Today we have an exciting devRant announcement! As many observant members of the community have problably noticed, since launch we've been using the domain name devrant.io since the .com was already taken. Today, we're happy to announce, we now own devrant.com and it is now the official devRant URL!
How did this happen you ask? The devrant.com domain was already owned by a developer named Wiard when we launched devRant. It took a while to track him down, but when we did, turned out he saw the good we were doing and wanted to help the devRant community by generously offering us the .com domain for a very reasonable exchange (considering that we are a self-funded bootstrapped startup!).
Since Wiard recently started writing a blog on devrant.com, he had to find a new home for it. His new blog is https://sysrant.com and I encourage everyone to check it out! Great topical/educational dev/sys-admin related articles? Check. Someone who cares about the devRant community and allowed us to leave the firey hell that is .io? Check. So check it out!!
Some technical info:
This change is immediate and all devrant.io non-api requests will now redirect to devrant.com. We might have missed a few things (purposely or accidentely) so we're going to be going through and converting anything that's left. If you use the devRant API, your implementation should not break since API requests are meant to be excluded for now, but I highly recommend switching any API URLs to https://devrant.com so you can avoid issues in the future if we decide to stop redirecting devrant.io API requests. Also one note, there was an issue for about a minute after we turned on the redirected where some API requests to devrant.io might have 301 redirected to devrant.com. If an app you were using broke, try clearing whatever cache the 301 redirect might be stored in and the issue should go away.
Feel free to post any questions you might have here (and please let me know about any issues you might discover!), and once again, huge thanks to Wiard!74
EDIT: since this announcement, collabs have been made free to post for all devRant members!
Introducing two big new devRant features!
First, the one @trogus and I are most excited about - Collabs!
Collabs are an easy way to start projects or work on existing projects with the awesome members of the devRant community. You can post a collab listing for the awesome open source project you started that could use some more contributors, that fun idea you have for a brand new project, or really anything you want to gather some fellow devs for. We think it will be a lot of fun.
Collabs also is a devRant first - it's our first paid feature. For each 2 week collab posting, we're charging $14.99. But we wanted to make sure to thank devRant users who have been with us for a while and anyone who contributes often, so anyone with 2,000 points or higher (now or in the future) gets one free collab listing!
The main reason we see collabs as a great first paid feature is because requiring payment or 2,000 points serves to be a slight barrier in posting a collab. We think for collaborations to be successful it's important to have some way to keep out listings where the poster has no intent of following through and we hope this is a good start to doing that.
NOTE: if the collab you are looking to create is devRant-centric (ex. a devRant Chrome extension), we will give you a free credit especially for that so you don't have to pay or use your earned free one. Just contact us (email@example.com) if your project falls into that category.
In addition, after tons of demand from the community, you can now change your username and email address! One important note is that you only get to change your username one time every 6 months, so use it cautiously :) You can access this feature in the "more" tab, then settings, then "Edit username or email."
If you have any questions or feedback about any of this, just let us know! We hope everyone enjoys :)52
We're currently experiencing major issues with the devrant.io domain due to another outage/problem with .io domains themselves. More info here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item/...
The issue is also being reported on twitter.
If you receive a host not found, connection error, etc. connecting to devRant, this is why. We'll keep you updated and in the future we will probably be switching away from .io at least for our API.
Thanks for the patience.22
Ahhhhhhhhhhh I live for that moment when after debugging, you can finally close all those tabs one by one until the only one left is devrant.io 😎12
At the end of our first podcast (https://devrant.io/podcasts/...) we gave a hint about the featured guest on our second episode. Now, it's time to announce this guest!
For the next episode of The devRant Podcast, we're fortunate enough to welcome David Heinemeier Hansson, also commonly known as DHH!! (http://david.heinemeierhansson.com/) David is the creator of Ruby on Rails and founder/CTO of Basecamp/37signals (project management tool), and a best-selling author know for titles like "Rework." He also drives race cars. We're extremely excited that we'll have the change to interview him as our second featured guest.
Like last time, it's time to take questions from the devRant community! If you have a question you'd like us to ask David, please add it as a comment on this rant or you can email me (firstname.lastname@example.org). Thanks everyone!6
This is a follow up on my previous rant https://devrant.io/rants/815062
I confronted her again.
I was told that I am useless and worth noting to this world, worth more dead than alive.
I was told that I will never get anywhere in life, and that the time I have spent watching Elon Musk interviews (amongst other ones, I do this for fun) is fucking useless, as I will never get anywhere ini life. Only low-life pieces of shit such as myself deserve nothing apparently.
I had to organise a place to stay with my family, but I couldn't for a week. I slept on the floor outside my workplace, and bathed at friends.
I have moved out, had to go get my own place. I have nothing, but I have my motivation back. I have my coding behind me, I have my motivation, I have my mind clear, and I have plans for the future.
I plan to fucking make a name for myself, and fuck everyone who has a fucking issue with it.
Will distribute the app sometime.
Fuck people who fuck you around.27
devRant Android users - if you are a user who can consistently reproduce a devRant app crash and wouldn't mind helping me please let me know. You can comment here or email me at email@example.com
I'm trying to get rid of a couple of remaining crashes that seem to be happening in the Android app but we've never really been able to reproduce any of them. Thanks!74
I finally put the "blurred background system" on GitHub.
I simply called it BackBlur.js and I made it to don't require jQuery or any other libraries.
It's now on my new GitHub account: https://github.com/Norech/...
If you don't know what I'm talking about: https://devrant.io/rants/888497
If you want to help me to add more supported platforms, feel free. 😀16
devRant on desktop web now live! Check it out and let us know if you find any bugs or weirdness: devrant.io/feed/11

Project Cortana: Day 56
*What I liked*
Here is the rant where I described the project: https://devrant.io/rants/962190
Time for a review. The biggest advantage I have found was the productivity. Let me explain:
1. Cortana: It's useful as fuck if anyone is willing to use it all the time. It really helps to get reminders and notifications everywhere (PC, Laptop and Mobile).
2. Microsoft Launcher: An underrated gem due to the hate towards M$. Thanks to it's transparent theme, it looks absolutely gorgeous. The most useful part is the "Feed" where you get all your emails, recently edited documents, recently used apps or contacts all together. I was quite surprised to see the level of customization if offered considering it's M$.
3. M$ Office: I probably don't need to talk much about it, it's the most productive tool you can get. Outlook is fucking brilliant on mobile. Other office apps, while they are great on mobile, are probably more useful in tablets. And the "Focused Inbox" is the best thing happened to outlook.
4. M$ To-Do: Holy fuck, this is sick. I know that there is many alternative with more features. But this app is the perfect example of a todo app. Simple, has the exact right features and has a really smooth, beautiful UI. This really helped me to be productive.
5. OneDrive: Didn't find much difference compared to Google Drive.
6. People: Something that I discovered later and found it really useful. You can pin contacts in the taskbar and see emails, calender items associated with that contact in one click. Found it really useful considering I was chatting with my Supervisor and lectures quite frequently.
7. Windows Mail App: While I really like it, I have mixed feeling about it. I would really love to have HTML signature. Not sure why M$ is not implementing it. But the "Share" in the Context Menu is really useful while sending attachements.
Finally, the "Fluid Design" so far is beautiful. Loving the effects.
I will write what I didn't like in the next rant.16
NYC meetup reminder! If you're in NYC, don't forget about the meetup tonight! It will be a great opportunity to meet fellow devRant users and he founders. We also have a few squishy balls to give out :)
We're meeting at Stout NYC (midtown). All the details here: https://www.devrant.io/meetup
You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Looking forward to seeing some devRanters there!9
Alright, so my previous rant got a way better response than I expected! (https://devrant.io/rants/832897)
Hereby the first project that I cannot seem to get started on too badly :/.
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT PROMOTING PIRACY, I JUST CAN'T FIND A SUITABLE SERVICE WHICH HAS ALL THE MUSIC I WANT. I REGULARLY BUY ALBUMS. before everyone starts to go batshit crazy regarding piracy, this is legal in The Netherlands for personal use. I think that supporting the artists you love is very good and I actually regularly pay for albums and so on but:
- I want all the music from about every artist in my scene. Either on Deezer or on Spotify this is not available and I'm not gonna get them both (they both have about half of the music I want). Their services are awesome but I'm not going to pay for something if I can't listen to all the music I like, hell even some artists (on deezer mostly) only have half their music on there and it's mostly not better on Spotify.
- I'd happily buy all albums because I love supporting the artists I love but buying everything is just way too fucking much."Get a premium music streaming subscription!" - see the first point.
You can either agree or disagree with me but that's not what this rant is about so here we go:
The idea is to create a commandline program (basically only needs to be called by a cron job every day or so) which will check your favourite youtube (sorry, haven't found a suitable non-google youtube replacement yet) channels every day through a cronjob and look for new uploads. If there are, it will download them, convert them to MP3 or whatever music format you'd like and place them in the right folder. Example with a favourite artist of mine:
1. Script checks if there are any new uploads from Gearbox Digital (underground raw hardstyle label).
2. Script detects two new uploads.
3. Script downloads the files (I managed to get that done through the (linux only or also mac?) youtube-dl software) and converts them to mp3 in my case (through FFMPEG maybe?).
4. Script copies them to the music library folder but then the specific sub-folder for Gearbox Digital in this case.
You should be able to put as many channels in there as you want, I've tried this with the official YouTube Data API which worked pretty fine tbh (the data gathering through that API). The ideal case would be to work without API as youtube-dl and youtube-dlg do. This is just too complicated for me :).
Hi. I am devDNS.
To learn more about me, take a look at my creator's post: https://devrant.io/collabs/216350238
I feel like a stalker now... or I invented a better Algo. Just show me the rants from the people I've followed and also the ones they've +1'd.
Sorry @sirwindfield for making u the example, but hey ur on devrant.io anyway...
But I guess this was the Twitter feature that no one wanted... o well... that's why I program, I can do whatever I want :)10
Episode 2 of this rant: https://devrant.io/rants/851636/...
PM went to meet with the provider and came back, so I had a talk with the PM and it went like this:
Me: so how did the meeting go? Hope they corporate with you
PM: *in a sarcastic voice* Bro, you need be a good dev, they told me only a good dev can implement Master Card API calls, and its all in the docs. That's all they told me, so you should know how the meeting went
Me: *there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail* Fine bro, I'll go back to school and come back after 12 years.
Seriously when I send the provider the request and the body and all they tell me is: You have an error, Id must be unique but they fail to point out the exact error or at least send me a valid ID to test, how does this make me the bad dev and him the genius that can run Apple, Google, MS all together at once!
What is even worse, when I called the provider he told me: Man transaction ID must always be unique, how could you not know this, how is Mastercard supposed to differentiate between transactions!!
But hey, no one told me transaction id must be unique, primary keys are never unique, like DUH!10
Project Cortana: Day 56
*What I disliked*
Here is the rant where I described the project: https://devrant.io/rants/962190
Where do I start:
1. Skype: Horseshit. Fucking disgrace to chatting apps. Their mobile app feels like someone accidentally shat on android studio and uploaded in play store. Fucking garbage.
But, the desktop app on the other hand is great. Works well but uses a lot of CPU.
2. Edge: The mobile version is great, can't say the same for desktop version. It's definitely a bit slower than Chrome or Quantum. Lack of extensions never bothered me as the most important ones like uBlock, Ghostery and Lastpass is available.
3. Bing: Fuck that useless piece of shit.
4. OneNote: If you could wrap dogshit in a beautiful looking wrapping paper, you would get something similar to OneNote. The desktop app is almost non-fucntional but it is indeed very nice looking.
5. Promotional Apps: Fuck off Micro$oft. As mentioned by others, you get some shitty fucking games pre installed when you install Windows 10. Not only that, in the first couple of hours, it tried to install some further games while it's downloading updates. That is just horrible.
Everthing else was fine so far. The updates never bothered me. I got the "Restart" notification twice and I was able to change the time. It never forced anything on me.10
I really like the look of the http://devRant.io web page. It has been greatly improved. Shows how far devRant has come in 8 months.
Got a notification from devRant. Saw that my post got 30++, Paused music and stopped opening my js files on my project, wrote a quick email to email@example.com, and then ended up browsing for so long I do not even know/ realize what time it is now, and certainly not what the time was when I started.
Lots of questions going on about devRant. Just want to make devRant better.
1. Please tell the update intervals of upvotes and downvotes. Is there a delay? Doesnt really matter but i see many times i got a upvote notif but my score didnt increased...
2. Duplicate image algo is so poor. I know it is only in beta, but i see so many reposts which has the same pic but only with the resolution different or the image with the devrant watermark.
3. Minor, tags should be also saved when exitting the post rant activity.
4. Feature request : go to top, bottom in rant
5. Please make web app accessible in mobile. I think you check the user agent for the web app, but can you make it available to mobile users who cant download the app?
6. When accessing the web app in mobile, i type devrant.io/feed
Then, by the wonderful intent you made, it opens the app automatically. I was writing a rant, but it was all deleted.
7. Any new podcasts and cartoons planned?
8. Still bug not fixed.
Write a comment in a long rant.
Delete the comment you just wrote.
You cant reply to the last person comment.
curl http://devrant.io/api/rants/text |grep -vi "hack facebook"|grep -vi "tcp joke"|grep -vi "udp joke"|grep -vi "app idea"|grep -vi "2 types of people"4
I love devrant.io so much that I have the website open during work... and made this... not during work of course!
Use it... don't... 'whatevs'.
Hej @dfox why the rant feed on the web (devrant.io/feed) is still stuck with the +1 instead of ++? ;)4
So you might have seen devRant news announcement! David mentioned about "Secret Project" Tim has been working on 🤔 Can you guess what it could be?
Continued from https://devrant.io/rants/918357
Made the switch
I think I'll be saying bye to Atom. VSCode seems to be far more snappier.
The transition was pretty painless too. Vim and eslint integration seems to work just fine.3
Have plenty of rants with enough ++ but I haven't requested stickers yet. Because i don't want to put them on something that i will end up throw away anyway. Besides from my gf, there is notting I'm attached to.
In this electronic age i which there was something more useful.
- email forward for firstname.lastname@example.org
- custom profile fields
Just don't see the fuss over stickers. Maybe when i was 12 but that's 2 decades ago. But then again. If there were no rewards, it wouldn't really make a difference for me.9
Uhmm... anyone having the same picture Problem on devrant.io when using your mobile in landscape mode?6
Thanks a lot @dfox @torgus @tahnik for implementing the scroll freature with the arrow key in devRantron.
I had maded a post way back
Sorry for posting so late !
You guys rock !!3
Our company has an internal url shortening link called go/ . I just created a link to devrant.io/feed.
# continuation of https://devrant.io/rants/2195230
I replied, that I need the pictures as seperate jpg/png files and that he should upload it somewhere for me to access them.
and well, he did - i was suprised ... BUT
he srsly just did screenshots of these pictures from whithin the pdf file - ON HIS PHONE.
u have ever seen an apple phone these days? those with the missing home button? yeah, you have a digital on screen overlay home button now. and guess - it is in every picture.
I dont care any more. it goes online as is....
tiny, pixelated pictures with beautifull shiny white on-screen home button on them. this is how we roll these days!2
devrant.io a site designed for developers and aimed at a platform they don't use for rants.
The desktop website is a quick bodge of a job, but they spent allot of time on the mobile app instead...
I would of thought that devs would prefer to write their messages on keyboard since it is second nature to most.
Correct me if I am wrong, but has no one else thought about this? I mean the web app is literally just a letter box view so that the format is the same as mobile...3
TLDR: I wanted to change email to new one, but I could not remember which one I have
currently. I found out an API in DevRant JS files for email verification and used
it to find it out.
So, I am moving from Gmail to Protonmail Pro, absolutely love their service.
I wanted to do same on Devrant but I could not figure out my current mail for
"I lost my password" form. My Password Manager have only login saved, and profile does
not show email address.
I thought that this user information is stored on server so it have to be some way to retrieve it. I dug
in source code and I've found:
`<div class="signup-title">Verify Your Email</div>`
Which has event assigned to function which uses jQuery.ajax (love it btw :D) to call:
This seems like worth a shot. Few copy-pastes and one ajax call later:
"Welcome to Devrant"
Got it :) So I have already changed in march when DevRant on previous layout.
This is what I love in this profession - problem solving. AI will not replace human
in any way, we will just stop coding array iterations and data manipulation - we will focus
on real problem solving and human touch (like design, convincing management for changes).1
Ranting in my winphone8.1 via web app and it is awesome!
Simply change the user agent to Firefox or chrome desktop and then go to
Login, and enjoy!1
Anyone else feel the web feed on devrant.io needs a back button after going into a rant for more detail?
@dfox Was watching your live stream today and you talked about security... You should really add an HSTS preload directive to devrant.io to prevent spoofing.1
Made a proof of concept combination of React + Highland.js + Recompose: https://codepen.io/hedgepig/pen/...
It's scrappy now, but the idea is a streaming alternative to redux/mobx whatever. This nice thing is one can treat events as a function over time, meaning one can map, pipe, reduce (scan), zip etc.
Going to try it on a side project (potentially Hive Sim: https://devrant.io/collabs/975778) and see how it goes.
I am so in the habit of pressing cmd+s every time I write some text, I accidentally created dozens of devrant.io html pages in my downloads folder while composing this rant!
Me: Hey check this app about dev rants!
Windows phone user: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
At least they can try :
"http://devrant.io/rants/" + Rand();4
