Microsoft is investing in Git, VSCode, Electron, Github, Bash-on-Windows. Things that decentralize and help prevent lock-in.
Apple is taking away the only universal cross platform graphics system (OpenGL), locking developers into Metal, and taking away our escape keys.

@Alice The whole github fiasco here is nothing but Paranoia.

@TomRiddle Agreed, Microsoft might be turning over a good leaf with this FOSS thing :)
    *might*

Apple is part of the Vulkan dev... And it's why OpenGl is slowly fading away
  • 7
@Litarvan Well they have dropped the ball on Vulkan too, deprecated the support and in a way forcing devs to use Metal2

@TomRiddle mybad, guess situation really sucks

Why can’t you compare metal with directx ?
Microsoft is starting with opensource so I need time to trust them, and Apple was there for a long time.

@vane Yeah MS has DirectX but they never depricated support for OpenGL, OpenCL or Vulkan.

@TomRiddle yeah apple is deprecating those old technologies that they are not supporting for quite time. Some folks call that innovation others stupidity. I call it courage to try to change something, we can laugh or cry about it now but maybe appreciate it after 2-5 years. Just to mention that I was flash developer when they dropped support for flash and it turned out to be good thing.

I really really hate Apple for the developer lock-in if you want to distribute iOS apps. I mean, XCode is not good, but it still would be nice if there was a minimal version for other OS so that we are not forced to compile that shit on a mac.

I can compile my whole build in the cloud on a linux server but when it comes to the iOS binaries, that shit runs on a slow af Mac Mini which is actually slowing down otherwise innovative CI strategies.

And do not get me started on the Cloud services for this shit.

@vane Old technologies?? If u don't know, those technologies are very well supported and updated. Vulkan is in no way outdated(still Apple never supported it) and OpenGl and CL are to great.

Even MS keeps it's DirectX updated (which is proprietary and not cross platform) but still fully support the open technologies.

Now, think about the unnecessary extra effort for devs to port their stuff for mac!!
That used to be a task of few hours before, but now they'll have to re-write everything, coz Metal!!

Now flash was known for its vulnerabilities and shortcomings but its nowhere the case with the above mentioned.

@TomRiddle I feel your pain I also have a feeling that apple recently ignore developers and have more focus on proprietary customer products, and technologies. But might be that gaming wasn’t apple target like opensource wasn’t target for microsoft so when they start to care about it they make mistakes like we everyone are. By the way moltenvk is opensource https://github.com/KhronosGroup/... despite apple didn’t put any effort in it.

That's why I bought a refurbed 2015 MBP last year and have not upgraded from Sierra.

New touch bar Macs have crap keyboards, oversized touchpads, no ports, and missing physical ESC. No thanks.

Love my mid-2015. Going to use it until it dies. Probably be like 2025.
