Never had any problems with windows, but I do like a real rant every once in a while. β‘

stop68676yuefi is not the best thing on earth, BUT its much better than the BIOS.
with EFI we can boot linux without grub, it has support for updates without reboots and modern EFI have support for signed images. -
gruff5576yIf I don’t want the fans trying to lift the desktop I just change the profile either with software from the manufacturer or in the bios, mines real quiet. You still need the bios and it’s still there.. you tried overclocking in Windows π€£
-
Condor324966y@gruff after a few reboots they became quiet again ¯\_(γ)_/¯ perhaps it's an initialization issue. But in that case, hell even systemd isn't that terrible π

C0D4681386yI thought that was just my laptop that fails to power off on shutdown or reboot.
Fucker just sits there powered up spinning fans and led for wifi on, yet the HDD has powered off (its a loud, ticking bomb of chance - so I can hear when it’s not on anymore) and screen off. -
gruff5576yI think it is to do with power management states, mine occasionally doesn’t wake from a sleep properly
-
C0D4681386y@Condor always user errorπ
Actually I was starting to think this old girl was on her death bed, but some updates fix it, others recause it, and I only ever see it start mucking up directly after that horrifying “we are updating god knows what” screen -
cave8746yFeels relatable, I gave up on UEFI a long time ago, I use ssh with a dedicated Linux server now instead, much less stress, just a bit more laggy.
-
Condor324966y@gnulinuxer4fun glad to hear that I'm not the only one π
.. even Michael does π -
Condor324966y@Nanos the web app (and perhaps the API? Not sure) allow only 1k chars, while the Android app (perhaps the iOS app as well) allow 2k.. not sure why π€
-
Condor324966y@Haxk20 well yeah in Linux it's all hunkey dorey and I quite like having lm_sensors and/or fancontrol. But that's only because the operator is in charge and usually these things work pretty well in Linux.
It's Windows' inability to do these basic things - ACPI shutdown, fan control, responding to presses on the power button, keeping something as stupidly standard as USB running without fucking it up for God's sake, those are the things that infuriate me so much. -
Condor324966y@Haxk20 for the millionth time, that turd of a machine doesn't want to boot any Linux, and even on the ancient Manjaro release with Linux 4.7.6, I would've had to sacrifice my Nvidia card, and even with 2 monitors at 1920x1080, compositing was glitchy, and with the secondary monitor now being 2560x1080, the X server doesn't want to render on both displays at all.
-
Condor324966y@Haxk20 sorry, it just gets really tiring that I have to explain it all the time.. perhaps I should make a FAQ for this kind of stuff π
-
Condor324966y@Insomniac-coder yeah, it seems to be an issue in both Nvidia and AMD hybrids.. if only I knew this when I bought this machine back in 2015 π° at least spreading of the warnings against it might save some poor soul that's currently (or somewhere in the future) deciding on their new Linux PC from making the same mistake.. or wait for Bumblebee to finally start working somewhat decently. I have a dream...
-
@Condor bumblebee ππππ
Sometimes Linux don't bode well with your HW
I google the hw issue and tha result left me blank
Ironically My old Laptop with Pentium processor gives better user experience than my new i7 Laptop -
@Condor
Are you by any chance using an x399 board?
I had a similar problem there, which was caused by Raid-Controller drivers... -
Condor324966y@pyrestone no, that particular machine is an Acer Aspire ZC-700 AIO machine with some laptop-style motherboard in it. I don't think that this thing even has RAID support π€
Thanks for the suggestion though! π
Whoever designed UEFI, FUCK YOU!! Giving the OS control over every fucking thing in the hardware instead of letting the BIOS do that separately, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT FUCKING MIND THOUGHT THAT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA?!!
And same goes to fucking you Microsoft! How difficult is it to do a fucking ACPI shutdown and do it properly?! How fucking difficult is it to not make the fans spin like jet engines because why the fuck not?! And yes the fucking PC is dust-free and bloat-free so I don't want to see any fucking Wintard comment that.
You know where else I saw the inability to power down? In Linux 4.20-rc2. A kernel that is within active development, and rc2 at that!! A kernel branch that's designed to be unstable, for testing purposes. Meanwhile the stable branch of MS Windows does the same. Also designed to be unstable because fuck QA?! Filthy fucking motherfuckers!!
rant
i don't have time for this shit windows!!!
