Friend: So you're a programmer? You must be good in hacking WiFis and sht.
Me: Uhm..
Friend: Can you hack my PayPal account using HTML?
Me: Say no more.13 -
There should be a communist programming language.
- There are no classes.
- There is no inheritance.
- All code is executed simultaneously, since it's equal.
- All variables are global, since everything belongs to everyone
- There are no private functions
- Every function must have side effects, for the 'greater good'
- As soon as it is written, you no longer own the code
- Instead the code owns you
- And your machine
I slowly get why this thing didn't work out on society either.9 -
What advice would I give a new dev?
"Learn COBOL"
No one specified that it had to be 'good advice'7 -
Brain: hey kiddo, want to stay home and work on your side project today? I'm feeling good.
Me: fuck yeah finally!
*call in sick.
*open laptop. Tabs and editors already waiting.
*play music, no sound.
*system is all laggy.
*fuck, restart.
*
*Installing windows updates...
*leaves for work.18 -
Me : Here's my resignation.
Boss : No need.
Me (Expecting some good words) : Why sir?
Boss : Here's your termination.19 -
*happily tapping along on my projects while commuting*
Some random kid appears, overly interested in what I'm writing, so I let him look.
Then he goes *snort* do you know why Java threw c out?
No.
*giggles* because c told Java to stop treating women like and objects.
Well, treating them like primitives is no good either.
*kid walks away*
Then I hear: mom. That man ruined my joke, he said treating women like primitives is no good.6 -

Customer :Can you build a system that rates our product by XYZ standard?
Us: Sure!
*time passes*
Us: Ta-da!
Customer: Okay, here are some good and some bad products!
*products get rated shit to supershit*
Customer: No, that's wrong. Some of these are as good as we can, they should be rated best!
Us: okay, we offset the results.
*products get rated good to barely okay*
Customer: Great! Can you sign that the system rates by XYZ Standard?
Us: No.
Customer : But we paid you to rate by XYZ standard!
Us: By XYZ standard your products are bad, you can either have your products rated by standard or pass the test.
Customer: Unacceptable!
Us: Improve production?
Customer : Not possible, the job is done when you rate the products good by XYZ standard.9 -
Someone, I have no idea who, commented on my personal project that he wanted to pick up one of the issues.
Then, he followed through and fixed it and sent a PR.
Feels good man.4 -

Knocked over a beer bottle with my hand and caught it mid-flight.
Felt like a fucking ninja.
No clue why I'm sharing this but goddamn that was good.3 -

tl;dr Yes, we know the standard for RAM is getting higher; no, that doesn't mean you can increase your app's RAM usage for no good reason.
Homemade, terrible comic.5 -
Friend: hey I started learning java..
Me: great, good luck.
*After few minutes
Friend: Hey I heard you're good in java programming..
Me: yeah I know stuff.
Friend: So can you teach me all good things in java?
Me: but..
Friend: half hour is supposed to be enough, right?
Me: hell no, it's not like that..
this stupid thinks half hour is enough to transmit all my career to his stoned brain..
I am going to die!12 -
Me to wordpress "developer"
- No, you are not a developer, you just drag and drop shit in visual composer
That felt good3 -
(Qt + OpenGL) didn't piss me off for a whole week..
My point clouds are rendering great..
I guess I could speed it up a little bit..
I'm doing good..
So yeah..
no rant..2 -
Friend: My other friend said he hacked into the Pentagon, can you do it?
Me: ummm No
Friend: So you are not really a good developer then?
Me: ummm No...I guess
Friend: well I'm hanging out with that guy then, he is showing me ways to make hundreds of $ a day online.
Me: sigh...5 -
Finally finished all the current issues and tasks I had set out to accomplish before the holiday began.
Boss comes by - "you're doing some good work, do you have anything you're working on right now?"
"No, I actually just fin-"
"Good, I think now would be a good time for you to redesign our entire intranet."
"Haha. Yes."3 -
OMG you guys weren't kidding. Windows 10 sucks. I finally understand why no one uses it anymore. I heard the Linux brand is very good.42

Interviewer: have you ever been reported for sexual misconduct at work?
Me: uh no
Interviewer: good to hear! Our last developer had wandering hands, which we don't approve of here
Me: ...6 -
Recruiter: Do you use .net C#?
Me: Uh. No. I applied for a position of a front-end developer. I use JavaScript and...
Recruiter: Oh, that's good. We need an Android developer.
*sigh*7 -
That movie about Facebook being made is so inaccurate. No one actually codes for hours straight. A good 90-95% of their time is combing through stackOverFlow posts from 200110

Annoyingly typical office conversation:
Person 1: "Good morning."
Person 2: "Good morning, how are you?"
Person 1: "Good. How are you?"
Person 2: "Good."
Person 1: "Good."
NO! Not good, fuckers. I hear this all day long, come up with something real or original. Talk about the massive shit you just took, or how hard you're taking the news about Diablo Immortal. It reminds me of that scene in Office Space with the repetitive call center lady, lol.17 -
Joy of being a programmer: Get good enough in a language/framework, you can make whatever the hell you want :)
There is probably no other field that allows this.15 -
Interviewer: So here are the technical tests. You have 20min.
Me: We agree I can use the internet?
Interviewer: No, sorry.
Me: Good, I'll make you pen&paper websites then. Seriously!?4 -
How I chose a new smartphone:
- specs good?
Yes: good, continue.
No: hmm i might live.
- looks good?
Yes: OOHH MUCH BEAUTY, SUCH AWESOME, LET'S GO TO THE LAST ONE!!
No: 😩. I'll live I guess, last step :/.
- can find a rooting guide on DDG within a fee minutes?
Yes: YES YES I LOVE YOU ALREADY I'LL BUY YOU ❤😍
NO: FUUUCK. Next.30 -
My friend got laid off today. He was told to not come to office from tomorrow. No explanation given even after a good performance review.
Why companies are so bad at treating employees like people.6 -
You know how some people put those little badges in their readme files in GitHub?
Well, one of my team members didn't know how to make those work correctly, so they just plastered images of them to make our repo look good. In actuality we have no coverage, no testing, no nothing...6 -
Just got picked up for a project. 20,000+ code base, no comments, no docs, variable names like x, xx, xxx, no function name conventions, and a mishmash of Czech, French and English class names.
I thought this job was too good to be true. #fml4 -
May not be much but this is my first desk as a programmer; no more awkwardly hopping from couch to couch or from Starbucks to Starbucks. Outlook for future productivity is looking good y'all.5

The moment your code is so good that there is no lint error,
intentionally modify the code to have some warning to check if linter is working.
lol3 -
Using Eclipse for java programming.
My program doesn't work... No errors, no warnings, the logic seems good.
A couple of hours of debugging later still nothing.
I close it and open it again, it works, thanks Eclipse.5 -
Apache no doubt.
Reason? It is good, and it does not want to shove a commercial license into my throat like Nginx wants.14 -
You are a consultant and wrote some easy scripts by copying code snippets together?
Good for you!
It makes your job easier?
Good for you!
You didn't care too much about UI because you only needed the job to be done?
That's fine!
BUT DON'T YOU DARE SELL THIS SHIT TO A CUSTOMER AND CALL YOURSELF A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER!
YOU ARE NO DEVELOPER!
YOU DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOW TO BUILD A RELIABLE SOFTWARE.
no one needs a solid database structure?
Object oriented programming is "just another hype"?
No one cares for the coding?
FUCK YOU, AND YOUR ATTITUDE!7 -
That moment you realise why you enjoy the dev life again.
It's been a long time since I've had a solid day of coding, just coding..., no meetings, no wild requests, no crazy issues, no data fixing because someone can't type a number correctly, just me, myself and that keyboard going on a field trip of quality coding time again.
Ah, it's a good day to end the week on!rant holy shit no meetings no problems lack of bau devlife those feels straight code quality code time back to the old days3 -
So this client wanted a demo on Dockers. So I gave the demo with some microservices running on different containers. Later the clients come back and say, "Docker is good. But please fit all the microservices in one container." I say but that defeats the purpose of microservices. But no, the client say. I tried explaining but no is no. Shit!! Fine! Have it your way!!5

When the frontend dev argues that Pestashop is a "good product" because "it just works" and "you can click everything up, no coding needed"
Any good tips on how to hide or disolve a body?9 -
Lost my cool on a colleague after she scolded me for saying “good morning,” as it was presumptuous of me to assume her morning was good…
Of course since she was already a soulless hag, it had no impact on her.11 -
Best fuck QA ticket. "Images are not loading good." No page. No more info.
What am I suppose to do? Test the whole fucking site.12 -
Just had le first sollicitation/interview.
Went pretty good! Nice guy, very relaxed talking/environment aaand they use Linux internally so no windows for me (if I get the job)!
Although the fact that I don't plan on staying longer than a year (maybe I was too honest) wasn't a good thing to say, it was a good interview :)18 -
Dear fucktards with cookie notifications.
Give me a damn button of just “NO, I don’t agree”
Ain’t nobody got time to unstick 500 check boxes every single visit, surely theres no good or useful reason of some of these sites having more cookies then words on their home pages.14 -
Good guy me. Had an issue and no helpful answers were provided on Stack Overflow. Found a solution, and posted my answer, even the question is 6 months old.4
-
Started my internship in web development so far everything is good but the only problem is website is on developed on WIX. No coding necessary 😣😣2
-
You have a question.
You google it; nothing comes up.
You read the documentation; no good.
You ask it on stackoverflow; no answer.
You are in... The Twilight Zone4 -
Stop trying to do better than client expects. Never ends good - no one will appreciate your efforts, and it often creates unnecessary misunderstandings.3

Won the 2nd prize in a Microsoft hosted hackathon. No for Windows but they really have good cognitive services. Used Azure vision api, one of the good ocr service available.2

Visual studio 2017 with Xamarin:
* writing some sweet code, life is good.. build and run.
*change int age to 2, build, build failed, no single message why.
*clean, clean failed, no single message why.
* build rebuild clean all or by project, nothing works, no single message why.
*change nothing, restart VS, build success !
* writing some code, same problem
*restart VS, "this project is not compatible with Visual Studio"

Good morning, good day and good weekend.
Sometimes babysitting is worth it Hehehehe.
No projects today, resting day, me, the pool, my nephews and a arduino basic manual.4 -
No matter how good we are in delivering our projects, clients will still think that we're not worth paying for. Welcome to reality.4

Wife wanted me to make sure that we can watch the entire season 12 and 13 of degrassi while in the hospital (which has no good internet connection), but there is no good torrent or anything that lets you get it downloaded locally.
So I wrote a super basic script to scrap the season from YouTube and download it. Now just having fun looking at it.5 -
IT Head: Hey, can you check out why application X isn't working? I've already restarted it and it isn't working anymore.
Me: sure.
Me 20 mins later: hey, looks like it is all good, website is normal, server resources are normal, etc...
IT Head: no no, the windows sync app isn't working.
Me inside: are you fucking kidding me you piece of stupid shit? Quit IT for good and die.3 -

No I feel better after a fucking shit day.
Want to say thank you for your fucking good rants.

Why do I have no problems writing code and designing databases, but draw a complete blank when trying to come up with a good database username for the code to use?3
-
How to open source 101:
1. Have GitHub repo
2. Install a stale-and-auto-close bot
3. Never respond to issues
4. Have a project so good it has no open issues
Why?!5 -
I have this interesting client who likes to end the weekly call with a prayer. Once he asked if I wanted to lead the prayer. I said, “No I’m good thanks. You should do it.”7

For the first time I have enough seniority to say no to a request from another team...and it felt so good.3

I feel JS has taken over...
The good.
Easy to learn, thus everyone knows it
The bad.
Everyone knows it, so npm has disgusting code that's used in prod.
Npm itself is still an unstable mess at times.
No one knows what it is to be a good programmer .
Dozens of frameworks every year since everyone thinks they can make it a bit better.
Classes still suck , no interfaces !6 -
Nooooooooo! My wife told one of her friends that I'm a DBA. The response. "Oh. That's good to know. I've been having this problem with my cell phone." No! Why? Aughhh!
-
In ESnext, private properties are marked with `#`.
Who thought that was a good idea? No really, who thought that was a good idea?
Why not just -- I don't know -- introduce keywords like ... let me think ... public, protected and private!?
Why this:
class MyClass {
a = 1; // .a is public
#b = 2; // .#b is private
static #c = 3;// .#c is private and static
incB() {
this.#b++;
}
}
If this becomes part of the language, no JavaScript developer may joke about php usage of `$` anymore.32 -
*About to start an important call with the client*

Just asked something on stackoverflow.
Has been 15min already. And still no downvote and no comment saying “fuck off”
Today is a good day.
🙃
Sorry for wrong tag. This ain’t a rant. I was just thinking “so? -> rant”5 -
Have a somewhat good game idea/concept...
Have no experience with game engines...
This could take a while10 -
"Sudo rm -rf / "ed my build server at work today... Died of laughter when i found out there was no snapshot.
We all had a good laugh. 😂😂😂2 -
That moment you solved something without Stack overflow and/or the official Docs... That realisation made my day ☺
Feeling more and more like a medior! (I am a junior) I might even program in my spare time again! It has been a while... I can't wait 😍😍3 -
Today my boss told me I work too hard. I wanted to tell her, "No I don't, your other employees just aren't that good."1
-
I cant express how outraged this makes me feel.
Me to my PM months ago (when I started) "we should upgrade the versions of node and angular when I do the tests (because yes, no tests at all)
Boss:"why? No no"
Our version of node 0.10.40 has no support any longer. But hey, I'm leaving that role :-) good luck new guy if new guy comes....2 -
I’ve had this cord (not the iPod) for seven years and it still works with no issues. Why can’t today’s cords be so good14

No, a 33 Page README is not the better choice.
Not for reading.
Not for writing.
Compared to a /Documentation/ folder
+ good overviews / links6 -
Working as a new employee: no wifi. No work. 10 new tools to get familiair with. 41 new people to get to know. No workstation. No desk. No signed contract.
So far so good.4 -
So... C++... Yeah.

a girl from my class made a presentation and it was really good, and now i'm thinking "how did she do it? what came to her mind that she could prepare such a good presentation?"
and also, "i know that no matter how much i try, my presentations will not be that good, because those are MY presentations"...13 -
Our documentation is currently stored in a VM image after the host died, meaning we have no access to anything - good times!5

Some have good teachers and do some good work.
The main problem for me is their false promises. There is no scarcity of junior developers. None.
Anyone can be a programmer doesn't mean that everyone can be a good one.
The first 2-3 years will be very complicated.2 -
A bug which takes 6 days to be found/fixed. Screw you financial data. 👹
🏀on the good side: whole class was de-constructed and re-factored + no other bugs were found! 😀🔥1 -
I coded the app so good
I optimized the UX SO GOOD
I made the UI look GOOD
I made the error handling and input validation ROCK HARD SOLID BULLETPROOF
NO FUCKING WAY COULD YOU FUCK THIS UP
NO WAY COULD YOU BE DUMB ENOUGH NOT TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT AND NOT FUCK IT UP
I GAVE IT TO MY DAD AS A NORMAL USER TO TEST THE APP AND HE FUCKED IT UP ON THE FIRST TRY
HE DIDNT UNDERSTAND THE UX.

In job description :
.....
- You should have a good communication skills .
....
At the company:
JUST FOCUS ON WRITING CODE , No useless conversation3 -
Clown manager put three juniors (and ”senior” dev on work visa) on new project.
They will never finish it.
It’s too hard for them with some legacy dynamically created complex database queries which will spook the hell out of them!
But managers like, ”it’s going to be good” and ”making good progress”.
Fuck no! Putting juniors together? With little support? It such a waste. They spent weeks just to get even the slightest progress.
No best practise. No tests. Just hacking away.
It’s a failure of the management! We fail our juniors and they will quit as soon as they get the chance and they feel like they have some wind under their wings.
”It’s going to be good”
Pff. Clowns leading this company.1 -
Good morning windows. As you can see spotify is installed and running but windows search says "no results"
Why windows is always so stupid.10 -
What good is a developer focused avatar WITH NO NECKBEARD!!! This is heresy, damnit. I demand a neckbeard on the next patch or we riot! Nobody is that cleanly groomed, these avatars are all lies.6
-
It’s amazing how Italian University doesn’t teach you anything. 3 years of college and no one ever showed me examples of code or how to write good code.6

Just finished setting up PiHole on my RaspberryPi.... no more adblock extensions with shitty performance... no more custom hosts files... and network level adblocking for all devices...
FUCK YEAH
oh, and I added so many lists that it now blocks about 350k domains (ads and malware)
Today was a good day.. time to hibernate...4 -
Had Weekend free for my own...No Kid No wife...just plenty time...what did?...I brew beer 🍺😎👌...of course I didnt used any ready-to-go mixtures...all done from the basics. Feels so good11

When you spend 10x time coding just because you can't, just can't resist writing good code, even when you no it's gng to make no difference whatsoever🙁
Why brain, oh why?4 -
It's an emotional rollercoaster when something good happens unexpectedly and you have no one to share/celebrate it with.1
-
When I was made redundant (business I was working for collapsed) 5 days before Xmas and 2 weeks before birth of my first child, with no pay, no redundancy package or anything.
Good times.3 -
No matter how many stackOverflow threads you study or how many resources you have, experience is really what makes a very good developer3
-
Just "learned" that Singleton is a good design pattern with no disadvantages. And in MVC the model should be a singleton.
FML :^)4 -
I'm afraid that this community become a place for everyone and the good thing is there is no ads.
chapeau for you devrant team5 -
There is no such a thing as a good dev days. There are only bad and worse days. Unless you are millionaire and you don't have to deal with clients.
-
Been working from 8 am til 7:30 pm, no breaks. Programming is awesome, fun and feels good in my brain (addictive ^^). But man its good to be home and do nothing. ~ sweet ~2

Spend hours implementing a working landscape design for mobile app. Priority #1 most important feature. Review meeting attendees decide not to support landscape mode because...well, for no good reason at all.

Will Always Remember my good friends
time is the only asset that has no price and that is something that we all have.
time is worth more than anything and anyone, even money. once time is wasted, it can never be bought again.

the only thing that has no price, is the thing that is given to our lives for free.
each day you are deposited 86400 seconds for free.
good morning2 -
know what is worst than fucking clients from hell?
fucking websites that need a mortherfucking good spec computer to run. i cannot even type properly. thought my keyboard had problem. no. I can fucking type fucking quick and well here now with no hiccup. i wish i can burn those all down.
no wonder we love devrant. even the website is fast and good.3 -

2 month to get married:

* lost the second client
Great job 👍 debts + no fucking job6 -
Can someone recommend me some good js readings ( algorithms / pure js / no framework related ) ? I just discovered this website: http://www.thatjsdude.com/ and I want more ...4
-
I'm the only one who after saying "nah, come on, I will backup it tomorrow, what could happen?", spends the day after by reinstalling Windows (after an awesome crash) and praying that the project he was working on for months is still there?1

One good thing about taking a dump at work is that no matter how senior or junior you are, the sounds are pretty much the same.5
-
Stuff is so rapidly depricated in javascript that you always have to add current year in Google searches to find something relevant.
"Dammit, this answer is from 2016, probly no good today". -
web dev agency makes a job ad that fits exactly my skill set.
*send an email in a good form with resume and everything*
No acceptance, no decline, no "we'll look at it", just nothing...
just fucking die already -_ -4 -

Thanks @devRant for the stickers!
Now I need to find a good spot on my laptop to stick em on.. No idea which layout looks best

Hetzner.
Simple, efficient, no useless fluff, decent prices for a good service, no hidden surprises or overcomplicated setups.
What more could you ask for?2 -
Okay today I wrote a very ugly api.. No f***king json mapper will handle that response in java. The values are dynamic... Good luck to anyone who will integrate into it... And good luck to anyone who will look at my code
Project manager please always give realistic deadlines2 -
Spent hours troubleshooting an internal app that had zero logging today. It would just terminate, no exceptions, no feedback to the debugger, NOTHING.
Turned out to be the damn corporate virus scanner blocking "malicious" behaviour. Good thing my desk is so heavy or I woulda flipped it... -
Many years ago, I wrote an app for a company to provision users in AD and Exchange. It disabled 10k users and no one could work. Good times.2

My first cli app in Python.
Also: there are no good timetrackers on the market.

So how on earth is Strict MVC good for web dev. A variation of MVC works well but strict principles no!!!5

So I installed the JACK audio connection kit on my Linux box, set up drivers, configured routings properly, etc etc.
Tried playing basic sounds. No output. Panic.
Redid configuration, tried again. No output. Panic++
Reinstalled JACK, tried again. No output. Panic++
Reinstalled drivers and checked ALSA (audio subsystem). All good. Tried again. No output. Panic++
Hit the Mute shortcut on my keyboard to unmute my speakers, tried again. Worked.
I am such an idiot, fml.1 -
#1 life lesson learned from coding: There are things I just can’t be good at no matter how hard I try.3

I'm considering getting to learn to use Linux, however, I have No idea what distribution I should start out with, any recommendations? If you know a good tutorial to getting started, feel free to post :)23

I hate having no inspiration, no good ideas and just feeling unmotivated. I have not came up with anything good in 1 year now so i just sit around rehearsing the function s i already know. If anyone has a good tip for coming up with ideas. Please let me know :)
TLDR I never get good ideas. Plz help.5 -
Rant at myself for being a moron.
Manually tried moving some InnoDB stuff around on a local server and corrupted a load of databases, with no backups since June 28th. Spent all day yesterday trying to recover with no luck 😑
Lesson learned: need to backup databases more regularly. Any good tools?3 -
Finally Google kills off a product no-one wanted in the first place! First genuinely exciting announcement from Google in a LONG time. Good riddance Google+!9

Just had a big breakthrough on my personal project, solved a problem I've been working on and off on for the past year or two.
Feels good man! No other way I'd want to be spending my Friday night :)
Anyone else get that good feeling from solving a hard problem you're stuck on?4 -
the internet is only good enough for devRant and I have no games on my phone. After a time there aren't rants to read anymore. 😂1

People seem to like cryptographic puzzles. Well, try this one for size:

Answer is a sentence in plain english. Space is used, but no punctuation. Post answer to comments. Good luck :D2 -
I visit these tech meetups and most of the time I have no clue what they are talking about. It's good that they give free food.

No rant today. I'm actually really happy where I am. There are things that can be improved from a stack perspective, but I'm happy to have a good supervisor who's supportive of my training.2
-
What I like about devRant is the lack of usernames in the feed so people vote without judgement to the author. What was written matters more than who wrote it.
Obviously, I appreciate that it uses lightweight JavaScript. No JS bombs like mainstream social media. ( https://devrant.com/rants/9987051/... )
Also, posts have no titles and no formatting, just raw content. No clickbaiting and no bold italic screaming are possible. Posts have to get just straight to the point.6 -
Serverless will become increasingly prevalent.
Javascript will become even more prevalent than it already is.
I make no comment on whether I think the above are *good* evolutions, however. -
I don't care about your good ideas.
If you don't code, don't art, have nothing to contribute to the work, and aren't going to pay me for my time, then there is no collaboration.1 -
From the book
Refactoring JavaScript
Turning Bad Code into Good Code
Evan Burchard
HOW CONVERSATIONS ABOUT REFACTORING SHOULD GO UNTIL TESTS ARE WRITTEN
“I refactored login to take email address and username.” “No, you didn’t.”
“I’m refactoring the code to ____”
“No, you aren’t.”
“Before we can add tests, we need to refactor.” “No.”

Looking at an old Java project, running java 1.6, test folder doesn't even exist and the "old but gold" java.utils.Date class is used throughout the whole thing. How do I initialise a new date again...? I actually just googled that :D At least the constructor parameters are named nicely... wait.. what...1

I am working for a company that has developed a custom CMS but has no documentation written for it and now no-one knows how it works... Best thing is that it advertises it in its website. Good job!

During an interview, how to detect if a company has a dysfunctional flow of development? What good questions to ask?
Like things are scattered all over and there's no standard being followed, no architecture, no code reviews, everything is a patchy magic, no testing, and everything is just on fire! How to avoid such companies?6 -
Just disabled JS in my browser. It required adding devrant to allowlist though, but otherwise so far so good. Especially on garbage sites like wired: no more popups, no cookies, no tracking, no yOu'Ve ReaChEd yOuR dAiLy lImIt bs…1

Started making 5 figure income a month while working for myself. But have no friends and no interests to talk about besides work. Im a really bad case of "all work and no play makes the jack a dull boy". I spent last 8 years to achieve that. Is that good or bad? Im so much lost in my work that normal living sounds so boring at this point10

Recently I wondered why so many people complained about Windows 10. I had no issues, no crashes, and no bluescreens. Everything was fine.
Then the "anniversary update" installed. After days of restoring partitions, reinstalling, boot repairs and blue screens I realized Windows 10 is now incompatible with my PC.
Well, good thing MS extended support for Windows 7... -
i watched "1 week in vr" this week. I reommend it.

I like that there's no hard statement like "vr good/bad". It's more like an introspective emotional experience. -
So I was looking at ups's on amazon and I scrolled down to the questions section and someone asked "Would this computer be good to host a game server?" I honestly have no words😂

I wanted to talk about the right job.
In my previous job I did not feel happy, the management was weird, the salary was low.
For a time I was thinking, I need to get better and do more and I will have a better salary and management will be more lenient towards me.
After a few years, I got an offer to join a much bigger company with a bigger salary and better benefits.
I joined them of course. And it turns out in some places you just do not fit in or the company just wants something that is not realistic and always will be unhappy with you.
In my current company, I have never felt better working, the team is awesome and tasks are challenging but doable, and they appreciate my skills and speed of work.
TL;DR:
If you do not feel good in your company, leave for some other company, most likely it's not you, but its the job that sucks.2 -
Best way to deal with office politics?
As background: we have our own implementation of some C++ data structures, including an "Array" class (basically the same as std::vector).
A few years ago, the senior guys on my team refused to add new features to it for (seemingly) no good reason.
So senior guys from another team added the features anyways, in THEIR repo.
My team couldn't stop them, but refused to allow the new features in OUR repo, so now our Array is split between two repos for no good reason 😢.
Two years later, here I am, hoping to clean this up. As far as anyone knows, there's no good reason to have it split up like this.
How do i convince my team that we should move the code to OUR repo where it belongs?7 -

Everyone ranting about how they express themselves through code.
And here I am on project where I can make almost no decisions myself.
I got into coding for the same reason as everyone else. I'm pretty good, so they put me on this project. Junior guys get all the good stuff, 'cause this project is too important. Ironic, eh?2 -
The downside to personal projects: it reminds me of how bad I am at designing UIs. I have no idea how to make things look good or where to put components. :/2

Why are there no good file managers for Linux?
Come to think of it, why are there no good file managers that aren't Windows Explorer?
All I want is a good breadcrumb bar (editable), customizability, basic functions such as permanent delete, open folder with, etc, and built in zip reading. Is that too much to ask?
Currently I use the elementary OS one (works a bit better than the default nautilus) but it lacks a ton of basic functionality and there's pretty much no customization.
Please someone make a usable file manager for Linux. Ugh18 -

Had a dream about computers on earth mostly stopping working for no apparent reason, yes, again. But this time, they still work on Mars, so we go there, at least some of us. UAC-esque, Doom 3-ish aesthetics, but in a good way, no death and no darkness. No hell plot though, we’re all fine. Both earth and mars are equally semi-livable, but in different ways. For some reason, we can’t ship new CPUs to mars, and 775 pentium considered a good CPU. We use SQL and HDDs. Elon is also there, but he’s nothing, a peasant compared to other scientists and engineers who are a part of the exodus. I had some problems with food and shelter initially, but @netikras helped me2

My preference:
- compact and quiet (no numpad)

- backlit functionality

Let's say you're pretty good frontend dev, a bet geeky about strong typing. And you're paired with an API backend, and it's PHP. You would think it's pain when it's bad PHP. No, real pain is when it's good PHP, and backend dev embraces and uses dynamic nature of the language to an extreme.3

So I've been fiddling around a bit with Minecraft mod packs lately, and I've noticed two things. A. there seems to be no good mod pack launcher/manager and B. Curse Forge sucks and has no public API. Corporate bullshit with FTB and Overwolf... So I've been thinking about building a modding platform and making it open source and accessible for everyone. So a few questions for the ones of you who have done modding, or are just interested:
- Is there already a good platform?
- Would it be feasible with mod pack licences and what not
- Would the modding community welcome another platform?
- Is there a good launcher to integrate with?9 -
