*login screen appears*
*enters password*
*windows says "Welcome"*
*You have entered wrong password*

Windows is smart, that's why. It is afraid that it's the admin who has mistyped his account, and if Windows bitches at him, he will replace it with Linux.

Hold enter and you'll be forever welcome.

Actually, it's a security feature, so intruders who mistype your password get a delay and don't know if they got it right.

I mean you can easily replace the password but for simple non-techy people it's a good deterrent.

Funny enough, it is kinda obvious on my system since I enabled verbose logon messages.

    "Welcome" means "wrong password"
    "Preparing Windows" means "successful login"

@filthyranter I disagree with the security feature. On other Operating Systems I see a delay when typing a wrong password but they just show a spinner or something not a confusing welcome message.

The delay is of course a brute force prevention mechanism. The welcome just stupid flow

@hjk101 The welcome is to make intruders feel successful at first :P

@filthyranter well if Windows wouldn't force stuff on you one might almost consider it polite than 😁
