Thank you guys for all the love towards spacex.
Mission completed successfully. :)

    Instead of space can we work on getting wifi speeds up? I shouldn't have to deal with 0.5 to 1.5 mbps in 2018....

    @jAsE In our educational buildings, we get 500 mbps. But the building where I do all my homework, aka my bedroom, gets a few mbps. Come on man can we at least get 20 mbps? Pls?

    wake me up after you have achieved spacesex.

    It's one thing to be happy for SpaceX and enjoy the posts here but to claim the "love for SpaceX" as someone who (looking at your previous posts) almost certainly has nothing to do with SpaceX, let alone Elon Musk, is pathetic.

    @jhh2450

    It's not an instead.

    Part of the SpaceX program includes 4000 satellites to provide better wordwide internet coverage. In low earth orbit, latency can be kept under 10ms, and speeds can be made competitive with cable/fiber.

    My prediction: SpaceX launches Starlink, Matt Desch's Iridium will operate satellites & ground stations next to their existing constellation, Alphabet/Google will set up a new ISP subsidiary (which is why Google/Fidelity invested $1B in the first place).

    I know that a lot of people don't like the idea of Google as their ISP -- But this would also scare existing providers worldwide into slashing prices and investing in the quality of their service.

    @jhh2450 Also, it's NEVER "instead of" when it comes to science. Fucking pour buckets of money into it. No fucking compromises. Scientific research is the greatest tool to drive the economy, wealth and standard of living forward.

    You know the best place to fold proteins for medical research? Space.

    You know where you can get unlimited rare materials for electronics? Space.

    You know the best place to produce high speed internet fiber? Space.

    Thanks to the plummeting cost of launches, it's becoming economically feasible to crystallize the zirconium/barium/lanthanum/aluminium/natrium fluorite glass in zero g aboard space stations, which leads to near-perfect fiber, able to carry 3 orders of magnitude more data.

    @jhh2450

    There is a reason Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos came up with his target for Blue Origin of "millions of people living and working in space".

    The earth is pretty limiting in how well it can sustain us, and what it has to offer.

    Humans are always hungry for more, more knowledge, more territory, more raw materials. If we want more without destroying our home, we must expand outwards.

    Before it was only exploration drift and curiosity. Now it's starting to make economical sense though, so the internet conglomerates of the world will soon claim and divide the solar system.

    @Floydian Mbps is not a scam, that's the unit everyone uses.

    @bittersweet Chill dude I was joking...

    BUT DID YOU LAND THE LAST BOOSTER?!!!?!!!?

    @jhh2450

    I just see way too much comments on the internet along the lines of "stop putting effort into x, do y instead"

    From people swiping their smartphones on the couch, aimed at people filling fuel tanks with hydrazine, at people peering through microscopes, at people who write code, weld train tracks or spend sleepless nights adjusting a prototype in CAD.

    Fuck lazy homo sapiens, roll up your sleeves, do x and y, and fucking finish up z while you're at it.

    Not aimed at you personally, but fuck being chill. Become a fucking paragon of your craft.

    If your internet is slow, I'll come dig a fiber trench. Where do you live? I'll ride my emu, wearing my cape and a shovel. Fucker.

    (I think I should slow down on the coffee 😜)

    @jhh2450 hehe!

    @d3vnu11 you just mentioned me! I was busy with the launch :)
  • 1
    @MrJimmy hehe! Sure it is ;)
  • 2
    @d3vnu11 I mean it though. Emus are amazing, top speed of 50kph, they can swim large distances and jump, and their meat is a tastier chicken with lots of polyunsaturated fat, and flavor rich eggs. Not patented, this idea, so if you want to train emus as urban transportation, like an emu-uber... wait, screw the fiberdigging, we should strap solar powered access points to their fat bodies, make an urban emu meshnet. Maybe food and package delivery? I don't know. I feel like my life needs more emu. And more sleep. Maybe.

    @Mitiko nope. it did not make the cut :(

    @bittersweet Fairly certain my University wouldn't appreciate me digging a fiber trench on their property lol

    @jhh2450

    Actually... probably depends on how well you think out your plan, where the closest exchange is located, how many buildings you plan to connect and how much space there is in the budget of the university. See if you can find a contractor willing to give an estimate, check whether any student councils are campaigning around the issue, go sit with the company in charge of campus maintenance.

    Often, the only thing stopping change is someone with the balls to organize and push hard enough.

    Lots of effort though.

    @elonmusk So did you get the footage of a booster going 300mph (~500km/h) landing (splashing) into water 100 metres from the camera?
  • 2
    @jhh2450 here, we are the opposite. At home, I get 60mbps and at school, I get (at most) 1.5 mbps.
  • 1
    @ewpratten Ran a speed test on one of the PCs connected by Ethernet in the CS building and it pulled 500 mbps.

    @MrWouterNL No, he isn't.

    @nickpapoutsis he's too busy reviewing memes for pewdiepie
