Go to the local pharmacy and ask for "short term" sleep medicine, usually does the trick.

@gintko I disagree, too tired and not as interested in writing a whole lot of text about it, but basically point 2 (and final sentence) is load of bullshit and with 1 you discredited yourself, incl. taking weed as a "logical alternative" to medicine.

@gintko people with active insomnia aren't cured with smoking pot nor with "walking" nor "running" nor "swimming", it's one of those things people tend to say when they have absolutely no clue.
I am talking first hand, both about (prescriptive and non prescriptive) medicine and that it's absolute bullshit about building tolerance. -
Try reading oauth2, http, ssl,... rfc. Works for me every time. That font and page layout does magic :)

@gintko @JoshBent people are different. Some people just have a bad sleeping pattern or aren't healthy while others have issues that need medicine. Both are viable advises, but the person receiving the advice should have themselves looked at and diagnosed by a professional who can say what advice best suits them.
Oh and there a handful of people out that do build up a tolerance to these things. A friend of mine once had to use extreme sleeping pills, he should've used half and people usually sleep within seconds. After a week or so even a whole pill didn't work anymore. But it is an extremely rare case. -
Follow circadian rhythm. When you fight to stay awake it interrupts the cycle. Insomnia is the result.

@gintko @Charmesal I should know better than biting baits just before going to sleep, especially something that needs a lot of clarification for most, listing every single exception and rule of thumb there possibly is, to not leave any way for jumping jack corrections. (btw. obviously OP should consult a professional, but going to the pharmacy and describing the issue alongside a suggestion, is also a way of doing that)
My only problem and what I exclusively care about in this discussion is with people and many doctors belittling actual sleeping issues with just the old belief of "just go skydiving, walk, swim, get hit by a car", it doesn't work like that and with non-prescriptive meds you don't have the issues as with prescriptive ones either - atleast I don't know anybody that got addicted or side-effects (incl. myself) from what's essentially pressed flowers with accelerators, obviously there's somebody that choked on a pill and died, but not from the medicine itself. -

Ive never looked into sleep aids past melatonin as I don’t generally have too much trouble sleeping. As for weed, my partner uses it for pain as well as to help her sleep sometimes but it’s out of the question for me as I’m a recovering addict. Someone mentioned sex, lol that’s actually a great idea 😂😂
I usually have pretty decent sleep patterns (although who ever gets enough)and I was mostly just posting for people to commiserate cause I know there’s lots of folks up all hours of the night coding. Although I really really hope this doesn’t become a pattern 😞 -
baewulf16556yAlso I stopped taking one of my meds and started taking it again recently, I think that’s playing a huge part in my sleep lately, but I keep forgetting that and thinking I’m going crazy!

@JoshBent I'm agreeing with you that "just go for a walk" or such advice isn't viable for a lot of people.
However sleeping pills can be very addictive. Both my mother and grandmother were addicted to them.
I acknowledge its a very small sample size and not a proper research. I only want to tell you that it can happen. -

@baeovvulf it's truly one of dantes circles we share, I have never been able to stabilize my sleep for more than 2 days, no matter what I did, how exhausted I was etc. the only solution was first prescriptions and then once I was fed up with going each time to get them, I switched to the non-prescriptive alternative, which works just as fine, though note that they are sold as "short-term", so you should every now and then self-check, maybe with a doctor too.
I personally see it as a switch off button, because it makes me tired quickly enough to just not care about any possible thoughts and not waste time just laying there doing/thinking whatever - I can and do go without them at times, but it's much more relaxing to be able to just fall asleep, instead of having to stress through, what should be the relaxing time of the day. -
@Charmesal You need to clearly distinguish between heavy drugs, entry level sleep medicine and non prescriptive, I don't think there was ever a record of somebody getting addicted to the non-prescriptive ones on a physical level, maybe addicted to finally being able to just fall asleep? but not an actual drug addiction. (which the prescriptives are)
It’s almost 2am, I cant sleep, I have an early morning class that I’ve already skipped twice this week, but I just can’t make myself fall asleep... I’ve been switching from devRant to Facebook to instagram for like 3 hours just to have something to do.
Thinking about just getting up, making tea, and working on some code to at least be more productive with my time
But I have sleepy-brain and idk if I am even capable of coding right now
