Having exams on paper sounds ... archaic.

I am for paper exams. It's not practically efficient but I find myself learning a lot from it!

It's fine as long as you get enough space for the solution and you don't need to write code.

I remember my prof had a great idea for this , he used to have a 10 min assignment after every class based on what we did , open book and discussions . These assignment contributed a significant waitage in the course . This not only forced us to attend classes but also enabled him to have no exams
