Explain to me what is in the 1.6Gb Adroid Studio download because I've spent the last 3 nights downloading a gazillion extra things over my 28 kbps satellite connection and I still have not managed to actually do anything yet.

Silly me, I thought if I get the Studio with SDK bundle that would be enough. Sigh.

Unless you're an astronaut on the ISS: Can't you ask someone with a decent internet connection to download and send it on a memory usb stick?

@heyheni Yeah I can go to town in daytime and go get stuff, but this is my evening project and town is far away down a nasty dirt road. Also, I can't seem to get everything.. there is always something else that is still needed.

I suspect astronauts have faster internet than me :(

This is fascinating to me. Where do you live?

@drRoss Beautiful South Africa. Where my lovely 1Mbps ADSL line got stolen and now I'm stuck with this crappy sattelite connection :(

@lumeshadow can't you have higher rates with the satellite connection ?
  • 0
@skonteam It gets extremely expensive. This 1mbps (not Mbps) uncapped connection already costs me about $150 per month. To double the rate costs more than twice as much. As I understand it, South Africa has the highest data costs in the world.

@lumeshadow Someone stole your internet connection? How is that possible?!
  • 2
@drRoss they steal the copper cable and sell it for scrap. Most rural areas have no landlines left.

And where there was fibre, they stole that and weaved little mats to sell to the tourists.

    Life in Africa :)

@lumeshadow I would not be able to handle that...

@dfox is that a story to be told?

@drRoss we learn to be very very patient... Or we rant!

@drRoss This is what is left of my landline..

@lumeshadow Are you staying there for a reason or..?

@drRoss yeah it's my home :) We have a lovely property in the mountains. Just a pity about the internet :)

@lumeshadow Is your internet provider not obliged to fix?
  • 1
@drRoss they've given up replacing cables.. now peddling satellite.. 1Gb per month for over $150.. we went for a competitor.. same price but uncapped. Ah well. I do love living here :)

@lumeshadow I'd go out of my mind at that speed!
