I don't understand the hype around making the web more decentralized. What makes people think that users want to host everything themselves?

Some people finally realized that when most content is delivered through platforms owned by major corporations like Facebook, Twitter and so on, the net becomes very easy to censor. Surveillance is trivial, unlike it used to be when everything was hosted on different servers owned by different entities.
I think it's good we finally start asking who is hosting our content.
I for one moved away from Facebook and started publishing my articles, most of which are political, on my own site.
Also, people snap out of their "nothing to hide" mentality and start using their brains for a change.

When the alternative is corporations making money off my personal information, it becomes a much easier sell for me, at least.

@ilPinguino the users I was referring to aren't really the ones who care where they're hosting their content. I was referring more to the general population not the Privacy niche.

@DuckyMcDuckFace Whether you refer to the 'privacy niche' or not, in this day and age where (govt) mass surveillance, although highly illegal, is happening 24/7, I don't think it's an option not to look for decentralized options anymore.

Also, privacy isn't supposed to be some kind of luxury but the fucking norm. If you're not privacy conscious then I wish you all the luck with your future.
