Wanted an iPhone badly since 2007, and I'm about to get one today.

What do you folks think? Is it garbage? Is it worth it? I just really want an SE. Really tired of meizu lags and freezes.

What to expect from iPhone? Are there some shocking downsides?

For me Apple is the shocking downside. It's ok as user but just fucking annoying for programmers. Maybe take a look at the oneplus 5T which is a really good smartphone for a "low" price and almost stock android. (Trying to save you from the dark side) But like I said as a normal user it's still good.

But you pay 50% for the apple symbol and it doesn't nearly have the functionality of an android device (no offense for apple users)

@uyouthe You can't realy develop apps for ios if you haven't got a mac and xcode installed. There are some companies who try to solve this by hosting build servers for you but then again you have to use their frameworks. For example Ionic/PhoneGap/Cordova. But this approach is driving you nuts because you can't debug errors then.

@ArchLinux Yeah like rejecting apps which are not optimized for the new shit iPhoneX screen at top. Just imagine what this means for a company with more apps, like 20 or something from different clients. Thats one week or more of work where you earn nothing and just throw resources out of the window.

Look up the Asus ZenFone series - Android and really user friendly in my opinion

Why are software engineers hating on Apple? They’ve spent as much money on research on software as they do hardware. Look at their integration between software and hardware. You can even see the beauty of their framework as a developer. I’ve worked on both and actually prefer iOS!

Don’t most Android phones rip you off by selling you mostly hardware and at the very least some Android OS manufacturer customizations (Bixby)? You’re missing half the experience!

Please, we’re software engineers. We know that software isn’t free. The cost of Apple products is actually justified if you look at it from that perspective. Though I’m not sure why we’re complaining about cost of these products with the salaries we have in the first place.

I'm sorry but yes I recommend other people's suggestions. In terms of development iPhones tend to be the worst performing device for web based pages /apps. (Or so our office finds). It's sits just under IE on our horror list. (Memory issues)

1. Quick as fuck. There should be no lags at all, I'm fucking fed up with android lags
2. Compact. 5" is way too big for me, 4.5" is still big. Honestly i need 4".

I'm not going to install custom terminal and node js on it. I'm not going for customizing the hell out of it. I just need basic features (camera, browser, some basic apps), but i require them to work well

The IPhone is kinda streamlined, should work fine out of the box and defines how you have to use it. But if you're planning to develop software for it, you're gonna have a bad time.

Android devices require you to make a good choice before buying it (because quality is varying a lot), but allow you to adjust the system to your needs - there are a lot more alternatives for everything available than on iOS and you have more influence on the look & feel. The system itself is also more open; depending on the vendor/manufacturer you can get root permissions, install custom roms, etc. Development is a lot more enjoyable and easy to get into than on iOS.

If you don't want to invest a bit into configuration, don't plan to develop for mobile, don't have need for a lot of personalization and don't mind paying twice as much for the value, go for the iPhone.

@uyouthe SE is dead by now. Friend bought it last year, now searching for a new phone, 'cause SE is really struggling with all the new updates.
Your main issue is to find modern 4-4.5" phone.

iPhones are excellent build quality, you can get new os every year and it runs great. i am on a 6s in my 3rd year with this device. the ui is great, its easy to use. running latest os, very fast. if you want reliability and up to date OS, iPhone is best, they maybe more expensive but for everyday use as a phone, camera, browser and other shit its totally reliable. i have had an android for my son and its flaky and shit compared. you will get apple haters on here but pay the little extra and run it for years. Android users tend to get stuck with the os they bought the phone with so they don’t get security updates and the like. Go for it, you wont regret it.

@helloworld I think you don't fully understand how the Android eco system works.
Most of the things have less to do with the OS than the manufacturer and how good of a device you are buying.

Many (if not most) manufacturers which do not or only partially suffer from the problems you are describing. Especially the Google advertised devices get updates very fast and are supported for a long time.
After losing update support you can still switch to a custom rom and enjoy an up to date Android (although I'd always prefer to make the switch right away, because it gives me all the freedom to configure my device as I like).

Whether a device is fast or slow for depends on whether you bought a good device. Mine for example, the Oneplus 3 has great hardware and is therefore blazingly fast.

Not hating, but a polite note:
Android depends on hardware more, 'cause you can't optimise OS for all the different phones.
OS updates and upgrades depends on manufacturer (Samsung, LG, etc., so blame them :) Some got upgrades from 4.2 or 4.3 to 6)
Also, my phone is still on Android 6, but I've received recent security updates

Also, installing non-official ROM takes somewhere around 30 mins in total nowadays. I've installed android 7 on friends SGS II and it runs smooth and stable...
Yes, SGS II as an everyday phone is very possible even today. The maint problem is obsolete hardware, otherwise it's as great as it can be

iPhone looks great. However, if you buy it, you'll regret after a year of using it. Spend it on one plus 5T

If you really want to give apple a shot, try going with a used iPad 4+ or iPhone 5+

But if you're really into IT (which I suppose, since you're on devrant), you should prefer a good android phone like the oneplus 3T. Got nice value for the price.

@jazzydevill It's Acer Zen. I've made the same error in another thread 8) I own one myself and I'm extremely pleased with it 😊 Except for the camera. It has a 1 second lag when I take a picture. That's huge (;_;)

iPhone OS updates come with software to deliberately slow down your phone when it's an older model, to make you buy a new one. So much for not having lags... 😕😑

I don't think that there is anything wrong with the phone. My issue is with the Apple ecosystem. Of course, Apple products work best together. It starts with an iPhone, then you get the Apple TV or an iPad. You start looking at buying a MacBook and shop around to find the best specs for the price. Before you know it you've invested years into Apple's product lifecycle and upgrading becomes something you plan for. Now you're living how 'they' want you to live, consuming your music and movies the way 'they' want you to. Once you've sunk a couple $100 bucks into iTunes and Apps it becomes hard to justify moving away from all of that. At least with Android, you can switch brands if you want. You can even get something like the Essential Phone, it's very iPhone-like. Personally, I'm moving towards the Pixel 2 and Google's range of services and I'm really liking Project Fi, Google's cellphone service provider. Signed, ex-Apple fanboy.

While I've read so many negative comments here about standards and quality. I assure you, the experience Apple provides you is still unmatched by many competitors.

While there are many great phones like the One plus 5T and Google Pixel (two phones I would recommend you checking out before finalizing your decision) I find that Apple is a little more stable and worth the money.

Trust me, I have been an android and apple user. But since I'm a designer, Apple appeals to me because of software compatibility, consistency, and standards. As a designer standards are defined using Apple devices (which is why it's important for designers to have it in their inventory)

Moving on to development, I read a comment early in this thread talking about rejection from Apple. You honestly wouldn't be rejected if you designs and develop quality applications. 1/2

Paying 99$ a year may sound weird if you pay 25$ for life with Google. But then again, have a look at the quality of applications between the two platforms.

I love my iPhone. Recently upgraded to the iPhone X and honestly, this is one heck of a phone. It's super well refined and it's amazing.

I recommend you give it a try.

Overexpensive and Apple isn't the best company... They were slowing down older phones to protect the battery life without user consent until a little bit ago.

Anyone self-respecting Android user on DevRant would be running a custom ROM, so I highly doubt OP would eventually stop getting those updates (if he were to get an Android).

If anything, Apple stops giving updates sooner from what I've seen (though that'sanecdotal evidence from a G4 iPod Touch)...

iPhone X here, I love it. I’m not going into detail because I think any phone has aspects they are great at and things they need to improve. I was a die hard android user until switching to an iPhone, I don’t see myself going back. Sorry, not sorry.

@SSDD If that was true you should avoid it at all costs. If there is only a fan base if a product and people who hate it - no middle ground - it's probably bad indeed.

But as you can see from reading this thread, this is not the case.
