BigBoo23126y@Floydian Bitlocker is the "default" one. But it's only for pro licenses. Hence I would like to know if there is anything else that people use.
I'm mostly just curious though. I don't really have a windows machine right now. -
BigBoo23126y@Floydian But Bitlocker uses AES. Which is a symmetric crypto. Sure it's probably, by definition slower. The difference should be less than the faster http over https.
But I'm not here to argue with you to use encryption or not. That's completely up to you.
I just want to know what people use. -
BigBoo23126y@Floydian I'm my humble opinion.
You should use it because without it you basically grant access to everything in your computer to anyone with physical access. You think they need to be hackers or something. But all I really need is a USB stick with Ubuntu or any Linux live boot really. Boot from that and do a disk copy. Now everything you had is mine.
Do you have a password? Why bother. It only protects you from co-workers pranking you if you don't have encryption.
And if they have enough time, not even that.
That's one of the reasons I'd use encryption. There are others aswell. Like, I don't have to steal your data. But I can also insert a backdoor into your computer and film you via you webcam.
There are just too many things. And none of the are particularly complicated with physical access. But again. If that doesn't concern you. It's not up to me 😁
Np if you can't help man 😄
I'm somewhat inept with windows lol. -
BigBoo23126y@S-Homles I don't have the capability of remembering 32 byte random passwords for every site or service I use.
Maybe you have.
But I was gifted in other ways.
Also you forgot to read, it's not only about keeping secrets. It's about data integrity.
My motivation is why not? Encryption isn't slowing your machine down by a lot. Just a few clock cycles extra here and there. Maybe if your CPU is garbage I get it.
But otherwise it's like pretty much free added security which prevents both data theft and manipulation. -
CurtisMJ4656yThe only other one I know for Windows which seems worth a damn is VeraCrypt, though I can't vouch for it as I've never used it.
-
BigBoo23126y@Floydian This is a good point.
But your data doesn't get more broken just because it's encrypted. Maybe it's a few more steps. But hey. I would even be comfortable with sending it in for data recovery. It's not like they could get a hold of the unencrypted data.
I have never dealt with this though. Maybe it's a pain in the ass. I would love to know if someone had experiences with it. -
BigBoo23126y@Floydian I don't have any experience. But it will probably be a good solution for it.
I'll have to do some investigating. But I'm going to say, probably. But not sure.
