The reason some people prefer Regex that the hard 'g' comes from the word 'regular'.

Others choose to treat the acronym as a separate word, regardless of the context it came from.

@olback the best resolution to this conundrum is, that only one pronunciation needs an alternate spelling to be communicated in writing. The correct one is spelled as it is spoken.

You also don't here people say cag-e, orang-e, hing-e, and so on (as in pronouncing the g and then just slapping an e on the end of it).

The "ge" combination often produces a "j" like sound, such as in the previously mentioned words.

But this isn't a linguistics class, so I don't care enough to debate it. Just showing where I come from with rejex lol

Ive theard the designer of regex want it to be called rejex.

@Stuxnet Why would we pronounce it "orang-e"? The word is "orange". The "Reg" in RegEx comes from "regular", which is why it's pronounced Reg-Ex.

The English alphabet needs downsizing. The letter C needs to go, there is no point to it’s employment. Root for the Seltics and dance to Keltic music. The letter C was most certainly given a job per a political Kommittee decision.

The letter Y needs to go. There is E and I, they need the work.

G needs to stop cross dressing as a slutty little J, plain and simple.

Then we would have GIF vs JIF and regex vs rejex solved. ;-)

TL;DR: Hard G in both cases based on the abbreviated word in both cases.

Also, according to English pronunciation rules, it should be a hard "g" there, just like "ghoti" is pronounced like "ghoti," not "fish." (That stupid facebook trash post)

@Root perhaps we failed to simplify and clarify the alphabet and language whereas the Russians were successful. Russian (Bolshevik) Revolution of 1917 was both political and grammatical. At the time they also restructured the language and the government.

Imagine having every letter have exactly one sound. The brilliance was the addition of the modifier letter “b” which softened the preceding letter. An “option key” for a language.

And here I am wondering why everybody from nonegnlish speaking world is trying with english pronounciations.. 🤔 Why not pronounce it like in your native language?! Do you all really have so many international clients that it matters how you pronounce it??

And for english speaking world there will always be variations in pronounciations between brits & americans.. so why even bother?! Both correct & you should be able to understand both versions..
