my problem with gaming in linux is not really inherent to linux.

my problem is that there are no linux game torrents.

and torrenting for me is a way to know if I'll be playing a certain game for a while, and eventually buy it.

I can watch all the trailers in the world for a game, but I truly make up my mind after the first few hours of direct playtime.

so I'm not interested in spending money on a game that I might like because it looked nice on the trailer only to find out I hate playing it.

the problem with torrents is that once users get the game, and the game works, they're probably like
"why bother buying it? the game works right? why risk losing the progress i achieved so far by moving save files?"

on top of that on linux, you need to check protondb to see how compatible the game you found is, so an extra layer of difficulty.

I guess I would like to have legal demo versions of games, but I see very little devs doing that so maybe that commercial model failed? I don't know really.

(there's also the users that torrent with the purpose of not paying a single dime, ofc)

Can't you just buy them on Steam and get a refund if they suck? I don't play games anymore, but I heard this is possible.

At least if you really want to spend money on a game ;)

@sboesch "I'll buy the game later" biggest lie ever ;)

You can use Proton from the command line to run most cracks.
    ;)

Have you tried running non-Linux games in Wine?

@shoop are you sure? I have the impression that it's not as bad, but I can't find any good measurement.

@spaulder well yes, that's what proton is in a way...

@shoop I have no idea why it isn't working for you, but I actually get more FPS on Linux than on Windows. ^^
Did you have an up-to-date driver installed?

You can ask for steam refund if you played less than 2 hours.
2 hours seems like a good amount to try the game

@sboesch @NoToJavaScript thank you guys for the idea, I will definitely try the refund idea

@TheCommoner282 if a simpleton like you considers me a thief, then I'll wear that title proudly.

@TheCommoner282 You really need to stop seeing things so entirely black and white. Not everyone that uses torrents is a thief.
Find me a demo of any modern game, for example Subnautica, that I can use to make sure it runs on my PC. You can't, and that's the exact problem.

@PrivateGER There are demos. It's called the steam 2 hour refund policy.

@AntiElephant Nope. I had enough cases of Steam rejecting my refund requests randomly. I'm not doing that. It's not a good system for testing a game.

I still use torrents, but for movie/tv shows.
I have Netflix and amazon prime (Via friend’s account). I never use them. It is faster for me to download or stream torrent directly (ty Soda player)

@TheCommoner282 In my opinion the immoral thing isn't torrenting, or breaking the law. There are terrific laws, laws that are best dealt with by breaking them. No. The immoral thing is enjoying a game without supporting the developer. And, to reverse it, an equally bad thing is making people pay for a game which they don't enjoy, or which they can't even run at all.
