggards even know how virtual meetings work?
meeting 1: an induction meeting from 10am-1pm . one day ago, the supposed manager of me called to say that he will be in office after 10.30, so i should come after that. so ofcourse i missed the call from 10-11.30 as i was commuting. one would expect the meeting to be recorded but nope :/ .Also, the 1 hour session that i somewhat attended consisted of an old guy telling how he has been doing these inductions for last 10 years in this company and how company takes its code of conduct with utmost sincerity (wtf?? tell me the employee benefits you dinosaurs 🤬)
meeting 2 : a meeting describing the softwares, from 2.30-3.30 . no fucking person is leading the meeting and 10+ people are just sitting their with their mics off!!!
also sidenote: microsoft teams and outlook can go suck its own dick if it has one. one of the shittiest piece of shit i have ever worked with. People find them so complex that they instead have unofficial whatsapp groups for official communication.
And guess what : YOU CAN'T FUCKING CREATE THEIR ACCOUNTS IN ANYTHING BUT LAPTOP!!
And when whatsapp comes into the fucking work life, you can expect an RIP to the P of my life 😭😭
I was just thinking that bookmarking a rant could be a good feature for this community. 😁
I came across some rants with info I wanted to check later, but no way to save the rant anywhere. I just saved the links to a text file for now.2
Is it just me... Or is there like two different scrolling behaviours in the app on android? When I've for the blue theme with white text it seems really gittery when I'm first scrolling down rant comments or the main rants feed.. Then about halfway down it goes much smoother... No idea why...
Hi @dfox I saw an android user report this bug recently as a rant, and now I'm seeing it in iOS (latest app and os version).
Scrolling to the bottom, no more rants load. The little message shows stating that more rants are loading, but when you keep trying to scroll down there are none.
When I change the sort order from Algo to Recent or Top, I can't reproduce the issue. Seems to be only Algo.
Have tried killing the app and restarting to no effect. I hadn't noticed this bug last week interestingly, but can't confirm whether that's just coz I didn't scroll enough.2
Apple products are free as long as you spend too much money.

... Fable as a framework is a hot confusing mess with little to no documentation. Gorram it. I was kind of excited for the prospect of ”F# Everywhere”, but if you have to turn such a beautifully concise lang into a hot chaotic mess to make a framework for web front, then no thank you, I’ll try something else that isn’t JS...
So I decided to lose my Rust virginity and give Yew a shot... never have I ever written a frontend this fast! Holy crap, I’m baffled...4
No rants about new MacBook pro generation? Obviously one must rant about the absolute need to buy adapters to connect keyboard&mouse (let's be honest, BT devices out there are mostly nowhere near ergonomic)1
When ry finally speaks again for node, especially with all the rants he has to say to every single one in charge of the node foundation, I almost cried.
I like Fedor though.
Anyone here do animation?
So I'm developing this command-line animation program. It'll obviously only be for quick stuff
I'm thinking of accepting frames and an expression to order, overlay and diff/patch frames.
What kinds of things should I implement? I have done basically no animation ever.

My fellow programmer, you came here for a rant?
I apologize, you can have no rants. I won't rant for you today.
But you can still help me. What do you think of TypeORM? I'm starting a new project and I'm thinking about using it.5
Emailed them at 11:15. No reply. So I doubt I'll hear anything until Monday at the earliest
Silhouettes hide your pores,
not the chores for your work scores,
managers observe behind your eyes,
No one rants for the laughs,
where you now passed gas,
sum your growth of the past,
change the browser url paths,
or your boss will take your cash.
I am lately working on a Wordpress website (ouch, pain) for a friend as a side project and it is supposed to be multilingual. No problem, there are some plugins for it and thanks to one of my previous rants I found out the _e() function (still a stupid af name).
But I was wondering: given that I’ll have a lot of translations in some template pages in the theme, what is the standard way to do it? I have a couple of solutions in mind:
- single Po/mo files for every page
- as above, but with a script to merge the Po(s) before making the mo
Am I missing something obvious?
I was told to just use one po, but it sounds like hell to organise4
If we’re concerned about Big G tracking our location without our consent, I’m wondering why there’s actually less complains about SIM cards being trackable. They don’t even need an internet connection to get your location, and there’s no way to turn it off.

I was going out of the office... I saw "all the code for the admin work fine, it's perfect like the Monnalisa"... 23 minutes later 4 mail about bugs, problems with the back end and some columnin the db which become void without reasons... So now on I will say "the code is not working"
I am going do do a series of .net or programming related rants. These are confessions regarding things that no one has been able to answer in way that makes sense to me.6
Sorry for asking this question again but I got no replies or releated replies.
Is app academy open good for learning fullstack web development for a newbie or somewhat new to web development. There are barely any reviews on the internet about it. I did kinda ask about them in one of my previous rants but was recommended fullstackopen by @100110111
. I started fullstackopen pretty recently. App academy seems good too but it is a 1000+ hours soo I wanted to know if I am learning anything useful there.
Also thanks @100110111 fullstackopen is pretty good5
“I’m just a person who types things for 1/40th of my value - and that’s life and I have no control over it - so, don’t bother expecting me to be able to discuss it... leave me alone - I was happy just not thinking... “
- people who didn’t upvote my rants
Hahahah / but not haha. Really: super depressing for them...
