20+ years later and I still have my CD Key memorized from when I was a kid. My step dad would constantly uninstall it, and I'd just put it back on again.

Those games were on the shelves for forever. There was an open source project called bnetd that let you host your own battlenet servers for lan parties and it was shut down.

Blizzard is pretty anti reverse engineering and taken several groups to court over it. :(
