It's how I started and pretty sure a lot of other Devs are in the same boat -
endor57516y+1 for Ubuntu: simple and intuitive for daily use, and lots of guides on how to do stuff. Also a good stepping stone if you later decide to go deep down the rabbit hole.

Download virtual box, install Ubuntu on a VM , play around with the system until you see it's time to install it on HDD just to prevent data loss or broken computer that needs a format.
