Client wants PHP 7.2. I install PHP 7.1 by accident.

Client complains that I don't respond fast enough after 30 minutes (!).
I was in an appointment. I check the ticket. He messed up his entire server by trying to install PHP 7.2 himself because he couldn't wait half an hour longer. We always aim at 4 hours response time, and we hit it with every reply..

I apologize and tell him the costs for me fixing his mess. The client: "if it feels right for you to charge me because you never did your work right, do it."

Some people. How? HOW???

    Eeeew for that customer.

    Btw, fellow sysadmin?

    @Linux yes! Luckily this was just a consultancy customer with their own self-setup server, which is asking for problems when you don't know Linux IMO..

    @xalys
    I really know what you are talking about :/
    Some people think that we only work for them and dont have anything other to do

    @Linux right, and anyone can get a VPS and put cPanel on it. Sure, it does work, until it doesn't.. And then proper sysadmins come in :)

    Hey so like I didn't like the color you painted the room it was a shade off ya know so I screwed up the walls n' stuff trying to do it myself even tho you're a professional painter I hired

    Why are you charging me for fixing this????

    @xalys
    cpanel is aids.

    @Linux to me it seems like cPanel just wanted to create a control panel that disobeys any security conventions. It's bloatware but you get the point:)

    @xalys
    I fully agree.
    I had a customer that wanted plesk, that server is not feeling well.

    @Linux that's understandable. In control panel land, DirectAdmin is heaven compared to cPanel / Plesk. It's just that a control panel makes people forget that a Linux system really is more than just clicking around in a fancy GUI.

    Well, he tried to go the DIY route so...

    If you (or your site or w/e) says you respond within 4hr, then you respond with 4hr.

    The last time I checked my clock, if you respond 30 minutes since the last response, then there are still ~210 minutes left for you to hit your mark.

    Why do customers always feel entitled to have a response within a few minutes lol, it's not SO where you mostly get a response within 10 seconds

    What's the major problem with installing php 7.2? Why do you need someone knowledgeable? Aptitude can't do it for you? Yum? Whatever

    Also what does it offer that php 7.1 doesn't that makes it so needed? Shouldn't it be php 8 if it's that important?

    @demortes
    I have no idea what you want to say

    @Linux how can someone screw up a minor version update so bad it messes up the server? And why is it so important?

    @demortes
    Install it? Easy
    Making it actually work - not so easy for devs
  • 0
    @Linux I'm assuming at this point the making it work part was done already? Or do you mean apache config and all that?

    @demortes
    Apache/nginx config
    PHP pools + the correct PHP modules
