Just saw Time magazine's cover
Person of the year 2019: Greta Thunberg

What the fuck did she do to deserve that????

It's time someone acknowledge a developer/techie as a person of the year.

There was automation, spaceX and many more advancement in the field of technology. Why does it feel like technology is always taken for granted.

Not to sound to sexist with that comment. But, living in Sweden (one of the most developed country) and telling the world leaders go fuck themselves is not an achievement.

You misunderstand the "Person of the Year" title. It only means the person or thing (yes, object can be chosen) that had the most impact (i.e. made people talk) this year.

Just for your information, there have been far more controversial choices:

"Time magazine points out that controversial figures such as Adolf Hitler (1938), Joseph Stalin (1939 and 1942), Nikita Khrushchev (1957) and Ayatollah Khomeini (1979) have also been granted the title for their impacts."

Do not also forget that the "Time" is an American magazine. As such, it has the same bias as the general population.

Quote explaining that better than I could:

"As a result of the public backlash it received from the United States for naming Khomeini as Man of the Year in 1979, Time has since shied away from using figures who are controversial in the United States for commercial reasons, fearing reductions in sales or advertising revenue."

    @BlackOrange couldnt agree more

@electrineer going to school instead of skipping it. She's an Antifa member and I was never in a extremist group. Just some possibilities. And pleas don't tell me you think she deserves any of the political pandering she receives for being a girl, young, mentally ill (depression), not able to defend her viewpoints in discussions (selectivmutism) and being on the spectrum.

Friendly reminder that politics is against the rules. Keep it on point, boys.
  • 7
@Jilano She wasn't the most talked about person of the year though. As much as I dislike the guy, it was definitely Trump. The entire world was talking about him from start to finish this whole year. Greta Thunberg really only showed up way late into the year in terms of highly talked about.

just saying: we had no global warming problem when we were sacrificing virgins to gods of weather
so don't say she is useless

Greta Thunberg had certainly more media coverage this year than SpaceX, so I don't even understand that argument.

Also, I guess we all tell our political leadership to go fuck themselves all the time, right, but none of us does so right in front of them in the UN assembly or the World Economic Forum in Davos.

What she did, you asked? Well everything that is necessary to actually speak out right IN these heavily guarded gatherings.

Given how many 16 year olds with bad school attendance did NOT speak in these meetings, I'd guess that just not attending school isn't quite sufficient to get there.

Also the FFF demonstrations with millions of people - who started that? I'd call that influential. Whether it makes sense or not is irrelevant, it's influential either way.

@Gregozor2121 You think I discriminate against her? Her character is some what unlikable, but that's her parants fault for not raising her properly and feeding her "the end is nigh if we don't implement socialism" message.
No, what I really dislike about the situation is how she and espacially her conditions are abused for clicks, political gain and as a shild from criticism.
Everithing you say is not criticism but a attack on her disabilities. She has no idea about caus and effect of climate change and certainly her only solution is socialism, because, and she addmited it, it's not about the climate, it is about racism, sexism and all that stuff.
Other people tell her these things and her selectivmutism does not even let her hear counterarguments.
It is sad that we fall back to "think of the children" in a science based debate. And then they use those "vulnerable children" for political gain and give them depression in the process. Very supportive of them.

they even argued about giving her the nobel peace prize, like for what? For telling something everyone already knows?

@p100sch true people don't want to see reality. They see a young girl as this heroic figure of change instead of ACTUALY doing something.

    @TitanLannister I'm with you!

    "HOW DARE YOU!!!"

Yeah, not sure who to pick on the tech side. Don't know the names of movers and shakers and innovators.
  • 4
@p100sch She doesn't have to have a firm grasp on climate cause and effect stuff. That's what we have fucking SCIENTISTS for. The thing is that these scientists are IGNORED.

So either we have a total fraud going on like in these gender pseudo sciences and that's why these scientists are being ignored, or we are going to have a big problem.

So what, just ignore sciencists when we don't want to hear them? Newsflash, cause and effect don't care about whether we like them or not, that's what science is all about, largely.

@Fast-Nop There was a few guys that did fake studies to see how hard it was to get studies into papers. They found that if they followed a pattern of PC related content they could get ANYTHING published. As long as the studies hit the talking points for gender, sexism, or any other in vogue stuff then they got accepted. One of the studies was about sexual tendencies related to park dog humping:

    https://wweek.com/news/schools/...

So papers are getting submitted and accepted not based upon actual science, but political correctness.
  • 1
@Demolishun Yeah I know, the whole gender "science" in itself is a hoax, not just individual studies.

But the question is: is that the same for climate science? Because Greta is just saying what nearly 100% of climate scientists say their data support.

Nobody here seems to have heard of the HK protestors. Time magazine opened up for people to vote who should be person of the year. HK protestors was going very strong.

    But...

Time magazine has been bought by Salesforce, who wants to enter the China market. They don't want to upset China. So there you go, the climate change girl got it.
  • 3
@ctrl-alt-del HK protestors are not "a person", as seen from the plural alone, and picking out one of them for a trophy would be most unwise for him and his family.
  • 1
@Fast-Nop I dunno man. Honestly I couldn't care less about "person of the year" stuff. Whether they take the "person" as an actual person or just a representative image, it's up for them.

It's the fact that China's threat and influence is everywhere. That's is disturbing.
  • 1
@ctrl-alt-del Well yeah of course the whole thing is just more media buzz about who had most media buzz, but if they make it "a person", it would be even more stupid to take a (hopefully) anonymous crowd.

Also, China indeed has a scary influence these days. That's how the rest of the world has felt for decades with US bullying. ^^

Using children as human shields for political or other purposes is despicable. Especially children with mental problems.
  • 2
Nobody gives a fuck about time magazine or Greta blah blah. Y'all bother yourself with what you choose to bother yourself with.

It declared woman of the year a man with gender dysphoria and you worried about this year we have a level 999999999.3 vegan that only eats organic grown sun rays (but still travels in fosile fueled vehicles)

    What have Greta Thunberg done?

She effectively started the Fridays for Future movement:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

"The 2019 Global Week for Future was a series of 4500 strikes across over 150 countries, focused around Friday 20 September and Friday 27 September. Likely the largest climate strikes in world history, the 20 September strikes gathered roughly 4 million protesters, many of them schoolchildren, including 1.4 million people on strike in Germany. On 27 September, an estimated 2 million people participated in demonstrations worldwide, including over 1 million protesters in Italy and several hundred thousand protesters in Canada."

    Pretty significant in other words.

@gloslistan Made of the face of more likely than started. The yellow jackets were out on the streets long before that. Its been years. She was probably ten when this started.
  • 1
@Demolishun Only that the yellow jackets in France had nothing to do with Fridays for Future. On the contrary, they started over tax increases on fossile fuels - and not 10 years ago, but in November 2018.

On the other hand, Greta first dropped school attendence because of climate stuff in August 2018.
  • 0
@Fast-Nop Over climate stuff? That is interesting. Do you have a source?
  • 1
@Gregozor2121 The German "taz" reported on 27 Aug 2018 about Greta on school strike with a sign "Skolstrejk for klimatet". Referencing a tweet of Greta's from the same day.
