I like this week’s topic, since I’m currently wondering whether or not to study software engineering. Currently working as a software developer, uneducated, but kind of want to build onto it. Any advice from you novice DevRants?

In your position, I think it really just boils down to whether or not a piece of paper means something to you. A degree is likely to help you get a job as a developer if you're brand new in the industry but if you already have years of experience it's likely not going to make much of a difference (from what I gather from developer friends that weren't educated to be developers)

@Elyz Thank you a lot Elyz for your response. That’s actually what I hear most often, which is also what makes me doubt the choice a little bit. I would like to try working in larger companies at some point, but I have this understanding that education is mandatory those places.

@PoliteRanter69 maybe you could talk your boss into paying for some courses for you? You know, get some certifications in some things, that'll look good on your resume without requiring you to go through the whole mess that is university.

@Elyz that’s actually not a bad idea. I could give it a try at least. Do you think a few certificeres would be equivalent, or rather, sufficient? Maybe combined with the few years of gathered experience it is. Thanks again Elyz +1

@halliFacks so what I imagine is something similar to a large stack of job applications, of really qualified people. In the middle is my CV without any relevant education on it. It just gets tossed instantly, end of story.

Writing this, I realize that my confidence may not be at its highest at the moment.

I’m interested I’m hearing more about your experience at a larger company, if you don’t mind.

Thanks a lot for your replies @halliFacks, and your kind offer to look things over – I’m sure that would be really valuable. I’m not currently applying for any jobs, so it might not make sense to look it over. Thanks a lot anyways, best wishes.
