keyboard shortcuts.

If you threw your mouse away, could you still code very fast?

I learned all the kb shortcuts 2 years ago..

Coding shortcuts in sublime are the best

Best skill I every owned..speed of pc use is drastically improved

Put me up against any normal user and I'll have 10 typical computer tasks done before he finishes one

Could you throw away your mouse for a day?

If you can't.. I challenge you to try. Probably the best skill for getting jobs? Just guessing

    time to vimify everything!

    @heyheni

    You know what.. .. That's the last challenge I haven't gotten to yet

    I'm very fast, but still use arrow keys, like ctrl - left and shift delete.. But still..

    I think it's time...

    to put sublime...

    .. in vim mode

    *dramatic music*

    @1989 is so much faster is not even a debate

    That's like saying

    No I don't need a Ferrari, my KIA is fine

    @1989 fair enough.

    This literally depends on your daily workflow and programming language....

    If your workflow is just writing code - then you are fine, otherwise - you are not.

    @potata not true!

    @rant1ng Please tell me how would I, as a developer/support person would use no mouse while navigatin in code, emails and browser? You would say tabs? Sure, let me just skim thru 200 elements till i reach that button at the bottom :)

    Another example - say that to, for example Unity/Unreal engine developers - they depend on mouse too.

    @potata ok. The one exception

    Is web pages

    Although google.com is ok
  • 2
    @1989 Exactly! My day to day life as a programmer includes around 50% time of writing code...

    While I agree with the OP that when writing code people should look for shortcuts - there is no real benefit to remove mouse completely.

    @1989 that's a pretty wide sweeping assumption don't you think?

    you're saying that because I can kb shortcut almost everything, that I somehow have a limited understanding of programming?

    and I write much more than a page of code everyday...

    but that depends on kind of day it is, is it a planning/organization, high level thinking day, or a get it done, implement day, or a debug day?

    Yes, I do understand that.

    Do you understand how fast you can use a computer if you took the time to learn as many kb shortcuts as you could?

    I did that. And I do.

    I'm more curious as to why this somehow compels you to point out that you don't need it, and it's not needed.

    Yeah... I learned only recently about ALT + TAB... It changed my life lol

    vim will make your life easier ;)

    Jokes on you, I only have a laptio mousepad. And I don't know how to disable it fo far!

    Though most of the programs I use are vim-based

    Most of the time when I code is spent with thinking and reviewing what I wrote. It doesn't matter whether I have a mouse for that one or not.

    Nobody in a job interview cares about how many keyboard shortcuts someone has memorised.

    And no, I won't throw my mouse away because using 1980s style UIs doesn't make me a better developer.

    Random fact: you can navigate through DuckDuckGo search results with vim keys:

    j is down
    k is up
    l opens the link

    hope you don't mean bus terminal

    I’d vomit

    I’d vomit if I had to

    by the way everyone, just said throw mouse away for the day

    not forever

    just as a point, there's almost always a way to do shit faster with the keyboard, and it pays off big in the long run

    that was the point of my post basically

    What’s a keyboard? I use my mouse to copy characters from Wikipedia.

    Another fun fact: github has pretty neat keyboard shortcuts, and so does Slack.

    I'm a Unity dev and I shudder at the thought of not using a mouse in the editor. On the coding side though, shortcuts definitely streamline things.
  • 1
    Why? I cant think fast enough. Especially with autocomplete. What kind of stuff are you programming that needs so much speed?

    But yeah! Learn the damn shortcuts guys!

    honestly, everyone on here that is dogging using the keyboard heavily instead of the mouse just plain has never seen it done

    it makes no sense, all this hatred at the idea

    of course there are times when you code fast, right?

    I sometimes get in zones where I literally code up an entire system of classes, and then refactor and refactor, i'll go on for hours,.. hundres of lines of code, when I'm doing that,alt-tab alt+d type google query, alt+3 third result, ctrl-f look for specific word, alt+tab back open this file, open that file, close this, reposition that, 4 - way these 4 files, ctrl+shift+alt-4, zoom in on that pane ctrl+shift+enter.. zoom out, alt+tab, alt+4 debugger, ctrl-f5 reload, left arror + sys to switch over to devrant while it's loading, switch back, didn't work? alt-tab, alt+4 zoom in ctrl+shift+enter, ctrl+p open search new file, ctrl+r search for specific method, etc. ALL SHORTCUTS no mouse

    just me then? allllllrighty...

    @ArcaneEye

    I guess, but i'm just happy I put in the time and did it and now I reap the rewards and wanted to share and let people know how much it really improves your abilities

    sorry I guess.

    What got me started was someone challenged me to not use a mouse for a week, It sucked at first, it was slow, it took months to learn ...

    I worked hard at it, i'm proud of the skill, it truly does make you work faster.

    I should shutup about it maybe
