Before we talk about building 5G-networks, how about we first get fucking 2G everywhere.
You guess right, I'm from Germany.

It shouldn't be that way. Maybe you want '2G speeds'. Backward support is a pain. The 5G network should be up and running. If you really want 2G, then the effort can instead be put on deploying the latest generation of mobile networks which from studying I think is going to last for a long time.

Someone important said about the politics "we shouldn't focus on putting our industry services in the cloud. What is it worth having it in the cloud with no means to access it in a fast way?"

He was referencing the poor internet connection in wide parts of the country. Sadly, we are a third-world-country if it comes to that.

5G just sounds bad for your health.

I disagree partially. The currently available technology is 4G. The most of the current problems could be fixed with it and users will benefit from.
2G is old, slow and inefficient, why build it?

5G on the other hand is a technology _mostly_ to solve futures problems. End users might have 5G clients in 5 years and an available and reliable network in 15 years.

Most contracts that are cheap enough for students don't have 4g support and there are still places in Germany where I don't even have fucking gsm.

@metamourge I'm in Germany, too and had those contract type a few years ago.
This specific situation with those contracts is bad, but this could (probably should) be fixed with by law (something like 'all mobile data contracts have to allow the newest technology' or so).

I don't believe it will be solved by law.
Years ago, the government choose to let private companies decide the future of our digital infrastructure.
And how did it end?
There are still entire villages that have close to zero mobile coverage.

nothing beats working in my hometown in Germany for a few days on a 2mbit internet connection! it's a digital 3rd world country

Yeah. Having like 300 Mbps down and 30 up on my own connection here in Austria, but my father in Germany can get 16 Mbps and a 2.5 Mbps upload at best - and that's even good for Germany's standards!

Why does germany have an internet problem?

@hubiruchi The problems in Germany are:

- People live over the whole country and are less likely to live in a bigger city (in which internet and mobile coverage is _usually_ fine), so fixing the current state is expensive
- Low regulatory motivation to actually improve the coverage: While 90% (or was it 95 or 99%?) of the _households_ have to have mobile coverage until date x, providers will not build mobile cells for streets or sparsely populated areas
- Idiotic decisions: In the 90s, politicians explicitly decided against building fiber, instead giving money for normal cables
