Guys what the hell.

I clicked “update and shut down” and it honestly did it. It didn’t restart and leave my laptop running. It actually really for real genuinely earnestly updated and SHUT DOWN. Microsoft finally figured it out? They finally did it?????

It’s probably a bug.

You'll be surprised with the update continuing the next time you turn the computer on

@electrineer I find the usual process is:

1) update and restart

2) check for updates to make sure there are no more updates

3) repeat #2

4) open up outlook, visual studio, teams, ssms, etc etc

5) go for a coffee

6) return to find your pc has rebooted itself and is doing updates.

So Shutdown isn't a complete shut down unless you turn off the fast boot shit. I turned off fast boot because it corrupted a mounted encrypted volume I was using (veracrypt). It doesn't seem to make a difference in boot time. YMMV

Not sure how this would affect an Update and ShutDown command though.

That's why I use Linux because it's my damn machine not theirs to decide for me
