It's popular because it's solving problems that other approaches couldn't, and now we actually have the compute power to apply it.
As for you not finding not interesting, why don't you give it a go? The algorithms and math behind most of that stuff is pretty cool. -
well, the math behind big data is mostly just a huge more-of-the-same
what may be fascinating are eventually the technological challenges enabled by modern processing power and network speeds.
handling data, moving it, sorting it, filtering it, fetch it, manipulate massive grids of systems seamlessy organised, deal with concurrency and "clusterisation"...this is a freaking challenge! god level optimisation of algorithms and other black magic
this is truly informatics to the bone: comparing stuff and deal with the emerging information
