I'm not one of those "windows sucks lol" guys, but I got used to having my dev environment set on Linux and due to some technical problems I'm setting things up on Windows for a while (dual boot).

Now... Jesus CHRIST how annoying this is. First, I use Laravel and the whole documentation assumes you're either using Mac or Linux. Second, everything has to be added to the god-damned PATH. Third, Windows sole purpose now seems to be updating the PC (and hogging my bandwidth in the process) so I had to waste time taming the beast called Windows Update.

Again, not the stupid old Linux vs Windows thing. I use both for different things, but had never set up a dev environment on Windows.

Just FYI you can turn off the auto updates, even in Windows 10.

@mohammed hey thanks! Also, Windows will let me pause the updates for up to 35 days, but that's no good since it'll only have even more stuff to download after that. I opted to limit the bandwidth in BITS and it worked :)

@Kirk you can disable the windows update service from windows services.

@mohammed it was my second thought after looking for something in the settings (not an option anymore). But it turns out the OS will simply reset the services to manual-running, no matter what ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

@Jilano now I'm curious, what do you mean by the Linux side of Windows?
  • 4
@Jilano that's what I was referring to too.

@Jilano using the Linux shell on Windows, that's... amazing! I'm testing it today. I might have heard about this but I'm not sure. Anyway, can't wait to go back home and try it.

    (don't worry cmd, I haven't forsaken you)
