I recently became manager of the student radio at my university. Our servers are extremely old and insecure, so I am currently working on getting some new servers up hosted by the university’s IT department as a replacement.

Meanwhile, a few days ago someone unauthorized have fucking accessed our server, deleted /home folder and a bunch of other shit, then cleared the history of the user. Why the fuck what someone do that? What the fuck did they achieve? What is the fucking point? That fucking piece of shit left his IP address though when he signed out from the server...

I just don’t fucking get why the fuck someone would do that? They don’t achieve a fucking shit about it, only fucks with us trying to save the radio from dying.

Like, they didn’t steal information and ask for a price to get it back. They simply just fucking deleted it and left. Why the fuck would you do that?

wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just to host your radio server on aws or google cloud?

@heyheni Exactly, you may have to wait 4years for IT to pull their finger out, plus the bunch of meetings and reports to justify funding and then there is the IT people who typically don’t do anything if its not Microsoft based.

@heyheni @helloworld Nope. The university takes care for the physical machine, everything else we do. We decide what we install and such. The university pays the bills as well, so it’s free. Further more, the internet at the university is a so-called research network, so probably the best connection you can get in the country
