Root797675yProblem #1 with that solar power 'article': transmission loss. Sure, you can generate basically as much power as you like using solar panels, but you can't transfer it far enough thanks to wire resistance. There are sadly no superconductors that work in outside temperatures/conditions, so this problem isn't going away anytime soon. So, build lots of solar farms wherever feasible! Except...
Problem #2: Cost. Solar panels are expensive and not very efficient; they also don't last forever. Tesla panels are better, but this is still an issue. If someone manages to make them significantly cheaper and more efficient or longer lasting, there's still the issue of...
Problem #3: Ecological impact. Solar panels get very very hot, as in hot enough to kill birds flying over them. The ground underneath them is likewise baking and will kill everything. Walls help keep ground creatures away, but there's no effective deterrant for birds that doesn't have other serious downsides. (e.g. netting can catch and trap the very birds it's trying to save. plus it traps basically anything blowing in the wind, like plastic bags.)
There's also:
Problem #4: legal and political bullshit, like power company monopoiles that oppose anything that might cut their profits or harm their monopoly status.
Anyway.
The idea is great, but it's not feasible.
(There's also the question of storage for nighttime, but hey, that's what hydroelectric and geothermal is for, right?)
