Just got a new soldering iron set for xmas, courtesy of my uncle. I went to use it to hardmod a PS2. Good news: PS2 hardmodded for easy discswap and SwapMagic with original ejector. Bad news: the iron barely made it through that before oxidizing to unusability. Even after I properly wiped the tip off with a damp, clean rag before and during use, it still corroded to s**t in seconds once power was applied. (No, refiling and tinning didn't help. The solder layer oxidized too.)

Soldering irons rust to dust in my hands in seconds. Every time. Even when taken care of properly. f**k me...

    What the fuck?
    Was it like 1$ iron?
    I recommend buying a proper station so you wont have to worry about it anymore...

    PS. I have a mod chip in my ps2. Oh i still remember the time when i played that 😅, those were the times when i could actualy aim with the controler... but after that i got a better pc and what i can say... more free games + better graphics, and mouse is always superior 😀

    Luckily the tips are replaceable

    Don't use a damp sponge during operation. The temperature shock can damage the tip and reduce its lifetime.

    @7400 isn't that what you're supposed to do tho?

    @Haxk20 Kit's like $100, apparently. I need a portable set, so that's what he got me.

    @electrineer It came with several, so that's true...

    @Gregozor2121 It's actually nice. It's got a temp knob, the case doesn't get nearly as hot as my last one, it's a precision iron (I needed one), and it has a bunch of other stuff included with it.

    @Parzi: Nope, the sponge is only for wiping the tip when it's cold. One of my soldering stations even came with a warning label stating that.

    @7400 I was always taught you wipe it with something damp while it's on every once in a while...

    Better use one of these brass wool thingies for wiping when it's hot.

    @7400
    Thanks m8! Didnt know about that!
    I dont use sponges anymore cuz they suck, they dont remove the solder...
    So i bought few steel wool cleaning thinges and they work like a charm.
    I should propably get a better flux than a rosin...
