There’s no reason why counting should start at 0. Indexes should, however, start at 0.

counting != indexing

If we need a variable to track the number of some events, we initialize it with 0. As soon as the first event occurs, we increment the variable to 1. So we begun counting with 1 and the variable correctly reflects be number of events. And that only works when the initial value is 0. This is my view on the whole story of starting with 0 or 1.
