@Letmecode Okay, let's imagine you are writing some CS exam. Next to you is an Asian colleague (and they are said to be excellent at everything, especially techinal subjects) and upon first inspection of the tasks you hear him mutter a word of despair -> "Fuck". Thus you conclude ( you haven't taken a look at the exam yet because it's just been handed out) that if this seems hard for the Asian kid you'll certainly have difficulties with it too. Makes sense ?

@Letmecode Asians are stereotypically really smart so people copy from them. When they say 'fuck' it means that they show distress, which means they can't do it. If they can't do it you can't stereotypically do it either because you can't copy from the smart kid.

@Letmecode You were the one who spoiled the party by calling this joke and myself racist. I had no intention of being racist even though I am 100% aware that there are stereotypical elements to this joke (going so far as to say that this is racist/xenophobic is a step too far I think).

Well guess what, jokes tend to have elements of cynicism and judgmental predispositions, that's one area where we can have some fun and laugh about the dark sides of life without really meaning it. I grew up to two parents from two different continents and I have no problem with stereotypical things that are said about me as long as they are in a clearly humorous context.

@Letmecode I am well aware of your intention. And in general I think you didn't mean to be condescending or "spoil" the joke. It's just that this is meant to be nothing but a joke and not an insult at anybody in any way. I think it's very natural for us humans to be stereotypical. The way in which we interpret them personally is the real issue.

@thecritic being labeled anything based on ethnicity is racist. Even if you attribute someone positive qualities, it is still wrong. That is not saying anything about how the person being labeled is being affected, but to assume qualities in a person by only looking at ethnicity, or for that matter gender, is not correct, it's not useful, and it is dangerous in the long run.

@penderis women are not bad drivers in any sense thar really matters. They hurt themselves and other people to a significantly lesser degree than male drivers.

@siljamicke Look, it's statistically proven that Asians are more likely to be hard workers and more educated than the general public (US). In that sense there is a certain amount of bias towards believing that it's likely if you encounter an Asian that he/she's a hard worker. Assuming that all Asians are hard workers is wrong and compartmentalising them equally so, but I also think that it's ethically wrong to think that just because they are part of one group that they cannot equally be part of the group that we all belong to as individuals. So in a sense, they are said to have some additional positive attributes and not exclusively those attributes. I'm tired of defending my point here, it's just a little joke, I'm sure all members of this community are clever enough not to interpret this in a negative way. If there's anybody who feels offended by this I am willing to delete it, but seriously it's just a joke.

It is not all black and white, excuse the pun. the best thing i take from this is to make light of matters is something we all need. I promise you those who make light of it are more likely to defend others when it does matter. those who jump on there high horse are the sketchy ones. @thecritic, sorry it's not personal. It's just that I've been recently made aware of just how insanely biased we are. For instance, you say that "it has been proven that Asians are hard working". Has it ever occurred to you that US residents might be lazy and Asians might just be normally working. And sure a joke is a joke, but sadly stereotypical humour, funny or not, factually correct or not, serves to cement these stereotypes, and little by little they affect our ability to make unbiased judgements about fellow humans.
Luckily, there are still lots of funny jokes that doesn't rely on having to be ignorant about these things :-) Ever heard the one about "there's 10 kinds of people..."...

@penderis i hear ya. I'm actually not a hypocrite. I'm just a bit vocal atm since I've just started to understand. I'm like a Linux user after two weeks who has to let everyone know how superior Ubuntu is to Windows. But I'm doing my very best to live as I preach.

@penderis haha, I didn't say definitely that Americans are lazy. I merely proposed an hypothesis, that the research cited (not really cited...) interpreted their results in a biased manner. If some research finds that Asians work harder than Americans it is not proved that Asians are hard working. That's all I'm saying.

I am sure they work harder than the lazy pricks in my country. They can get a best achievers award at the next united nations or something. Just to shame all the other whiney countries.

@siljamicke Yeah i get the being vocal, the devs on my twitter these days have all been posting a crap load of biased this and that stories from the conferences, it is kinda just pissing me off though. Being removed from such things by working solo does not help my empathy.

@siljamicke Of course it's true that US citizens in general are lazier when compared to Asians, that's just a fact that emerges from statistical analysis (when compared as a whole respectively). As I said, I'm of the opinion that there's only a problem in strictly segregating them, i.e. the belonging to any one "grouping" should not be regarded as mutually exclusive. Therefore, the mere assumption that Asians are harder workers is a non-issue in my opinion. It's just an additional positive. I don't see how this could ever be a negative attribute. It's like being an employee in a company who earns less because they are not performing as well as their managers or higher positioned workers, isn't that compartmentalisation too (even if it's clearly a positive attribute of the higher level staff to have earned that position ?)?. The connection to the race is clearly present, that's because in their culture there is a tendency that being a hard worker is regarded very positively.

@thecritic, my point is that even positive attributes can act negatively. A female co-student suffered from the fact that she was wrongly attributed with organizational skills, solely based on the fact that she was female. It is a positive trait to be skilled in organizing, right. The problem for her was that she was not a skilled organizer, so she failed at that, and because she was appointed organizational tasks, she was excluded from more engineering related tasks, for which she was better suited than the majority of the male students. The whole experience just made her feel insecure in every aspect. Positive bias can be equally harmful.

@thecritic the key is when you decide the Asian guy is a hard worker, before or after you actually know so.
If you find out after he demonstrates it, fine he is a typical Asian guy.
If you believe he is a hard working guy before he demonstrates the fact, that's prejudice.

@siljamicke I acknowledge the point that if a person is held to higher standards that this might have negative repercussions on him/her relative to what he/she's expected to be. But I don't think an employer is going to punish an Asian worker for not really being a hard worker. If he's not hard working then he's just a normal working person, that's it. There is a misinterpretation issue originating in stereotypical thinking but as I said I don't think this will result in negative treatment whatsoever. It's just like hiring somebody from Stanford and expecting them to perform to a certain degree only to find out that he/she's performing like others with degrees from a similar institution.

@thecritic well, I think there is a difference between being a Stanford graduate and being Asian. One is a degree that is meant to represent a certain level of education, the other is a place of birth.
An Asian guy with a Stanford degree on the other hand... That is something to count on, for sure! :-D

@thecritic the more you continue to defend your joke, the more logs you will feed to the fire of the social (politically correct) justice who can't take a joke for what it is. Do you really believe all these people don't know it's a joke? They know -- the response is merely a way of convincing/embarrassing you into it not being a joke by attaching the joke with misogyny and racism and then shaming you and/or your innocent motives. If they didn't have a motive they wouldn't ask for a baited explanation, but you fell hook line sinker. Just let it go and stop responding.

@thecritic I'm not saying someone is going to punish anyone either, but predisposition is not fair, and as my example showed can be devastating. If you even hope that "the Asian guy will deliver", you will probably be disappointed, whereas you will cheer and throw a party whenever the American stereotype pothead merely shows up to work on Mondays.

@siljamicke Sure there is a difference just like there is a difference in our cultural beliefs. Their culture is said to be more adamant on their offspring being exceptional in terms of education, therefore that manifests in their overall population. I think we should settle this once and for all. Everybody has had their valid points on this and there are some things we disagree on, but that's perfectly okay. Please, I want my productivity back. @siljamicke I'm not on anyone's side, I don't believe it's right to be misogynist or racist but flaming a post that is already well understood to be a joke is not about to convince those who aren't/are racist/misogynist. If I find it to be offensive I'm not going to respond and water down true issues that should be addressed where they are blatantly seen to be issues by arguing with practical jokes.
