From watching the movie Amadeus (1984) (Mozart) I realized how backward the job market is and how it never changed:

Mozart's dad: "I cannot possibly hire this girl without references!"

It's even more stupid nowadays. Now they made it illegal to hire based on feeling. lol. I mean, that's good, yeah.

Why do you need references for hiring someone anyway? Bad economy? Lack of trust in humans in general?

    @jestdotty Hhh, you dare! lol. I'm.. I'm so honest. I am. :o

I (as a developer) was on the "hiring side" 4 times and in 2 cases the hired applicant revealed as incompetent.

Carrying such a person in the team is a burden for all the competent colleagues. Getting rid of that person again is also such a huge effort, that I totally understand, why it makes sense to evaluate properly and be cautious.

And of course there will always be those "false negative" cases where opportunities are missed. But it's not that easy.

(I am not saying anything about your competence, just wanted to make a point, that a cautious approach is something I totally can understand)

@CaptainRant yeah and the honest get penalized

AI told me the other day 74% of applicants studied had admitted to lying to get a job

my bf keeps telling me to make up jobs I had and that he'll pretend to be a reference they can call. it makes me depressed that evidently to not die I'd have to do that otherwise I'm unhirable -.-

    welcome to society

AI said it was "bad" to lie but admitted you get hired at a much better rate if you do. just said "long-term" it's a bad plan because "you'll be discovered". yeah nobody gave a shit about my competence at a job, just if I asskissed irrationally like everybody else or not. and relative to me other devs I worked with did not seem to know fundamentals and wrote pretty unnecessarily inefficient code and nobody cared because nobody in management can read code so that's not a metric they judge you on. not to mention their standards were that something that would take me 3 days to make would take 6 months to make and etc

@jestdotty @jestdotty I know, I see the most dishonest slimeballs get hired based on bravado.

    Damn, that percentage is high.

I'm not sure about the job pretending.

    Yes

To me, I try instead to sell the CV as best as I possibly can, with the help of A.I., but if racism and ageism are in the way, then it becomes quite difficult indeed. I did see a lot of ass-kissing at my previous job. It was insane. On my previous teams, the serious teams judged me on code quality but the senior and management as well only cared about performance and client relations. The stupid managers rely on the crooked senior devs to hear if a project is going well or not. Well, imagine if that senior dev doesn't like you (which is often the case), then you are screwed.

Damn, you are a fast one.

@CaptainRant yeah they had an architect once estimate a task and cuz I did it so fast he got chewed out... imo should've just given me a raise. I also fixed up his designs after I was done because they were incomplete

    but alas

    so toxic -.-

@jestdotty Definitely a promotion was due! Toxic, toxic... yes yes.

I would not trust perfect CVs/applicants - it's better to know how to support a person in a job.

me and my colleagues in the team know each other for years now. We know each ones deficits and strengths at the same time. Accordingly tasks and projects are spread. A-Team style. I love it.

By the way: why are github accounts with public repos/projects/examples not a good reference anymore?

I guess even an AI could validate the quality of a repo...
