Imho we need an even better connection in the community to prevent someone rebuilding the same thing again because the original thing lacks one feature...

Except so many “consumers” find value in the exact privacy-violating “services” Google/Microsoft offer. And those services can’t really exist fully without tracking tons of personal info.

mngr9196yI always wonder... How much computational power had google to run its search engine 20 years ago?
Today I can't see any self hosted search engine, if not for meta search engines.
One day I found yaci, a distributed search engine, I tried it, but it needs a lot of work, or maybe a bigger user base.
I want to run the search-engine locally! How much network does it consume? How much memory? -
mundo0349116y@linuxxx dies nit make it right, but people are not looking for right, they are looking for popular and easy.
While I agree with creating such services (which already exist), the problem will always be getting people to use them. -
@M1sf3t well really if every ActivityPub provider would implement the OAuth Protocol we would be pretty close atleast for the social media aspect.
-
@M1sf3t yeah nobody is working at it in a unified fashion which is hurting everything in the long run. I've been putting thought into it in my spare time but all i have so far into the idea is that it needs to use ActivityPub, JWT and OpenID Connect where users can pick where they want their data to live and can easily move it if they want to. There's still the problem of each service having to register to the provider service but i haven't looked real far into it yet. I figure if a whole ecosystem gets built developers can spread the word enough where people will take the switch.
-
@M1sf3t that's the general idea. I haven't thought that much about ads at the moment though. All i know about it for sure is that the server they are reading from would be supplying ads so they could be localized if an area is hosting a federated server
-
@M1sf3t Well the problem with implementing advertising is that since it would be built with a ActivityPub system is that anybody can write an alternative client that would block the ads. which this already happens with youtube alternative clients but in this case there would be 4 or 5 alternatives cause of the opensource nature. So while it would be possible to have some kind of ad-revenue chances are you wouldn't make as much as you would normally.
-
@mundo03 mostly cause I've been looking for awhile. ActivityPub services are not working together cause it doesn't exist.

I have multiple but one of my biggest ones:
Build an entire suite of services which can replace the popular Google/microsoft/facebook (etc) services.
Of course: privacy respecting, preferrably everything possible end-to-end encrypted.
Because fuck mass surveillance and those companies and if I can do anything to fuck them (quite literally) and help people getting to user friendly alternatives, I'll do the best I can.
