So im a massive ChromeOS fan and would love to own a Pixelbook but cant afford it at this time...

I've been watching a few late reviews and all they do is complain about the price and "limited selection of things" chromeOS has, just watched a reviewer pull an iPhone X out of his pocket.

A pixelbook has the same functionality as an android phone and more for roughly the same price, why can't people see full comparisons rather than just oh its not windows, really shits me!

why would i want to by an Android phone with a full size keyboard over an Android phone with a touch keyboard?

i dont see the appeal for a laptop with an OS with almost no programs / apps outside of the Google Suite, unless im missing something?

I think chromeOS could be really interesting since it is user friendly with their "simplicity"...
But I think they should allow to install linux program's to appeal more to the advanced user. Isn't it already based on Linux?

@OnlyBytes they are implimenting Linux containers, you'll be able to install any Linux application when its down, even on managed devices

@C0D4 for the same reason people buy a surface when all they do is word processing and web browsing of buy any MacBook.

They would tout android devices like the pixel 2 and S9 but a laptop that can do the same and more is scrutinized because "oh it's not windows, I could get another laptop with windows"

@OnlyBytes I'm super excited for it, mostly because I'm pretty sure each app runs in its own container with access to the filesystem for security from malware and such...

Most of what I do is based inside the browser (primarily Jupyter Lab as programming environment, for which I can run Jupyter kernels on a server machine at home). For any document stuff I used Google’s Drive/Docs etc. services.

For that reason I can imagine chrome OS working very well for my workflow.

However I can’t think of any reason why I wouldn’t just run a lightweight Linux distro on a small notebook and enjoy the same possibility and a lot more, inside a more personalised and familiar environment.

@C0D4 you can run Linux in chroots, AND you can run Microsoft office. What more do you need?

@OscarSouth chromeOS would be perfect for you then, fairly similar layout to windows so not much of a learning curve.

@Cheeseypi but you give us the security of chromeOS by being in developer mode, can seriously fuck your installation up that way

@lxmcf so you mean they don't capture anything extra. Not like their "accidental" bug which captured wifi traffic when the Google Streets Map cars were moving nearby :/

@rusty-hacker no more than the browser does, I'm not really a privacy nut so I don't look into it that much, i just know it's light, secure and fast 👍
