Ratsuky1026yThere was one time when i required a different os on a computer to facilitate communication with a prehysteric ( intended ) device and the device provided nothing else except windows xp support....worst day ever, saved all my setup scripts so it was fine in the end, but the 3 hours required to extract, save, remove, install windows were like i was killing of the last specimen of an advanced alien race and replacing it with a maggot.

Condor324966y*waits for BSD users to come out*
Personally I've only once uninstalled Linux for something else, and it was Windows on a particularly nasty piece of hardware with an Intel+Nvidia GPU hybrid in it. I've been very unsatisfied about the purchase of that machine for this reason.. it works well, it's quiet and in Windows it's driving both the internal and the second ultrawide displays really well. But Windows being forced down my throat on this host really makes me feel like this was €600 that just went down the drain. -
I did, but I didn't start with Linux. It was (simplified) something like Windows->Linux->Windows.
I just stopped caring about open source, free and all that stuff and wanted to play games instead. -
Ratsuky1026y@hiTesh i noticed that pulseudio just gets it well sorted, i have a few weird motherboards and my preferred distro is debian so never had trouble with pulse audio, although i use a nice trick i plug in deadbeat plugs on all jacks so the ports are forced active....many tell me it's stupid but it's a solution that works well.
A deadbeat plug, as i call it is just ripping a buzzer and connecting to it a number of jack cables with 5-10 cm length, i go from 3 to 8 ports to have it more comfortable but that's all that i needed to "convince" the system to recognize the device. -
Ratsuky1026y@hiTesh well if it's quality that concerns you i can make some tests when i get home on my debian machine to see how well i can get the pulseaudio to work and what settings i used to make it work well. I'm a music nut so i can't function well without music so audio quality is indeed an important priority for me also. I'll get back to you a bit later after i've done the tests.

Yeah then I replaced that os with another Linux distro lol. Distrohopping ! Was using Linux KDE mint for 2 years after they discontinued, installed Kubuntu.
Mostly plays game on windows that's all I mostly do on that os lol. -
@Condor *stares vacantly at the bright lights* *grumble grumble* BSD is the future. *slinks away*

In 2001, I dropped Windows 98 for Linux as only OS on my PC. In 2010, I ditched not only that PC, but I had become so annoyed with all the stupid Linux shit that I switched to Win7, which is hands down the best OS I've ever had.
However, by around 2020, I regrettingly will have to switch back to the Linux shit because the Win10 fuckup is even worse.
(Don't get me even started on Apple shit - I won't buy misdesigned and overpriced museum hardware.) -
@TheNickm2 No. I think that's pretty much how Linux users roll.
If you'd stuck with Ubuntu for 10 years, that would be the story here. -
jeeper59686yBack when WiFi drivers were still fiddly I had to flip back to win7 from Ubuntu cause I got tired of looking and I needed use college WiFi

I'd solely do it to checkout bsd or something.
The thing is, if it's closed source it can't be check for security vulnerabilities and/or backdoors independently as easy which is a no-fucking-go for me. -
I am still an ubuntu user, but on my next machine I will have dual boot with Windows. The drawbacks of not having it are getting heavy (in terms of external hard-/software such as Garmin, in particular).
-
@Diactoros if it's quite similar to Linux and has a broad range of packages I might even consider it. But those are requirements that's exactly what I love about Linux 😊

hjk10157316yStarted out with Linspire (previously known as Lindows but changed because of lawsuit) that was complete shit and just as restrictive as windows. Had to pay for free programs etc. So moved back to XP.
In 2004 I went native and installed Gentoo. Used that for many years. Dual boot Windows only for games.
Now I switched to arch but still use Windows at work and for some games.
There is no path back for me. Linux is by far nicer for developers and always had better UI/UX. So no way back for me.
