I'm buried in projects that I never get time to work on. My boss took the week off, and I'm getting emails from users asking about adding more projects to the board. I'm a single dev at my company. Normally, I have enough patience to get through the day, but today my CIO decided it would be a good time tell my coworker to let me know that the company dumped a third party we used for tons of report automation, and that I need to get these reports hand rolled in house asap. When I sent him a message asking for any kind of details on what this would involve, I found out he left early for the day.
I'm already stressed and putting in extra hours (salaried, so no extra pay) and am having trouble meeting deadlines for projects as it is because I'm constantly pulled away from my dev work to do non-dev work.
I just landed this dev position six months ago and haven't had a chance to build my resume. I'm getting "OK" money considering this is my first full-time dev job. Should I be looking to get out? Suck it up and get the experience? I know we all have crazy expectations on us and frustrating PMs, but after chats with other devs, I get the feeling that my situation is beyond fucked.11 -
Boss: Did you get that trivial change I requested completed?
Me: No, I've been busy trying to fix a critical issue with a production app.
Boss: I don't want other people dictating how you spend your time.
Me: ...
Let it all burn down, then, I guess! -
Some of my rants are about a previous dev who, to be nice, didn't play by the rules and did his own thing. Yesterday, I discovered a legacy app he had written that was essentially his own hand rolled version of Task Scheduler. From what I can tell, there's no functionality that isn't already handled by Task Scheduler, this guy just liked making his life impossibly hard.1

I've had my stickers for a while but finally decided to put them in my new Chromebook... and yes, that's Ubuntu!9

You know what sucks? Having to rely on a vendor for data verification. Especially when that vendor's systems go down every other freakin' day!3

Stayed up late watching the game. Got nothing done. Thankfully tomorrow is Friday and expectations will be low!4

Started using Trello to track project detail and overall whiteboard my project list. Made a list called "Top 5" and shared the board with my boss so her could keep track with me. After our first meeting using Trello, I walked out with 7 items in my top 5. Here's to hoping there visual aid will help him realize there's a problem.

Previous dev needed to validate new user names as unique. His solution? Query Top 1000 rows and do a string comparison. Totally scalable, amirite?5

Boss: The numbers on the report don't look right. Can you check?
Me: <checks> Yep! I verified the numbers against all external data sources and they match perfectly.
Boss: OK well we need to take a deeper look because they don't look right.
Me: ... I don't follow?
Boss: The numbers... don't... feel right.3
