why reformat? snip those 5 GB off your encrypted fs, mkfs.ext4 it, mount it over your ~/Dropbox dir, add fstab rule to automount on-boot.. Not that much of a problem you know..
-
@netikras Cam you please explain what that snips off 5 gb part means, and the fstab rule and automount...
-
@PonySlaystation @xzvf they want to use some additional meta data support in the fs, like tags in OSX. The thing is ext4 supports everything they want to use, so yeah :/
-
@phreakyphoenix It means "create an ext4 filesystem dedicated for dropbox and mount it on top of currently existing Dropbox directory; make the mount permanent with fstab".
-
@netikras Of course that would be possible, but that doesn't solve the problem, these assholes have created.
I don't have the detailed knowlege, but Dropbox uses the xattr attribute of the file system and some Linux users wrote in the forums that it is supported by encrypted ext4.
Fact is, they go the way Apple has been walking: Continuously restrict software to tighter specifications; don't care at all for broad support of hardware or platforms.
There will come a point where users have enough and jump the train.
Even SAP starts to walk the path with their "HANA certified hardware only" policy...
It's just about damn money. They all can go choke on a bag of unwashed dicks! -
Condor324966y@netikras better yet, a btrfs subvolume 🙃 but that isn't ext4 of course.
How about LUKS though? Generally I prefer that and file encryption. And that allows any filesystem to be used, so no issues with support of them.
Also, why does Dropbox need this or that filesystem? I'd thought that all network drives would be using FUSE by now. -
@Condor somehow I already assumed Pony is using LUKS for encryption.. 😁 why would anyone use anything else....?
@PonySlaystation i guess it depends on encryption type? But now I'm genuinely curious why would dbx make this move. It's does not look like a very smart move at first
