I had a friend in CS in college with a higher GPA than me, got better grades in all her classes, wanted to go for her PhD. Couldn't understand a standard linked list.

I think it's just the unfortunate result of the field being predominantly men. I had a similar situation when I was taking a course with a difficult professor where everyone I knew struggled to manage a C, yet the only girl in the class got a better grade then I did when the majority of her coursework wouldn't even compile... She also had 2 internship offers after her first "Intro to Java programming" class
