What's your experience turning a raspberry pi into a NAS server?

What did you use? And any resources you can share?

I just installed pivpn with wire guard and pihole on mine lol

Maybe the 4GB version so it can handle the streaming buffer but yea, no I wouldn't do it.

If you don't mind that it's slow (even the new version with 1 Gbit Ethernet as there is no USB3) than it's really awesome! You can do everything you want with it and make it the new central hub of your network!

@Benedikt The new one has both, real Gigabit (over PCIe) and USB 3.

I used Samba, which provides file shares mountable by any OS.

Use an external USB hard drive to store your files, as SD cards are slow and only have a limited lifetime.

But then there should be no reason left why the Raspberry Pi couldn't be a decent NAS.

And I need a new Pi...

If you really want to do that, at least use the BananaPi.

USB 3.0 is fast enough for the average harddrive.

@pythonInRelay I just flashed my Raspberry Pi with it. Looks cool. SAMBA is working fine and streaming 1080p comfortably.

next, I am gonna get a torrent client running that thing (qbittorrent) and piss off my ISP in the process 😂

@sbiewald Seems like they changed it with the Pi 4, but all other Raspberry Pis shared a single data connection between the LAN and USB connectors, making everything incredibly unviable for use as NAS.

@pythonInRelay thanks for suggesting dietpi. It's been good so far aside from some SMB Auth issues.

@pythonInRelay so I gave up on dietpi and reinstalled a basic rasbian with no desktop environment and enabled everything I needed myself.

Also using jellyfin as the media server which is super cool and has good performance when streaming 1080p.

My media server is almost done now 😊

@pythonInRelay well if it makes this any better.. I gave up on the raspberry pi too. I dug up an old laptop and I have jellyfin hosted in a docker container on it. the encoding performance is much better.
nothing against dietpi. If I ever get the RPi 4 or a more powerful chip, I will definitely use it. It is an impressive project.
