Is it just me or does 16GB RAM feel like overkill on Linux?
I've only seen the RAM usage go up to 6GB at most.

Kinda wish I could just take that 8GB card and stick it into my desktop.

And you call your self a programmer 😢
How can you not be using 16/16GB of ram?

I’m joking, even in Windows I cruise along with 8-12GB.

Make up a use case for a virtual machine.

I have 16, have seen FF or Chrome eat 9.

32GB here, Manjaro, running builds and VMs, totally worth it.

Start using vagrant and your lack of ram usage will turn into a lack of ram. Oh, and Chrome plus the JetBrains tools. That can be another 4 gigs on the pile.

Depends on what you're working at. I commonly run local database, cache, mail, and search servers, because I work on backend apps a lot of the time.

If you have 16 of course programs will eat up a lot, but it doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t be just fine with half of the. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. I have 52 gigs in my desktop (long story) and never managed to go above 12 even under massive workloads.

More RAM is always nice under Linux as it can use stuff for disk caching.

    Install virtual box then.

I felt restricted by anything less than 32Gb RAM in my previous Windows dev machines and would never have dreamed of buying an "ultrabook". These days I'm perfectly happy with the 8Gb RAM in my personal Linux dev machine and daily driver.

@irene I bought a used Dell workstation, but it arrived with less RAM than advertised. I got in touch with the seller and he sent me like a kilo of ECC modules. So I tried to pair them in the best possible way, and it came down to 52 (8 pairs of various sizes)😂

If you use Chrome, you'll know why
