This is accurate.
I know a guy who used to get super grades at school in programming and sysadmin classes. When I asked him how he is that good, he just told me that he pretended to be that good, but actually didn't know most of the time what he was talking about because he improvised a lot.

"Fake it till you make". That quote seems to be on point.
