Today I had a look at the Linux kernel on GitHub. There was a commit made by someone else which I tried to comment on. But my comment was not getting added— probably because it is not my PR. Is this a feature or a bug ?

    The GH repo is only a mirror, synced from kernel.org.
    Comments wouldn't make sense, as dev correspondence seems to happen largely on mailing-lists.

    @ItsaMeTuni What else? Everything since mailing lists that became significantly popular among internet users is proprietary and relies on a centralized message archive, both of which should be avoided.

    @Lor-inc why not host something like gitea? Practically the same as GitHub, free, open-source.

    @ItsaMeTuni linus explained it somewhere. The current workflow with multiple who review the commits is not replicatable with github/bitbucket/gogs/gitea/...

    @stop In reality, it's because Linus doesn't want it to change, and so it won't change. They could make it work, but he's too much of a stubborn arse to look at shifting it.

    @AlmondSauce that's not fully true.

    Linux development is very complicated.

    Daniel Vetter wrote an excellent article why GitHub isn't an option.

    @IntrusionCM Oh they couldn't just shift "as-is" - that much is clear. But I struggle to believe they couldn't transition to a more modern workflow somehow by adjusting how they work - there's likely just no desire to.
