C0D4669027yIt most certainly helps, and gives yourself exposure to projects outside of the confines of your work.

greyfade1777yIf you're not continually learning and keeping up with the technologies you use, and if you're not continually putting your knowledge to work, you *can't* be a *good* developer.

No you don't.
Although developing/programming or rather anything related to compu tech is extremely addicting( believe me! ) And mind changing. You might end up liking latest trends in computing, advancements in Al , and trying new language than sitting with a bunch of people discussing trump jokes.
I still like watching john oliver and GOT but recently developed taste for silicon Valley and kotlin too because (1) GOT is not coming, John oliver is off (2) Silicon valley is really funny and kotlin is cool and (3) my friends are stupid and i hate college . -
pain04861717yI'd say it depends entirely on what your work allows you to do. If you are allowed to continuously work on new projects or rewrites that take advantage of newer tech or at the very least they provide time for learning and training, the I'd say your covered. Of that isn't the case you should at the very least be knowledgeable about innovations in your field and how to use those technologies and how they are beneficial.
I think most devs are passionate about what they do and carry that home with them which leads to pet projects and self learning at home. I am fortunate enough to utilize newer technology and training at work. I still do a lot of learning at home, but I don't have the time for side projects. And I don't believe for a second that makes me a bad developer. It does allow me to spend more time with my wife and daughters though😋
