@import-fun I own 1, the recordings are hilarious at times just from the tv triggering it.
It’s nice to be able to view and potentially delete them, I see them gone from my account, can’t say they’re actually gone though ☚ī¸

    @import-fun
    “Ok Google, pause the chromecast”

Best feature ever when in another room.

Why is anyone surprised? The company behind it collects data for profit and is tightly integrated within one or multiple mass surveillance networks so yes, of course this fucker records everything (can't prove it but common sense anyone?)

@linuxxx would you trust and/or use an open source voice assistant? 🤔
  • 5
@incognito If it had a physical on/off switch, maybe.

But every voice assistant that isn't in my building or room also can't be abused/hacked :)
  • 2
@linuxxx and what if you could host it yourself? (Local network only for instance)
  • 4
@incognito Well, that doesn't mean it can't have vulnerabilities so I'd still be very careful or just say fuck it and nope :P
  • 5
@linuxxx interesting, even if it's locked down to only your internal network?

Welp I'm not surprised of course, but i personally (if you want to known that of course)

I personally would love the idea of an open source self hosted Voice assistant...
(I do not know if it exists already 🤔)

@incognito Tbh I'd love to try one out!

@linuxxx i think something kike this exist, but i forgotten the name

@linuxxx actually they can't record everything, they have to chips, one just for recognizing the keywords. When this one triggers the second one, which starts the recording which is analysed by Amazon the blue ring lights up. This is achieved via hardware and can't be turned off. Also Amazon released a statement to this, saying it was unlikely, but in the dialog were some words which sounded like keywords, to be honest voice recognition is not that advanced, so Alexa just did what she understood. I think this is by far more likely than Amazon accidentally sending a recording to a contact of the couple.

@glm9637 And the software, is that checkable for all those things?
  • 2
    Oh, not the first time.
It interpretes the conversation (s), quite loosely. ;)
  • 2
@glm9637 Still not a reason to trust it.
  • 1
@linuxxx well it's almost as checkable as most open source web services.

The Alexa app actually has a list of recordings you can go through, so yeah, believable.
Guess why I will never buy one of these wiretaps.
